Knowing the Locals

The lacebark tree, Brachychiton Discolor, is the subject of Noel Jupp's 'Getting To Know The Locals' column in this issue and it is one of the endemic tree species that will be planted in the new arboretum in the grounds of the Therese Doyle Hall (see 'Community Matters' on page 6). The arboretum will include walking paths and quiet places to sit and reflect on the local rainforest trees and shrubs that are

disappearing from the landscape. It is hoped that these species will become more widely used in local gardens to provide habitat for our native birds and animals. The name Brachychiton is made up of two parts. Brachy means 'short' and chiton is a coat of mail or tunic, and together they refer to the coating of short massed hairs over the seeds. Discolor refers to the leaves which are a different colour above and below.
