Celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian on TV stardom, new restaurants and NYC’s changing dining scene

I

t may be hard to remember, but there was a time not long ago when fine dining options in New York City weren’t unlimited. Back then, there were just a handful of noteworthy, foreign-born chefs, cooking in a few truly good restaurants. Diners may or may not have known the chef’s name.

How quaint.

Today, of course, the cult of celebrity has descended upon the chef and New York City’s restaurant dining scene has seen an explosion of both talent and choice.

Consider the experience of chef, restaurateur and reality TV star Geoffrey Zakarian, one of the lions to emerge from the city’s restaurant boom.

“When I came to New York 38 years ago, you could easily identify all the best restaurants in the city. There were five and they were all French,” said Zakarian. “Now there are 27,000 restaurants here, and so many of them are good. It’s incredible what’s happened here.”

While that may be a dash of hyperbole, it is clear that after a succession of hit restaurants, a pinch of controversy and an ample dose of celebrity exposure, Zakarian has played an important role in that threedecades-in-the-making culinary upswing.

These days, the sharply-dressed chef is known for his executive-friendly Midtown hotel-restaurants the Lamb’s Club and the National, as well as his no-BS persona on cable cooking shows such as “Chopped,” “The Next Iron Chef,” “Top Chef,” “Hell’s Kitchen” and “The Kitchen.”

But when Zakarian began sharpening his knives in the late 1980s — long before the Food Network turned chefs into household names — he never expected to escape the obscurity of the kitchen, or leave the restaurant office for the spotlight. After all, with the exception of breakthrough public television cooks like Julia Child and Jacques Pépin, there was no mainstream platform for chefs in the media. Cable television would change that.

“I never saw this coming,” he said, adding that his celebrity status has allowed him to build a minor empire. “Going from being the chef of one restaurant can’t compare to having an impact on multiple restaurants.”

“It gave me a lot of opportunities to do stuff on TV that I didn’t have before,” he

said. “TV has been a blessing because it is great coverage for my restaurants.”

And he isn’t nostalgic for those long, hectic days spent sweating over a stove. “Now the biggest waste of my time is to cook in my own restaurants,” he said with a smile. “The best use of my time is to teach my chefs and imbue into them what I know. I spend a lot of time just tasting things with my executive chefs. It’s all about teaching that memory of taste, the taste I want people to experience in my restaurants. I love to teach.”

But even the teacher must be taught, and Zakarian’s education started early. As a child in Worcester, Mass., he was reared on his mother’s home-cooked Armenian meals like stuffed peppers, lamb, green bean stew, and barley and yogurt soup.

As a lifelong libertarian, he initially planned to study economics. (To this day, Zakarian’s dream dinner guests are conservative economist Milton Friedman and Frank Sinatra. “Milton Friedman was a free soul libertarian, who believed in doing what you want, not harming others and letting markets work. Frank Sinatra lived that,” he said.) But on a trip to France at age 22 — where he dined at 18 of the 21 threestar restaurants in the country — Zakarian

had an epiphany: He preferred basting and battering to bears and bulls.

Zakarian enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., and after graduation, zeroed in on a titan of Midtown’s upscale dining scene, Le Cirque — Sirio Maccioni’s famed French bistro. After optimistically submitting a job application to the restaurant, and being rejected, he proposed to work unpaid. With that magic offer, he was made an apprentice to Le Cirque’s master chef Alain Sailhac, next rising to pastry sous chef and eventually to chef de cuisine.

His success at Le Cirque led to executive chef positions at other Midtown institutions, such as 44 in the Royalton Hotel, Patroon on East 46th Street and the iconic 21 Club.

From his new perch overseeing Manhattan’s power-lunch crowd, he sought to remake the standard menu.

His deconstructed American food whet the appetites of experienced eaters and expense-account diners alike, just as socalled foodies were really going mainstream.

In the late ’90s, the New York Times wrote that “Zakarian seems to have his finger on the pulse of Manhattan, and he has produced a remarkably smart menu [at Patroon]. It is American without being hokey, rich without being fussy.”

Nearly two decades on, that balance is still at play in prototypical Zakarian dishes like Long Island duck breast with a leg confit crepe, served with a beet, fennel and black truffle sauce and Amish chicken with cipollini onion, salsify, braised celery, chestnut and green peppercorn.

Over the past 20 years, he’s opened four restaurants in Manhattan and Tudor House at Miami’s Dream South Beach. In 2013 he was appointed the culinary director of the

Plaza hotel, where he oversaw the painstaking overhaul of the historic Palm Court.

“It was excruciatingly difficult to restore.

It was a landmark landmine,” Zakarian said of the intense oversight by city’s preservation commission. “When you have a landmark building, no one wants to touch it, but when you touch it you get known for it.”

Now, under its elaborate, colored-glass ceiling, amongst its leafy palms, patrons can sip a $3,000 Sidecar cocktail made with 100-year-old cognac that manages to make the hotel tea room’s $75 Blood and Sand look like a bargain.

But certainly his signature effort is the Lamb’s Club at the Chatwal Hotel in Times Square — an exacting renovation of a Stanford White-designed men’s club, which counted silver-screen stars such as Charlie CONTINUED ON PG 18

Chaplin, John Wayne and Lionel Barrymore as members. The Lamb’s Club became a popular lunch spot for Times Square-based media industry big shots like Anna Wintour and Stefano Tonchi.

Here, Art Deco design meets a clubby 1950s ambiance; serving as an alternative Condé Nast cafeteria, ideal for a laidback yet highbrow lunch for the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, Jason Wu or Michael Kors.

But many, including the New York Times, have speculated that the Lamb’s Club has fallen on hard times since Condé Nast moved its offices downtown to One World Trade Center, something which Zakarian vehemently denies. “People just talk. It is completely untrue,” Zakarian said, adding that he has no intention of opening a restaurant near Condé Nast’s new offices.

“We always say that you’re only as good as your last meal,” Zakarian’s wife and partner, Margaret Anne Williams, said.

The couple married in 2005, after fittingly meeting in the chic downtown restaurant Indochine.

Looking back, Zakarian’s Howard Roarkish-individualism and cocksure attitude seems almost too perfectly groomed for reality television — but it wasn’t a path he actively pursued. “The transition to TV was a fluke. It just happened,” Zakarian said. “My star was rising in the food world and ‘Chopped’ asked me to be in the pilot, and it worked out.”

From “Chopped,” a reality cooking competition show, Zakarian embraced the medium, leaving the judges’ table to compete on “The Next Iron Chef” — which he won.

Bolstered by his fame — he says that young fans regularly stop him in the street for a picture or an autograph — Zakarian opened a “food studio” in the 50s on Manhattan’s East Side last year. The twofloor, multi-use office, test kitchen and event space allows him to manage his 600plus employees, operate his restaurants, cook and appear in film shoots, all from one location. It’s also the headquarters for a new,

yet-to-be-named American cafe in the works for Greenwich, Conn.

Superfans and well-heeled members of the public can even rent out the space for cooking classes and dinner parties hosted

by Zakarian himself — a testament to his growing stardom.

He sees the evolution of the chef from glorified cook to celebrity as something of a promotional miracle for both chefs and the city, but one that comes with challenges and indignities.

“On ‘Chopped’ I had to eat all kinds of shit,” Zakarian said. “I’ve had to eat whale sperm, raw lambs’ testicles and bugs. But it isn’t that the ingredients are so bad, it’s that these people don’t know how to cook.

Some of these guys are fancy chefs at major restaurants in major cities, and they just suck.”

Zakarian also fears that the city’s ballooning restaurant industry could deflate under the current administration.

“Our mayor [Bill de Blasio] is anti-business and it will kill the city. He’s forcing through

wage provisions, healthcare and paid sick days. We just can’t afford it. Restaurants are going to go out of business and people will be out of work,” Zakarian said.

Clearly, Zakarian revels in a brawl. To this interviewer, he read aloud some of his favorite Hollywood insults: Ava Gardner on Frank Sinatra’s marriage to Mia Farrow (“I always knew Frank would end up in bed with a boy.”) and Sir John Gielgud on Ingrid Bergman (who “speaks five languages and can’t act in any of them.”).

“You know what Walter Matthau said about Barbra Streisand? ‘I have more talent in my smallest fart than you have in your entire body.’ There are a lot of people I feel like that about,” he said.

But in the city’s cutthroat restaurant business, a bit of pugilism may simply help ensure survival. “You can’t make mistakes.

If you make mistakes you’ll die. New York City is punishingly expensive and there are unlimited alternatives for diners,” he said.

“I don’t eat humble pie.”

Go seamless: Appliances and cabinets embrace technology and lose their handles

A

quiet evolution is rippling through kitchen design today, smoothing surfaces and hiding the business parts.

Call it a kitchen makeunder — the opposite of a makeover.

That’s because many kitchens today are being designed with cabinets and large appliances that lack handles and appear to blend into the room, offering a seamless effect. But the goal is not a sterile space: Opulent or natural materials like semiprecious stones or wood are also being used to add detail and texture.

“People are seeking a combination of glam and streamlined,” said Marcia Butler, a Manhattan interior designer. “For example, a luxurious stone that shows every nook and cranny of Mother Earth, combined with cabinets where all you see are the doors.”

But one drawback to not having handles and knobs: Fingerprints can end up everywhere. It’s not for everyone, she cautions, but it’s a great look for those who can clean frequently.

Butler attributes a desire for clear surfaces as a “natural exposition of how we use our devices today.” In that sense, modern kitchens are like a smartphone or tablet, where apps stay hidden until needed. She recommends her clients stash their small appliances like coffee makers or grinders in deep drawers when not in use.

gentle touch opens drawers designed by Poggenpohl, making the bulky handles unnecessary. “Just apply one pound of pressure and an electric back arm pushes the drawer forward,” said Roger Zierman, interior designer and showroom manager for Poggenpohl Park Avenue.

And to shed light on what’s hidden away in drawers: Some kitchen designers are installing LED lighting that turns on automatically as

drawers slide open, illuminating storage.

The trend isn’t limited to cabinetry.

Poggenpohl also created a grip-free system for use with refrigerators: Slide a hand into a hidden vertical channel on the edge of the door to gently release it.

Similarly, an oven from Gaggenau is handle-free. It features a touch display that, with a simple click of a button, automatically opens the door.

Just a touch

C

onsumers’ expectations have changed in the past few years,” said Elliott Koehler, lead industrial designer for cooktops at GE Appliances. “They are used to touchscreens and smartphones, and want that kind of technology on other products they interact with.”

New cooktops from GE feature all-new touch controls, including a timer that can be programmed for each burner separately. Simply glide a finger along a semi-circular dial-like feature or touch anywhere along the dial to control the heat.

One of the latest Gaggenau’s refrigerator models features a mechanism that allows users to electronically adjust the height of the top shelf. “If you buy taller items at the grocery store, you don’t need to clear the shelf or wrestle to move it,” said Zierman. “Just hit a button and the shelf moves up or down.”

Fresh material

T

he use of opulent and natural materials continues to add warmth to kitchen designs.

“We are seeing an uptake in using more luxurious materials in the kitchen,” said Karen Williams, designer and principal at St. Charles of New York, a Manhattanbased design firm specializing in high-end kitchens.

Williams incorporates metals, such as brass and nickel, as well as semi-precious gemstones (like agate quartz, white onyx and champagne quartzite) in her designs; she praises the dramatic element they add to countertops and kitchen surfaces.

“This is what people are looking for: They want kitchens to be practical but also have to be beautiful,” Williams said.

Natural elements soften the appearance of manmade materials prevalent in the kitchen. “Untreated, brushed woods in very light tones contrast with modern materials, such as metal, glass, Corian and bronze,” said Simone Biscottin, a designer for GD Cucine, a high-end

Italian kitchen design company with a flagship showroom in Chelsea.

According to interior designers, some of the natural elements in demand today are Calacatta marble with thick brown and gold veins, lava stones, untreated dark walnut and oak with a strong grain pattern.

Butler, the interior designer, is currently working on a kitchen on the Upper West Side. The centerpiece will be a Caesarstone counter in Wild Rice, which is a light brown shade mixed with taupe tones. “What’s interesting about this counter is that we are doubling the thickness,” she said. Typically Caesarstone countertops are 1.25 inches thick. “We’re doing 2.5 inches for a chunky look.”

Other features in this new kitchen: A natural cork floor, white oak quarter-sawn cabinets with a lightbrown brushed glaze, a pendant school house light from O’Lampia Studio on the Bowery and a farmhouse sink.

The overall look, Butler said, is “warm traditional.”

Facing problems of the one percent

Real estate taxes, investment strategies and why wealth management matters

I

t’s uncomfortable, but it pays to talk about money.

Consider a potential scenario for a longtime New Yorker: You’ve just inherited your parents’ or grandparents’ Manhattan home — and that abode purchased several decades ago is anything but modest today. A $100,000 townhouse or co-op bought in “the bad old days” might easily be worth tens of millions in the current marketplace. A pretty sweet windfall, right?

However, if your family never discussed how to best manage that asset, you could be saddled with a hefty inheritance tax. In 2013, Congress made permanent a 40 percent tax on estates worth more than $5 million — recently adjusted to $5.4 million for inflation.

(Since that price today buys a nice two or three-bedroom condo, your family may not necessarily be thinking in terms of “estates.”)

Likewise, if a relative leaves you the family business, a lack of planning could turn a blessing into a burden. As in the previous scenario, nearly half of the value of that business could be headed to the IRS. “Once you’ve paid an estate tax, lots of market gains get wiped out,” said Edward Renn, who focuses on a blend of income and estate tax planning as a partner at Withers Bergman LLP, an international law firm specializing in tax, trust and estate planning. “In the wrong 10-year period, you can probably find a scenario where death results in a loss in basis [value], instead of an increase.”

Experts agree that the best way to avoid that is simply to communicate with your family, as well as with legal and tax experts.

“Really there is no way to put the genie back in the bottle, meaning that if a person is given an significant asset outright, they’re not the ones who can then turn around and set up their own trust,” said Gerard Joyce, Jr. managing director and head of the U.S. Personal Trust group within HSBC’s U.S. Private Bank.

“That had to be done by the ancestor.”

Wealth management is “a little bit like planning a wedding,” said Hannah Shaw Grove, an expert with 25 years’ experience working in wealth management and a founder of Private Wealth magazine. “There are so many nuances to managing wealth that you can’t think of until you are in the middle of it.”

With that in mind, Luxury Listings reached out to wealth management experts to help tackle rich-people problems and find billionaire solutions.

Go it alone?

The first hurdle an individual of affluence encounters when deciding how best to manage his or her bundle is whether it is more advantageous to hire legal, tax and financial experts piecemeal, or whether it makes more sense to tap into the infrastructure of an existing institution.

In most every circumstance, the answer is simply a matter of figuring out exactly how much money you’ve got stashed away, be it liquid or hard assets. According to Grove, it isn’t until an individual or family is worth roughly half a billion that it makes sense to hire private specialists.

“Most families don’t want to manage their wealth themselves unless they’ve got several hundred million dollars — usually north of $600 million,” Shaw said. “Otherwise it makes much more sense to tap into an existing organization like Morgan Stanley or Northern Trust that has all of the infrastructure and protocols in place, and all of those experts in house. That is really what wealth management is.”

And when it comes to institutions — hungry for ever-more-affluent clients — the number of services on offer is expanding. “Institutions are moving away from pure financial services and are incorporating things that are important to the wealth holder,” Grove said. For instance, many banks and wealth managers are adding more lifestyle services to their suite of offerings, such as concierge support for travel arrangements and luxury Inheriting a Manhattan townhouse can be a blessing — or a burden.

acquisitions. They are even helping people curate their collectibles.

And while engaging specialists who work solely on your behalf is certainly a luxury, institutions are becoming more flexible, offering a highly personalized approach to wealth management. “There’s no check list. It’s like a doctor’s visit,” Joyce said of HSBC’s wealth-management services. “We tailor a plan to our clients and get very specific about what they would like to do with their wealth.”

Infinite shades of gray

A lot of people use wealth management as a euphemism for investment management, i.e., if you have money, shouldn’t it be invested to become more money? But answering that question requires that you have first established clear goals: Are you investing to supplement an income, or for long-term growth? Are you investing in public equities and debt instruments, or are you interested in being in private markets as well? The extremely affluent will even craft an investment strategy that matches up with their political and social ideology, according to Grove.

“There are so many shades of gray in investments,” Grove said.

“Some people invest because they have $1 million and want more. They want to invest to increase the overall principal — it’s about investment gains,” she explains. “Sometimes it’s about staying ahead of inflation. Sometimes it’s about leveraging the tax code.”

“If you get all those things working together, you can save a lot of money in taxes, and have more principal to work with, which can have a compounding effect and increase your overall portfolio,” she said, adding that in recent years, there has been a trend toward increasing allocations to alternative investments, like hedge funds and private equity, on the high net worth end of the spectrum.

The tax man cometh

Experts are cagey about disclosing exactly how much they can save their clients through creative tax mitigation strategies.

Plus, they add, every client comes with a special set of circumstances. But all agree that tax planning — specifically, planning to avoid them — is as important as savvy investing.

“Mitigating taxes is a very serious activity for the ultra-high net worth,” Grove said. “A really good year on the stock market would be double digits, but taxes are significantly higher than that. So even if you have really good investment performance, you are continuing to see erosion from taxes.”

A frequent tax-mitigating mistake made by the middle-class millionaire (meaning, someone with “only” about $10 million) is owning his or her own life insurance policy, according to Renn. Instead, Renn recommends tapping into an irrevocable life insurance trust. “If you put several million into an irrevocable life insurance trust, that coverage is not part of anybody’s estate, meaning that you don’t lose half of it to federal estate taxes,” he said.

But when it comes to moving serious money from one generation to the next, dodging that estate tax requires serious long-term planning. In fact, parents can save their children hefty sums by transferring all their valuable assets to irrevocable trusts and by utilizing their lifetime transfer tax exemptions, said Renn. “The properly drafted trust will also provide creditor protection,” he said. “If a child/beneficiary were sued for malpractice, a slip and fall, a breach of contract or by a soon-to- be-exspouse in a divorce, the assets in the trust would be protected.”

Renn helped one successful entrepreneur move $90 million of a $150 million business to his children and grandchildren without paying any estate taxes through the use of trusts — a scenario he recalls in his 2008 book, “Protecting the Family Fortune.”

With such amazing sums at stake, it’s best to think like a Boy Scout and be prepared.

Or as Renn puts it: “A failure to plan is a default to higher taxes.”

Risky business

Whenever millions (or billions) of dollars are in play, the stakes can get high. That’s why it’s important to manage risk on the stock market, as well as insure hard assets and consider personal security.

“We talk a lot about diversification within a client’s trust portfolio. Most clients aren’t well diversified in their business — it’s usually one business, geography or industry.

So it can be comforting for them to know that their overall portfolio will counterbalance their own business activities,” Joyce Jr. said.

“That being said, there is no right or wrong answer. It is a personal decision that reflects an individual’s risk tolerance.”

Joyce added that more and more people are asking for their portfolios to be diversified on an international basis to spread the risk on a global scale. “In general, we are aiming for long-term diversified portfolios, not trying to hit the hot market,” he said.

But for the wealthy, there are risks beyond the stock market, and wealth management firms are addressing that by coordinating insurance into an individual’s overall strategy, according to Grove. “You want to make sure that in addition to just managing your liquid assets, you are also thinking about your hard assets and personal property,” she said. “Let’s say the family has a couple of high-value properties, collectables, jewelry and a significant wine collection. You need coordination between your wealth manager and all your insurance providers – life insurance, property insurance, auto insurance, health insurance, etc.”

And as the spectrum of wealth management becomes increasingly broad, personal security is also on offer. “One of the things that is a real issue for the affluent is being targeted for theft, cyber crime and extortion,” Grove said. “We’ve seen a big increase in private security services being incorporated into wealth management offerings. It’s one of those things you don’t think about until suddenly it presents itself as an issue.”

Good deeds — and goals

While certain Ayn Randian billionaires may still think greed is good, for most people, philanthropy is an essential aspect of stewarding their wealth. And once again, the key to philanthropic success is communicating a clear vision. “If you just write a check to a charity, you might not be giving in the most tax efficient fashion,” Grove said. “If you use planned giving vehicles, it could ultimately be a much bigger gift overall.”

And those vehicles are most often found within wealth management institutions, which have decades of experience giving away charitable dollars efficiently. “One of the first things you have to figure out is what are you interested in supporting and what impact you want to have,” Joyce Jr. said. “The current trend in philanthropy is impact investing. People want to make sure their money is making an impact, and they like things that are discreet and distinct.”

He added that his younger clients are especially interested in philanthropy, but not necessarily in writing checks to, say, the Red Cross. Increasingly, young affluent individuals are telling charities that they want to fund something specific.

“People want to know if, for instance, their gift is going to help cure a particular disease in a particular region,” Joyce Jr. said.

Actress/singer/writer Isabel Rose on her love of ’60s music and the pioneer life in Tribeca

M

ulti-faceted artist Isabel Rose has a thing for the past — the 1960s, in particular. The actress/ singer/writer has just put out her latest endeavor, a love letter of sorts to the decade. It’s an album featuring mostly classics — such as “Lots of Livin’ To Do” and “Love Will Keep Us Together” — called “Trouble in Paradise.”

The album is “inspired by a time when America was aglow by Kennedy’s Camelot by day, and lit by the lights of Rat Pack Vegas by night.”

“I’m really in love with music from the ’60s,” Rose said with a big grin, sitting on what she calls a “hot orange Womb chair” in her turquoise den; the blue/green walls (her two favorite colors) providing a perfect background for her red hair, light skin and blue eyes. “It was such a glamorous time and I’m very attracted to that.”

This love is of the ’60s is reflected in Rose’s expansive Tribeca home. The centerpiece of the living room (and also part of the foyer) is a wall of album covers, displayed as art, by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and other iconic singers of the mid-20th century.

But when it came time for her to find that perfect home, Rose, 46, had her eyes fixed to the future. Rose, her then-husband Jonathan Ezrow (they’ve since split up; she’s now happily married to Jeffrey Fagen, who runs Panda Diplomacy, a “surf-inspired action sports lifestyle company”) and their newborn daughter, Lily, moved to a condo in Tribeca 14 years ago. She remembers travelling to the Upper East Side to attend a baby play group. “In 2000, nobody was down here,” she said. “No young families.”

At the time, Tribeca was filled with factories and a few brave artists. And yet, she decided to buy a loft there. “I could see the future,” she said. “I understood that it was going to become a hotspot very quickly. So it seemed like a smart business decision.”

Clearly, Rose’s real estate instincts were guiding her, as Tribeca has since evolved into one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city. She’s a third-generation member of the Rose real estate family — whose company, Rose Associates, is one of the most successful real estate firms in New York.

Started in the 1920s by brothers Samuel and David Rose, today the family manages over 31,000 units in Manhattan. The family is also

known for their high-profile philanthropic work, endowing buildings like the famed Rose Center for Earth and Space at the Museum of Natural History, the museum at Carnegie Hall and the BAM Rose Cinemas, among many others. Her father, Elihu Rose, is a founding member and cochairman of the Park Avenue Armory; her mother, Susan, is on the boards of Juilliard, the New York Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall. Isabel herself is on the boards of the Lincoln Center Theater and the New Victory Theater.

Even with all that in her background, Rose was undaunted when she moved to the edge of Manhattan, into a 1915 building.

“It has an elegance, a history, that I find thrilling,” Rose said. The home has 5,027 square feet of space — the living room/ dining area alone is about 1,000 square feet — with eight rooms, five bedrooms, five baths and breathtaking citywide views.

The loft seemed — and seems still — perfect for her family. “Considering what I paid — I’m pretty sure it was $2 million — and the apartment above me sold for $13.5 last year, I think it was a wise move,” she said.

Though her family’s success lies in the realms of real estate, Rose has forged a different path. She’s made a name for herself as a multi-talented writer and entertainer. In addition to penning the successful Doubleday novel “The J.A.P. Chronicles,” co-writing and starring in Samuel Goldwyn’s film “Anything But Love” and performing in nightclubs like The Blue Note and Joe’s Pub, Rose has released two studio albums, the most recent of which is currently being distributed by Sony Records. “I’ve always been very musical and extremely theatrical,” she said. “I never saw myself going into the family business, only entertaining at their annual holiday party.”

Rose’s home reflects her passions. “Everything in here is really personal,” she said.

“When I first thought about decorating the apartment, I thought I’d get an advisor and fly down to Art Basel and get important art pieces. But then I thought, ‘That’s going to reflect the taste of someone else — not me.’

It’s very important to me to live in an environment that’s a true reflection of who I am and who my husband is.”

Plus, livability is key. “Once I had children [Lily, now 13, and Sam, 5], I realized that I don’t want to have one of those apartments where, if someone spills something, I’d have a nervous breakdown,” she said.

There’s modern art throughout the apartment; works by Sophie Calle, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg and more. A favorite piece is a photograph of a woman’s high-heeled, bejeweled shoe by Marilyn Minter. “I feel that the shoe represents everything I know and understand about femininity,” Rose said. “It’s that juxtaposition of glamour and dirt that women live in all the time. Trying to be beautiful and glamorous while making sure breakfast arrives on the table, making sure the laundry is done, making sure things are running. We’re the worker bees in every household.”

The huge sofa in the living room also has special significance. “It’s almost like a bed my whole family can cuddle on,” she said.

“My kids take a flying leap onto this couch.

This is a house that’s alive.”

As for the apartment’s overall design — which she says is contemporary and comfortable — Rose thinks it benefitted from several corrections she made. “I have a small storage closet filled with literally dozens of sample pints of paint,” she said.

“Painting anything in your home requires a big leap of faith. Color changes the way you feel, and the more subtle differentiation in shade can have deep ramifications to your comfort level (or lack thereof). I have literally repainted entire rooms three times (to my husband’s complete horror) in order to get a shade that works.”

“The only way to discover your sense of style is to make big, bold decisions and lots of mistakes,” she adds. “It’s really a metaphor for life. Before you really know what your heart is made of, you have to break up with someone. I had to be brave enough to make big design mistakes. I don’t take what it means to create a home lightly.”

Rose has fond memories of a childhood filled with art and music. The family’s apartment was across the street from the Guggenheim Museum and a few blocks from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “We went to the ballet, we went to the Philharmonic, we went to Broadway shows,” she said. “But I didn’t learn to throw a football until I was 19.”

Still, she said, all that cultural background was very fortunate training for the life she wanted to lead. Though she majored in American Studies at Yale, she was always focused on becoming an artist. “I was the kid who had the lead in musicals at summer camp and college,” she said. “I had the bedroom with walls covered with

amazing collages and costumes that I made from scratch.”

She went directly from Yale to the Williamstown Theatre Festival to the first national tour of “Six Degrees of Separation.” While on tour, she began to write — eventually obtaining an MFA in fiction from Bennington and a book deal for “The J.A.P. Chronicles” (which she later turned into a musical). “I’ve been very fortunate at finding success doing the things I love,” she said.

One of those loves is classic pop music, something that was inspired by her father.

“He had gone on a European tour when he was a teenager and came back with an armful of Edith Piaf and Greta Keller records,” Rose said. “So my father was the one who taught me about this kind of music.”

His lessons stayed with her. “Trouble in Paradise” — which is also the album’s title

track — is a kind of tip of her hat to him. The New York Times called it “an impressive job.”

“I heard the title of that song, ‘Trouble in Paradise,’ and right away I thought about pulp fiction titles,” she said, laughing. “I love the inherent drama of the title … And it really suits the music in the album — big, dramatic and lush.”

Rose said she’s planning one more movie, one more book and one more album. Though she might be busy, she’s hesitant to consider it “work.” “I think when you’re working hard in the creative arts, it doesn’t feel like work,” she said. “It’s such an expression of my core being that I can’t seem to stop. I’m also waiting to make it big. So I have to keep going.”

“Sometimes I think: ‘What if they gave me an Emmy, a Tony and an Oscar — would I keep going?’ ” she adds. “And, you know what, I probably would.”

With a rustic vibe, farm-to-table eateries and an influx of affluent hipsters, is the North Fork the new Brooklyn?

T

he ocean foam may be frozen on the beaches but the hunt for second homes on Long Island’s East End is hardly chilled. On the North Fork — the 30mile long peninsula in Suffolk County — small vineyards, farm-to-table restaurants, microbreweries and the sea air attracts buyers year-round, hungry for a less-frenzied summer experience than what is found in the nearby Hamptons. Ironically enough, that lower-key lifestyle is big business for real estate.

Last year, the number of home sales in the North Fork surpassed 2005 levels — the height of the real estate bubble — according to a decade-long survey by the brokerage Douglas Elliman. And real estate professionals working in the area agree that many of these buyers have a common origin: Brooklyn.

“The same things that attracted people to Brooklyn are present in the North Fork,” said Kristopher Pilles, managing partner of East End Luxury, a residential brokerage based in Riverhead. “Brooklyn has become much more desirable, so naturally our more affluent buyers are coming from that area, as well as everywhere else.”

Some have called this phenomenon the “Brooklynification” of the North Fork.

Just as bourgeois-bohemian Manhattanites colonized Brooklyn’s spacious brownstones and diverse community-oriented neighborhoods, educated urban professionals are shunning the glitzy Hamptons for the North Fork’s small-town atmosphere.

The trend was even parodied in HBO’s “Girls” — the controversial pop-culture case study of millennial life in Brooklyn. Last season’s infamous “Beach House” episode helped cement the North Fork’s connection to privileged creative-class Brooklynites in the minds of many.

“I can’t believe we’re in the Hamptons,” says Shoshanna, played by Zosia Mamet, as she steps off a bus in the episode’s opening.

“Oh no, this is the North Fork. It’s very different than the Hamptons,” Marnie, played by Allison Williams, fires back. “It’s, you know, for people who think the Hamptons are tacky, and don’t want to be on a beach that’s near a J.Crew.”

At least in this case, life imitates art.

Sheri Clarry, a North Fork-based broker with Corcoran, says her Brooklyn clients regularly bring up the episode while house hunting. And while she doesn’t think Brooklyn residents are actually buying second homes because of a TV show, the episode has certainly drummed up interest. “There are tons of Brooklynites on the North Fork.

I call it Brooklyn-on-the-sea,” Clarry said.

“The North Fork used to be an alternative, and now it’s become a primary destination.”

And, as in Brooklyn, the question has become, a destination for whom? In the North Fork, the gentrification process is already nearing its end game, with working class families in some areas displaced by moneyed nonconformists on vacation, who are in turn being replaced by lawyers and financiers. “I’ve got everyone from finance hipsters to actors, directors, supermodels, musicians, celebrities and artists,” Clarry said, adding that, no, “finance hipster” is not an oxymoron.

“There are hipsters in finance who work in really cool, boutique hedge funds,” she said. “Finance isn’t always what it was in the ’80s and ’90s anymore. It’s changed.”

tons levels,” Pilles adds, noting that from an investment standpoint the area offers better value than the more established South Fork.

(According to the Douglas Elliman report, the average home price in the North Fork last year was $690,000, compared with $1.7 million in the Hamptons.) “Right now the consensus is that the upside exists on the North Fork, and that the Hamptons is always going to be Hamptons.”

True, the Hamptons will always remain a summer mecca for Manhattan blue bloods, but the North Fork might not always retain its rustic, countryside character. And the importance of food to the ongoing transformation of the area is yet another parallel with Brooklyn that is impossible to understate.

Sandwiched between the Long Island Sound and Peconic River, the peninsula is best known for its abundance of vineyards.

The combination of wine and water was a natural draw for chefs and restaurateurs, like Gramercy Tavern co-founder and celebrity chef Tom Colicchio, as well as Barbara Shinn and David Page, owners of the Shinn Estate Vineyards and Farmhouse in Mattituck and former owners of Home Restaurant in Greenwich Village.

The influence of top chefs on the area has led to an increase in the number of high-end, understated restaurants over the last decade. “The North Fork really started becoming a destination in the mid-2000s when the food scene began,” Clarry said.

In Greenport, for instance, the Frisky Oyster serves cocktails at New York City prices in a sleek white room, across the street from a typical small-town dive bar. And back on Main Street, Brix & Rye, a cocktail and gourmet pizza spot operated by Rolling in Dough pizza truck owner Matt Michel, features live music from local indie bands.

“I grew up here, but spent years living in Red Hook. Everyone was leaving for Brooklyn back then,” a bartender at Brix & Rye said. “Now people are moving back because they appreciate what is happening here. It’s become really cool and artisanal.”

But increasingly, locally owned staples such as Claudio’s Restaurant in Greenport (featured in the “Girls” episode) and Tweeds Restaurant & Buffalo Bar in Riverhead (where an impressive selection of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon is on offer, ranging from $35 to $60 a pour) are competing with

newer fine-dining establishments, such as the critically acclaimed North Fork Table & Inn in Southold.

At North Fork Table it’s possible to observe young bearded men and tattooed women — sporting the designer streetwear commonly seen at the Bedford Avenue L-train stop — enjoy a $75 lunch tasting menu with locally grown produce, seafood from the Peconic Bay and carefully paired wines, as evident on a recent weekend. Nearby, a wildhaired child noshes on $22 truffled mac n’ cheese. The North Fork Food Truck sits just outside, serving local and seasonal Berkshire pulled pork rolls, lobster rolls and hot dogs for those looking for a pseudo-blue collar lunch.

And while all that might sound like a scene out of Williamsburg, Pilles rejects the idea that the North Fork is growing to resemble

Brooklyn. “The thought that the North Fork is somehow becoming ‘Brooklynified’ is false,” Pilles, a lifelong North Fork resident, argues. “This statement implies the opposite of what has really taken place. The reality is that the North Fork was Brooklyn before Brooklyn was Brooklyn.”

According to Pilles, farm-to-table restaurants, artisanal small businesses, craft spirits and even beards have always been part of life in the East End. In other words, maybe it’s Brooklyn that’s the new North Fork. “The farm-to-table concept is nothing new to the North Fork,” Pilles said. “Families, restaurants and the supermarket have long supported local farmers. Seafood was caught earlier in the day, usually by a family member who was a bay man for a living, or the parent of one of my classmates.”

However, that doesn’t mean that the area

isn’t mutating into the preferred getaway for the self-consciously rich and famous.

“The North Fork has always been the less shiny more salt-of-the-earth relative to the Hamptons. There were no trendy boutiques in our villages … and no real demand for our real estate. Home ownership was possible and the Hamptons were far away,” he said. “Fast forward and potato farms become vineyards, second-home buyers like the price point, accessibility and charm of the North Fork and real estate explodes … restaurants start catering to higher-end consumers.”

Just as the divide between Manhattan and Brooklyn has blurred, “the Hamptons and the North Fork may soon become interchangeable,” he said.

he United States Postal Service is hoping to cash in on the highend condo craze by selling the development rights for the Old Chelsea Station branch. The move would allow a builder to construct up to eight stories of condominiums on top of the existing two-story property. The post office would stay open, but as much as 6,000 square feet of the existing space would be allocated for a new lobby and possibly a gym. “They’re the ones that are going to decide, ultimately, what is going to be built there,” Gregory Lackey, a U.S. Post Office real estate asset manager, told DNAInfo.

uropean investors are cashing out in the Financial District as the Euro weakens and apartment prices in the area hit an all-time high. Many European investors bought their units after Lehman Brothers crashed in 2008, the New York Daily News reported. Since then, the average price of an apartment in the area has increased to more than $1 million in the fourth quarter of 2014, and the average price per square foot in the area rose 11 percent since 2013 to $1,192. “I have about 20 exclusives on the market right now that are all owned by Europeans,” luxury broker Richard Nassimi told the Daily News. “They would be out of their minds not to sell.”

Turnberry Ocean Club, Trump Tower Toronto, EverBank, Skyline Properties and real estate broker Gilad Azaria sponsored the event celebrating Guilfoyle’s cover. The glitterati of the media world, including legendary New York Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams, Vanity Fair contributing editor George Wayne, Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt, Gigi Stone Woods, Andrea Tantaros and HarperCollins senior vice president Lisa Sharkey were in attendance, as was former LLNYC cover star and artist Domingo Zapata.
