“THERE’S NO END TO IMAGINATION IN THE KITCHEN.” — Julia Child

In a galley-style kitchen redo, designer Patrick J. Hamilton teamed up with Bilotta Kitchens senior designer Thomas Vecchio to create a style they dubbed, “cleaned up traditional.” The client requested a palette of cool and warm greys, accented by marble with distinct veining. The designers extended the footprint of the kitchen, adding much needed storage space, and created cabinet fronts with glass panels to echo the traditional transom windows found throughout the apartment.

In Paradise Valley, Arizona, architect Drewett Works and designer Holly Wright collaborated with kitchen designer Reba Sams of Snaidero USA, to create a truly livable kitchen that opens to the outdoors. A wine cellar in Night Walnut matrix is integrated into the kitchen and dining room, and the brand’s WAY kitchen combines Champagne Mica lacquer with Night Walnut, adding an elegant ambiance. f there is a more harmonious collaboration than the union of an impossibly stylish jewelry designer and a glamorously creative tile house, we haven’t heard of it. Agate and Asscher is the gorgeous new collection from the beautiful minds of Artistic Tile and jewelry designer, Lauren Harper. Debuting both jewelry and tile, Harper found inspiration from stone agate to create earrings in natural, amorphous shapes, which spurred Artistic Tile to design a range composed of Symphony glass, with a watercolor sensibility in cool blues and icy purples. Harper describes the tile collection best: “It is like creating jewelry for your home.”

or nearly 30 years, Snaidero USA has created custom cabinetry for the luxury housing market, but none quite compare to their newest crown jewel, Chicago’s Residences at the St. Regis. Standing tall at 101 floors, the Residences at St. Regis clocks in as Chicago’s third-tallest city skyscraper with 393 units, but for Snaidero USA, it’s just another day at the office. “We have provided cabinetry for several projects of this scale over the past almost 30 years,” says Snaidero USA president, Dario Snaidero, recalling their largest project to date, the Signature at MGM, Las Vegas, with a whopping 1,728 units. The St. Regis is the 22nd luxury high-rise development that Snaidero USA has helped produce in Chicago, in partnership with their local atelier, Studio Snaidero Chicago. Designed by award-winning architect, Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang, the St. Regis’ bright, shimmering crystalline form was inspired by a sparkling gemstone reflecting light. For the more than 370 kitchens and 1,000 bath and powder rooms, among many other spaces, Snaidero USA fashioned cabinetry with custom finishes that extend Gang’s glistening gemstone inspiration into each of the residences, in collaboration with Hirsch Bedner Associates, the design team responsible for the interiors. “For the cabinetry finishes, we were asked to create custom designs that would fit with the project’s geminspired theme, featuring four distinct palettes drawing from the beauty of natural crystals,” says Snaidero. “It is a very modern design with effortless functional details and clean aesthetics,” while simultaneously shedding “any unnecessary decorative accents” in order to keep and highlight the “essential features and create continuity between the different elements.” And it’s precisely this minimalism that allows for “the materials to take center stage and define the personality of the space,” says Snaidero. “These characteristics make it a very versatile cabinetry line...So, it’s no surprise that it is the choice for many residential and multi-housing projects where the goal is to achieve a bespoke modern look.” ■

Each of the 370 kitchens in the St. Regis feature a sense of calming continuity, from the coffee-colored hue to the crisp lines of the countertop and cabinetry.

ALM SPRINGS MODERNISM WEEK IS KNOWN FOR CELEBRATING HOMES THAT COULD BE SETS FOR MAD MEN. MEN . However, this Mesa Modern project offered a timely twist: “more of a modernist approach, not necessarily the typical midcentury approach that Palm Springs embraces,” says designer Michelle Boudreau, whom producer Karen Okner brought on board to shape the look. “It is more of a Mediterranean modernist architectural project — a really clean architectural palette.” “It’s got a vast landscape that takes you on a journey,” says Boudreau, who brought that energy inside. “I wanted the interior to be curated with custom details, shapes and textures that were inspired by the mountains directly behind and the unique graphic shadows of the desert plants.” Also on board was Ferguson lighting specialist Stefanie Stroud, who says Mesa Modern showcases “all three categories of what we can provide: appliances, plumbing, and lighting.” She saw it as a chance to use “contemporary pieces that have a nod to midcentury design.” Stroud loves Boudreau’s process. “She gives me an in-depth vision board,” says Stroud. “Then we kind of jump in and say, ‘Okay, we think this would work best’ or ‘this would really pop here.’”

With a 24,000-square-foot lot and a 3,200-square-foot home, there was plenty to make pop. “This is a completely open plan,” Boudreau says of the main space. “In this great room, we had to incorporate a kitchen, a dining area, as well as a lounge area.” “The kitchen was pushed to one side, so we could use the wall for the cabinetry,” explains Boudreau. “A divider with a massive, lengthy island is all done in a strong, edgy black.” Here, she added more nods to the outdoors: “With the metals and finishes, especially with the Ferguson elements,” says Boudreau, “that was my bringing in sunshine.” Stroud raves about appliances, such as the kitchen’s high-tech oven. “We did the Noir, which are JennAir’s more contemporary products. On the oven, there’s a colorful screen. You can go in there and say, ‘I want to make a pot roast tonight,’ and you click it: it’s going to help you with how much time.” Other JennAir surprises? “The fridge had a jetblack interior,” she says. “You don’t see that very often.” On the opposite side of the dining space, a lounge is arrayed around a fireplace framed in bolder black. “The dimensional tile is a nod to the shape of the mountains and it catches a beautiful light from outside, looking different every single moment of the day,” says Boudreau. The artwork is by Chip Tom via Heather James Fine Art. Boudreau placed pieces by Tom in the bedroom and bathroom, as well. The team also worked to make sure outside areas balanced desert-friendly plants and people-pleasing perches. “We wanted to create spaces of discovery throughout the property,” says Boudreau. “We have a great lounge just outside. Then, off the poolside, there’s a little private dining and bar area. You can even journey to the front, and there’s a nice firepit there.” When its time to put out the firepit, one can retire to a bedroom that reflects the desert’s colors as night descends. “That is a custom wallpaper,” says Boudreau. “We worked together with Black Crow Studio to imagine this really beautiful, soft, delicate, darker color for this room.” Andreea Avram Rusu, of Avram Rusu Studio, also offered more custom lighting: a pair of pendants and a chandelier. “It couldn’t be dropped too low, but we could spread it across the ceiling with discs of glass that Andreea had blown to reflect the colors of the wallpaper.” Stroud points out more subtle illumination at work in the bathroom. “Where you need workhorse light to come in, you’ll actually see — it’s hard to notice — but these linear, recessed LED strips in the showers,” she says. This leaves the eye free to focus on fixtures and sconces from Ferguson flanking a beautiful black tub, and an eye-catching chair by Amorph. “And there’s plumbing that we did throughout the houses from Brizo in beautiful, luxe gold.” She declares the home’s profusion of black and gold is “definitely on trend.” Eventually, the team bid farewell to the desert sunset. “I could go on and on about Mesa Modern,” reflects Boudreaux. “I enjoy trying to do something different for every project,” she adds, “to tell the story in a different way.” “It was so nice to do the future of a midcentury modern home in Palm Springs,” Stroud shares. “Yes, the classics are stunning, and they always will be. But to take elements of that and create a new home,” she says, “I honestly thought that this is the type of home you might see in LA.” ■

DESIGNER EVE ROBINSON CREATES DRAMA FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR IN A NEWLY EXPANDED SPACE

hen the opportunity arose for an Upper East Side family of four to combine their apartment with a unit upstairs, drama certainly ensued. “We loved the idea of making the stairs a focal point: a sweeping, generous, dramatic space,” explains interior designer Eve Robinson, turning a regular engineering task into a show-stopping staircase designed to connect the family’s original apartment with the upstairs space. “By using these gentle, kind of sinuous forms to create a lot of drama and excitement,” she says, “it still feels very delicate.” At the project’s onset, Robinson asked the couple what colors they were drawn to, and a nearly exclusively blue-toned sensibility was decided upon. “Our goal was to create a very serene space, and their color palette definitely lent to that,” says Robinson. “This staircase is right off of the A&D Building 150E58

foyer when you walk in, so we loved the idea of creating a height and a gentle curve for the stairs — something we thought was dramatic, but not over the top.” The stairway’s curved wall is awash in stucco veneziano, chosen for its “luminescent quality,” to enliven the staircase with a glowy, hazy ease, while the tapered wooden spindles are grounded with polished nickel at the base. A serene blue-sky stair runner by Elizabeth Deacon features an outlining border in delicate silk in an even lighter shade of blue,

extending from the second floor to the first, heightening the sense of luxury even further. Dark herringbone floors create a bold contrast against “the lightness and airiness of the walls,” says Robinson. “I love the idea of coming down these stairs. It just makes you feel so special.” Extending the stairway’s themes into the versatile living room, Robinson used hues of grey and blue in calming tones and finishes, custom-designed Cove moldings and the addition of layers of lighting, to transform this formerly dark and sullen room. The new

design is bright and inviting, and “not just in the daytime, but in the evening too,” shares Robinson, also noting the placement of the family game table, flanked by an original Damien Hirst, for additional functionality. In the St. Charles kitchen, Robinson opted for creamy pearl hues in various textures to “mix the beautiful light wood, which is around the perimeter of the kitchen, with the island in a contrasting lacquer color,” unified by the Silestone countertops (through Cosentino), for a collection of different textures. ■

n one of San Francisco’s tallest mixed-use buildings, 181 Fremont, the intersection of art and design is on full display. From its array of engineering awards — the most of any U.S. building so far — to its remarkable fine art collection procured by art advisor Holly Baxter, to its out-of-this-world interiors with jaw-dropping views, 181 Fremont is an amalgamation of beauty in various forms. AubreyMaxwell, an interior design and art advisory firm co-founded by Robbie McMillan and Marcus Keller, was the perfect choice to design a model apartment that lives up to the building’s soaring ideals. AubreyMaxwell’s two-fold concept first involved outfitting the three-bedroom apartment in only one iconic brand or “design house” that would mirror the luxury and engineering standards of the building. The second part, notably pitched at the end of 2019, was to line the walls with artwork by women of color. When the pandemic hit and logistical problems ensued, the latter part of the concept changed to include all artists of color, regardless of gender — an idea that became especially poignant with the succeeding events of 2020.

“We’re always looking for pieces that have a reverence in the space and a meaningful dynamic all their own, but also leave room for the experience of art,” McMillan explains. To create a charismatic, elevated look, each piece of B&B Italia furniture and the complementary artworks were meticulously chosen for their aesthetic and functionality, and in the case of the art, for the underlying discourse they encourage and the issues they address. In the dining room, the sculptural Tobi-Ishi dining table’s bright white form pops against the black cerused-oak wall original to the space, enhanced by a mesmerizing artwork by Ghanaian artist Serge Attukwei Clottey. Jens dining chairs in a light oak frame and embossed leather add balance. “We’re always looking to maximize the amount of seating we can get in a living or lounge space without interrupting the flow,” says McMillan. In the living room, an Antonio Citterio-designed sectional in a wooland-linen fabric showcases gorgeous broad stitching along the seams and provides an incredibly comfortable spot to curl up and relax. Above it, Erica Deeman’s large-scale, black-and-white appearing color silhouette portraits of Black women invite contemplation.

A reflective artwork by filmmaker and artist Isaac Julien echoes the colors of the Bay water and adds warmth to the kitchen’s streamlined aesthetic, accented by Miele wall ovens. A triangular-patterned rug beneath the linear Surface coffee table appears to direct the viewer to engage with the art. A nearby hallway features compelling works by Moffat Takadiwa, Tavares Strachan, and Shaina McCoy — artists whose multifaceted creations infuse the space with a powerful, energizing presence and narrative. In the sleek, clean-lined kitchen, the duo added a pop of color with a reflective work by Isaac Julien, while an inviting seating area outfitted with a Pablo armchair and a plum-hued side table, offers an inviting perch to take in a view of the bay. The aerodynamic Terminal 1 Chaise Longue follows the lines of the Bay Bridge and offers another chic spot from which to enjoy the vistas. In the bedroom, warm, dusty desert hues breathe life into the room, grounded by luxurious blue bedding on B&B Italia’s sister brand, Maxalto’s Richard bed, as well as the dark tones of the Hypnos nightstands. A photograph by Chanell Stone sits beautifully amongst the riot of color. “From a design standpoint, we loved the problem-solving challenge of using only one design house’s furniture throughout to execute a full vision,” says McMillan. “B&B Italia, since its inception in 1966, has been known for its prowess in industrial engineering with their furniture manufacturing, so that was our hook and connection.” As for the art curation? McMillan adds, “It was one of my proudest moments in design.” ■ 76

So much of what we do involves architecture at the entry level, so the first step is to begin a conversation with the architect, if possible. We discuss in deep detail how the client will use the space. What is their daily routine? Do they wake up and go right for the coffee? Do they leisurely check their emails at the kitchen island while their family has breakfast and starts their day? We ask these questions and so much more. A PROUD CRYBABY

What inspires me is emotion. I am a very emotional person— I’m a father, and have always been extremely emotional when it comes to my kids. SURPRISE!

“Wowing” people is my inspiration.

My specialty is bespoke kitchens, baths and bars, so I would say that my overall style is “experiential.” I want the occupants of these spaces to feel something in addition to simply using them for their intended functions.
