A Bit of a Slip The separation of Dungog’s two major river valleys came into sharp focus last month with the closure of Bingleburra Road between Dungog and Gresford due to a major landslip. One lane has been re-opened to traffic as of Friday 16 April, with traffic control lights sensitive to actual movements in traffic, to reduce waiting time for road users. – Read more page 22 inside

The Gresford Rural Fire Brigade, will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 2 June 2021.

Elections of all Field Officers and Administration Positions will be conducted during the meeting.

Anzac Day 2021 in Vacy Members of the Vacy RFS Brigade paid their respects to the fallen Anzacs at dawn on ANZAC Day.

Hello, I recently returned to Australia from India 8 months and 6 failed flights later than planned. I was so lucky to be welcomed and looked after by friends and family after a very stress filled year, and really appreciate what a safe and beautiful place our valley is.

Two Brigade members are currently serving with the RAAF Williamtown.

Years ago, I taught Indian Cooking Classes for Dungog Community Centre, and I would like to do something similar again as a way to reconnect with our community, share recipes and feast together. Any funds raised will be donated to The Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, after a year of stress and waiting I feel like I have a hint of how they must feel. Life can be a challenge and we are not all so lucky to have friends and family to catch us.

This will be a Rajasthani /North Indian feast where you can learn about the flavours and culture of food in Rajasthan, India. There will be a cooking class and set of recipes for those who want to help cook. We will start at 3.30pm.

If you want to eat our feast arrive at 6.30pm. Dinner is $50pp, cooking class and recipes – gratis.

We will be holding our feast at the beautiful Twin Rivers Café. We would welcome donations of produce – eggs, vegetables, what do you have in abundance?

Gresford Landcare and the summer of Gpg fungus by spraying out soil trooper.

Patience is all that is required while waiting for the fungus to spread.

It seems that every year there is a dominant pasture weed. Last summer we all got smothered in farmer’s friends and our drought-recovering pastures got more than their fair share of the ugly and aptly named crab grass. This year has been the year of GPG. And such a blossoming and spreading despite the widespread and increasing applications of what was previously called parra trooper, now soil trooper.

The application of parra trooper was designed to spread the native fungus Nigrospora oryzae, which attacks the base of the GPG plant, gradually spreading out to infect more plants.

After being categorised as an “unregistered agricultural chemical”, it was re-named soil trooper and although it cannot be sold for its original purpose, most people still purchase and apply it in an attempt to control GPG. Gresford Landcarers met at the property of Jim and Sueanne Martin in April, with a focus on pastures and weeds. Jim, like many other graziers, considers GPG to be his “worst” weed. The excellent conditions this summer have encouraged its spread.

Glyphosate can be sprayed, but of course it kills everything it touches. The seed bank is still there to come up next year and GPG will take full advantage of any bare patches caused by the previous application of glyphosate.

Other chemicals have their own problems. For best results (but time consuming) cut back tussocks and apply glyphosate to young green growth in spring. But not really practical for those with hundreds, or thousands, of acres. And of course, for those who are poisonfree, these suggestions are not helpful at all.

Mt Rivers street library A little bit of information about our street library. I have loved books for as long as I can remember. I have a whole room dedicated to them in my house. A couple of years ago a friend of mine introduced me to the concept of street libraries. She too loves reading, she loves biographies, and knew that I like Australian historical fiction, so would look for books for me on her visits to street libraries.

Last year my husband and I visited the Armidale region and I used the website to visit many street libraries on our journey. It was during this time that I decided I wanted to start one of my own. Dowling Street Beautification and Revitalisation

The Federal and New South Wales Governments have been delivering record investment for roads and bridges across the Dungog, Clarence Town and Gresford region.

We know how vital tourism is for our region, and how important having up-to-date town facilities are. That’s why we’ve delivered over $2.6 million towards the Dowling Street Beautification and Revitalisation Project. The significant streetscaping and beautification included installation of floodlighting at pedestrian crossings, street furniture, footpaths, cycleways and refreshed gardens that enhance and revitalise the heart of Dungog.

We’re getting on with the job of delivering safer roads throughout the region, so that you get home safer and faster.

Significant Works for our Shires Roads Blackspots Our electorate has a lot of roads! From Wauchope to Paterson, our electorate has everything from the Pacific Highway to one lane dirt roads.

That’s why I’ve focused on improving the condition of our roads and am proud to have delivered over $3.4 million for the Dungog Shire recently to seal and refurbish local roads under the Blackspots program.

Fourteen projects in the Dungog Shire have been started or completed through this program, including the $510,000 upgrade of the Dungog Road, Merchants Road and Gardiners Road intersections at Martins Creek, and the $260,000 upgrade to the Clarence Town Road and Glen William Road intersection in Brookfield.

But that’s not all - we’ve funded a number of projects across the region with work currently underway or competed including:

Building the new Brig O’Johnston Bridge

Bucketts Way safety upgrades - $25 million

The Nationals in Government delivered over $28 million to upgrade the Clarence Town Road between Raymond Terrace and Dungog - with $8.8 million set aside for the new Brig O’Johnston bridge.

Bingleburra Road - $1.26 million

These works will improve freight efficiency, extend existing B-Double networks and boost the productivity of local industries.

Clarence Town Road and Timber Tops Road upgrade - $460,000 Dungog Road (from Wallaringa Road to 800m east) - $470,000 Dungog Road and Homs Crossing Road - $399,000

It’s also an important road for families who are traveling to work and school and for our primary producers who are getting product to market. These works will ensure a safer journey for all.

$924,000 has now been allocated for the resealing and improvement of Flat Top Road.

These works will improve safety and allow better access for tourists to the region, which will be a draw-card for our community.

Ivan Skaines appointed Chair of Arts Upper Hunter Maitland. “The AUH Board has a diverse background and skills and expertise in all areas of the creative industries” said Ivan.

Ivan Skaines has been elected Chair of Arts Upper Hunter (AUH), a community organisation which provides, supports and promotes opportunities for people and organisations involved in the Creative Industries across the Shires of Dungog, Muswellbrook, Singleton and Upper Hunter. He was previously Vice Chair.

Ivan is looking forward to being able to make a contribution to the creativity of the Upper Hunter. “I am a long-term resident of the Gresford area and a former employee of Dungog Shire Council where my responsibilities included tourism, economic development and events. I am currently Grants and Community Engagement Co-ordinator for Muswellbrook Shire Council, and a member and volunteer for several local community organisations including Gresford District Historical/Museum, Vacy Community Arts Centre and Paterson Historical Society/Museum. “

Other members are of the Board of Arts Upper Hunter Council delegates Robert Booth (Dungog – current Vice Chair and former Chair), Kim Manwarring (Muswellbrook – Treasurer), Cr Danny Thompson (Singleton) and Jacqui Bakewell (Upper Hunter). Discovering a tiny world on the Allyn – Allyn River Fungi Foray

Around 30 people from the local area and the wider region participated in finding fungi in the rainforest of the Upper Allyn River on Sunday 11 April.

This was held in beautiful Autumn weather and followed recent rains that left the forest lush and damp.

The fungi walk followed a talk in Dungog organised by the Paterson Allyn Williams Science Hub the evening before which explained the importance of fungi, their characteristics, and incredible variety. The walk was organised by the Hunter Branch of the National Parks Association in conjunction with the Science Hub led by mycologist Pam O’Sullivan, from the Central Coast (who co-authored a Field guide to common fungi of the Hunter region) and knowledgeable locals Jamie and Danja Derkenne. A short walk from the Peach Tree picnic area on the Allyn River through the picturesque rainforest walking track examined the

importance of fungi to the ecosystem, such as their role as decomposers and nutrient recycling and the food they provide for a range of animals.

This was the third annual fungi foray in the Upper Allyn Valley and found over 50 species. Most interestingly, many species were different to others found in previous years. This highlights the vast variety of fungi in this area and its biological importance.

Soil – light through to moderately heavy with good moisture and drainage, soils with high lime content can lead to yellowing foliage and poor growth. In heavier soils suggested to build raised beds.

Propagation: easy for the home gardener to cultivate a. Seed: can be done all year round, placing the container under glass, germination can take between 2 and 5 weeks, takes 2 to 3 years before flowering and 5 to 6 years to attain full height. b. Cuttings: Take in late spring, these should retain original colour Banksia spinulosa attracts bees, birds, and insects and has few known pests. These perennial plants, with stunning flowers makes an impressive cut flower display.

Height can vary between 1m and 3m.

Flower cones are 10cm – 20cm, in length, long flowering period from autumn through winter to spring, showing the three stages of cone development – bud, flower spike and seed capsule.

Pruning is not required but a little if needed. It has been suggested as an easy guide, to cutting off the finished flower spikes, trimming off any dead branches, it can be pruned to size if required.

Tracy Norman Independent for the Upper Hunter You, the electors have a wonderful opportunity on 22 May at the Upper Hunter by-election to restore community control over who represents us in State Parliament.

Our community has been let down by both the major p arties who ignore our needs and take us for granted. I want to change that. I will fight to protect our great lifestyle and create a better future for the next generation.

I have been encouraged to run for the seat of the Upper Hunter by many community members who believe it is time for better, more ethical representation in our Parliament. I am an Independent who’s only loyalty is to you the people of our community.

If elected my top five priorities are better health services, fixing our roads, diversifying our economy, supporting local business and bringing back ethical standards to our politics.

As Mayor I fought hard to deliver the services our community

needs, better roads, health and to grow our existing and new industries.

In my time as Mayor of Dungog, we achieved record grant funding for roads, bridges and recreational facilities.

I secured funding promised in the 2013 Federal Election and fixed the decade old issue over the bridge at Clarence Town. I listened to the community’s concerns and communicated with you. I ask for your support so that I can continue to support you.

Lost Paterson and Allyn Valleys 90 years ago on Wednesday 22 April 1931 the middle section of the Camyr Allyn Bridge was washed away. The photograph was taken by local school teacher Edgar Marceau on 20 (?) May 1931 and has been provided by the Local History Section of the Newcastle Library, Laman Street, Newcastle.

And the following story is from the Dungog Chronicle: Durham and Gloucester Advertiser, Fri 24 Apr 1931, Page 2.

CAMYR ALLYN BRIDGE Washed Away The Camyr Allyn bridge situated on the GresfordAllynbrook road was washed away in the flood on Wednesday. It was a very high structure and was over 200 feet long.

The water had not covered the bridge.

Mr. Engineer J. H. McGowen is of the opinion that a big log must have smashed a centre pile allowing the structure to collapse. Damage is estimated at £3,000.

CWA News WRAP WITH LOVE: A very generous donation of wool from Sandra has enabled many members and friends to knit squares for the charity Wrap With Love, expertly put together by Joyce Earngey.

The wraps are distributed to women’s shelters in the Newcastle area with some going overseas when Lions or Rotary are sending containers of goods to underdeveloped countries in times of need.

The Gresford CWA has been hamstrung by covid-19 rules and regulations. Only a few meetings. No meet and greet and chat and tea and coffee and no way to fund raise.

Costs on our building continue to rise insurance, water, electricity, rates, lawn mowing etc. Hopefully the second half of this year will see us out and about again.

BOOK CLUB: Meets in the CWA rooms on the second Saturday of the month. The book for May 8th is “The Yield”

by Tara June Winch. This book was the winner of the Miles Franklin award in 2020.

NEW TO THE AREA: Do not forget to pick up a copy of “Wood of Cranes” by Christopher Fibbins. It is a beautifully presented and extensively researched history of the area. You can purchase from Twin Rivers Café and the Gresford Historical Society.

by Sebastien Barry Like The Secret Scripture, previously reviewed here, this novel is written from the point of view of an elderly woman as she records the events of her long and eventful life. Lilly Bere is devastated by the suicidal death of her grandson, and in contemplating following him, reveals the toll that war has taken on her family.

Her father and boyfriend were on the ‘wrong’ side of the Irish Troubles, and the solution of emigration to the United States is only partially successful, though Lilly encounters kindness in addition to sorrow. While this may sound maudlin, the quality of Barry’s writing allows the reader to be immersed in the events of Lilly’s life, and we come to admire her endurance and ability to appreciate the small beauties of life in spite of her grief.

Many readers will value the social and cultural history that unfolds in this novel – of both Ireland and America, and those who appreciate Barry’s prose will have plenty to enjoy.

All books reviewed are from the CWA library on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder. Also have a look in the street library.

The evening is open to all interested members of the Dungog Shire community to attend.

Dungog Shire Council Focus in and around Gresford The separation of Dungog’s two major river valleys came into sharp focus last month with the closure of Bingleburra Road between Dungog and Gresford due to a major landslip. One lane has been re-opened to traffic as of Friday 16 April, with traffic control lights sensitive to actual movements in traffic, to reduce waiting time for road users.

Due to the extent and nature of this landslip, Council plans to submit an application for funding under the NSW disaster recovery arrangements to help fund the extensive rehabilitation required in this area.

the Upper Hunter happening on 22 May, Council will be lobbying all candidates to reconsider the Shire’s need for this critical funding and to deliver on what our community deserves. To this end, the council has put together an advocacy document highlighting Dungog’s critical infrastructure funding priorities.

Council currently manages a 717.39km road network – one of the largest in NSW, with a ratepayer base of only 5,000. Council relies on NSW Government grant programs to deliver critical infrastructure upgrades to our road network and importantly, to keep locals employed, support tourism and contribute to the regional economy.

Over 52% of Council’s annual revenue is from grants and contributions.

Council is seeking real commitment from all candidates to assist it in attracting the necessary funding to meet funding priorities and current backlogs.

Council is also lobbying for prioritisation of the promised reclassification of selected regional roads that provide regional linkages and service state assets including national parks, state forests and water storage facilities. The Council has limited ability to continue to fund these roads due to its small rate base and extensive road network.
