Transportation Situation
Increasing Population in Parking Lot, Buses Cause Problems BROOKLYNN NIELSEN Staff Reporter
Where Do You Park at School and Why? “I park at North Park because it is easy to get out of although it is a longer walk from the school.”
Jenna Vandertuig (23) “I park in the new parking lot because my friends park there and after school it is easy to get out of.”
Kate Jarzynka (23) “In the back, I feel like it is a lot safer of a parking space and it is not as far of a walk.”
Gavin Lane (23) “At North Park because there is not as many cars and easier to get out of.”

sk ten students how they will get to school and chances are they will have ten different modes of transportation. Some students ride the bus, others drive cars and some even walk. Transportation is very important in Gretna considering some students live further away, whether that be on farms far from the city, or the outskirts of Omaha. Last year’s construction project added many more parking spots to the high school. With the growing population, both buses and the parking lot at the high school are overflowing, leaving students with little room. A longtime employee of the district Mr. Travis Lightle took over as transportation chief in 2018. Every day he works with the staff and bus drivers and listens to the bus radios as they broadcast the story of a busy department each day. “We have 19 daily routes with 20 drivers and one route is split morning and afternoon,” Mr Lightle said. “We have a total of eight others that can sub if needed. One of those subs is superintendent Dr. [Rich] Beran, we always struggle for bus drivers. The reason is if a regular driver is out, then a sub driver has to take over that route.” The average bus capacity is about seventy-two people per bus. Approximately 2,300 students depend on district transportation. “We go into a neighborhood and we pick up a large number of students at one or two or sometimes three and sometimes four stops,” Mr. Lightle said. “If there’s an enormous amount of kids we go in the neighborhood and get them on the bus and then get them off. We put a lot of kids on a bus for a short amount of time. If you were to have fewer kids you would need more bus drivers which would be very difficult. It would cost more money and more fuel and other costs and the routes would also be longer,” The other two-thirds of the district’s students find other ways to arrive at school. High schoolers are the age where they are able to drive to school. There are four main parking lots where students may park. Seniors, Juniors and Sophomore students are allowed to park on campus. The parking lots at the school may experience some problems. Ninth graders park in the Methodist parking lot, and there are more parking spots at North Park. There are different places were students
Trouble In The Afternoon: Students pull up in the front to try to get out of the parking lot after school. Every day the line is backed up because students from the front and back lots are all leaving from the same exit. There are only about three exits from the main parking lot and with a large number of high school students driving. (photo by Brooklynn Nielsen)
prefer parking in different lots. “I like parking in the back because the front is really crowded,” junior Brooke Behrens said. “I work at Kid’s Connection so I have to get out and when in the front it crowds up very easily and in the back it’s way less stressful.” Some students think it’s simpler to get out of the back lot after school. Students park in the back lot because of band or show choir but because of how easy it is to get out of. While some students prefer to park in the back parking lot, others choose to park in the front lot. “I park in the front parking lot by my friend and by a bunch of seniors,” junior Sophie English said. “I think they need to get another way out of the school because it is so annoying because in the front sometimes it could take up to thirty or more minutes to get out if you don’t leave instantly.” The overcrowding may cause the lines after school long and make it difficult to get out of the parking lots. What students worry about is not arriving at school on time causes them to worry about not finding an open parking spot. “There is a lot of overcrowding, I like to go early to get a good parking spot,” Behrens said. “I wish they had more room because I feel like if you get there at a certain time then there’s like no parking spots left.” Gretna has grown exponentially over the years. As a result there has been
overcrowding in parking lots and on buses. Considering how far away some students live from the school transportation is very important, and the aforementioned overcrowding is a problem students have to deal with everyday.
After School Transportation: Transportation is different depending on how far a student lives from the school. In high school, students have a few different options of how they arrive to the building. Students who drive to school have different lots where they can park. With the schools large population, the students rush out to their cars after school so they can leave the parking lot faster and easier. (photo by Brooklynn Nielsen) North Park Parking: Instead of parking on school grounds some students choose to park near the North Park baseball field. A few downsides to parking at North Park is it’s a farther walk to and from the school and you have to back out straight onto the street. One plus in some people’s opinions is that parking at North Park is easier and faster to get out of after school. (photo by Brooklynn Nielsen)

Discipline Dilemmas Societal Changes
F I G H T S According to “Public School Review,” public schools across the country are reporting more severe punishments for school fights. “Back then discipling was maybe different because you knew everybody,” Mr. Mueller said. “So yes there are more fights and more issues now and we use the discipline rules now because there are more fights.” (art by Grace Pemberton)

According to “FindLaw,” schools find it difficult to enforce strict dress codes without taking away students’ right of self-expression. During homecoming week, however, students were able to break dress code by wearing hats. “They are a problem,” Mr. Mueller said. “For instance, the day we allowed hats, we dealt with people stealing them, throwing them, knocking them off people’s heads and wearing them down over their eyes in class and that was just one day.” (pictured: Skylar Wintle and Adeline Fliege)(photos by Allison McGee)
phone usage
(ar Pemt by G ber race ton (22 ))
According to “Oxford Learning,” students spend up to 20% of their in-class time texting, emailing or checking social media. This causes students to become distracted leading to extra stress, frustration and some catch-up time from not doing their assignments in class. “The problem was with technology,” Ms. Weber said. “With that comes social media and cyberbullying and kids spreading Snapchats about each other which is a whole other problem that we didn’t have to worry about 10 years ago.

Long’ Career A ‘Long Teacher Inspires Next Generation Why Did You Decide To Come Back To GHS? “One day I was driving to class and I realized that the stuff I was doing at the high school as a graduate was what was making me happiest. I realized that the people I looked up to at that time in my life were my teachers. They were the ones that inspired me and made me feel like I could do anything.”
Ms. Grace Kimnach (15) “I came back because of the teachers that work here. All of the former teachers that I had when I was student are the reason I decided to come back. Also the admin here are so awesome so I really wanted to work for them.”
Ms. Brooke Berube (16)
“I came back because my mom (Mrs. Ann Ross) is a teacher in the ACC room. I studied interior design and then realized that my passion was working with students and that this was a really great opportunity to work with the people that I love.”
Mrs. MaryEllen [Kramer] West (15)

Fine Arts Fever: With three years under her belt, Mrs. Long excelled during her senior year, earning four fine arts awards. “I won in entertainment writing for a review of “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” which to this day, I have not seen,” Mrs. Long said. “I didn’t watch it then, and I have not yet watched it. But I wrote a review of it, and I won.” This plaque was awarded to her and is now among many others on the stage in the commons. (photo by Ava Fuller)
Student Surge: This school year, Mrs. Long has an average of 25-27 students in each of her classes. “I can’t think of a town that has seen the kind of growth in the amount of time that Gretna has,” Mrs. Long said. “Everything is different, but I think we’ve weathered it really well.” During her first year of teaching in 2005, she had only 20-22 students in each class. One Act
Over the Years
Post-Competition Poses: After coming back from their tournament, the speech team sits with their trophy in hand. “I was unmeasureably happy, I finally felt my speech coming together and it was paying off, meaning I was winning tournaments,” Chuck Sams said. The team was all smiles to have won, though they had no idea that it would be the last competition before the school shut down due to COVID-19. (submitted photo)
