Arboretum is blooming for Christmas It has been a busy month at the Arboretum with the main emphasis on watering to keep our precious trees alive and growing. Jim and Sueanne Martin have been a great help with holding hoses. All the species planted in the arboretum will be drought tolerant once they are established but need a helping hand in this dry time.

It was exciting to see the Lacebark tree flowering for the first time and the Native Frangipannis have been blooming for weeks .

If you would like to spend an hour or two holding a hose and contemplating the future of this exciting project, please ring Penny on 4938 9365 or Janie on 4938 9189.

We will be enriching the planting in autumn when the worst of the summer is over.

Visitors to the recent Landcare Field day enjoyed a wander through the arboretum and were interested in the diverse range of species that are native to this area.

Success at last

Become a Friend of the Gresford Arboretum

The Gresford District Historical Society Inc has been successful in gaining a grant of $1950 from the Dungog Shire Council Small Community Grants.

This will be the balance of money needed to fence the job of historic gravesites at Carrabolla in which there are five people buried.

Thanks must go to the Mayor, Tracey Norman who has given her Mayoral allowance $25,000 and Hunter Water $25,000 to fund these grants. Council hopes that these grants will be an annual occurrence as they provide much-needed grant money to fund community projects.

Are you interested in local native plants and birds perhaps and what they like to eat?

Do you want to become familiar with the disappearing flora of the Paterson Allyn Valley before its too late.

Do you have an hour to spare to hold a hose and contemplate this growing venture.

Lobbying for improved management in the Upper Allyn & Paterson rivers On Monday 18 November Martin Fallding from the National Parks Association of NSW (Hunter Branch) made an excellent presentation to Dungog Council supporting proposed changes to the management of the Upper Paterson and Allyn Catchments.

He was supported by representatives from the Gresford District Community Group and David Smith from Dungog.

There is concern in the Gresford district at a rise in vandalism, destructive and violent behaviour in the Upper Allyn Camping areas. Council was encouraged to support any changes which could improve the preservation of these unique and heritage listed areas and increase safety and progressive tourism in the catchment.

Gresford News Notices Carols Gresford Carols

This is a community carols event to be held at St Anne’s Anglican Church Gresford on Thursday, 19 December, 2019 at 6pm.

The evening will consist of a variety of activities including a puppet presentation by the students of Vacy Public School, and will feature children from Gresford Public School’s choral group, a community choir and of course the opportunity for everyone to join in plenty of carol singing in preparation for Christmas Day. After the program, the community is invited to stay for a free sausage sizzle and pre-Christmas get together in the beautiful grounds of St Anne’s. We promise to have everyone fed and watered by 8pm, however we do encourage people to hang around over a quiet drink and nibbles well into the evening.

We encourage everyone to mark this in their diary because it is a wonderful way to come together as a community, to remember the real and

‘uncommercial’ meaning of Christmas for the whole family in the beautiful and peaceful church and surrounds of the historic St Anne’s Church Gresford.

Helpful hints

• For a low-cost meat marinade mix equal parts of white vinegar

and salad dressing. Coat meat and stand for 20 minutes.

• Spray plastic containers with cooking oil to prevent tomatoe based sauces from staining them.

• If brown sugar is hard, place a piece of bread crust in the container overnight and it will return to its normal softness.

• Peeling lots of onions?

Soak them in boiling water then allow to cool. The skin should peel off easily • To prevent eggs from cracking rub them with a slice of lemon before boiling, or place a curtain ring or safety pin in the bottom of the pan while cooking.

Gresford District Landcare Group Landholders Information day A most successful field day was held on Saturday 9th Nov. at the Gresford Community Group Property.

The day was supported by LLS and approximately 50 people attended.

Talks were given on a range of subjects including vegetation, fire, weed and water management, feral animal control and stock health issues.

Landcare hopes to hold this day every two years to welcome new landholders and provide them with information on issues that are vital to sustainable management in the catchment.

A great morning tea and lunch were provided and enjoyed by all.

River Cottage Australia's Paul West supports Dungog Growers Stall Celebrity chef Paul West was a guest at the Dungog Growers Stall in November doing a cooking demonstration and signing his new book The Edible Garden: Cookbook and Growing Guide. The book includes 3 sections – tips for growing, including my favourite – wicking beds, an A-Z of growing popular veges and a cooking section with some very tasty looking recipes.

Paul was a very jovial speaker and spoke passionately about his love of growing food and cooking with simple home-grown produce and of course mentioned his beloved hound Digger. On the day he cooked a dish with all locally sourced vegetables and eggs from the Growers Stall.

Paul talked very animatedly about life after River Cottage Australia. He spent a stint in Melbourne where he wrote his new book and now back up here working with the ABC casually on TV and radio on Gardening Australia, Back Roads and a fill-in for Macca on Australia All Over.

Paul grew up in the Upper Hunter Valley and could fit the Dungog visit in as he was on his way to his brother’s wedding.

Gresford Tennis Melbourne Cup Luncheon We had a fantastic day at Gresford Bowls Sport & Recreation Club with 70 people enjoying a 3 course meal, fashion parade, trivia, musical entertainment by ‘Taylor Made’, sweeps and raffles.

The Gresford Bowling Club proved to be a great venue. The 3 course meal was made by the tennis ladies, headed by Emily and Louise who presented nibbles and entrée to start the day followed by a main meal of cold meats and prawns accompanied by salads, made by all of the tennis ladies, and to finish the afternoon pavlova, homemade cheesecake, apple pie and fresh fruit.

STREET LIBRARY Our Street Library has been a great success. Books are changed regularly and it has a new roof. A big “thank you” to Andrew and Lindsay Smith.

DROUGHT RELIEF CWA of NSW has employed a new staff member to handle the distribution of $’s donated.

Our organisation is now handling distribution for other charities who do not have the necessary staff.

SUPPORT FOR DROUGHT AFFECTED COMMUNITIES IN NSW The CWA of NSW has been campaigning for additional support for rural communities and small business in drought support requests, especially for businesses who are not farmers but are nonetheless impacted by drought.

BOOK CLUB Some Gresford book club members attended the Dungog Literary Morning Tea and offered support for the venture.

Our next meeting December 5th at 9.30 am, 12 Durham Road, East Gresford.

This volume is anything but a nostalgic pining for ‘the good old days’. With his usual humorous flair and comic exaggeration, Glover trawls through the lack of such commonplace items in the 70s as seat belts and sunscreen, and the prevalence of smoking, drink-driving, tranquillisers; synthetic fabrics and boring food. He is more serious when discussing homophobia, sexism and racism – e.g. “It wasn’t until 1983 that a married Australian woman no longer required her husband’s permission to be issued a passport.” He also points out that, “Life in Indigenous Australia is still tough, but it’s difficult to contend that it wasn’t a whole lot worse in the past.”

As a kind of antidote to the depressing reality he serves up about decades past, Glover includes a chapter on ‘Things Worth Reclaiming from the Past’. Irony is always lurking here too, but he includes simple things many people who lived through those years would approve of such as real books; a drink of water after you get home from a walk (‘Water from a tap: bring it back.”); and the local hardware store. This book would probably appeal most to the generations that lived through these times, and he is often laugh-out-loud funny, but it is also an interesting social document. Glover laughs at our lack of sophistication in times past, but never loses sight of the privilege it can be to live in Australia.
