Planting for the Future

The Gresford Arboretum got off to a good start on Sunday 30 October, officially Grandparents Day in NSW. Many families turned out to help plant a showcase of our local vegetation at the Therese Doyle Hall. It is hoped that this will be an Arboretum for all to enjoy, providing habitat for native birds and animals, and to inspire local gardeners to plant these local species on their properties. – Story and pics inside...

Gresford District Community Dinner

Gresford Bowls Sport & Recreation Club Friday 11 November at 6pm Bookings 4938 9166 Last month’s dinner proved a great success with over 40 people enjoying good company and great food. We encourage more people to book so the caterers can set up group seating in advance and hire extra staff.

There is an enclosed children's play area to cater for little ones and the larger space meant people could move around and the noise level was better for we older folk.

Thank you all for such a fun evening and to Christopher Wokes who put his hand up to be the treasurer of the GDCG as Peter Smith has done his five years.

We know Chris will be as proficient as Peter and with Sarah Sivyer as the new secretary, we have a great committee.

Look forward to the next dinner. Don’t forget to ask another person to join us.

Remembrance Day, Armistice Day Friday 11 November

This year the Gresford Sub Branch of the RSL will be conducting their Remembrance Day service on Friday 11th November at 10:30am at the Cenotaph in front of the School of Arts.

Everyone is cordially invited to attend and be part of the service of remembrance of the sacrifices our Forces made during WW1. Members of the public are invited to lay a wreath if they wish to do so.

The students of the Gresford Public School will be attending the service and will again take an active role as in previous years. Martin Addison of the GCG will be giving the Address on the life of General Sir John Monash an outstanding senior soldier of WW1. At the conclusion of the service everyone is invited to enjoy morning tea provided by the Ladies Auxilliary & the GCG.

RSL Xmas Party The RSL will be holding their Xmas Party this year on Friday 25th November at the Bowling Club beginning at 7:00pm. All members of the public are invited to attend at a cost of $30 per head. Our guest speaker this year will be Courtney Lawrence, who will be providing an insight into her trip to the battlefields of Europe as part of her visit during the Centenary of Anzac tour which Courtney enjoyed last year. An extensive arrangement of slides from the tour will form part of the presentation.

We will be conducting a raffle and other entertainment as part of our Xmas celebrations so come along and support our night.

What a great experience it was to be involved in the Gresford Photographic exhibition. On the Thursday prior to opening night we hosted groups for morning tea in the CWA Rooms, they then went on to visit the exhibition and other attractions around Gresford. The historical Society opened it doors and people were taken back to the past. Groups included the Rutherford Telarah Probus Club, Healthy Living for Seniors, Singleton who arrived in their purple bus and a group of artists from Dungog.

On opening night we were able to contribute to the catering.

The photographic exhibition has now moved to Emma’s Cottage vineyard and works will be on display and for purchase for the next few months.

Planting out the Gresford Arboretum

Little did the Gresford Community Group appreciate how many local people would support an Arboretum, a local botanic garden of local trees and plant species.

What started out as a Gresford Community Group discussion about planting more deciduous trees has turned into a successful environmental story for the Gresford area. Looking at this lot you would think some of them had been planting trees – Julia and Chris Wokes, Janie Chandler, Liz Jones and Penny Kater

to develop the Arboretum of trees, plants and shrubs, (especially those becoming rarer or at risk of being lost altogether) in a place where everyone could come and admire and appreciate the diverse horticultural history of our region.

Penny says the area around the Therese Doyle Hall is a perfect location for the Arboretum as this area is becoming a historical precinct, not only with the Gresford and District Historical Society housing all their artefacts in the Therese

Doyle Hall but now with the addition of the Arboretum showcasing our local plants.

Leon Groves from Groves of Gardening approved the design of the Arboretum and Noel Jupp at Riverdene Nurseries has contributed his invaluable knowledge in selecting and providing appropriate trees and shrubs. Noel has also donated plants including two advanced Callitris macleayana, a prized and now rare local cypress pine which is listed on the Threatened Species list.

will be cataloguing all photos of the day to view in the years to come.

Annual Cattle Drive

A perfect day to favour the riders and cattle, a slight breeze and the sun shining.

23 of the district’s best were rearing to go on the 17km ride from Trevallyn to Josh and Penny Evan’s picturesque property at Vacy in preparation for their annual cutting competition.

Former English first grade soccer player from Lancashire, Jordan Wilson, new to the saddle in Australia held his own in very formidable company. Becoming a drover is now off his bucket list.

Mine host Darren Jones and Susan Doyle carried out the task of back up drivers, opening and closing the gates, providing the sustenance for the riders and ensuring all went according to plan.

Lucy Barnes, riding shotgun in Susan’s vehicle, experienced something she had

never dreamed of when she came to Australia from Morpeth, England.

Last but certainly not least are the two budding and outstanding stockmen, Charlotte Parker and Will Parker. If you wish to see confidence in the making then check out these two young Australians. Without any help, other than encouragement, these two horsemen set the pace riding with positiveness, displaying panache and to cap it off, together with their mum

Getting to know the locals... by Noel Jupp OAM, Dip Hort, QP Dept Ag & Fisheries SENNA ACCLINIS This species does not have a widely used common name but some are now calling it the Brush Senna. The word acclinis comes from the Latin and means leaning, sloping, resting or inclined.

This species grows on the margins or rainforests and is reported to be under threat due to the clearing of rainforest areas, however I think that the situation is not quite that simple – a few years after the road was built between Bingleburra and Dungog, these shrubs were highly conspicuous from the road.

I bought some home before I realised what it was and it self-seeded itself so much that it almost reached weed status.

Meanwhile on the roadsides around Mt Richardson, the Senna acclinis has almost vanished but it is still there in less conspicuous areas. It is still common at Monkerai and in the Trevor Tops State Forest area. These areas are fairly open forest and at present there is not a great deal of thick undergrowth. It is also present in some areas around Wyong and it often presents a problem for bush regenerators due to its similarity to the introduced species. Senna acclinis occurs from South Eastern QLD through to the

NSW Central Coast. When I initially began to establish a rainforets area on the old farm flats behind the nursery, I planted both Senna odorata and Senna acclinis along either side of the access road. They are interplanted with predominantly Eucalyptus microcorys.

For the first two years, both varieties were badly burnt by the frost but now as the Tallowoods get taller and broader, they are surviving much better.

  

PAGG Gardening Notes for Spring Dear Garden Lovers, This morning I almost opened my gauze door to wander outside but looked down just in time to see a red bellied black snake trying to get into the house. I turned to my one year old Kelpie and said to her “is it after you or me”?

We chatted about snakes at our last PAGG meeting as it is apparently a huge season for them. They had a poor mating season last spring and will be more aggressive than usual this season.

Our safety officer Robert Smith reminds us every year just to make a loud noise, keep still and the snake will slither away.

would have thought that we would see ourselves on a mining site. We were the guests of the operators of Bloomfield Collieries on the edge of East Maitland and what a thrill that was. Their rejuvenation program is second to none and it was wonderful to witness the great environmental work that a mine on our doorstep is achieving.

Sadly it is fruit fly season again and the Queensland male is already buzzing around our citrus and vegetable patches.

We May Be Older Than We Think!

Charles Boydell along with George Townshend and Alexander Park have the distinction of being the principal pioneers of Gresford. All three embarked for Australia in 1825 on the same ship, the “Prince Regent” and all three were the recipients of original land grants in 1826 over the area that would become known as Gresford.

The souvenir booklet they prepared did refer to the original grants made to Townshend, Boydell and Park but curiously gave no dates for these or indeed any indication why they had chosen November 1829 as the basis for the centenary celebrations. The event was covered most thoroughly in the Dungog Chronicle of 8th November 1929 and we know that they had planned to have the celebrations on October 12th but this had to be postponed on account of an election.

So why did they chose 1829 rather than 1826 as the founding date? We just don’t know, but there are some credible possibilities. The first is that they simply did not have the computer based ability we have at present to search for these historical records and recover the dates. Today we are fortunate in having access to the painstaking research done

by Jack Sullivan, the Newcastle historian on this matter.

The second possibility is that they may have seen some significance in 17th November 1829 as the date on which Charles Boydell received his 2nd grant of 640 acres to the North of Gresford on land we now know as “The Falls”. At this

Boydell however did not come to live at Camyr Allyn until 18th March 1830 and from 1826 his grants had been overseen on his behalf by Townshend. Any significance given to Boydell’s 2nd grant of November 1829 rather overlooks the fact that the land of Gresford (West) was granted to Townshend on October 20th 1826 and the land of Gresford (East) was granted to Boydell on October 13th 1826.

Another viewpoint is that Gresford was considered “founded” only when a Church or some other public building had been constructed. Again the dates don’t support this view and this is not the criteria used to recognise Australia’s founding date. As it happened, the first St Anne’s was constructed around 1856 on land conveyed to the Church by George Townshend

in 1841. Arrangements were however made for the bishop (Broughton) to lay the foundation stone for a Church in 1843 when he visited the area, but Townshend’s insolvency raised issues about the security of the title and the foundation stone had to wait till the 2nd (present) church was built and consecrated in 1898.

In my view the most reasonable explanation is the simplest. I suspect 1926 passed the organizers by before it was appreciated that this was the centenary year and then a late birthday party in 1929 was surely better than none. This may also explain why the date of the first grants is omitted from the souvenir booklet.

Australia has also missed a few birthdays as we did not celebrate the anniversary of our founding date again until some 3 years after the 26th February 1788, and indeed Australia Day itself did not become publically

Unless we can find other compelling evidence to support a founding date of 1829, and that seems unlikely, Gresford’s actual bi-centenary will be upon us sooner than we think.
