Inside this month, Ivan Skaines from the Gresford District Historical Society has a story from 1924 about the Paterson River oranges "It is said that some of the immigrants who eventually settled on the Paterson brought out seeds from Madeira, obtained from Madeira oranges..." – story page 17 Fiona Wright has also noticed the "glowing globes of goodness" and has found a new recipe for marmalade she would like to share "it is so easy and gives an excellent set". – read more page 9

Local Government Elections Postponed The NSW Government has postponed the September Local Government elections to Saturday 4 December 2021.

Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock said the decision, after extensive consultation with and advice from the NSW Electoral Commission and NSW Health, has been made in response to the COVID-19 situation.

“We have taken this step to postpone the election to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities, voters, polling staff and candidates.”

Letter To The Editor About the GRESFORD and DISTRICT COMMUNITY GROUP INC As the oldest and only member of the original committee of the GDCG and having served as Secretary and President, I thought I would like to write an article for the Gresford News, noting that the News started in 2002, and with the loyal devotion of our editors is still keeping our community well informed and entertained today.

The Gresford and District Community Group started in 1992 and is a progressive group of locals who volunteer to help improve community life, in and around Gresford. Everyone is welcome to join the monthly meeting and welcome new members, membership only costs $5 pa. Many new residents have joined and formed friendships through working on projects together.

Recently, the GDCG has been establishing an arboretum behind the building which houses the Historical Society’s memorabilia. The plants have

been chosen by our horticulturalists, Noel Jupp and Penny Kater, and are indigenous rainforest trees and shrubs to our area. Some have name plaques and many more will be named soon so you can choose plants that grow well in our area when establishing a garden here. Can you believe that the children, parents and grandparents planted them only a few years ago and they have survived three summers of drought and have thrived. Enthusiastic members of the GDCG have formed ‘Friends of the Arboretum’ who work there most Fridays, in winter from 10 am, and enjoy a social time when tools go down. Everyone is welcome. Arboretum – plant of the month White Aspen 4-8m in width in rainforest, probably only half the size in suburban backyard.

Flowers: Pretty small white flowers from summer to early autumn.

Fruit: Long green stems and grow in heavy bunches. Flowers turn to pale green berries in winter, turning white then yellow as they mature, grow to approximately 1cm in diameter. The fruit has a small, black seed encased within a husk, in a star-like pattern, similar to an apple.

Foliage: Dense, dark green foliage Pruning: Can be grown as a screen, a hedge or balcony plant in a large pot Soil: They grow best in wet and humid to sub-humid environments. Prefers rich soil that retains moisture while been able to drain freely.

Propagation: The small black seeds are slow to germinate having been removed from the decomposed fruit.

Position: Prefers full sun, with protection from strong winds

Family: Rutaceae Scientific Name: Achronychia oblongifolia Height: Varies between 12-15m, and

The White Aspen is a rainforest tree which produces edible bush tucker fruit.

Indigenous Australian used the White Aspen for thousands of years for both medicinal and culinary purposes. Native birds, especially the pied currawong,

blue-faced honeyeater, green catbird, wompoo fruit dove, satin bowerbird and white-headed pigeon love the fruit from the White Aspen.

White Aspen fruits are used either raw or cooked. The raw fruit has a strong crisp texture with a strong acidic flavor with a tart, lemon taste and hints of spice, honey and eucalyptus. Ripened fruit have a crisp texture and can be added to salads, made into syrups, marinades, cakes, aioli and when cooked the fruit of the White Aspen makes a nice compliment to seafood or chicken.

White Aspen fruits are highly perishable and need to be refrigerated within 12 to 24 hours. They will store for up to three weeks in the refrigerator and up to two years in the freezer.

Dr David Gillespie MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR LYNE FUNDING FOR PROJECTS TO SUPPORT BUSHFIRE RECOVERY Our bushfire impacted communities will receive a critical boost to their recovery from a number of projects to be delivered through Stage Two of the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, co-funded by the Australian and NSW Goverments.

Projects across the Hunter region include: •

$264,432 for The Camping to Common Trail Connections project, which aims to upgrade an access link between the camping area located at Dungog Showgroun, and the Dungog Common Reserve. This connection will allow mountain bikes, horse riders, and walkers to access the Common from their local residence or place of accommodation. $861,476 for Accelerating Event Economies which aims to attract large events to the Hunter, accelerating job creation and economic recovery following the bushfires.

The project will establish a task group; fund an events and opportunity audit; and develop resources including an event manager’s toolkit, a prospectus, and a website. $900,000 Hunter Valley Wine & Tourism Recovery & Resilience Program. The tourism campaign will aim to improve destination perception, increase consumer demand, raise sales value, and boost domestic tourism.

It’s fantastic to see these vital community projects receive this funding as people continue to rebuild their lives following the black summer bushfires that destroyed 125 homes in our region and damaged many more.

Food chat with Fiona...

I hope you are safe and warm at home, these winds are intense.

Still citrus season and glowing globes of goodness abound.

Oranges have been my bounty the last few weeks as the cold brings their sweetness out. Bit of inspiration in there – rough conditions bringing out the sweetness – hope it works on all of us that way.

I found a new recipe for marmalade – it is so easy and gives an excellent set. Weigh your fruit. Simmer the uncut fruit in water until the rind is soft, cool, keeping the liquid. Slice, discarding the seeds and add to a clean pot with the same weight of sugar and 100ml of lemon juice per kilo.

Bring to boil and simmer until the bubbles become big and lazy… or do the check on a plate looking for wrinkles. So easy to do this way – removing all the cutting that can be off putting when making marmalade.

That left over citrus water is excellent to cook your rice, quinoa or add to stock – a real flavour boost.

I noticed so many abandoned citrus trees around and felt so sad for them – they are so generous and not being used. I wonder if next year we could team up, find community groups to harvest and use all the abundance, there would still be plenty for the cockies and we could feed those in need, and lay stores down from the harvest. An idea?

I caught a bus into Seville once during the orange blossom season, the whole city was perfumed, it was amazing… Maybe next year we should plan picnics to orchards to smell the orange blossoms?

Our area was once famous for the quality of our oranges, does anyone still have Paterson River Oranges. The flavour is outstanding and it is easy to spit out the seeds.

Getting ready for Sculpture On The Farm 2021 Sculpture on the Farm 2021 will showcase 150 sculptures, including 75 garden and paddock works and 75 intimate works suitable for indoors. All these works will be visible on the SOF online catalogue as early as September and the sales portal will be launched in time for the Sculpture on the Farm Preview on 1 October. Keep an eye out on social media as the sculptors reveal the secrets behind the creation of their works.

This year SOF is expanding to venues in Dungog. Gallery on Dowling will be holding workshops. Sculptor Talks in Town will be hosted by the Tin Shed Brewery, Meg’s Kitchen, CWA Dungog and Stella Bistro. The Dungog Arts Society Annual Exhibition will be on at the RSL Dungog, 1-10 October. Tickets for the Opening Night at 6.30pm on 1 October will be available at the door.

Earth Art Experience at the Dungog Common by Gavin Vitullo A six-day immersion in the Dungog Common by Newcastle Earth Artist, Gavin Vitullo, has resulted in an

imposing Ephemeral Sculpture, located in Common Creek, Dungog. Sculpture on the Farm was the recipient of a $3,000 Create NSW Grant which was used in its entirety to engage Gavin to undertake this ephemeral project in early April. This Earth Art Experience at the Dungog Common was supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW. From Gavin’s Vitullo’s journal: "... The objective is as clear as the crisp mountain air of the sprawling Dungog landscape. I am to walk mindfully through the environment, honing my senses toward creating a sympathetic intervention of natural materials. An abundance of fallen wood, running water, static stone and calling birds set the tempo for a responsive Earth Sculpture…

With the support of Create NSW and the Dungog Common this venture has been realised. After a hike and conversation with guide and local biking enthusiast Allen Shrimpton, Vitullo fixed his gaze upon a naturally occurring stone void in the bed of a stream nearby as the catalyst for his creation. One void, one log, one old wooden mallet and one very weathered chisel formed the premise for a poetic response to the surrounding

What is the meaning of life?, Does God exist? Why are we here?

These are profound and real questions that in today’s world, lifestyle and culture doesn’t provide the space to explore because life is very busy and it probably is politically incorrect to talk about such things in most settings for many people.

This is where Alpha comes in. Alpha provides a safe space for people to explore the larger questions of faith, life and God in a contemporary setting, from a Christian faith perspective and is specifically designed for people who have had no Christian connection or experience.

Anglican Youth Gresford (AYG) are inviting young people in the 12 – 18 years age bracket to come along and experience Alpha, a course running over about 9 weeks. There will be food, fun, conversation and learning.

Alpha will run on Thursdays, starting on the 26th August at 4.30pm. This allows young people who attend Dungog High, to use the school buses to get to Gresford. If needed, overnight accommodation and meals can be arranged, then people can catch the school bus in the morning. If you are reading this article and don’t go to Dungog High, please know that you are also very welcome to come along.

There will be a weekend away midway through the course which will be held at the Lostock Scout Houses from Friday the 8th to the 10th of October. There is no cost to participants.

Paterson Allyn Garden Group The Paterson Allyn Garden Group (PAGG), was formed over 10 years ago and for some time has had over 100 members who meet in a garden each month...mostly within the Dungog Shire.

The group has three horticulturists and focuses on increasing gardening knowledge, sharing successes and failures and providing a learning experience for its members. It is also about being aware of others in the community and looking at ways to provide support to others.

We have for some time been raising money to help organisations such as The Brain Research Foundation, Bales of hay for drought relief, supporting drought affected communities through the CWA and the building of a Gazebo on the Gresford Community Group land. This gazebo will help encourage education at all levels and support our community throughout the year.

We are currently funding a portable lightweight oxygen G4 unit for Dungog Palliative Care. This unit is worth almost $5,000 and we hope to complete our target by the end of this year. This means that patients will have adequate oxygen (up to 8 hours of oxygen) when

travelling to and from appointments in cars with volunteer drivers.

Gresford and District Landcare Group

When John and Lisa Connors were looking for somewhere to retire 14 years ago Lisa’s main criteria was water, trees, beauty and interest ... all this was evident as the Gresford and District Landcare Group visited her property for the June Landcare meeting. ‘Fig Tree Farm’, named after the four different types of figs, the majority being Morton Bay figs, growing around the house paddocks and around the property. ‘Fig Tree Farm’ provided Lisa with all her requirements.

Paterson River Oranges Raymond Terrace Examiner & Lower Hunter & Port Stephens Advertiser Fri 19 Sep 1924 p3 Paterson River orchardists have generally had a profitable season for oranges, the crop being fairly heavy and the fruit of extra good quality. There is a remarkably prolific second crop of oranges which promises to keep district fruit on the market until Christmas. Although the Paterson River growers have not yet organised a co-operative packing shed as in other citrus districts, they have their fruit packed and marketed through one channel. Mr. Frank Auckett receives consignments arriving by motor at his packing shed near the railway station. The fruit is graded direct from the wagons, and although no technical pack is used, it is so arranged that it opens up well. There are five grades, and about 800 cases weekly are being despatched.

There is a wide demand for these oranges, consignments being made to the north and north-west, the north coast, and to Newcastle and Maitland. Growers receive full sale price less a regular deduction per ease to cover packing and marketing expenses. The fruit from most of the orchards is very clean and of good marketable size.

The ancestry of Paterson River oranges goes back to the early days of settlement on the Hunter and its tributaries, when grants were made to approved settlers. It is said that some of the immigrants who eventually settled on the Paterson brought out seeds from Madeira, obtained from Madeira oranges, the sailing vessels generally making calls at the islands on their voyage round the Cape. These were planted along the rivers, and many of the present-day trees are from the old stock.

Great numbers of motorists travel to Paterson during the weekend to enjoy the sylvan beauty of the riverside and to purchase baskets or bags of the famous oranges, noted for their thin skin, full flesh, and excellent flavour.

And finally, the August meeting of the Gresford District Historical Society is unlikely to go ahead given the current restrictions, and Gresford Museum is also closed until further notice.
