Local families relish life in Red Deer BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express For several local families, Red Deer has been the ideal place to raise their children and enjoy a long list of benefits of a midsized community. Gail and Gord Smith moved to the City back in 1990. And from the start, they were impressed with what Red Deer had to offer. As they started raising their family (son Jordy, 17 and daughter Caci, 14), the range of services proved that much more extensive. “We’ve put them in everything from fencing, soccer and golf to baseball, diving, dance and karate,” explains Gail during a talk in the family’s comfortable Lonsdale home. “There is so much - the community programs are just awesome.”

‘I FEEL LIKE EVERYTHING WE NEED AND WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS HERE. I FEEL LIKE NOTHING IS MISSING.’ SHEILA STONE “If you want to pursue a sport and go all the way with it, there are so many opportunities to do so.” Gail said that over the years, artistic learning opportunities have really grown as well, via Red Deer College and programs offered by the City of Red Deer. Having said that, Gail, 43, points out that Red Deer needs a new concert/arts venue. “The Centrium is too big, and then you have the Memorial Centre which is often too small,” she said. The Arts Centre at RDC serves as its first priority student programs and related events, so at the end of the day finding a suitably sized venue for certain events is a challenge. On the positive side, Red Deer’s arts scene has surged ahead in recent years with

the addition of several art galleries, the establishment of The Matchbox Theatre, the Scott Block Theatre downtown and a string of comparatively major acts including Red Deer on their Canadian tours. The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra continues to grow in popularity, which again brings up the need for a new and larger concert venue for the growing list of patrons. Another plus to the community is the well-connected parks system that many Red Deerians continually point to as a tremendous advantage. “You can be close to downtown and still be in the middle of trees, bike paths and nice park areas,” said Jordy, who is in his final year at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School. Gail adds the family particularly made use of the trail system when the kids were younger. “We were out biking all the time. I also have enjoyed doing hikes around Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Bower Ponds and Heritage Ranch. Again, it’s like you are in the country even though you are still in the City.” Gord, 45, also adds that the family have been regulars at the nearby Collicutt Centre. He’s also pleased with the growing educational opportunities in Red Deer, particularly with the recent expansions at Red Deer College. “It’s good for our kids’ future,” he said. Shawn and Sheila Stone have lived in their Vanier Woods neighbourhood for several years now. Both have called Central Alberta home for most of their lives and think of Red Deer as being the ideal size for raising their daughter Avery, two, and six-year-old son Sam. Like the Smiths, the Stones emphasize the traits that many think of when they ponder Red Deer’s finer attributes, notably the expansive trail system. “We love the outdoor kinds of things,” says Sheila, 41, adding her fami-

ly regularly takes advantage of places like Heritage Ranch, Bower Ponds and McKenzie Trails. “There are lots of parks, and plenty of recreational things you can get involved with.” Ultimately, the family doesn’t feel a pressing need to venture to Calgary or Edmonton for more in the way of things to do. The family also makes regular use of the nearby Collicutt Centre. “I feel like everything we

need and what we want to do is here. I feel like nothing is missing.” Tracey and Duane Trytten and their daughter Emma have a tough time finding fault with Red Deer’s many features as well. “I love Red Deer, and I couldn’t imagine my family living anywhere else,” says Duane. Tracey, 36, agrees. The family takes advantage of everything from the neighbourhood parks to the bigger recreational areas

such as Bower Ponds to annual events that attract thousands, such as Westerner Days and occasionally Red Deer’s hugely popular downtown street festival CentreFest. Another family favourite is the Canada Day celebrations at Bower Ponds. Duane, 36, would like to see more focus on the needs of the homeless in Red Deer, although he’s quick to praise what the City has done to alleviate the prob-

lem. They also homeschool Emma, and point out that it’s easy to keep her busy with extra-curricular activities as well. As Tracey points out, Red Deer strikes the perfect balance between having the qualities of both an urban and a smaller community setting. “We feel safe here, and it’s just big enough to have all the amenities that we need.”

A beloved Haitian in a Red Deer family Despite bureaucratic challenges there are no adoption regrets for local family BY ALF CRYDERMAN Red Deer Express Since the earthquake disaster in Haiti there are many stories about families trying to adopt a child from that country. There is a greater need than ever, but as one Red Deer family can vouch, adopting a child from Haiti isn’t easy, but it was the most rewarding thing they’ve ever done. Terry Villeneuve and her husband Randy always wanted to adopt. She says, “Years ago we tried to adopt a child from Korea, but it didn’t work out and that’s when we heard it was possible to adopt a child from Haiti. So we went to a workshop in Calgary and started the paperwork. “It turns out you can, but it is really difficult to adopt in Haiti and it took us three years,” says Villeneuve. “The paperwork is endless, there are home studies and many assessments, and they examine every aspect of your lives. “But we were finally told we had a child. At one point it looked as if my husband or I would have to fly to Haiti but, as it turned out, we just had to go to Montreal to pick her up.” That was five years ago. Abby, their daughter from Haiti, is now seven. A bright-eyed, happy, healthy and friendly girl in Grade 2, she is the youngest of the Villeneuve family. The other children in the family are Derek, away at university; Rachel, 15 and Nick, 13. When they first met Abby at the airport she was 19-months-old and weighed 16 lbs. Even at that age she would hoard food and something as everyday bathing in a bathtub was a new experience. Abby, not surprisingly, doesn’t remember anything about Haiti. She thinks of Canada as home and is part of an extended, loving family. Like any Canadian child she plays soccer, attends dance

But Villeneuve is aware and concerned that Abby will lose some of her Haitian identity growing up here. “We’d like to take her back there sometime. She has two siblings still there and maybe we can find them.” Villeneuve says adopting Abby was meant to be. “We have no regrets. The first few weeks everybody had to adapt and I remember the first night at home

all the kids were crying. It wasn’t easy, but before long everything was normal again. The neighbours came over to welcome her and all our relatives opened their hearts to this wonderful new addition to our family. “We had no say in how we were matched up with a child, the agency does the matching, but as it turned out, we couldn’t have got a better match,” says Villeneuve. “We always wanted to adopt and would do it again if it wasn’t a mat-

ter of money and age. The earthquake has made things so much worse in Haiti. So many families are torn apart by the earthquake and the need is still so great. There are many children in need of adoption, but it is still difficult and there is certainly resistance in Haiti. Despite that I would still urge people to adopt because children desperately need homes.” When the earthquake in Haiti happened Villeneuve, a nurse, helped organize a silent auction

and challenged other units at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre to raise money too. Together they raised $7,400 in two days and donated it to the Red Cross. Parental joys of cooking with children BY MARINA COLDWELL Red Deer Express Cooking with your kids allows you as a parent to teach your children many things and to hear about their daily experiences. It’s also a time to connect as a family and families need to work together in the kitchen. When cooking is one parent’s job shortcuts are done and eating out becomes an easier expensive option. It’s so important to our health and the health of our children that we all start cooking together. Start with making a pitcher of lemonade or ice tea and pour everyone a glass and let the cooking begin! I have chosen two vegetable snacks that are easy and inexpensive for you and your kids to make. Most kids don’t like to eat their vegetables so when we include them in the preparation they will look forward to eating their creations. Every time you include your children with cooking you are allowing them to take an active role in selecting healthy snacks to eat and teaching them at a young age good nutrition. As a parent it’s so important that we show our kids snacks don’t need to be from a bag or a box. These types of snacks are expensive and loaded with salt, sugar and fat. Let each child have a job depending on their age and ability. Phyllo Pastry Asparagus Wraps 1 package of frozen Phyllo pastry, thawed 1 bunch of asparagus, cut an inch off the ends

EASY BAKE - Marina Coldwell places a tray of seasoned cauliflower into the oven with Mason, 7, Michael, 4, and Madison, 12 in their Lancaster home. Brendan Miller/Red Deer Express

1/2 cup of shredded Parmesan 1/4 cup of butter or margarine Cut the pastry in half so you have a square. Place 3 asparagus sticks on the square , add a dab of butter/margarine and a couple pinches of Parmesan cheese. Roll them up and place on a baking sheet. Bake @ 350 for 20 - 25 minutes. Serve with Ranch dressing for dipping. Broiled Cauliflower 1 cauliflower, washed and cut into bite size pieces

1/2 olive oil Place the cauliflower on a baking sheet Sprinkle your family’s favourite seasonings over the cauliflower. I use Mrs. Dash original/fresh ground pepper/ herb and garlic mix Pour some of the olive oil over and broil. Watch carefully so it does not burn. Toss and add more olive oil as needed. It usually takes 10 - 15 minutes. Serve with Ranch dressing for dipping.

While preparing these dishes we had a wonderful time at the house of Angie and Rob Bruce. (Angie is my first cousin). Their three kids, Michael, Madison and Mason, all had fun and each one was so helpful. They all asked what is phyllo pastry and of course asked to try some as we cooked. Michael, 4, counted the asparagus into threes. His sister Madison, 12, wrapped them up. Michael’s seven-year-old brother Mason separated the cauliflower

and they added the seasonings before we grilled them. Each of the kids munched while we prepared the snacks. We had to sweep the floor! Thank you, Rob and Angie for the use of your kitchen and a big thanks to Madison, Mason and Michael, my cooking friends. I hope you and your kids enjoy these recipes and the time with each other creating and developing delicious foods and memories. hydenseekproject.com

BY ALF CRYDERMAN Red Deer Express There’s really only one place you need to look if you are looking for parenting resources in Red Deer and area and that’s Family Services of Central Alberta. If you are looking for advice about your pregnancy, or problems with your teenager or your aging parent, Family Services can provide that advice and a whole lot more. But if they can’t, they’ll tell you that too and point you in the right direction for help. Valdene Callin, the organization’s marketing and Parent Link manager, says, “We cover the entire gamut, from pregnancy to death. We have voluntary programs for just about everyone and try to meet parents’ needs. For example, our Common Sense Parenting program allows parents to meet and learn more about parenting from our experts once a week, while we take care of the kids. Parents learn that they aren’t alone, that they aren’t the only ones in this situation and we can help them solve their parenting problems.”

Callin herself took part in the Family Life Education program when she first came to Red Deer and had a young child. “It helped me make friends in a new city, and made me feel I was doing a good job as a mom. We’re especially helpful to people with young children without support from an extended family and we became a place to go. We know children learn quickly in the early years by modelling their parents or whoever is around them most. Too often kids are plunked in front of the TV. We teach that you have to get down on the floor and play with them.” There are is a wide variety of programs and they can fill up fast. Healthy Families is a free home visitation program to support new parents. The Infant Preschool Wellness Program provides information and support to families with children up to six. The Building Beautiful Babies offers outreach and support for at risk pregnant women. The Growing Together Project provides developmental check-ups for children 18-26 monthsold in Olds and Rocky

Mountain House as well as Red Deer. There’s even a course for divorcing parents with children under 16. Counselling is available for individuals, couples and families. With a staff of 86 and a $3 million budget Family Services is a non-profit that provides preventative, supportive and early intervention parenting services.

It partners with 33 different agencies and groups. It proudly claims that it is there to help everyone. Started in 1971 it will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year. It also provides programs and counselling in Innisfail, Lacombe, Olds, Sundre, Rocky Mountain House, Rimbey and Sylvan Lake. Every June it helps

organize the Central Alberta Children’s Festival. Last year more than 6,000 people showed up. It has its own web site at www.centralalbertachildrensfestival.ca. You can find other parenting resources and activities in many places, including the Red Deer Public Library and the Collicut Centre. But for an

exhaustive list of resources drop into Family Services at 5409 – 50 Ave., phone 403343-6400 or go to their web site at www.fsca.ca Under programs you will find a guide to their Parent Directory, dated 2008, but updated, for a complete guide to parenting resources in Red Deer and Central Alberta. news@reddeer.greatwest.ca

Struggle between quality time and technology Experts say family success depends on being proactive rather than reactive BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express With technology becoming more common in households, many families may struggle to find a balance between spending quality time together and allowing technology into their lives. Local family psychologists say they have seen a change in family dynamics due to the increase in use of technology. Sharon Comstock, a local registered psychologist, said these days she believes not enough quality time is spent in families. “All the technology is a sign of disconnect,” she said. Comstock added parents need to develop boundaries with their children regarding technology such as computers, televisions, video games, iPods and cell phones from the very beginning. “In my home, my daughter is in her early twenties and her son is three, I have laid down some really firm ground rules about how much television he is exposed to and I’ve really tried to minimize that so he doesn’t form a primary attachment to technolo-

gy,” said Comstock. “His attachment is still more with us.” She added using technology in a positive way will help families stay better connected. “It doesn’t work best if you say ‘well if you don’t do this, I’m going to take this away’ but rather ‘if you do this, than you get to have this,’” said Comstock. “That way the use of technology is a reward for other behaviour.” Wanda Cassidy, a local registered psychologist, said technology is only an issue if it is interfering with a person’s social life, family life, employment or school work. “It depends on the family,” said Cassidy. “Parents have been telling me it is becoming more common. It’s easier to access now and it’s the ‘in’ thing.” Cassidy said some students may be less focused on schoolwork. “I sometimes see college students’ texting in the middle of a class,” she said. “So I think it’s gotten to be quite common.” Cassidy added if families are struggling with this issue she also suggested limiting time with or negotiating time with technology. And better results will be seen by being

proactive rather than reactive. “If you negotiate the time with the kids ahead of time, depending on the age, than they can have a little bit of a say in terms of how long they get to spend on these devices,” she said. “That’s how a lot of families are dealing with it.” Cassidy said it’s important for parents to get to know the technology their children are using. “Not only for safety reasons, but so that they can understand what the interest is and so they’re not caught unaware,” she said. “Even if parents were to play the video games with their kids that way they can be part of their world instead of being talked down to.” Cassidy added if parents completely restrict technology out of their home, children will find a way to use it. “They have friends that have the technology so there is only a certain amount that you can control as parents,” she said. “A lot of it has to do with trusting that you have done a good job or that the kids can come to you if something does come up that is a problem.” efawcett@reddeer.greatwest.ca (403-309-5457)

FINDING BALANCE - Sharon Comstock, a local registered psychologist, is seen sitting on the steps in the Old Court House Brendan Miller/Red Deer Express downtown.

Ten coping tips for families facing fragile financial times Normal parents want to make sure that their children don’t go without the necessities of life. However, many normal parents also feel guilty when they can’t give their children what the neighbours’ kids have.

Sara Dimerman For some this may mean the latest in the line of technological gadgets or gizmos. For others, it may mean not having a swimming pool. Whatever the luxury, during these tougher economic times, many parents are having to re-evaluate their spending

habits, having to conserve and trying to find ways to ease their children into being happy with what they do have rather than focusing on what they don’t have. For many children, distinguishing between a want and a need is difficult. Unfortunately, many normal parents have established a precedent in regards to having their children expect the same as their friends, if not bigger and better. So what should parents do if they are struggling to make ends meet but want to ease their guilt about not always having the money to give their children what they want? 1. Take this opportunity to reflect and re-evaluate your spending habits. A crisis can also create an opportunity for change and an opportunity to gradually teach your children about the value of money by modeling wise spending and careful budgeting. 2. Keep in mind that children are easily frightened by sudden changes and can quickly jump to the worst

conclusions. A young child, for example, may worry about not having a house to live in if they hear you talk about not being able to throw them the usual birthday bash. The key is to cut back gradually and to not make an issue over not being able to afford something. Instead of having to talk about what you can no longer afford, consider how else you can spend your money more wisely. Instead of the $350 that you usually spend on a party venue and loot bags, plan a party at home with back to basic party games. 3. Help your child understand the difference between a need and a want. Do this at a quiet time when he or she will be more likely to listen rather than when you are in the toy store and run the risk of your child feeling as if he or she is being lectured at. 4. Help older children understand the value of money by having them contribute part of their

allowance or wages from part-time employment to items that are not necessities. 5. Watch how you model buying habits. If we buy on impulse, then it may be difficult for you to help your children step away from what they want to reflect and wait a couple of weeks to see if it is still at the top of their have to have list. 6. Best not to say “we can’t afford this anymore.” Children will again jump to terrifying conclusions about what will happen next. Instead, think of creative ways to tell them what they need to know and to help them learn about wise spending. You may rather say something like “I’ve been thinking that since you already have so many games and toys at home, that buying more is just adding to the clutter.” 7. If your child insists that the item is really important to him or her, try saying something like “I know that you really want it. I know what that feels like. Unfortunately buying

that toy wasn’t on my shopping list for the week. How about you think about it and if you really want it as badly in a couple of weeks, we’ll think of a way to make it happen.” Then, at that time think of a way to teach how to spend wisely - maybe do some research on the internet or through flyers to see where to get the item at the most reasonable cost, plan on how to save the money to get it. 8. Without alarming your children, gradually ease into including them in some simple budgeting for the household. First decide as an adult or as adults what you feel comfortable allocating each week towards your household expenses and then when you’re hanging out as a family, have that amount of money prepared from your monopoly set, real money or even create your own. Present this as an exciting activity - your children won’t even realize that they are improving their math skills! Lay all the pretend

bills out of the table and then say, “how much do you think we spend on groceries during the week?” By showing your children how to budget and allocate, they may be more sensitive to not spending frivolously and you are teaching them an essential life skill. 9. Always try to have some money left over for a slush fund - treat yourselves to something fun at the end of the month - especially if you’ve been careful all month long. 10. Try to remain optimistic, even during tough times. Even if you can’t afford something right now, talk about how you make it happen as a family. Ask “how can we work together to make this happen? Whatever your child’s interest, you can find a summer camp for it. From horseback riding to chess, from canoeing to computers, camps only for boys or girls, there’s a summer camp for your child. There are camps located in Red Deer, on Sylvan or Buffalo Lake or in the foothills around Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg. Kathryn Rambow, executive director of the Alberta Camping Association in Edmonton, says, “Parents need to talk with their children about what kind of camp they want to go to. I also recommend camps that are accredited because then you know they meet required standards and that the camp organizers also have opportunities for professional development. Many summer camps are connected to a church or religion, but there is a lot of variation in how much religion is actually part of the camp experience. You certainly don’t need to be religious to go to camp but this is something parents should check out.” When it comes to the cost of summer camps says Rambow, “Expect to pay between $200 to $700 a week for most camps. There is a lot of variation in what you get for your money. And some camps can cost a lot more so it’s important to find out what is offered and what is included. “What every parent needs to do, after deciding what kind of camp their child is interested in, is contact the offices of one or more suitable camps to find out about sessions, start dates, availability and costs. “Ideally you should speak to the camp director or senior staff and ask them about things like the ratio of campers to staff; the age of counsellors and leaders; facilities for campers with special needs and expectations of what parents need to do,” says Rambow. “They should send you brochures, program outlines and application forms, which should tell you about registration and cancellation policies. Hopefully they will also provide references for you to follow up on,” she adds. “If you have any major outstanding concerns you could also arrange for a tour. “Once you register,” says Rambow, “You should receive some kind of welcome or confirmation package, which will include the all important lists of clothing and any other equipment necessary.” Choosing a camp can be difficult because of all the choice but a good place to start is the Alberta Camping Association website at www.albertacamping.com or call 780-427-6605. On the site there is a section that provides solid information for parents to consider when choosing a camp. Information about individual camps can also be easily found on the internet. Is your child ready for camp? BY CHRISTINA KELLEY Red Deer Express

Summer Fun Experience A weekly camp for children 3 - 4 years of age.

Do you remember singing camp songs and roasting marshmallows over a campfire? Have you ever whispered all of your secrets to your BFF after your camp counselor told you it was lights out? Or were you the child that spent hours searching along paths for the perfect addition to your bug collection? Summer camp is often one of the best experiences a child can have, and the memories created there can easily last a lifetime, but how do you know if your own child is ready to embark on this journey? You may want to consider the following questions before making that decision: Has your child spent a night away from home before? If so, how did he/she deal with being separated from you? Is your child comfortable in unfamiliar settings? Do they react well to new environments and new foods? When asked about Summer Camp does your child express an active interest, or does he/she shy away from the discussion? Can your child perform basic tasks in hygiene without any parental assistance? For example: Does your child know how to put on his/her own clothes. Does he/she need help brushing his/her teeth? Does your child have any difficulty interacting in a group of his/her own peers? Does he/she make new friends

easily or does he/she prefer to play alone? Does your child have difficulty obeying figures of authority? Is he/she capable of voicing any concerns that may arise to adults other than immediate family members? The answers to these questions

Kindergarten Here I Come

should give you an understanding of whether or not your child is ready for their stay away from home. However, if you are still faced with concern or doubt, contact the Summer Camp you are considering to discuss your child’s needs with an experienced professional camp counselor.

2010 SUMMER CAMP

GUIDE

SUMMER SCHOOL AT CHINOOK’S EDGE Chinook’s Edge School Division offers summer schools in three communities, making it convenient for students to take courses for credit. Summer school is available in Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, and Olds. High School students, or those entering grade 10 in September 2010, are able to take courses to upgrade existing marks, complete a required course missing from their timetable, or for personal reasons. All core high school courses are offered and there is no charge for students currently in Chinook’s Edge. Students work at their own pace, but under the guidance and supervision of teachers who provide assistance when needed. Taking a summer course provides students the opportunity to upgrade their marks in a course they didn’t do well in, or it can help reduce their course load in September. Summer School runs Monday to Friday, July 2 – 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Begin next school year ahead of the game - call 1-800-561-9229 or visit www.chinooksedge.ab.ca for more information.

ACCA CO-OPERATIVE YOUTH PROGRAM Summer camp is a time for making new friends and is the place where youth discover their hidden talents. Those who have attended the ACCA Co-operative Youth Program, who celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2009, will tell you that it was one of their most memorable and life-changing experiences. ACCA holds its annual youth program at Goldeye Centre near Nordegg, AB. The serene foothills location provides a beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains. The program aims to develop leadership skills and self confidence in youth so they can return to their communities and get involved. Every summer, youth learn how to work in committees, elect their own government and learn how to set up and run a co-operative business. They also develop communication skills and expand their knowledge of the agriculture industry and the benefits of membership in co-operatives. To this date those values are what guide the summer camping program as described by our mission statement: “To nurture personal growth and promote respect for nature, others and self through an inclusive, Christian camping experience.” Camp Maskepetoon has 11 heated, natural log cabins, main lodge and 250 acres all set among tall spruce and poplar trees on the Northwest shore of Pigeon Lake. Campers participate in many activities such as archery, canoeing, crafts, sports, devotions, waterfront, campfires, and many surprises! Experiencing a night under the stars at the outback site, making new friends, playing in the mud pit, and making noise around the campfire are just a few of the life long memories gained at Camp Maskepetoon.

Nestled in a secluded valley in the foothills of the Rockies, Bates Bar J Ranch is found at the fork of the Little Red Deer River and the Grease Creek, about 64km northwest of Calgary. Bates Bar J Ranch and children’s camp was founded in 1962 by Jack and Barbara Bates. Randy and Kathy Bates and children Russell and Kristina now run the ranch. Boys and girls participate in real ranch life featuring horseback riding and care of horses. It is not unusual to see Paints and Quarter Horses grazing in the pastures and on the hills. Other activities include hikes, games, survival skills, crafts, dances, campfires, and swimming. A full time cook and kitchen staff serves tasty, home-style meals. Counselor staff ratio is approximately 1 to 5 campers. Our aims are to promote appreciation of the outdoors, wildlife, and animals in general, and develop new skills and friendships while having fun.

KASOTA EAST SPECIAL CAMPS Kasota East Camp offers a great program that helps develop self worth and friendships. Come celebrate the best of the outdoors in a relaxed, non-denominational Christian setting.
