RES News - President's Message

Dear Fellow Engineers, Despite cancelling the 2022 RES Gala, I remain optimistic that we will be able to resume our normal operations in the upcoming year. We are planning our Annual meeting for this spring that will include the distribution of professional awards and scholarships. We are also considering a second event this summer that will allow us to all come together to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the RES. We have also started to create unique classes that provide pdh credit to our members and colleagues. The most recent session on acoustics that was held in January was extremely successful. I anticipate that the upcoming sessions in February and March will be as informative, rewarding, and successful.

While these small successes have motivated us to continue to deliver new programming, the income loss resulting from repeated cancelations of our largest events (including the Gala) have forced us to make very difficult decisions. We can no longer financially support other extremely important community activities such as the TERA Science Fair and E-Cubed Fair without your help! While we will continue to endorse these activities, our financial support can only be derived from targeted donations from our readers.

Your support is needed now more than ever!

Please consider donating and joining the RES as a member to help us support these critically important community activities that function to keep STEM activities vibrant in our community.

A Sampling from the Archives of the Rochester Engineering Society.

1897 - 1975

by Lee M. Loomis Continuing with the historical sampling of the earlier writings on behalf of the Rochester Engineering Society, the years following "The Great War", into and through the “Great Depression”, continued to be a time of reaching out for the maturing Society, both locally and nationally. The meeting minutes describe a series of technical discussions and presentations intended to broaden the technical horizons of the membership (especially the CE's, ME's and EE's). The RES affiliated itself with a number of National technical societies, adopted local Affiliated Societies, frequently held joint meetings with them and continued taking action on a growing list of public matters. Certain issues of standardization, some crucial to public safety, became the responsibility of the RES and its affiliates. In the pervasive economic downturn of the “Great Depression”, the magazine offered classified advertising for unemployed engineers, technicians and draftsmen and took other steps to try to deal with the crisis. Still, it continued its effort to shape the function, focus and infrastructure of the City of Rochester, and beyond. World War, again affected the Society, taking away many of its leaders while providing opportunities for others to step forward to fill these vacancies. In an effort to provide even greater perspective on the happenings and concerns of the day, a synopsis, featuring selected items from "The Rochester Engineer" has become an integral part of this series. The Second World War and the Korean Conflict are now history, and the Vietnam War has recently become a focal point. These experiences have changed the face and, no doubt, the future of the community. The Rochester municipal leadership and the industrial community have become immersed in the cold-war, growth economy.

“The Rochester Engineer” (January 1975)

Certainly not a “first look” at the problem, this issue featured the reprint (Science magazine, 1972) of an article, “Careers in Science and Engineering for Black Americans”, by Adolph Y. Wilburn, Associate VP for Academic Affairs, University of Wisconsin. It provided an in-depth review of the 8 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER FEBRUARY 2022

circumstances and statistics of that time that had resulted in racial and ethnic minorities (16% of the US population), accounting for only 7% of higher education enrollment and just 5% of the annual output of baccalaureate degrees. The article decried the pervasive economic discrimination that was keeping minority students from becoming aware of, becoming prepared for, and gaining access to careers in engineering and science.

Aiming at the root of the problem, it recommended that a national effort be undertaken to ensure that ethnic minorities be helped to understand enough about the nature of the various aspects of scientific and technical employment to enable those with interest and ability to access these opportunities. It also suggested that current primary and secondary level institutions were not adequately meeting this need. Editor’s note: It would be many years later, but eventually the RES would undertake the support of local/regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs, and also initiate an RES Tutoring Team at a City of Rochester School District elementary school, Dr. Walter Cooper Academy (RCSD School #10). The RES luncheon speakers for January and February 1975 were announced: “The Rochester Section of the NYS Barge Canal”, by Alexander Kopczynski, NYSDOT Regional Director of Transportation, “The Nuclear Alternative”, by Richard E. Kelley, RG&E, Manager of Special Projects, “Matrix Management”, a special “satellite luncheon” at Kodak Park’ s Bldg. #28, by James Littwitz, of Eastman Kodak’s US and Canada Photographic Division.

February 26, 1975 (Board Meeting, Chamber of Commerce)

The Board approved two applications for Regular Membership (among them that of John R. Hoff, PE, recently named “RES 1974 Engineer of the Year”). The Board also approved the sale of two Reynolds Metals Company bonds, the proceeds from which would be used to support RES financial commitments for 1974-75.

Luncheon Chairman, Albert Curtis, announced that Rochester City Manager, Elisha Freedman, would be the March luncheon speaker and that Robert Flavin, President of the Communications Workers of America, (CWA) Local – 1170, would be the April luncheon speaker. Editor’s note: In 1975, there would be a six-month strike by Local 1170 of the CWA, against Rochester Telephone Corporation over the issue of wages. Lee Loomis, Chairman of the RES 1975 Engineers Joint Dinner, reported that with attendance above 400, the event was a success.

Loomis also reported that in his dinner address, Principal Speaker Richard O. Simpson (a USC - Berkeley Electrical Engineer), Chairman of the recently-formed US Consumer Product Safety Commission had shared that among the myriad of US consumer products being examined by the Commission, the most dangerous was determined to be the bicycle, and the least dangerous was found to be home lapidary equipment.

“The Rochester Engineer” (February 1975) In an article, “Of Superships and Oil”, RES Executive Director, Edwin F. Stevens, reviews Noel Mostert’s new book, “Superships”, inspired by the 1967 rupture of the Torrey Canyon that spilled 80,000 gallons of crude oil into the English Channel. The book decries the increasing worldwide hazards posed by large supertankers, as well as spills from off-shore drilling rigs, along the World’s coastlines. In his critique, Stevens elaborated on the recent (1967) formation of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) which, by 1974, controled 85% of the res news - history

World’s crude oil production, and its influence on World petroleum prices and markets. In another article, “TRIAGE…Who Shall be Fed? Who Shall Starve?”, by Wade Greene, 1975 NY Times (reprinted by permission), the author describes the method by which the US, the World’s largest producer of food, distributes its surpluses of its agricultural products. In summary, he expressed concern for the current lack of inspiration to apply morality, and technology, to finding solutions to the World’s lack of sufficient food supplies.

March 19, 1975 (Board Meeting, Chamber of Commerce) The Board approved three new

applications for Regular Membership and one for Associate Membership. Lee Loomis agreed to continue as Chairman of the Engineers’ Joint Dinner for 1976. The Nominating Committee presented a slate of RES Officers for 197576 including: John F. Schickler (Rochester Products) – President, M. John Corson (RG&E) – First Vice President, George G. Landberg (Mixing Equipment Company) – Second Vice President, Howard R. Jaquith (Taylor Instrument Companies), Arthur W. Schuster (A.W. Schuster Company) – Director, and James Sterlace (Stromberg Carlson Company) – Director.

Subsequent articles in this series will describe the RES' continuing outreach to other technical societies as it considered its role in this and the larger community, along with more of the activities of the RES as it moved to be of greater service to its membership, especially those suffering from current economic crises, and adopted a greater role in shaping the future of the City and its environs. Noted also, will be the contributions made by RES members in the struggle to meet the challenges coming out of World War II and the Korean Conflict, as well as a hoped-for period of post-war growth and prosperity. These articles will also feature an impressive array of RES activities in support of post-war re-emergence of Rochester area industry, and the ensuing prosperity of the second-half of the 20th Century.

RES News - Tutoring Team

Dr. Walter Cooper Academy; Enduring the Pandemic…

The School Year is well underway, but there are challenges...Covid-19 vaccinations became authorized by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) back in November. Since then, an increasing number of outlets have been urging parents to bring their children (ages 5 – 11) in for a free vaccination.

It has been nearly three months now since the Covid-19 vaccine has been offered to elementary school-age children. Test kits for the virus have been made available to families.

Parents throughout the Rochester City School District (RCSD) have been responding at an increasing rate, getting their students vaccinated and also tested for exposure to the disease.

Quite understandably, the rate of “positive” test results among students has been increasing, especially since the Christmas/New Year holiday.

The RCSD found it necessary to begin, delay, then re-start, in-person learning for January classes to resume. The educational progress of our students is greatly hampered by these stop/start measures, made necessary by the rampant infectiousness of the most recent variant of the disease. Our students are being deprived of essential support during these crucial “educational moments” in their lives. And clearly, the pandemic is not going to be ending anytime soon. For this reason, the policy remains in place that the RCSD will allow non-parent volunteers to enter the schools to tutor, in-person, the students of which many may not yet have been vaccinated. Similarly, the RES board does not believe it should be putting the health of our tutors (many of them with their own health issues) at risk.

We still believe there must be a way to return to our tutoring work…In light of these challenges, we have begun exploring the possibility of launching a “Virtual RES Tutoring Team”, later this school year. Drawing from the experience gained last Spring with a group of first graders, this “Team” would receive training in “virtual tutoring”, just as was offered to three of our RES Tutors last April. We are in the process of surveying our active tutors and, as necessary, their employers to see if they would be willing and able to provide on-line tutoring assistance to our Cooper Scholars, via Zoom, or other pathways.

We have also been working with the South West Community Council’s (SWCC) Education Committee, to explore options for recruiting, training and engaging volunteer (virtual) tutors for several of the elementary schools in the Nineteenth Ward. Dr. Walter Cooper Academy Principal, Dr. Eva Thomas, has agreed to help design, coordinate, and support necessary training of our RES Tutors (and others), to begin “virtual tutoring”, hopefully sometime later this Winter. Please bear with us as we move this along.

RES - Technical Corner

Technical Corner For the Electrical article this month we will provide an example of properly sizing surge arresters on the utility side of an electrical system.

Two specifications which would be required are the System Voltage/configuration to which the arrester will be connected to and the corresponding MCOV rating. Both are listed in the tables below. (Courtesy of Cooper Power Systems).

Question: The utility voltage and system are 13.2/7.62kV with a four wire Wye Multi-Grounded Neutral.

What voltage and MCOV rating is required for the surge arresters?

Answer: The chart above on the left lists the Nominal voltage that we are connecting to and the recommended Arrester rating. The chart on the right lists the corresponding MCOV Arrester rating that we came up with using the chart on the left.

The arrester rating is determined to be a 10kV/8.40MCOV. Interesting Points: 1. A higher rated arrester increases the ability of the arrester to survive on the power system but reduces the protective margin it provides for a specific insulation level. a. Steer clear of thinking the larger the voltage ratings of the arrester the better.

2. The lower the arrester ratings the better as it provides better protection of the equipment insulation.

3. MCOV-Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage a. MCOV must be equal to or greater than the phase to ground voltage for solidly grounded systems b. MCOV must be equal to or greater than the phase-to-phase voltage for ungrounded systems Hopefully this article finds you well and can be used as a reference for your project needs. by Michael Trapanovski, AIA & Sean Phelan, Associate AIA (HUNT Engineers & Architects) When Todd Clicquennoi of Metro Falls Real Estate Services recently decided to upgrade and renovate his loft apartment building at 208 Mill Street in Rochester’s High Falls District, he didn’t track down any market research data or worry about demand. He didn’t have to. He and his wife Michelle had lived in one of the units for six months in 2020. He knew what was needed.

“It really was pretty enlightening on a day-in-day-out basis to see what did and didn’t work in our unit, and with that in mind we’ve developed a whole new packet of amenities and finishes that we’ll use both at 208 Mill and in the new units at Brown’s Race,” reported Clicquennoi.

Sandwiched between two turn-of-the-century, downtown Rochester commercial buildings undergoing their own modernization, the mid-century modern 44 Exchange Street is well-positioned besides the future home of Constellation Brands, a dramatically reimagined pedestrian friendly Broad Street Aqueduct, and within an easy stroll or pedal from Rochester’s Roc the Riverway assets.

Consider data as “facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.” Humans have collected and exchanged data about our surroundings since time immemorial. It is a basic survival trait forged by all social species, but most of those species can only share what they personally remember.

Humans altered this paradigm radically with the invention of writing and, later, the printing press. But Information Technology (“IT”) was the game changer. With IT we can instantly share data with millions across great distances.

While we should be free to share our personal information with anyone we wish, others are now sharing our data without our knowledge or explicit consent. Some of this sharing is purposeful and some through sloppy business practices. Organizations have created new business models around the sharing of data. It is said that data is the “new oil”, and data has certainly become the product behind great fortunes. How did it happen and where will it end?

It begins with millions of businesses each recording transactions to manage their inventory and sales. Who bought what, when, where and for how much? Historically, your data was spread across many businesses in small, isolated pools.

Those businesses now share your data with aggregators like Amazon, Google, and Verizon. These aggregators not only have the details of your individual transactions, but they also know where you have been – both digitally and physically. (Google tracks your travels on the web and Verizon tracks your physical location.)

Aggregators stream many disparate pools of data into “data lakes”. A data lake is a centralized repository that stores data on a massive scale. Like real lakes, data lakes are often polluted. New IT tools like real-time analytics and machine learning allow for the data lake to be cleaned and filtered into “big data”. Big data is “extremely large data sets that may be analyzed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behavior and interactions.” get IT done

This trend will continue until we are surrounded by an ocean of data. Like the real ocean, it will be filled with both riches and dangers. In the wrong hands, your data can hurt you. Your data needs to be protected.

It is your data. Isn’t it? Regretfully, many sites will only provide service when users agree to a Terms of Use or Terms of Service statement. As you know, these can be many pages long and contain many esoteric legal statements. Given that most of us are not lawyers, we tend to click right through. These agreements usually state that any data you add to their website belongs to them. While this common practice has stacked operations in favor of the service owners, the government has begun to protect our data, both at a Federal and State level.

We tried depending on businesses to do the “right thing” with our data. Regretfully, as the right thing costs money, it was often not done. Given that our data is often exposed to misuse and cyber theft, governments crafted a raft of laws to protect your Personal Identifiable Information (“PII”). PII is any data that could be used to identify an individual to whom the information applies. This covers Social Security Numbers, names, addresses, telephone numbers and the like. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is a type of PII. While the government has attempted to level the playing field, we each need to stay active in the game.

Be cautious about the data you share and understand that businesses and others are always watching. Keep demanding your data rights.

Meet another young engineer Sade Brown

How many iterations do your projects go through? Whether they be design or implementation iterations, most projects have several iterations. Sade (pronounced shah-DAY) Brown, a student at Greece Athena High School, has already learned the value of iterative design and construction. Her eighth grade project was a robotic hand model, built with cardboard. Strings connected the fingers to the motors, and a small micro-controller board controlled the motors. This helped her understand the processes of gripping and releasing.

She changed the approach the next year, when she used Lego Mindstorms components to control a gripper, raise and lower the gripper, and rotate the gripper arm around an axis. She demonstrated how it could move objects – a small bag and a plastic spoon – from one spot to another programmatically.

Her program had to control the three motors, and then position the arm and gripper for the next task. Last year, she investigated a different design that could perform those tasks in a different way – allowing the gripper to reach out so that objects could be grasped when they were nearer or further from the arm’s central axis. She hoped to be able to use 3-D printing to build the arm, but the COVID-19 pandemic postponed that goal.

Science and Engineering Fairs. She likes participating in these fairs because it gives her a chance to show her talent.

The yearly fairs help her set attainable and stretch goals. At ten years old, she stumbled upon drag and drop coding tutorials on the website code.com (now code.org). Later on in seventh grade, Sade was hand picked to be a part of the RIT Science Technology Entry Program (STEP). The program provides students with the opportunity to explore into the STEM field, along with figuring out their passion or niche. Since then, she grew to have a strong interest for coding in STEM. Besides coding, her other interest include choir (8yrs), playing the viola (8 yrs), cooking, and dancing. Ashley Simmons, director of

STEP, said Sade takes pride in her work, never gives up, and has a neverending aspiration to learn. She is a role model for her peers in STEP. She uses visual drag-and-drop programming, and this allows her to implement the hand and arm control processes without getting bogged down in the details of particular programming languages. Her code wasn’t always perfect, and she learned about debugging by adjusting the motor activation parameters or adjusting the order in which the motors were activated. The pandemic has slowed her down; her school didn’t have in-person classes, and she had to learn a lot on her own. Prototyping materials in a lab at her school were available on request, but prototype construction is easier when one can see all the available materials. Sade hoped to be able to 3-D print components for her project, but this also was impossible because of the COVID-19 situation.

Sade likes that the science fairs give her an opportunity to show her talent, and they give her a framework for learning on her own, outside of school. She expects to enter the 2022 fair, and we encourage participation by Rochester-area engineers in that fair, which is going to be on-line on Saturday March 19, 2022. q

Artificial Intelligence Enables Smart Robots in Warehouses

by Maojia P. Li and Michael E. Kuhl, Industrial and System Engineering, RIT The warehousing industry is rapidly transforming from manual operations to automation due to the boom in e-commerce. To fulfill the ever-growing shipment volume, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are becoming increasingly used to replace operator-driven forklifts to extend warehouse operating hours, stabilize the workforce, and improve cost efficiency.

Intelligent Material Handling Systems (iMHS) is an ongoing research project at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Our goal is to innovate and investigate state-of-the-art technologies to create reliable and intelligent AMR systems for warehouses including technologies for mobile robot localization and navigation, task assignment, path planning, obstacle detection, and communication.

The AMR research being conducted by the iMHS includes the automated movement of palletized materials within a warehouse.

The research takes a three phase approach where methods are first investigated using a simulation platform. Next, technologies are tested on a set of small-scale AMRs. Finally, we apply the methods to full-scale AMRs in a warehouse environment (see Figure 1).

In the warehouse, the AMR localizes and navigates itself using self-contained sensors, such as LiDAR and cameras.

During the system setup, an AMR scans the environment using a simultaneous localization and mapping algorithm that pairs each location with a sensor reading. This process minimizes warehouse alternations for system setup and enables free-range movement for the robot. AMR system productivity when managing a fleet of AMRs in a busy warehouse. This problem is often referred to as the task assignment and path planning (TAPP) problem. Suppose there is a team of robots and a list of delivery tasks. Task assignment determines which robot should be responsible for delivering which task, and path planning determines how a robot should move to a destination. These two problems are interdependent and can significantly impact the productivity and efficiency of the system.

The major challenge for making good TAPP decisions is finding a path for each AMR that minimizes travel time while avoiding vehicle congestion or conflicts with each other. AMR congestion can increase the risk of accidents, delays deliveries, and cause blocking that requires human intervention. A conflict-free path plan to a destination can be found by traditional mathematical methods such as linear program, however, the long computational time makes it difficult to implement in a large-scale system.

Building on recent developments in artificial intelligence, we develop a new approach for addressing the TAPP problem that satisfies the trade-off between the solution quality and computational time. Deep q-network (DQN) is a convolution neural network designed to make sequential and interdependent decisions in complex and dynamic environments. Rather than finding the optimal solution with a traditional mathematical model, a DQN learns to make high-quality decisions through trial-and-error based training like a human.

To train a DQN on the TAPP problem, we build an environment simulator that can summarize warehouse status into an image including information such as AMR location and task assignment information. The image is passed to DQN and the model dispatches the AMR through a planned path in the virtual environment. When DQN successfully completes a task in the virtual environment, it receives some reward from the simulator. When DQN fails to complete a task or causes an AMR conflict, the simulator gives some penalty to DQN indicating such a decision is not favorable. The environment simulator generates a very large number of scenarios as training samples, and DQN learns to make high-quality decisions based on the experiences. Figure 2 shows DQN training progress with different fleet sizes measured by the percentage of time DQN successfully completes a task without causing conflict over 200,000 training episodes. The conflict-free delivery rate increases rapidly during the first 100,000 episodes indicating DQN is actively learning to avoid other AMRs and complete a task. After training, the DQN would be applied in the actual warehouse environment by passing the warehouse status information to the DQN, determining the task assignment and path plan, and then passing the constructed path is back to the dispatched AMR in the real warehouse to execute.

We conducted a simulationbased experimental performance evaluation that compares the DQN method to other commonly used dispatching rules in a warehouse environment. DQN was compared with the shortest pickup distance (SPD), zone-based shortest pickup distance (ZON), and uni-directional shortest pickup distance dispatching rules based on the number of completed material handling tasks within an 8 hour period for various fleet sizes.

The simulation-based experimental results shown in Figure 3 indicate that DQN can complete a larger number of tasks compared to several existing approaches in various mid-size warehouse systems. The performance of DQN in actual warehouse environments and large-scale problems awaits further study.

In this study, we show that some AI models have evolved to the level of making complex decisions in dynamic environment. In these environments, the number of possible conditions and actions are often enormous or infinite such that programmed logic is difficult to obtain. In this case, an AI model can be trained to approximate the decision outcomes under observed or unobserved conditions and predict the most favorable decision in real-time. q Maojia P. RIT’s Santosh Kurinec Named to U.S. American Semiconductor Academy Tasked with Solving the Computer Chip Shortage

National consortia assembles to address the development of nationwide education and workforce development programming Santosh Kurinec will represent Rochester Institute of Technology on the American Semiconductor Academy—an extensive, national consortia being established to meet the challenges of computer chip shortages.

She was part of a national workshop on The Future of Semiconductors and Beyond: Devices and Technologies, organized by the National Science Foundation, as a means to identify industry challenges and develop strategies to accelerate microelectronic manufacturing. The academy is a result of that workshop, and Kurinec, a professor of electrical and microelectronic engineering in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering, will be among academic, corporate, and government agency representatives from across the country tasked with improving manufacturing processes and increasing a skilled workforce.

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, the January 2021 CHIPS for America Act is expected to provide funding for economic and educational incentives to develop more than 280,000 new jobs.

One new job in the direct, semi-conductor industry is expected to support five to six positions in the computer chip supply chain.

Chemical Engineering Faculty Lead Workshop Using RIT's High-Performance Computing Resources at National Conference

The Computational Materials Nucleus in the Department of Chemical Engineering hosted a workshop on custom-built thin films at the AIChE Annual Student Conference held in Boston on Nov. 6, 2021.

The workshop was led by faculty members Obioma Uche, Patricia Taboada-Serrano, and Poornima Padmanabhan, who were supported by a fourth-year undergraduate student Lainey Orr, a co-op student Alex Leute, and staff from RIT’s Research Computing Department.

More than 100 students attended the workshop, and students logged in to the state-of-the-art high performance computing facilities at RIT—submitted simulations, collected data, plotted graphs for analysis, and also generated simulation trajectories as a movie. Students learned fundamental concepts about computer simulations, materials science, and how advanced datadriven tools could enable the design and production of next-generation materials.

Preparation for the hands-on workshop took place throughout the Fall semester, culminating in a test run in one of the courses, CHME-610 Advanced Thermodynamics, taught by Prof. Taboada-Serrano. Alex Leute helped build the environment for the simulations and Lainey Orr worked on the codes to analyze data and generate movies.

“The workshop at Boston was very well received, with workshop evaluation surveys showing an overwhelmingly positive experience. Fourteen participants requested information on Ph.D. opportunities at RIT,” said Padmanabhan.

Additionally, several positive comments from participants were conveyed to the faculty members via the surveys or follow up emails stating that the program was highly engaging and relevant to concepts taught in classes. “Students were able to do the hands on work and see how concepts were being applied in very technical areas today.”

Hannah Hargrove from University of Maine stated, “I really enjoyed the Molecular Dynamics workshop at AIChE 2021. I liked that the workshop started with the results of the experiment and then walked back through how the results were calculated.

That, along with allowing each audience member to run the calculations themselves, kept the audience engaged throughout.”

Clare Cocker from the University of Virginia stated the following: “Wonderfully designed”. Han Tran from the Virginia Commonwealth University provided the following feedback regarding the workshop: “A lot of the knowledge presented in this seminar applies concepts I learned in my interfacial phenomena class. I thought it was pretty amazing”.

The Computational Materials Nucleus faculty also offered a demonstration on the same topic at the 2020 AIChE Annual Student Conference, held virtually. Financial support for this workshop came from an Advance RIT Connect grant and the Department of Chemical Engineering. q

Volunteers Needed for Baja SAE Collegiate Race and Field Competition in Rochester June 2-5 RIT again hosts international off-road competition taking place at the university and Palmyra’s Hogback Hill Motocross site Rochester Institute of Technology will host the 2022 Baja SAE Collegiate Competition on June 2-5. Volunteers are needed for judging student design and on-track events taking place at the university and at Hogback Hill Motocross site in Palmyra, N.Y. With 100 teams and nearly 1,500 student competitors from universities around the world, the event showcases the best of student off-road vehicle designs put to the challenge on a rough and demanding course.

Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas: • Judging the virtual business presentations on April 14-15; • Supporting design, safety, and on-track course events in June.

A video about roles and responsibilities is included on the Baja SAE site detailing how to sign up and descriptions of volunteer roles and responsibilities.

Volunteers of all levels of experience can register online for one or more of the days.

Additionally, the finals of the business presentation will take place at RIT’s Ingle Auditorium. NEEDED: Volunteer judges with industry experience, particularly in the areas of new product development and project management.

Friday, June 3— Static events: technical inspections, design and cost presentation judging Teams undergo rigorous technical inspections of vehicles and automotive systems.

NEEDED: Volunteers with experience in automotive systems and the design and development of vehicles.

Saturday, June 4— Dynamic events: acceleration, sled pull, maneuverability, and suspension Teams continue technical and safety inspections of vehicles and systems at the field site: Hogback Hill Motocross.

NEEDED: Participants for support, marshalling, recovery, field safety, management, and logistics.

Sunday, June 5— 4-Hour endurance race and award presentation Teams complete the competition with a 4-hour race at the field site: Hogback Hill Motocross site.

NEEDED: Volunteers for marshalling/flagging, recovery, field safety, and logistics.

In June 2019, RIT last hosted one of the national Baja SAE competitions in Rochester. It was the seventh time the university hosted the international event where 100 collegiate teams from across the United States and from six countries competed in field events such as the hill climb, maneuverability and suspension, and the 4-hour endurance race on the last day of the competition.

Beardsley Project Receives Prestigious AIA CNY 2021 Design Award Beardsley Architects + Engineers announced that the Concession and Bathhouse Building at Southwick Beach State Park in Henderson, NY, has been selected by AIA Central New York to receive a 2021 AIA CNY Citation for Design in the Institutional category. The awards program celebrates the design excellence of Architects throughout Central New York and honors the client and design teams that work together to create and enhance the built environment. “We are happy that the work we’ve done in partnership with NY State Parks is being recognized. The new building at Southwick beach will hopefully serve the many park patrons well, and make their visits memorable,” says Project Architect Barry Halperin, AIA, NCARB. Southwick Beach State Park is one of the most heavily visited day use areas in the Thousand Island State Parks Region, attracting an average of 120,000 visitors annually to the sandy shores of Lake Ontario. During their stay, Park-goers can visit the sandy beach, hike along wooded trails, or camp at the nearby campgrounds. To serve this diverse set of visitors and to provide an accessible and modern experience, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) tasked Beardsley with designing a new, modern bathhouse and concession facility that reflects the traditional architecture of the Thousand Islands region. The selected site also provides a better view of the lake upon approach than the existing, dated 1960s-era concession building, which will be converted into an open-air pavilion in a future phase.

As visitors drive up the newly re-aligned entry roadway, they are greeted by the new bathhouse and concession buildings straight ahead. Beardsley chose to separate the primary functions of the facility into two separate buildings, connected by a pergola and gathering area, to create an unobstructed view of the beach and Lake Ontario beyond, rather than obstructing the view with a building. The new facility is sited on a raised terrace that formally organizes the facility on the site and mediates between the landscape of the beach and the landscape of the grass and wooded park that visitors travel through when approaching the site.

The bathhouse building features restroom and shower facilities, an office for park staff, and ample storage. The lifeguard and first aid stations are also located in the bathhouse and are oriented to face the lake for safety and ease of access. The concession building features an arcade, laundry area, commercial kitchen and concession area, and camp store. The central outdoor gathering area features both fixed and flexible seating as well as a propane fueled fire pit so that visitors can enjoy the facility in the evening or in the cooler months. Picnic areas and small pavilions create additional gathering spaces around the facility.

Now complete, the new facility provides patrons with improved access to the beach and Lake Ontario, creating a space where people from all walks of life can gather and socialize or find a moment to rest and enjoy the park’s natural setting. q news from professional firms

SWBR Celebrates LEED Certification of New Housing Project

DePaul’s Boxcar Apartments in Albion, NY, has received LEED for Homes Gold Certification

DePaul’s Boxcar Apartments, a new affordable and supportive housing development in Albion, NY, has received LEED for Homes Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system is the benchmark metric for sustainable design, providing third-party certification for buildings designed to save energy, resources and provide improved environments for residents.

Named for its location next to the railroad on Liberty Street, Boxcar Apartments consists of 40 units of integrated housing for income-eligible tenants. Twenty of the apartments offer on-site housing specialist support services that promote stability, health and independent living. The project was designed to support people with disabilities, including senior citizens and veterans.

SWBR’s sustainable design elements include low- and no-VOC paints, and water and energy conserving fixtures. Enhanced thermal insulation and air sealing techniques provide a high-performance building envelope that reduces energy loss. In addition to LEED, the project also adhered to the NYSERDA Low-Rise Program and the Energy Star for Homes Program. q

Breschard has 20 years of experience working for national and regional technical firms and public planning organizations. With certifications from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and the Association of State Floodplain Managers (CFM), she approaches projects with keen recognition of diversity, equity and inclusion. Breschard has an extensive background tackling sustainability, climate and flood resiliency, stream restoration, water quality, and hazard mitigation needs through planning support, capacity building, funding application/administration, public/ private/regulatory agency partnership coordination and design/construction of infrastructure projects.

She is graduate of Cornell University (M.A., Historic Preservation Planning) and Mary Washington College (B.A., Geography and Historic Preservation). Breschard is a member of the Land Use and Local Government Advisory Panel of the NYS Climate Action Council, Sector Advisor for the Water Resources Technical Workgroup for the NYS Climate Impacts Assessment, and Chapter Director of District 1 of the Association of State Floodplain Managers. She has written and presented extensively on the topic of climate action as well. q

Mr. Smith, a lifelong resident of the Rochester area, has nearly 35 years of experience in the engineering and environmental disciplines. He is certified by the New York State Department of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency as an Asbestos Project Designer, Building Inspector, Project Monitor and Air Sampling Technician. Mr. Smith is qualified to perform building assessments, bulk sampling, design, and air and project monitoring for asbestos abatement projects. He is also OSHA certified in 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Response and both 30-hour and 10-hour Construction Safety and Health. Additionally, he has an extensive health and safety background inclusive of being an OSHA outreach trainer for Confined Space and Non-entry Rescue.

By Aleksandra Markina-Khusid and Greg Quinn, MITRE This presentation describes MITRE’s Digital Engineering (DE) internal capability development initiative, an effort to build a set of reusable digital engineering assets that connects people, processes, tools, and data across an end-to-end digital enterprise.

This work makes use of models to digitally represent the system or System of Systems (SoS) of interest throughout the life cycle. The goal is to break silos of engineering and acquisition disciplines by enabling reliable, repeatable, standards-based digital exchange of authoritative information on systems and SoS design, missions, and relevant operational environments. The effort partners with multi-disciplinary projects focused on specific systems and SoS to document existing engineering workflows and identify portions of the workflow where data are repeatedly exchanged between specialists from different technical and acquisition domains.

Integrating tools across disciplines is not enough to establish a mature digital engineering capability. Processes, training, knowledge sharing, infrastructure and digital engineering support are all necessary to achieve the goals of digital engineering.

The aim of the effort is to evolve from a culture of engineering disciplines working on their own to one where collaboration is enabled by a digital engineering environment. In addition, as the projects and programs that MITRE supports become more DE-savvy, they work to stand up their own DE environments where subject matter experts from different disciplines connect and collaborate. In order to support these demands, MITRE is learning to stand up new digital engineering environments quickly in on-premise, cloud, and hybrid environments.

To accomplish the above goals, the DE initiative has been subdivided into four capability areas: (1) Tools and Integration, (2) Processes and Training, (3) Knowledge Sharing, and (4) Infrastructure. Tools & Integration area provides the tools that disciplinary experts use to accomplish their domain-specific tasks. Integrations between the tools across domains enable digital engineering. Processes specify how users perform tasks within their domain and how software tools are leveraged to accomplish the tasks. Training teaches users how to execute the processes and use the tools and the integrations within their domain. Knowledge sharing manages information on tools and integration, infrastructure, and processes, along with best practices and examples. It helps build community around domains and tools to further best practices and share digital engineering knowledge. Infrastructure provides computing and security foundation to support tools and integrations.

Meetings begin at 6:00 pm (eastern) and run to approximately 7:30 pm (eastern) All meetings are being held virtually until further notice.

UPDATE - NYS IN-PERSON PDH GUIDANCE

The Chapter continues to navigate these unprecedented times we are all experiencing. We continue with the short term, our goal to provide online PDH opportunities in addition to the content available with your national membership. Questions have been posed as to how PDH content is applied to the NYS Continuing Education requirements for continued NYS licensure.

As per NYS Board of Education: “Some regulations restrict licensees to a certain percentage of self-study for continuing education requirements. In response to the evolving situation with the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), and for those licensees whose registrations are due to renew March 1, 2020 – July 1, 2022, the Department will grant an adjustment to all licensees to complete up to 100% of the continuing education as self-study, provided that it is taken from a Department-approved provider and is in an acceptable subject area for the specific profession.

Additionally, the Department will grant an adjustment to all licensees, regardless of registration renewal date, to utilize self-study for any coursework taken during the period from March 1, 2020 – July 1, 2022, provided that it is taken from a Department-approved provider and is in an acceptable subject area for the specific profession. Coursework taken outside that timeframe must meet the continuing education requirements in each individual profession’s laws and regulations.

NYSED is working closely with other New York State agencies and the Governor’s Office to tackle issues relating to COVID-19. Please continue to monitor the Department’s website for updated guidance.”

Dear Colleagues, On April 26 the Rochester Section will host an IEEE Digitals Camera Milestone Ceremony and Joint Chapters Meeting (JCM) at the Kodak Center. The event will start with the public dedication and unveiling of an IEEE Milestone plaque commemorating the First Hand-Held Solid-State Still Camera created by Kodak Engineers (vTools# 299562). Please share this exciting information with past Kodak colleagues so we can recognize the many Kodak Engineers that had a hand in the early development of the digital camera. JCM technical presentations will begin after the dedication. The evening will conclude with dinner and a keynote presentation. Additional details will be posted to the vTools event page.

TRFSEF Rochester Finger Lakes Regional Science and Engineering Fair This virtual science and engineering fair is an ideal way for Middle and High School students to gain practical experience and skills in learning, problem solving, analysis, and communication. They will achieve this by designing and executing a project requiring practical application of scientific or engineering principles and methods. Students who complete and enter a project in TRFSEF, will then present their work to judges who will discuss and evaluate their work. Students with exceptional projects will be recognized through awards and opportunities to present their projects in national or international competitions. Participation in the fair is valuable in building essential real-world skills that will serve the students throughout their careers. The IEEE Rochester Section supports the Fair through our volunteer work in publicity, fund raising, judging, and administration. IEEE Digital Camera Milestone – Joint Chapters Meeting The dedication of the plaque for the IEEE Milestone, First Hand-Held Solid-State Still Camera, will be held in conjunction with the Joint Chapters Meeting (JCM), tentatively on April 26. The Joint Chapters Meeting will present several technical talks followed by a dinner. The event will be held at the Kodak Center on Ridge Road. LM/EMBS Presentation Evolution of Electronics and Informatics In Medical Imaging: A Journey from 1900 to Today Ram Dhurjaty, Ph.D. presented this talk on December 14, 2021. Ram discussed the history and technology of the medical X-Ray imaging revolutions and charted the evolution of electronics and informatics since Wilhelm Roentgen discovered X-Rays in 1895. His talk also discussed some of the hurdles that had to be conquered in order for these technologies to be accepted by the medical community. Topics included Filmbased and Digital X-Ray acquisition, remote processing, evolution of 2D and 3D image displays, as well as, evolution of interoperability, and digital image archives.

Due to the continued surge in the number of COVID cases in our area, we’ve decided for a second year in a row to cancel the Valentine Dinner Dance, which was set for Friday, February 11th. The Chapter officers looked at a recent survey that was sent out to the Rochester chapter and although there were a lot of people that expressed excitement and interest, there wouldn’t be enough attendance to make sense financially for everyone. We are making plans to have a different event for Wednesday, June 8th when ASHRAE Society Mick Schwedler makes a visit in Rochester. More details to follow!

Please consider joining us at our next Monday lunch meeting, February 14th, 11:45am at Blades on University Avenue. The topic Matt Kremers has lined up for us is “Updates on Refrigerants Codes and Standards”, and will be presented by Ivan Rydkin. In accordance with the Association for Bridge Construction and Design – Western New York Chapter Bylaws, ABCD-WNY is seeking nominations for Officers and the Board of Directors.

ABCD-WNY Bylaws dictate that the current Vice President will accede to the office of President and the current Secretary will accede to the office of Vice President for the 2022-2023 Term. The election of a new Secretary occurs yearly for a term of one (1) year, after which the Secretary will ascend to Vice President and then President.

Directors serve for a term of three years, unless they are completing the term of a departing Director, in which case, the new Director will serve the remaining years of the departing Director’s term.
