To develop a branding strategy, corporate identity and marketing material for Saracen Rye Ltd. A new developing business intending to operate in the emerging cross over environment of street art and contemporary art. The objectives of the business are to promote a range of established and emerging artists in this exciting new field. The company will operate in both primary and secondary art markets and will represent some of the most exciting artists emerging out of this worldwide scene.
My concept of this brief was to create a clean, functional brand identity, this was contrary to what the brief asked for but i thought this would work a lot better and convinced the client this too. I wanted the identity to communicate the type of art the company deals with and i feel a classic look would not have done this, and a clean modern identity was needed.

Research
Research & Context
For the research into this brief i wanted to look at existing independent art galleries and see how these branded themselves and also see the look of their websites to add some context to the brief. As i suspected i found that the most progressive and the galleries of contemporary art used a clean, functional branding style.

I also looked at some print branding to inform what i wanted to do, i found that the branding using structured use of typography especially sans-serif typeface communicated a lot more modern and culturally relevant feel. And i think that is what is needed to communicate to the target audience with this brief.

Development
Development
The development for this brief shows the process from the original logo in the bottom right to developing a new logo. A bold sans-serif will be the primary logomark typeface, and a serif will be the copy typeface. And as you can see from the top two right images the sans and serif combination works much better than the serif and sans combination. I will also use a secondary gold colour to give the branding a feel of exclusivity.

The development for the website is also documented here and you can see that the site will be a long one pages scrolling site that are now fairly popular but from my research i did not see any gallery using one. As the site is for a soft launch it will be feature a welcome/introduction film, an about page and features on selected artists.

Logomark & Assorted Stationery
Outcomes
The above images show the logomark applied to the range of stationery outcomes for this brief, these include a promotional catalogue, gallery opening poster, letterheads and business cards. I think the logomark functions well and is aesthetically pleasing, i also feel that it pulls the concept through the work too.

The combination of the different style of typeface also work well. The letterhead, invoices and compliment slip form one document where you would cross out the ones that whatever your sending isn’t the one that is left would be set in gold. I also think the black and gold colour palette work well together, black and gold can sometimes appear tacky but i feel here it certainly doesn’t do that.

Business Cards

For the business cards i wanted to keep all the information on one side of the card, and keep the back of the card a full black this was again to do something different and give the brand an heir of exclusivity.

The cards are finished with a duplex white and black stock, allowing for the back of the card to be fully black. The front of the card is designed so that the logomark gives the audience an immediate knowledge of who the card is from and the contact information is laid out around this.

Outcomes
The above images show the outcome for the promotional catalogue this is to be used to promote the gallery containing information about the artists that are represented by the gallery and also to advertise the listings and availability of pieces.

The catalogue would be sent out to well known collectors and art industry associates as part of the soft launch of the brand.

Outcomes
The above image shows the design for the website, it features four sections and the navigation. As this site is just going to be used in the start for a soft launch of the brand i wanted to keep it fairly simple and the client also wanted to not give too much away in the content of the site.

The first thing the user will see is the teaser film in the top bar and then they will use the navigation to smooth scroll through the site gaining information about the brand and some of its represented artists.
