Arboretum has been the centre of our attention recently. We urge locals and visitors to walk around it and enjoy it now that the trees and plants are responding to the rain. In supporting other organizations, we recently helped the preschool purchase shadecloth for its playground.

Our last dinner for the year will be the Christmas BBQ at the Beatty. Red Cross Award

President of Vacy Red Cross, Elaine White has been awarded the Laurel Wreath for 50 years of dedicated service to Red Cross. Elaine joined Vacy Red Cross in 1968 and has held the following positions: Vice President - 1971-1978, 1983-1985, 1994-1998, 2010-2012 Secretary - 1986-1991 President - 1979-1982, 2005-2008, 2016 to the present. Members congratulated her at the recent meeting.

Vacy Red Cross sent $2086 to the Farmers drought relief appeal. This amount was raised at the Vacy Carnival.

New members are needed to help us help others. Meetings are held on 2nd Tuesday of each month 10.30 at Vacy Fire Brigade station. Come and join us for a cup of tea before the meeting.

Tocal’s one-time squire – Caleb Wilson He held a number of interests in the Paterson Valley when he purchased Tocal from James Webber in 1834. He set about improving the property and many of the buildings on Tocal were constructed or planned during the years he owned the property before it passed to his son, Felix, after his death in 1838.

Tocal is one of the premier estates of the Hunter Region. A book has just been published on Caleb Wilson, the second owner of Tocal, by Jean Archer.

Caleb Wilson bought the property in 1834 and it remained in the hands of the Wilson family until 1907. He had arrived in the Colony of New South Wales as a free settler in 1804 with his two small children, his wife having died during the voyage from England. He was a tailor by trade, but he initially was granted 100 acres on the Hawkesbury River at what is now Richmond.

From those beginnings he became one of the wealthiest men in the Colony. He did this through continuing in his trade, working his land, lending money and holding mortgages and by establishing a large import business with a warehouse and shop in George Street, Sydney. At the height of his wealth he built a large mansion in Potts Point, called Grantham, after the town in England where he was born. The house was demolished in the 1930’s but Grantham Street in Potts Point remains.

The book is the 30th in the All about Tocal series. The series has been created over the last 20 years with writers from the College staff and the community.

“Tocal is probably the best recorded property in Australia but there are always more topics to be researched and recorded,” College Principal, Darren Bayley said. “We are delighted to see the story of Caleb Wilson told – something we have been looking forward to and I thank Jean for her thorough and painstaking research.”

John Lill concert ‘Arguably the most successful British pianist of the 20th Century’ (The Sunday Times, London)

Only Australian Piano Recital Saturday 27 April, 2019, 8pm St Marys on Allyn, East Gresford Dear Classical music lovers, It gives me great pleasure in announcing the return of John Lill CBE who will give a recital in the St Mary on Allyn Church, East Gresford on Saturday 27th April 2019 8pm. John is only giving one recital and it will be his last performance here.

A few years ago I travelled to London to a recital he gave in the Royal Festival Hall. The London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra invited him to perform on his 70th birthday. This was a truly magnificent performance with outstanding reviews. He is reputed to be one of the greatest interpreters of Beethoven’s compositions in the world. He is arguably the most successful British pianist of the 20th century (Sunday London Times).

He still travels extensively and on his way out to Sydney next April, is giving two recitals in Tokyo. I emailed him and asked a simple question…would he be interested in performing one more time in St. Mary on Allyn Church, East Gresford. He said yes! I am so thrilled and I feel sure that you will feel the same way.

We can only seat 160 in the church and tickets will be $150 each which will include finger food and wine. All proceeds will go to various organisations within the Dungog Shire.

Gresford Remembrance Day 2018

In commemoration of the 100th year since Armistice of the First World War, the Gresford Community and visitors attended the Gresford Memorial in large numbers on a picture perfect Day. Gresford RSL Sub Branch Secretary, Glenn Wall described the day as quite remarkable and a credit to the Gresford Community Group and RSL Sub Branch.

Mr. Robert Richardson the Sub Branch Vice President and Community Group member officiated on the day and introduced the RSL Treasurer John Casey to offer the meaning of Remembrance Day. Mr Noel Brown from the Community Group spoke about the sacrifice of so many and the remarkable contribution Australia made to the war effort given our Nation's small population from 1914 to 1918.

shores for another place It turned out to be their own special Hell at Gallipoli, The Western Front, and in the Middle East till the guns fell silent.

Even on their return the smell of gas, the sounds of ordinance exploding, the stench and memory of lost mates was never far behind.

These everyday people left their stable lives, families, jobs and farms, came from the cities, country towns and villages that Australians, like us, now gather to honour and remember those who served their country and in turn served us standing here today.

We will never know why they enlisted.

- Their love of Country - Their loyalty to the crown - They felt it was the right thing to do - or possibly in pursuit of adventure 300,000 served overseas. 60,000 died and are buried on foreign soil.

Today over 100,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen and servicewoman remain where they died on every continent and in every ocean of the world and in concentrating on the Great War it in no way diminishes the debt we owe to all those who served in following conflicts and are serving today.

There is an old saying “Heroes have the world as their tomb in lands far from their own” How true is this of Australia.

On this solemn day we should also remember the sacrifice and heartbreak of the families who watched them leave praying for their safe return.

60,000 did not return and those who did thousands were physically and emotionally wounded. It was the families and friends who stepped in to support them, often for decades.

As national heroes The “Anzac” The “Digger” can never be relegated to folklore. They are our history they are in our DNA and as much part of us today as 100 years ago and we should be eternally grateful for their sacrifice and their legacy of the free and independent life we live.

These men and women taught us to endure hardship, to be bold, resilient, to believe in ourselves and to stick together. In doing so they set the standard and forged a firm path into the modern era for each generation that followed.

REMEMRANCE is to remember with respect.

REVERENCE is to feel deep respect, admiration and awe.

On this Remembrance Day 100 years from the Armistice, and every year hence, let us remember with respect and show reverence to those ordinary people who did extraordinary things.

Paterson recognises Armistice Day

The end of The Great War was a time of jubilation and celebration. The Western World had been through 5 years of devasting war, deprivation and misery. The impact went to all corners of the earth, especially countries which formed part of the British Empire.

The Paterson District lost some of its finest young men, others returned home broken never to reach their potential in life. Of the 54 who enlisted 18 did not return so local families paid a high price in what was supposed to be the war to end all wars.

We know that celebrations were held in Paterson, in fact the bell at the Presbyterian Church was rung so much it cracked.

To mark the ending of the Great War local farmer and historian John Tucker planted a Pecan nut tree in the corner of his farm.

This now abuts Tucker Park. Its existence is drawn to the attention of those who take the annual Paterson Historic Walk.

Some years ago, a local resident propagated a nut from the tree that grew to become a very healthy young tree. It was offered to the Paterson Historical Society to plant in John Tucker Park to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice.

The tree was planted at 3pm on Armistice Day by Mr John Casey of the Gresford RSL Sub-branch witnessed by around 30 local people some of whose families lost members in The Great War. Following the planting Mr Casey addressed the gathering and then Dr Cameron Archer, President of the Paterson Historical Society, read out a list of all those who enlisted from Paterson, Vacy and Martins Creek noting those who lost their lives. A minute’s Mr John Casey of Gresford RSL Sub-branch and Dr Cameron Archer, President, Paterson Historical Society following the planting of a pecan nut silence was observed to tree in John Tucker Park, Paterson, Armistice Day, 2018. conclude the ceremony.

Melbourne cup luncheon 2018 A wonderful, fun day was enjoyed by over 60 people at Gresford Sports, Recreation & Bowling Club on Tuesday, 6th November. The Melbourne Cup luncheon was organized by the Gresford Social Tennis ladies to help raise funds for the Gresford Tennis Club.

The musical duo of Sophie and Ryan provided beautiful background music throughout the day. Sweeps and two raffles were held with prizes generously donated by several community businesses.

Beautifully modelled by Lucy, Raymond, Ella, Emily, Lyndell and Kristy with summer clothes for toddlers up to ladies. $5 gift vouchers were presented to all that attended on the day. Fashions of the field were awarded to best dressed lady, Denise Sellens and best dressed man, Allyn Litchfield, who were presented with rose basket arrangements made by Heather Williams. Dessert, tea and coffee followed while we awaited the race that stops the nation.

A great community effort by all made this day very successful, many thanks to Karen and Leanne from the Gresford Bowling Club for your assistance on the day A delicious buffet lunch was served and all the volunteers who helped with entrees & salads made by the in anyway.

At over six hundred pages, this novel is not one for headlong readers. The narrative method is meandering and works on several levels. The backbone is recollections by an elderly woman of her past, whereby detailed accounts of her younger days and her present life are intertwined.

The narrative is also interspersed with newspaper articles and obituaries involving the people in her stories, as well as a bizarre sci-fi tale of a society built around human sacrifice, which is told by a man to his lover in a clandestine love affair. This gives the book its title.

In spite of this complexity the novel is not confusing, which may be a result of the slow pace. Atwood is a masterly writer, who depicts the passing of time and historical events such as the Depression and world wars through domestic detail and social distinctions. There is also humour in the narrator’s observations of the characters in her life and the recording of their dialogue, showing small-town prejudices and snobbery.

This is a book of depth and intricacy, which some readers will find most absorbing.

PAGG – Garden Ramble 2019 The vision defining the ramble includes not just five amazingly varied gardens, but has a distinct historical flavour, by the inclusion of “Duninald” on the outskirts of Paterson and the old Lindemans property “Cawarra” on the outskirts of Gresford, where owners will be on hand to talk about the long history of those properties and their gardens.

The Paterson Allyn Garden Group after 8 successful and varied years has decided to hold its first ever garden ramble on Sunday 7 April 2019, which will include 5 special gardens in the Paterson and Allyn valleys.

Mayoral Update 26 November 2018 Deputy Premier I had the opportunity to briefly catch up with the Deputy Premier, Mr John Barilaro MP, who is also the Minister for Regional NSW, at an event last week. I reiterated my invitation to him to visit Dungog to see what our proactive Council and community are doing to improve the the financial viability of our Shire, particularly our roads and timber bridges and our interest in partnering with State Government in this task. The Deputy Premier indicated a willingness to visit the Shire and I will follow this up with a written invitation.

Councillors supported a Local Government NSW initiative to Save Our Recycling. Council will advocate for a return of 100% of the Waste Levy to Council for waste minimisation, recycling and resource recovery initiatives. NSW councils currently only receive 18% of the Levy back.

Shifting Report For the past decade LGNSW has been measuring the rate of cost-shifting from State and Federal Government to Local Government. It has just released a report on 2015-16 figures and Dungog Shire Council has the dubious honour of being the worse affected rural council in the state, with close to 10% of our income being lost to cost-shifting. The report identifies the top five issues in rural areas as the mandatory emergency services levy; library funding; the companion animals act; the waste levy and the pensioner rebate scheme (which in all other states and territories is 100% subsidised by the government whereas in NSW it is only 55% subsidised).

Dungog’s situation, of course, is further complicated by the transfer of responsibility for roads previously under RMS control to Dungog Shire Council in the 1990s, which has added considerably to our burden to fund on-going maintenance and renewal costs as well as depreciation. This is one of the points that we are strongly impressing on both the State Government and opposition in the lead up to the election.

Measures advocated by LGNSW include putting an end to cost-shifting; return 100% of the Waste Levy to councils, rather than the 18% that is currently returned; sustainable funding for libraries; reimburse councils for mandatory pensioner rebates in line with other states and territories that fund 100% of pensioner concessions; introduce fairer emergency services funding and give councils greater financial independence. I

Tillegra Dam Debate Along with other Councillors, I have been asked by a Facebook group where I “stand as an individual” and for my “personal opinion” on Tillegra Dam. I have answered this question here rather than reply to the Facebook group because I thought there would be benefit in it reaching a wider audience, and to ensure that you received an unedited version.

My individual and personal opinion is irrelevant. It is not State Government policy to build Tillegra Dam, it is not Hunter Water Corporation’s policy to build Tillegra Dam and building Tillegra Dam does not form part of the soon to be released 20-year Regional Water Strategy for the Hunter. The Department of Premier and Cabinet has reinforced this in writing to Dungog Council’s General Manager. Managing Director of Hunter Water Corporation, Dr Jim Bentley, recently advised Council that the Board of Hunter Water have formally resolved on this matter and that Tillegra Dam is not a priority for any future work. Hunter Water Corporation’s direction is in concentrating on demand management and the disruption that may occur there, in better asset management to avoid leakage and in decentralised supply solutions. And finally, Tillegra Dam has not been identified as a potential project under the Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund.

As for decisions on which I do have a say, that is decisions of Council, while I always consider my values in the decisions I make, it is not a councillor’s role make decisions based on their individual stance and personal opinion of an issue. The role of a councillor and the mayor is enshrined in the Local Government Act 1993. I am guided in my decision-making by legislation, by council policies that have had the benefit of community input, by advice from the professional staff, by evidence-based discussion and by what members of the community have strongly indicated matters to them through the Council adopted Community Strategic Plan.

Q FEVER VACCINATION Hunter Local Land Services is working with local health providers to help producers access Q Fever vaccinations. Q fever is one of the most prevalent diseases spread from animals to people in Australia with around 500 human cases per year, caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. District Vet Kylie Greentree is concerned livestock producers and their families might not be aware of the risks caused by this illness. “Some people show no symptoms but others with Q-fever may develop flu like symptoms, headaches, muscle aches, fever, sweating, endocarditis,” said Dr Greentree. “Up to 15-20% of sufferers’ progress to a chronic illness with chronic fatigue that can be debilitating for years, muscle pain, depression, hepatitis, pneumonia and heart failure which can be fatal.”

Q Fever can spread from any animal including cattle, sheep, goats, wildlife and even dogs and cats. The bacteria can survive in the environment for years and with current dusty drought conditions the organism could be stirred up and spread kilometres in the wind. Human infection usually occurs by inhaling the organism, but infection also occurs with direct contact with infected animals or drinking unpasteurised milk.

“In recent weeks we have heard of new cases of local producers being affected by Q Fever, and we want to encourage landholders to consider vaccination. We are the only country in the world with a vaccination available to prevent Q fever in humans and the vaccination is safe and the most effective way to prevent Q fever infection in high-risk occupations such as farming.”

Vaccination is a two-step process involving pre-screening and vaccination. Hunter LLS is in discussion with several doctors in the region to get reduced vaccination costs for local producers.
