Thank you for your kindness

The response from the wider communities of Lostock, Gresford, Vacy, Martin’s Creek and Paterson for our “Margie’s Ugg and Rug” Sunday, has been outstanding. We, the Parish, have been overwhelmed by the generosity of so many people giving to those less fortunate than themselves. I have seen firsthand how this generosity has helped countless people in our neighbouring communities. A heartfelt thanks to you all. Thanks go to Gresford Foodworks and the Paterson Friendly for being ‘drop off’ places for us, your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks also go to Val Leahy, Jean Sparkes and Val Fuller from Medowie CWA, for their sewing and many gifts of food and clothes to help those in need.

Market Restarting!

The aim of this monthly market is encouraging producers, growers and makers to participate in a local market and the community to get to know them and shop locally. The markets will hopefully bring more visitors to the town who will also support our local shops, cafe and pub.

On the grounds of the Therese Doyle Hall the markets will be held on the Second Saturday of the month to compliment the Dungog, Paterson and Clarencetown Markets that take place on the other weekends of the month.

We hope to have a range of stall holders including honey, fresh fruit and veg, mushrooms, baked goods, oils and condiments, leather goods, clothing and accessories. October 12 is being suggested as our first market date to allow us time to complete some signage, promotion and secure some great stall holders! Our stall holder fees are super reasonable and assistance will be given to new stall holders.

If you are a potential stall holder we would just love to hear from you so email Pip – pip2303@protonmail.com

Hunter Water Regulation on public exhibition

The Regulation that supports Hunter Water to provide water and wastewater services to more than 630,000 people across the region is up for renewal, and now is the time to have your say.

The Regulation plays a key role in enabling Hunter Water to protect water quality in drinking water catchments, protect Hunter Water assets, implement water restrictions during drought, and fine people or corporations when they don’t comply with rules relating to Special Areas, plumbing and drainage works and water restrictions.

We have drafted a revised Regulation with minor changes and updates to streamline it, make it fairer, and clarify its intent. The proposed changes include clarifying definitions, updating references, increasing some penalties for breaching water restrictions to bring them in-line with other similar fines, and updating language to reflect online administration.

Based on our Regulatory Impact Statement, we do not expect the proposed changes to have major impacts on residents, businesses or other stakeholders, and they do not affect water rates or charges.

We invite the entire community including Hunter Water customers, residents, councils, Aboriginal people, environmental and industry groups to make a submission on the proposed changes before 14 July. We will then carefully consider all feedback which will help inform the final remade Regulation. If approved, it will commence on or before 1 September and remain in effect until at least 2029. For more information and to lodge a submission, visit: https://water.nsw.gov. au/hunter-water-regulation-remake

NSW DCCEEW Executive Director of Operations Resilience, Ashraf El-Sherbini, said: “Hunter Water is NSW’s second-largest water utility supporting one of the fastest growing regions, currently servicing one in 13 people in our state.Remaking the Regulation is essential so Hunter Water can continue to deliver world-class services to hundreds of thousands of households and businesses across the region, while safeguarding water quality and protecting waterways and the environment. We want to hear your views on the proposed changes, and we invite everyone to make a submission before 14 July.”

What's On the Shelves? by Glenda Smith Devotion

– Hannah Kent

This book was a CWA Book Club choice, and generally enjoyed for its historical perspective and excellent writing. Kent tends to layer spiritual and fantastic elements into the narrative, and Devotion is certainly no exception to that inclination.

The main character, Hanne, is a kind of wild child, not fitting in well to her conservative Lutheran community, which itself is out of step with their broader society. They are seen as an heretical sect and eventually make the move to emigrate to Australia. The story depicts the harsh and noisome journey to the new world of South Australia and the eventual settlement now familiar in places such as Hahndorf.

Luckily for Hanne, her best friend and soulmate Thea emigrates at the same time, but sickness and dreadful conditions must be endured on the ship, and fear of condemnation from their elders. The narrative arc of this novel is rather unusual and will disappoint some readers while enchanting others.

CWA News

It's been a very quiet couple of months for the CWA, as May's meeting was cancelled because of Tocal and other matters and the June meeting was curtailed by bad weather.

CWA State Conference This took place in late May with congratulations given to NSW branches for donations of over $110,000 in three years towards research on Ovarian Cancer at the University of Newcastle. The next fundraising focus is for Pancreatic Cancer. The theme of the conference was Cultivate Kindness – an excellent principle. Lyn Tunin received a Highly Commended for her Group Cultural Report to State.

A Sad Loss Gresford CWA member Gillian Brookes died recently. Gillian was very involved in both the CWA book club, and the French group. She also contributed items towards the Easter fundraising stall. She had been very ill for some time but persevered in her involvement with impressive grace and courage. Vale Gillian, and deepest condolences to her family.

Pennant Party at the Bowlo

The club held a Pennant Party on the 25th of May to thank the pennant players for their effort and dedication to this year’s competition.

A BBQ lunch of huge, delicious hamburgers with all the trimmings was followed by an afternoon of social

bowls. Pennant players and part timers joined in the fun.

That’s Kelly Crowley (in red) showing flashes of brilliance. Her bowl is long gone out of frame yet she holds her follow through. ‘Oysters’ Kilpatrick’s green and yellow bowl cuddling the jack

in the foreground is pretty good (we’ll call his other attempts sighters!). It looks like a winning, albeit vulnerable, position and with the opposing skip’s bowl to come did he survive? I guess we’ll never ever know.

Greetings to our readers. Recently I was sorting through some of my older paintings in storage and found the Pub Culture painting. I thought this work would be perfect hanging in the Hotel Beatty. We installed it in the hotel lounge, now on permanent loan, the photo shows Bernie the publican standing beside it. The painting was originally done for Pub Culture Exhibition at Maitland Regional Art Gallery in 2005. Drop in to the hotel, you may recognise some of the people portrayed in the painting.

Comedy fun-raiser for Public School

Gresford Public School P&C held their biannual fundraiser on Saturday 22nd of June. The Gresford school of arts hall came alive with belly laughs from the fabulous comedians provided by comedy for a cause.

As always the P&C was well supported by the Community providing donations, buying tickets to the event and purchasing auction items on the night. We are yet to finalise the bean count but it is looking like a very successful evening.

Gresford Public School P&C wish to thank all who supported our fundraiser and made it such a success. Our community is always behind us in our endeavour to make sure our children have the best possible experiences, learning opportunities and technology available to them.

Funds raised from this event will be used to support funding a STEAM teacher for the school.

Again we can not thank you enough for your support.

Paterson Allyn Garden Group

Thankfully, we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day for our visit to The Dirty Gardener Nursery in Woodville, where our host – Tracee Cook, was very welcoming and happy to show off her wonderful array of plants. Liz was back in the Chair and provided the welcome talk for the 32 members and 1 visitor who attended.

As usual, Liz provided her bit of useless information – It is suggested we should pour the cooled water from our boiled eggs onto the vegetable garden, due to the beneficial effects of the calcium from the eggshells.

Liz introduced Tracee & proceeded with a one-on-one Q&A covering a wide range topics. It probably comes as no surprise that Tracee’s least liked job is weeding, although as a true optimist, she finds some therapeutic benefits in the task. Tracee has been involved and enjoyed gardening since aged 7, after being introduced to it by her father. She decided to get serious about gardening after a stressful career in OH&S in WA, starting a nursery, appropriately in Floraville before relocating to the present site a few years ago.

THE RURAL SPECIALIST

SELLING ALL TYPES OF COUNTRY PROPERTIES

As a bit of advice on maintaining the garden, Tracee likes to wander around her garden with a coffee or glass of wine#, communicating with the plants, looking for trouble & just enjoying the serenity. An interesting discussion was held amongst the members, where we learnt about Hydrangea’s including that they are best planted over November / December. Tracee said they should be called Hydrate-me’s as they love plenty of water and shade.

A question regarding Grapefruit and how long it might take for them to produce fruit & it depends on if they are grown from seed or from a grafted plant. Seed grown plants will take approximately 7 years, as opposed to a much quicker timeframe for the grafted type of probably 3 – 4 years.

A good guide for the viability of planting in clay is to dig a hole and fill with water then see how long it takes to drain – to be able to plant in clay, the hole It should take no more than 30 minutes to drain. If it doesn’t drain away, then don’t plant as it is like planting in a bucket. You can use gypsum to help break down the clay and put good soil in

to give the plant a good base. It was recommended to place compost and mulch around the plant once it is planted, rather than in the hole.

The issue of Gall Wasp came up & the best way to manage them is to cut off the affected parts of the plant, then bag & burn them. This needs to be done by the end of August. Some, more patient members, are using a scalpel to scrap the gall.

What do you do with autumn leaves on the lawn – should these be raked up or

put into compost or what was the best solution. Penny, Jen and Tracee all agreed that the leaves should be mowed to act as mulch for the lawn/grass. The team further added, especially in winter, not to mow too low as over winter this will be detrimental and encourage the growth of the dreaded bindi.

Next month, weather permitting, we will have our meeting at “Slow Dance”, Wallaringa. Details will be emailed as usual the Tuesday prior.

Roads To Recovery Funding 2024-29

Mayor Connors has put forward a mayoral minute encouraging Council to acknowledge the correspondence received of an increase in funding to the Roads to Recovery grant for the period 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2029.

Over the five-year period, the Council was to receive $3.25 million, however

RICHARD WELLS UPHOLSTERY

the increase in funding will see Council receive $5,058 456 over the same period, representing an increase of $1.8 million.

Mayor Connors acknowledged that while it is not a huge increase in funding, it is an increase nonetheless and the Ministers should be acknowledged and thanked.

Advocacy For Dungog Shire

Community Centre – Services Australia

Mayor Connors is calling on the Australian Government to support the Dungog Shire Community Centre (DSCC) in its request to increase the funding it receives for a Services Australia agent, who provides vital government (Centrelink) services for the Dungog community.

Currently, the Services Australia agent is contracted for four hours per day or a total of 20 hours per week. In 2021/22 the service cost the DSCC over $7,000, however in 2023/24 the cost was approximately $12,000. This cost increase places undue pressure on the DSCC’s financial sustainability and provision of other community services in the Shire.

Mayor Connors said he had been contacted by the DSCC for help and will contact The Hon. Amanda Rishworth MP:

UCI Pump Track World Championships qualifier events are held all over the world including Switzerland, Canada, Germany and the USA. Council acknowledged the choice of Dungog as a host location is a wonderful outcome for the shire, and provides the opportunity to showcase the region to hundreds of visitors over the course of a few days.

Council endorsed to provide in-kind support, as well as a Gold $5000 sponsorship for the event, and also approved Council staff to determine if there are sufficient funds available for an additional $5000 contribution.
