e have some big plans at Greyhound Express, there is a fantastic website being built and we have gone on Twitter and Facebook. The next couple of months promise to be very exciting; all of which should enhance your reading experience of the magazine. What a month for our sport; the racing has certainly had the wow factor and we look back at this fantastic action. The good news is there is more around the corner and we take a look at the sensational upcoming action. One of the most exciting things in our sport is seeing a young greyhound burst on the scene last month we witnessed two outstand-

ing youngsters; Bower Stone and Droopys Dustin, they look to have fantastic futures. TV coverage just seems to be getting better and better; Sky Greyhounds produced by BAGS/SIS and RPGTV produced by Clive Lawrence and his team have taken greyhound racing into the living rooms of thousands. The coverage has been absolutely brilliant and I seriously think every single greyhound racing fan should consider themselves extremely lucky. Whisper it quietly and wear a hard hat but our magnificent sport is emerging out of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest financial crisis and not looking in bad shape. You will get shouted down, maybe

even abused for saying it but I firmly believe it is true. Attendances did not fall during the crisis and in fact showed a slight increase, other leisure industries would be shouting it from the rooftops if they could boast figures of this nature. It just goes to show greyhound racing still has the pulling power and is amazing value for money for a family night out. Spread the message â&#x20AC;&#x201C; go greyhound racing!!! There will be a brilliant entry chasing the magnificent £12,000 first-prize. This race goes all the way back to 1947; we have seen a lot of changes in the world since Magpie Rose crossed the line to become the first winner but one thing that remains constant is this race is right up there with the biggest and best races of the year. Roll of Honour: 2012 Bubbly Phoenix, 2011 Ballymac Ace, 2010 & 2009 Fear Zafonic, 2008 Ninja Jamie, 2007 Blackrose Mars, 2006 Geordie Parker, 2005 Fear No One. When Fear Zafonic crossed the line to land the double he became only the third greyhound in history to do so; he followed in the footsteps of Our Rufus 1978 & 1979 and Happy Harry 1966 &1967. harlie Lister OBE has a fantastic record in this race, the last two year have seen the maestro leave empty handed from his beloved Yarmouth but you cannot help but think he is about to regain the title that means so much to him. Sidaz Jack is a youngster that has already bagged the biggest prize in greyhound racing; 2013 William Hill Derby. It would take a brave punter to back against him adding this to his CV. He possesses brilliant early-

I put the questions to his co-owner Simon Wooder; Is this Sidaz Jack’s main target now? “This is his target for sure, being such a young greyhound we decided to give him a rest after his Derby win, we thought about the Gold Cup at Monmore but being honest he was just not quite ready so we decided to lay him out for Yarmouth.” You have owned some amazing greyhounds and won the East-Anglian Derby three times before how does he compare to those? “Fear Zafonic was a great greyhound but being honest I think Sidaz Jack is the best greyhound I have ever co-owned, he

has it all, brilliant early-pace, stamina and importantly he is a clever greyhound. Zafonic was not quite good enough to win the English Derby, Jack pulled it off and in my opinion this year’s Derby was the best ever.” I heard a rumour years ago you missed Fear No One winning the East Anglian Derby is this true and what happened? “(Simon laughs) There was torrential rain and Fear No One being a sprinter type, I did not think he had a chance being honest. We got to Yarmouth there was some mix up with our table and decided to go down the pub. We got carried away in there and missed it, my phone rang it was Mark Wallis where are you? I am on the podium

We raced back and joined in the celebrations – trust me if we make the final with Jack I won’t be missing it.” Wish you all the best in East Anglian Derby but can’t let you go without asking; You own some fantastic greyhounds including Musical Gaga and Fear Emoski it is going to be exciting for you in the St Leger, which one wins it? “I co-own two of the best three stayers in my opinion you must include Farloe Tango in the equation. They will be guarded (Emoski & Gaga) hopefully Gaga can win the TV Trophy but truthfully I could not say which is the best over six-bends. Hopefully they make the fi-

nal of the St Leger and the best one on the night wins. It will be a great competition and certainly will not be easy you need that bit of luck.” Great to catch up with Simon Wooder who himself and Darren Johnson do so much for greyhound racing especially on the retired front, they are connected with some fantastic greyhounds and look to be in the driving seat for lots of the major races coming up. Sidaz Jack is the one they all have to beat at Yarmouth but Charlie Lister OBE is likely to have Lemon Pluto, Liz McNair Shaneboy Spencer, David Pruhs Fermhoy Henry and a host of other top class stars. Bubbly Phoenix last year’s winner has

been plagued by injuries but I caught up with Paul Young’s assistant Jack Murrell “He is in great condition, he is looking good being honest the thing we are worried about is the four runs in close proximity, but he is very well and we all have our fingers crossed.” It would be great to see last year’s champion back and running well, could he be only the fourth greyhound in history to do the double? Time will tell but I am sure I speak for all greyhound fans wishing the team all the best with Bubbly Phoenix without injuries just how good would he have been? It would be a fairy-tale but sometimes they do come true!!!

That debut compares to anything I have ever seen at Romford or anywhere else for that matter, it is scintillating. Heading into this prestigious competition there is no other kennel in England with two pups of the potential of Bengie and Dustin, they are massive players in this competition

but also when they move away from Romford. I caught up with Jack Murrell (Paul’s assistant) What a position to be in Jack, these looks sensational puppies, can you tell us about them? “They are fantastic youngsters with serious gears, they will head for the Puppy Cup and then we may look to run them around the country, both are so young but full of potential. We are keeping our feet on the floor but I would be telling lies if I said we are not all excited about them. Please God they stay injury free and we can have an amazing couple of years with them starting at Romford in the Puppy Cup.” There will be some top pups head to Romford enticed by the £8,000 first-prize but they will have to be very special to stop Paul Young’s top class youngsters. he North-East is a hot bed for greyhound racing and with sister track Sunderland holding the William Hill Classic it is true to say the North-East is home to some of the most exciting racing on the planet. The main event is The All England Cup but it is very much a festival of racing with some fantastic competitions supporting this great race. This amazing competition is steeped in history dating all the way back to 1938; Ballyjoker was the first greyhound to win the cup. Greyhounds like Mondays News 1946 (winner of Derby), Endless Gossip 1952 (winner of Derby), Slippy Blue 1989 (winner of Derby), New Level 1992 (Scottish Derby winner), are just some of the outstanding previous winners. When you look at recent winners you get the feeling it takes a very special greyhound to lift the cup; 2012 Mags Gamble, 2011 Mill Bling Bling, 2010 Mill Pinpoint, 2009 & 2009 Boherna Best, 2007 Wright Signal, 2006 Geordie Parker, 2005 Bell Devotion. Only one greyhound in history has managed to win back to back All England Cups and this is Boherna Best, what a special greyhound he was. Could Mags Gamble pull of this same magnificent feat? Eske & Warhawk Could Dazzle At The Toon If you are like me you will have been waiting on news of the superstars Ballymac Eske and Farloe Warhawk, not seen since

the Derby. I have spoken to Barry Draper and no firm plans have been made at the time of writing. Team Draper has had great success before in this race and if their stars turn up they will take the world of beating. This fantastic competition has fallen down the scale over the years but thanks to Belle Vue Owner’s Forum http://bellevueowners.proboards.com/it’s kept its place in the calendar. First run in 1927 it is one of the sports original competitions, it may only be worth £1,000 to the winner but should be a very good competition. The 1950s was this competitions hay day with 52 winner Ballylanigan Tanist who came into the competition has the 1951 Derby champion, runner-up in that 52 final was Endless Gossip, he went on to win the Derby and came back in 53 to be crowned Northern Flat champion. Being a Lancashire lad I have always enjoyed this competition and I fell in love with the 1991 winner Aylesbury Duck and still to this day he would be one of my favourite greyhounds of all time. This year’s winner may not scoop the prize-money others have but they will be stepping in illustrious footsteps. The best greyhound around Belle Vue this year has been Rackethall Tiger he looks the one they have to beat.

This was the Yorkshire St Leger and is another competition that has fallen from dizzy heights, we should though be thankful it is running. Doncaster is a cracking circuit, I am a big fan of racing manager Mick Smith (think he is one of the best in the business) this is sure to be a very good competition. Grass Roots is the name and I am going for a grass roots trainer to do well; Charles Lynch with his talented stayer Tambourine Man. I caught up with Charles: “He is a lovely dog, not great early-pace but comes home so well. He has been going so well at Belle Vue over 590m but I expect to see him improve stepped up in trip. He is very consistent and a pleasure to train, I hope he goes well and think he will. It is hard being a small trainer; we always have room for a nice dog and will travel.” Tambourine Man should be a nice price and definitely has each-way claims but the greyhound everyone will have to beat looks to be Jamie Smith trained Stepaside Glenis. At the time of writing this she has won an amazing seven-races on the bounce and just seems to be getting better with age. It is an amazing feat by trainer Jamie Smith and I hear this race is on her agenda.

This will be a cracker; I am a huge fan of races of this nature, it gives everyone a chance. It will be live on RPGTV and very much looking forward to watching, in terms of the winner, it is tough to call!!! So I decided to call Kevin Hutton who had three in the final last year; “We will have a right good go at this, It was a great competition last year and hopefully we can win it, I think we had 2nd, 3rd and 4th last year. Probably our best chance will be with a dog called Institute, he is a nice dog 28.55 on his card at Tralee but we will have a nice team for this competition.” Kevin won’t be the only one heading to Henlow, Seamus Cahill has not finalised plans but will have runners. Seamus said “I think it is great we have Maiden competitions it really is a great way to start dogs off in. We will give a few a trial around Henlow and make a final decision near the time.” Watch out for Kevin Hutton and Seamus Cahill trialists in the coming weeks, it promises to be very exciting!!!

he Betfred Select stakes is a unique race because the greyhound writers association decide on the runners, there was some critics after the runners where announced but they were silenced in fine style with one of the greatest ever running’s of this fabulous one off race worth £7,500 to the winner. Daddy Knowsbest (Chris Allsopp) and Holdem Spy (Carol Wetherall) both put in sparkling performances to cross the line locked together and verdict a deadheat. Daddy Knowsbest broke best of all and led them all a merry dance to make a mockery of his staring price of 8/1 but Holdem Spy 3/1jf (backed in from 11/2) is one of the strongest four-bend greyhounds on the circuit and came home like an express train. The crowd were left in awe, who has won it? Was on the lips of those in attendance and viewers watching the fantastic coverage on Sky-Sports. It seemed to take forever for the result to be called and in the end they both were worthy winners. It was fitting in the end that these great dogs and their connections shared the spoils in a great time of 29.67.

GAGA In Fine Tune

£2,500 was up for grabs in the Betfred Select Stayers and what looked a highly competitive race was turned in the Musical Gaga show. Dean Childs has in his care a truly amazing stayer, she is very versatile six or eight-bends, she is the greyhound they all have to beat. Sent off the 7/4jf within a matter of strides she would have been long odds-on, she turned very handy behind Afew Dollarsmore and you could have called her the winner from a long way out. At the fifth-bend she surged past and ran away from a top-class field to score by 3.25L in 44.61.

Rosney’s Stone Could Be A Diamond

Is there anything more exciting than seeing a young puppy come to life and put in a sparkling performance? We were all treated to a wonderful performance by Bower Stone for Pat Rosney, he trounced a top-class puppy field to score by 10L in a mind boggling new track-record time of 28.25 (for the 480m) Sadly Bower Stone picked up an injury a hairline fracture but reports are he should be ok and make a full recovery. He is not two till November so he has time on his hands and if he does come back connections will surely be dreaming of 2014 Derby glory.

risby Barney was runner-up in the 2012 Peterborough Derby but this year there was no stopping him being crowned champion and winning the £10,000 first-prize under the brilliant guidance of top trainer David Pruhs. Anyone who read the preview in this magazine will have noticed we were keen on Barney going one better and he did that in style. He stormed through the competition unbeaten; he broke the track-record in the heats setting new figures of 25.72 and storming to a 5.25L victory over last year’s champion Lil Risky. The semi-finals was another demolition job winning by 6.25L and clocking 25.98 -10 has he marched into the final. He was sent off the 1/2 favourite and anyone who was on ante-post never had an anxious moment, he rocketed out of trap-four, from that point on it was a race against his own track-record. He ran a fantastic couple of bends and showed sensational pace down the back straight to leave his rivals and spectators in delight. By the time he flashed over the line his nearest rival was Any Dak 3.75L behind in a fantastic new track-record of 25.69. Frisby Barney must be one of the most convincing winners of a competition I have ever seen. To win by an overall distance of by 15.25L is nothing short of incredible, he also did it from three different traps T2, T3 and T4 to show he is not only very fast but also versatile. oughteen Blanco is classy, very fast, tough and must surely be one of the best greyhounds to have graced UK racing certainly in this era. 2012 was an amazing year winning; The Classic and Henlow Derby. He was runner-up in the 2012 Sussex Cup but a year on he was to show everyone what a great champion he truly is winning the £10,000 2013 Coral Sussex Cup. I spoke to Shaun Gresham before the competition for The Sport we tipped him up ante-post but I have to be honest after seeing Teejays Bluehawk run him down in the semi-final I was not full of hope. Shame on me; he was sent off a 10/1 shot in the final but in the blink of an eye he looked 1/2 has he raced into an unassailable lead, he clocked a flying 4.01 sectional and that was simply too fast for the opposition. The field were closing at the line but the damage had been done early doors, the winning distance of 0.5L over Express Master in 29.58 +20 does not really tell you how dominate Blanco was. The dog will rightly get the plaudits but the brilliant training performance by Seamus Cahill and his staff should not go unnoticed, to have Loughteen Blanco performing at the highest level for this length of time is no mean feat.

The Coral.co.uk Sprint Boy is number-one

Zenas Boy is for me now the number-one sprinter in the country, he looks to be a sensational prospect and it will take something very special to knock him off this numberone spot. Gemma Davidson has a true sprinting star in her kennel and he looks like he is just getting better and better which must be a worry for the opposition. He did not only win the £2,500 competition he won it with style and recorded the fastest time of the year 15.96 +10. This is a greyhound that is worth following and connections are keen for him to go on the road and take on the countries best. His career targets will be Sky-Sports races, next up Yarmouth TV Trophy night, I am excited to see him already.

What A Night

There was some fantastic action on the night; one of best came in the £2,500 Ladies final when youngster Droopys Posh showed an amazing turn of speed to win 4.25L in 29.62 +20. This looks a youngster that has a fantastic future and will be interesting to see how good she can become. Jaytee Lightening took the puppies also worth £2,500 in good fashion, getting first run he proved impossible to pass, he won by 1L in 29.63 +20. evin Hutton is having a year he will never forget and his Airport Captain landed him his first major success in some style. This was one of the best nights of the year beamed out live on Sky-Sports, right from the first race you got the feeling this was going to be a very special night, little did we realise just how special. The bookmakers had the Champion Stakes final has a wide-open contest but Airport Captain had other ideas; sent off a 7/2 shot he ran away from a top quality field to record one of the most impressive victories you are ever likely to see. Recording a mind boggling 13.37 split it was no wonder the rest of field could not go with him, he was away and gone and at the winning line there was a massive 6.75L gap back to last year’s hero Smiler Jack in a sensational new track-record of 34.67 +20. The £10,000 first-prize and fantastic trophy were heading back with Kevin Hutton, he has his first major race success and it most certainly will not be his last. What a talented young trainer he is and who knows maybe there is bigger just around the corner in terms of a crack at the St Leger. Whatever Airport Captain goes on to do he certainly left a major impression on racing fans worldwide with this emphatic victory to go with his brilliant victory at Henlow last month.

Before the program went live Millwards Bengie made his debut and what a debut it was, winning by 3L in a sparkling 23.87 +10. He is only an April 2012 whelp and looks to have a very exciting future. To have one youngster with bags of potential in the kennel is good but there was more to come. In the final of the Coral.co.uk Puppy Final worth £1,000 he sent out Droopys Dustin, this was only his second start and he looks to be an amazing prospect, winning by 4L in 24.06. You get the feeling a stiffer trip will bring out the very best in Dustin and he could literally be anything. Bubbly Swallow also won on the night by a neck in 47.23 to hold off Blonde Reagan, Aero Gaga was the kennels best bet of the night (you were told on the Sky Greyhounds Twitter feed) he never let anyone down winning by a country mile official distance was 12.5L in 47.07 +30, we will be speaking to Jack Murrell again that is for sure. Throw in impressive wins for Bubbly Rocket and Bubbly Lucky and you have a sensational six-timer!!! Well done Paul Young and everyone connected.

haneboy Spencer is a fantastic greyhound; he recorded the fastest sectional during the Derby before going out in quarter-final, he then made the final of the Classic at Sunderland before arriving at Monmore for his Gold Cup Challenge.

It would be fair to say he lived in the shadow somewhat of his kennel mate Shaneboy Alley (2013 Arc Winner) but he came out of that shadow and grabbed the limelight in some style when capturing this prestigious competition. Spencer finished 3rd in the first-round after a bumpy ride but showed he was tough and managed to qualify when things went wrong for him. He was outstanding in the semi-final beating Eden Star by 1.5L in 28.19. For the £10,000 decider the bookmakers could not split Spencer and Eden Star making them 6/4JF with the talented Lemon Pluto a 3/1 shot, it was Pluto who broke best of all but after first-bend crowding Spencer was always on the scene at the third-bend he hit the front and would not be denied his big race success on these shores. At the line there was 0.75L between him and Eden Star in 28.37. Shaneboy Spencer will now look to head to Yarmouth for a crack at the East-Anglian Derby and in this kind of form he will be a worthy challenger. His year was held up with injury but now he is showing everyone just what he is capable of and Liz and Rab will be so proud to add the Gold Cup to an already amazing 2013 for them.

Allsopp stayer lights up Monmore

The Ladbrokes Gold Cup Festival 630 was worth £5,000 to the winner and a fantastic event in its own right. Sidelight has been in scintillating form of late, available at 6/4 she was backed into 1/1 and sent off a warm favourite. Her supporters never had an anxious moment, she took a flier once again recording a fantastic 12.57 split, the rest simply could not match her early-gears and the winning margin of 5.75L shows how dominate she truly was on her way to clocking 37.76. You would think Sidelight would be a big challenger come St Leger time, not too many stayers have her earlypace and that magical ingredient will serve her well in all the big competitions. Chris Allsopp had three in this final, what an achievement that was.

The Ladbrokes Gold Cup Festival Puppies - £1,000, was won by Barrie Draper’s Mustang Blitz. The hot favourite was Swift Keith 4/6, he missed his break and then was impeded at the first-bend along with the rest of the field, Mustang Blitz 3/1 showed great pace after the first-bend trouble and managed to hold off the challengers winning by a neck over Droopys Genie 8/1 with Swift Keith a short-head further back in 3rd in 28.61.

Bookies Lady has that magical ingredient serious early-pace and that was what made the difference in this A2 competition. In the heats she was sent off the 6/4f, lids opened and she pinged, away and gone to record a 4.25L victory in 30.30. In the final Lady was sent off a very hot 4/5F she took an absolute flier recording a scintillating 5.07 sectional, she quickly raced into an unassailable lead, Drumcrow Lauren 5/1 tried her best but Lady was gone, she had 2.5L in hand and recorded a great time of 30.09 +20. I was intrigued to find out more about Bookies Lady so I caught up with her trainer Malcolm Cooper. “She is a fantastic bitch to train, very easy, great to handle and no trouble what so ever. Ladies biggest asset is her early-pace she was magnificent during this competition and so pleased for everyone connected. Unfortunately she picked up a knock in the final but will be fine, we will have a go at the little Oaks competition next month at Nottingham.”

The GBGB unfairly in many instances come in for stick but let me tell you speaking to Bookies Lady owner Alan Taylor these races are a massive success and mean the world to owners.

Alan Taylor owner said “I own her with my son-in-law Matt Robinson, we bought her from Perry Barr sales for 925 gns, It was the very last trial of the day and she was beaten by Too Old Todream by 8.25L, he has turned out to be a very good dog on the open scene, she impressed us with her early-pace and we bought her. We don’t own any open-race greyhounds so to be involved in the Owner’s Bonus Series races is fantastic, you never used to get a chance to run in competitions or for this sort of money. It was one of my proudest moments in the sport. We had come close with a few other dogs but this is our first win and would like to thank everyone for putting them on, this win meant the world to me.” Just listening to Alan it is clear just how much these races mean to people, it can’t be under estimated what an impact they are having for owners of graded greyhounds around the country, we should celebrate these races and praise the powers that be for delivering them.

August. Twenty-four hours later he ran the race of his life at Nottingham, storming to a sixlength victory in a sparkling time of 29.73 – was this a minor miracle? Russanda Duke is a talented greyhound but his two previous starts he finished third, off to Church he went with his owner Chris Smith and assistant trainer Sean Parker to be blessed, there will be many that will scoff this approach in the game but you can’t deny he bounced back to form and ran the race of his life. Fr Wilson said: “This is a first for me, I have never been asked to bless a racing greyhound before, it is however in the remit and the Church allow this procedure, I’m a soft touch were dogs are concerned, being a massive dog lover”. While Fr Wilson plays down his magnificent feat owner Chris Smith was more convinced saying: “My father Crim Smith had coursing greyhounds with the brilliant John Carter, he had his greyhound blessed before she won the Waterloo Plate and other big races. “I believe there is something in this, Duke ran the best race of his life and we noticed a change in the dog. 200 Club: Stay Sane Hits 200

om Edgar and North Bank Racing Club must be delighted with their greyhound Stay Sane who on the 17th August made his 200th career start at Newcastle Greyhound Stadium. It was so very nearly a dream 200th race for this great greyhound but in the end he had to settle for 2nd spot but ran a very creditable race. I caught up with Tom Edgar “We bred Stay Sane and he was one out of seven in the litter. This will be his 200th race of a brilliant career. “He is the last lad of the litter still racing, all of the others are retired and living with different families. “He has been a gentleman to train and we have a nice home waiting for him when he retires, which may be a while yet, as he enjoys racing so much.” Stay Sane is a credit to Tom and Newcastle greyhound stadium and to mark this great achievement we even got Operations Manager Ian Walton to turn in cameraman and mark this magnificent occasion with a couple of pictures. Why be a breeder?

ecent announcements make you ask the above questions. The number of litters being bred is still falling, yet those in a position to halt this decline appear to do nothing but shrug their shoulders and mutter and mumble amongst themselves. The latest announcement is that the breeders show is to be cancelled amidst fears of an ‘anticipated low turn out’. The majority of UK breeders are based in the midlands, north and Scotland, yet the festival is held at Harlow where breeder numbers are low... I wonder why the turn out is low! As I’m sure the meerkats would say … find another venue further north...simples! The same press release also says that there are virtually no dogs standing at stud in the UK. Well, off the top of my head I came up with around 30 … and all within about 5 minutes, so who comes up with this nonsense ? We need some initiatives and incentives. Dog shortages are already here … so a wake up call is needed before it becomes worse, or even chronic. Breeders always seem to be the least thought of, yet without

them there would be no sport. For an average sized litter, doing all of the work yourself, and not taking in to account your time, it costs a breeder around £1,200 to get a pup from birth to the track, and this is without any unexpected extras that happen from time to time. Yet breeders are expected to sell a graded dog for less than cost, no wonder numbers are falling. We need more British bred races, surely the fund/breeders forum can put aside a little extra to help encourage British breeding. We are down to one produce stakes that is way too complicated to enter and is biased depending upon the age/date of birth of a litter (an 18 month old pup may have to take on a two and a half year old seasoned racer.) We don’t even have a British bred Oaks. As a breeder myself, it is not always about money. It is often the great feeling when your home bred wins an open race, reaches a final, or hopefully wins a final. A British bred Oaks would be a major boost... after all … who doesn’t want an Oaks winner or finalist to breed from ?

The winning time of 34.67 was a new track record, his second TR after recording 32.94 when winning the Bunny bookmakers Gold Cup at Henlow. he televised performance of August goes to both greyhound and trainer of what was one of the highlights of the year so far, and one of the most remarkable training performances ever seen.

However, having failed to fire in reproducing the sort of form that had seen him land two Category Ones, compete in numerous Category One finals and contest for the accolade of 2012 Greyhound of the Year, it was wondered by many if Seamus Cahill’s Loughteen Blanco his best days were well and truly behind was campaigned for this year’s Derby as him.

1 – Loughteen Blanco

The consistent sparkle from lids-rise just wasn’t quite there at both Wimbledon and Sunderland, and a red-hot Sussex Cup looked well and truly beyond him. However, Seamus and wife Teresa worked absolute wonders in getting their kennel star to the final of the £10,000 showpiece at their local track Hove at earlier this month, before arguably and

Unfancied having set to the sand at double figure prices – and rightly so given the improvement required to compete with the likes of Teejays Bluehawk – the son of Droopys Scolari showed extraordinary early boot in clocking one of the quickest ever sectionals over the 515m trip ever recorded - 4.01sec. Granted the track was on fire, but the break, pace shown to the bend and electric middle speed off the second turn was phenomenal. Not only was the overall performance incredible, but the ability shown from the Cahill’s to get a tune out of their speedster when it mattered most was a perfect example of why the kennel is up there as one of the very best in the game. It really was a top class field left trailing behind that night, and the plaudits must go firstly to a greyhound strutting his stuff well into his fourth year but equally to all those that contributed to getting this greyhound back to flying like the aeroplane that he is.

2 - Airport Captain

Perhaps an unoriginal runner-up for performance of the month, but Champion Stakes final night Romford witnessed one of those magical jaw-dropping moments that make this great sport so exciting. Possessing enormous middle pace and having absolutely no problems in seeing out the soft six bends at Romford, Kevin Hutton’s first ever Category One winner will forever live with the immensely talented handler as well as all those who were on the terraces at London Road, in their local betting shop or plotted up at home watching live on Sky Sports. Having been at Romford the night Solid Money clocked an astonishing 34.78 back in July 2004, I doubted if I’d ever see a greyhound cover the 575m at Romford as impressive or quickly. Given the number of open races staged at Romford, for any long standing track record to be broken there is incredible. As already mentioned, the running style of Airport Captain is not reliant upon a quick break, but as soon as he set to the sand in the manner in which he did - the final of the 2013 Champion Stakes was simply over. Streaking away drawing further and

further clear, I was fortunate enough to be trackside that night and it was evident something special had occurred – only for that school of thought to be rammed home once the winning time had been announced. Kevin Hutton is still relatively new to holding a training license, but if his greyhounds continue to produce the kind of performances we’ve seen so far, he’ll continue to grab the headlines for years to come and looks all over a future champion trainer.

3 – Droopys Dustin

Staying at Romford, something of note Champions Stakes final night was obviously the fact the track was running extremely fast, but what was more intriguing was the ability of only a couple of runners to win their race from off the pace. The track at London Road is undoubtedly suited to front runners and anything able to be led and still win is of real interest, especially when the track a quick. It was a fantastic night for local handler Paul Young, but the victory of Droopys Dustin in the Puppy final must surely have ranked up there as one of his best. On only his second start, the January 12’ whelp rode some serious early trouble before showing middle pace and track craft well beyond his years. Dave Mullins classy youngster Milford, is a hugely talented greyhound when on the bunny and had pinged the boxes. The leader had turned into the back straight with a comfortable three length lead but Paul Young’s son of Irish Oaks winner Droopys Twirl showed enormous middle pace simply breezed past in a manner of a greyhound heading for the very top. To come from off the pace at Romford on a night like that, in the fashion in which he did and clock 24.06sec off of a pretty average break — not only is Droopys Dustin a very respectable third in the August televised performance of the the month, but he is also a greyhound to follow with a very bright future indeed. To quote Mr Greyhounds himself, Errol Blythe, when commentating that very night, “Droopys Dustin, a name to conjure with!...”.

MARK PIERREPONT OF SALACRES RACING

Queen heading for NI Derby M yself and Peter Harnden travelled over to Dundalk on Sunday 18th August with Salacres Khan and Salacres Gem. It was the Bar One Sprint Final night and along with the Dundalk International meeting this is one of Dundalk stadiums biggest nights of the year. We’d entered Khan for a 400yrd race and Gem for a 620yrd race. While Khan could never get competitive after a missed break, Gem ran with credit behind the very impressive winner Monleek Storm. In fact Monleek Storm won in a time just 14 spots slower than Dromana Blue’s 6 year old track-record, so it was no shame to be beaten. I must admit though that our main reason for visiting the track on this night was to see Peters bitch Queen Of Rangers in action. Oyster as she’s known in the kennel is now trained by Deirdre Walsh of Manilla Kennels and is ably assisted by Adrian Markey and Micky Fegan. Oyster is one of the best bred bitches of her generation, being sired by Droopys Scolari and out of prolific open class producing dam Farloe Oyster. Originally purchased to compete in open races here in England, it’s an open secret that we were not happy with the bitch from the night she arrived at the kennel. It took a long time to get her into shape to even win A1 races for us at Nottingham and though we were relatively pleased with that, she wasn’t bought to run in A1. We genuinely believe that had Deirdre trained Oyster from day one, we would have been looking at one of the fastest bitches to ever grace a track. Peter gave the bitch a clear season and then at the second time of asking we took her over to Frightful Flash Kennels to be mated with Premier Fantasy. Fantasy was an obvious choice to be the sire of her first litter, he’s well proven with this line and hopefully Oysters pups to him will throw up a winner or two as well. I am though sad to report that the dog which was looking like being the fastest of the litter has suffered what could be a career ending injury on the schooling track. This pup was showing tremendous pace in his school-

ing trials and it was gut wrenching when he picked up this injury. I must say though that Oyster’s second litter to Kinloch Brae, even at just 4 months old, look a bigger, stronger litter altogether. Hopefully in 12 months’ time or so they’ll be showing potential on the schooling track. Back to Oyster herself, she recorded 28.68 in her first four bend trial back since whelping that second litter and it was this run that persuaded Deirdre to enter her for the 525 open at Dundalk on Bar One Sprint Final night. She was the talk of the track on the night and if it hadn’t been for a missed break and having to navigate a passage around the outside of the field, I would be fairly confident in saying that her comeback run would have been a winning one. Next step the Northern Ireland Derby over Drumbo Parks 550yrd trip.

DOG TO FOLLOW

Last month Peter’s dog to follow from the kennel was Salacres Borzoi. He continues his schooling and we remain confident that this dog will be winning races over the coming months. He’s a big and slow to mature type so will definitely improve for experience, he remains one to keep in your notebook. This month’s dog to follow is his full sister Incredible Ruby. Ruby has been performing well in her trials and even at this young age is showing signs that she may well appreciate a stamina test in time. That said she should be more than capable of winning a race or two over the 500m at Nottingham whilst learning her trade, so keep her on side.

IAN BLAND: OUR INSIDE MAN AT CRAYFORD

Early pace key in Kent I t’s early pace that wins races at any track and that certainly applies here at Crayford. I believe that the percentage of dogs that lead at the first bend and go on to win is somewhere in the 40-50% bracket, include the second dog at the turn and this goes up to the 70-75% range so I thought this month that I would give you some insight into our top speed merchants who incidentally often win at very generous odds. Sharons Delight trained by Steve Gammon started his career here in June 2012 in bottom grade A8 over 380 metres and made relentless progress up through the grading system to run his first race in top grade A1 in March of this year. His current record shows fourteen wins and sixteen seconds from sixty two races, which is a good strike rate in the frame for a grader, and note that he has trapped out first on no fewer than twenty two occasions. As a wide seeded runner he makes the most of picking up the bunny early and is an extremely hard dog to get past once leading early on. He has explosive early pace and has recorded sectional times as fast as 3.47 seconds which is about as fast as it gets at Crayford but he has been found wanting on occasion over the last sixty metres, when up against the very best we have. If you fancy backing him just make sure that he has the win times to hold off the opposition, if he has he will always give you a good run for your money. Trainer Julie Luckhurst constantly reminds me of how little she paid for Tarsna Inca, this usually happens after her dog has won an A1 or Open race but I don’t mind as I am very fond of the pair of them and both are very good at their jobs. Tarsna is equally effective over both 380 and 540 metres and she consistently returns good sectional times for both distances. The stats read eighteen career wins and eleven of those have been trap to line add trapped out in second place and you can add another six victories. So with her it’s simple if she leads she wins and with sectionals in the region of

3.53 seconds and 12.80 seconds for 380 and 540 metres respectively she also has the proven stamina to hold on to an early lead. She is an owners dream but shrewd trainer Julie kept her for herself, understandably, can you get me one like Tarsna please Miss Luckhurst! Interestingly not all of the speed merchants are to be found in the top grade as you might expect. Drop down to A3-A4 level and you will find little Impossible Fairy a veteran now of seventy six races all at Crayford. Starting her career here in late 2011 these are her winning grades nowadays as she has always found A2 difficult in the past being probably one level too high. She has recorded a 3.48 seconds sectional in an A2 race only to finish last so clearly she does not have the necessary speed to stay with our best over 380 me-

tres. She undoubtedly prefers trap six to trap five and if getting around the first two bends in front she generally gives a good account of herself. If your game is looking for those decent win prices then I would draw your attention to both Crossfield Jack and Melodys Patsy who are both capable of coming up with the occasional surprise when against the best. The general view with this pair is that they are just short of top class but you can not ignore the stats and they prove my point about those early sectionals being the key. Jack’s last three wins have been at odds of 9-2, 8-1 and 10-1 and Patsy’s last five successes at odds of 6-1, 4-1, 6-1, 5-1 and 12-1. All of these eight wins were as a result of sectional times in the 3.48 to 3.59 range and neither dog was ever headed in any of these races. I rest my case.

Yarmouth Derby looms

Irish Derby

ne of the hardest 4 bend races to win on the GBGB calendar is about to get under way at Yarmouth stadium this month; The East Anglian Derby is one of the most keenly sought after titles in our sport and the winners roll has some of the fastest greyhounds to grace our race tracks.

Only 3 greyhounds have managed to defend their title; Happy Harry in 66/67, John Coleman trained Our Rufus in 78/79 and the Charlie Lister trained Fear Zafonic in 2009/2010. Paul Young trained Bubbly Phoenix will be attempting to retain his title with his first competitive competition since March, the son of Collage Causeway had a great year in 2012 winning the Monmore Puppy Derby and The East Anglian Derby before sustaining an injury and he will take all the beating if returning to his form of old. In training terms Charlie Lister has claims to be the King of Yarmouth winning the race 11 times with his first victory in 1981 with Swift Band, and his latest in 2010 with Fear Zafonic and this year is no different as Charlie has a very strong hand going into the competition. The Jerry Maloney, Ennis Co Clare bred Sidaz Jack is having his first competitive race since winning the English Derby. The son of Westmead Hawk has moved well in his trials at the venue and has a style of running that will serve him well round Yarmouth, the strong running Farloe Tango who was a derby 1/4 finalist and recently broke the 672 mts track record at Coventry has been a great greyhound for ‘The Boys From Leicester’ winning over 50% of his races to date. Buzzing Around who stopped the clock at 28.89 in his first race at Tralee, Silverview Pinky and Killieford Khali will make Charlie a formidable force again this year. English Derby 1/4 finalist Bonamassa Rocks bred and trained by David Mullins will be an interesting runner in this competition; the son of Timor Blue is a very fast greyhound and ticks all the right boxes for a big run at Yarmouth. Our own Borna Monty has had his first look at the track and went well for his first run there; he clocked a 5.37 sectional (sidaz jack clocked 5.30 on same session) but moved off at the 2nd bend and was short on the run in. This was a fair run 1st time round and I would expect good improvement on his next run. Yarmouth Stadium is one of Greyhound racing success stories; from its early days as a flapping track to the modern stadium with

great facilities for the casual visitor or those that want to dine in style, it has something for everyone. It has a restaurant with superb service, viewing and an atmosphere 2nd to none. It reminds me of a smaller version of Walthamstow Stadium and it shows that with proper investment and management that greyhound racing is a great sport, business and fantastic facility that should be available in all areas of the UK. The Franklin Family should be applauded by the greyhound fraternity and used as a beacon to all promoters and prospective promoters across the country. The GTA are working on various projects at the moment and hope that if these come to fruition they will help improve the greyhound trainer’s standards, our sport has been through a very tough few years with the number of registered greyhound trainers dropping quite drastically. The financial situation for many greyhound trainers in the UK is not healthy and it is important that there is a fundamental change in how our sport is funded and how those funds are distributed. The GTA are represented on GBGB committees by Mark Wallis, Linda Jones and myself, we have been well received into our respective committees and have had practical input into our particular areas. It is imperative that we have involvement in all of the GBGB committees; it is unacceptable that the GTA do not have representation on the greyhound trainer’s assistance fund. It bring into question WHY the GTA are not allowed on to particular committees?

The Irish Derby is currently in full swing with Carol Weatherall’s Holdem Spy flying the flag for the UK in the 3rd round. In the past couple of decades it has been the Irish coming over the water in force to take our riches either in the Scottish or English derby’s, yet in the late 60s early 70s when greyhound racing in the UK was a business working well with the best greyhounds in training in the UK, the current trend was reversed. John Bassett was the first UK based trainer to win the Derby with Yellow Pinter in 1968 and Walthamstow’s Dave Geggus followed up with Sole Aim’s victory in 1971. Much later Nick Savva won with Toms The Best in 1997 and was unnaturally unlucky not to win it for a second time a year later, but how many people know of the exploits of my old guvnor Tony Dennis when winning the Irish St Leger at Limerick in 1957? Kilcaskin Kern a 1955 whelp by English St Leger winner Magourna Reject had just won the Grand Prix at Walthamstow and being owned by an Irish priest in Co Offaly he was taken over to Limerick by Tony for what is the oldest classic in Irish greyhound racing. The 60lb fawn duly obliged and his exploits were reported on national TV and in all the national newspapers, a point that our industry should learn from for today’s market. During this reporting it came to light that all the prize money that Kilcaskin Kern earned went towards the building the local village hall in Co Offaly which would never have been done without this input, it also brought to light the fact that the true owner of Kilcaskin Kern was a priest Father Twomey and he had to register it under the name of O’Callaghan because of his religious background.

Orchard Kennels have a new litter of 15 month old puppies completing their grading trials at Romford Stadium, they are a May 2012 litter by Timor Blue x Borna Moon. The entire litter of 3dogs and 2 bitches look a class act and will be well worth following in the coming months.

Blogging life on the road as a kennelhand BY KAAN HUGHES (KENNELHAND FOR ALMA KEPPIE) his month the blog has travelled abroad to Ireland, and I’m in love with the Irish as usual, I may have been born Irish I just don’t get my founded love for them? Wednesday 24th July and I’m sat in Southampton Airport waiting for the flight; these are the worst bits waiting to get there, you just want to be there. When we did arrive at about 1pm and cleared customs, we had to go and get a car. Went up to ‘Budget’ car company and asked how much for full insurance on a medium sized car (ford focus) £450 was the answer so we said we would wait for the other two to finish their fag and we’d crack on, but during that time I had hovered to a green company whilst Alm was chewing the budget man’s ear off and asked him how much he would sell us one for who clearly was going to go a bit lower £400 not including premiums… Ok, I’ll be back so I went back to budget and the man said so go on how much did he offer it for, I said £300 with everything in, he couldn’t believe it, right he shouldn’t have either. I said if you don’t want our service I’ll take it elsewhere, £320 is the lowest, £300, £310, deal. Thanks 1-0 England. Next stop the hotel. Checked in at Bewleys at around 2.30pm and it looks like Buckingham Palace. We are heading off to Naas races now and I cannot wait. We didn’t really get an address which was a silly idea just putting Naas in ‘Susan the sat nav’ because Naas is a big area, and we ended up miles away from where we should have been going in a place called

Hollywood and when I saw the Hollywood sign on the grassy hill I did panic we had driven 3000 miles to the USA, but no it was a copy and a lovely area, highly recommended if considering a move to Ireland, hi where are you from…I live in Hollywood! Eventually we did get on track but missed the good thing in the first win at a nice price which Alm had picked out, but my banker had not run yet, Fortify ridden by Joseph O’Brien, whilst at Naas I

couldn’t pick a winner so ended up watching the racing from England in the betting shop. I had to have a bet, it would be rude not to, 5 euros the 5 dog at Swindon please, of course it obliged we are having it off in Ireland. It was a 11/4 shot but you’d think I’d had 3 grand at 10/1 the trouble I got being paid out…The night went well Fortify obliged and although being bet into 4/6 it was a good winner as we shouted from the terraces.

On leaving the track we were virtually mobbed again by sellers with prams loaded with Tolberone bars and grapes. When I told her I was dairy free and Alm was diabetic I think she thought we were having her on. Next stop the bar at our hotel. Thursday 25th July and we are heading to the Dunphy’s, home of the famous Droopy prefix at around 2pm so in the morning I thought it would be a good idea to go in to Waterford and have a look round as we have done before so I can

admire my dream ornament, the Crystal Harp! Wow. Waterford reminds me very much of Weymouth, a boating village, but as me and Richard looked for a McDonalds and got deeper into the heart of Waterford you realise it’s not so small as we trekked back with our chicken select and big mac meals burning off more calories than we were going to eat. At around 1.15pm we headed off for a careful drive to Portlaw where the Dunphy’s are based well I say careful but we had Richard Jones at the wheel aka Jenson Jones. What I love about the Dunphy’s, is how laid back they are and welcoming. They showed us around all of the pups then gave us the tour of the stud dogs something which anyone who’s been will echo that you just cannot get over the line of champions, Westmead Hawk in kennel one followed by College Causeway, Sparta Maestro, Blackstone Gene, Blonde Snapper, the list is endless! Unbelievable. After being shown around we had a chat and drink in their house and eventually set off home on a journey that will go down in history as something called a pub search? We last time went to a restaurant called Tougher’s when heading back from the Dunphy’s over two years ago but are determined to find it, but seeing as we thought it was called Brewster’s it was always going to be hard to find it, Michael said do you mean the priory, I think he was booking us a place in one thinking we were mad, but turning off every junction around Carlow where we thought it was not that we had a clue we did actually find it, highly recommended, what a pub. Now we are heading back to the hotel to get showered and changed and head to Shelbourne. First time I’ve been racing here as last time it was flooded although we had a look round it simply is fantastic and the premier track of dog racing, I must buy one of those flats off the 2nd bend, what a view and to top it off they have the Aviva stadium behind which is simply remarkable. The night was anything but profitable for me Rich and Barry but Alm won as per usual they say money goes to money! Next stop the hotel bar! Friday 26th July and we didn’t have an awful lot to do today as we were going to Harolds Cross in the evening. So we decided to go to Dublin town centre for a bit of shopping, whilst there me and rich

aren’t ones for too much clothes shopping, more food shopping so we left Alm and Barry in the gift stores and headed off to an all you can eat buffet with 7 countries food, we certainly got our money’s worth one hour later. Something that I had wanted to visit, the Guinness factory. I will say anyone that has the chance I highly recommend this, it may not sound interesting and only the free pint will attract a few but it is highly fascinating how the beer is made, truly great but climbing seven stories high on escalators was the only downside seeing as I am terrified of heights, but the panoramic view of Dublin when you get to the top is surreal. We then headed back to the hotel for a quick change wash and to head for Harolds. Such a wonderful track and last time we came we had a meal so it was only tradition and so we had a fabulous four course meal and thoroughly enjoyed what was the start of the puppy oaks a race I didn’t know was on but wanted to see and a bitch I had been following was having her first race so to be there for Razldazl Bonnies first race was quite special and to top it off she obliterated a high class field. As you can guess though I didn’t win neither did the others bar…Alm! Top night though, next stop…you got it, the hotel bar! Saturday 27th July and today was a day where we didn’t have a lot to do in the day so the night before I had been searching for things to do, we couldn’t go too far as the main attraction was the Champion Stakes in the evening at Shelbourne. I looked at a few horse studs and somehow stumbled across the idea of getting in touch with Willie Mullins undoubtedly the greatest Irish jumps trainer there is. Emailing him on the Friday evening before we went racing I hardly expected a reply, but on arrival back from track I opened an inbox message to say, “yes you are more than welcome to come down be there for 10am!” Wow, this is unbelievable, the man has even given me directions and his number in case we get lost. It’s about an hour from Dublin, near the Carlow area. I’ll be honest I said to the others don’t expect a lot he will probably give us a stable lass to show us round and 10 minute we will be gone. On arrival he introduced us to everyone there such as one of the greatest jockeys Ruby Walsh and many others like Patrick Mullins and David Casey as if we were some of his owners/royalty. Then he gave

OUT AND ABOUT WITH KAAN us a tour of all the stables, and other parts to the setup such as tack room, office, silks room and much more. However fascinatingly he was more interested in showing us his chickens he had reared. Each to their own, I have reared some too Willie! After this he said we will now go back over to the gallops and watch the second lot gallop, after gentle warm ups we saw some great horses flying up the hill there, one being Grand National fav ‘On His Own’ After this he told me to saddle up and canter up the hill along sides Ruby Walsh as he said I was ideal to be a jockey and looked to have potential. As I was cantering down the field, I felt like I was turning the Cheltenham hill and looked between my legs at Ruby and opened the wings on my horses as if we were neck and neck in the Gold Cup. If only that last sentence was true, it was something I did actually tell someone though and they did believe me! I’ll be honest today was one of the greatest things I’ve done and enjoyed, the man is simply a legend and Mr Cool, nothing phases him and he is as good a judge too putting us on ‘Wicklow Brave’ who three days later who won the Galway Bumper. We have also been given two horses to follow, ‘Supreme Balerina’ and Rubys Horse to follow is ‘Indevan’. After such a great time here we were offered to then go back to the Curragh to watch some horses school but we were hungry so headed to Tougher’s, as we needed to get back to get ready to go to Shelbourne. We got there early as the Panther was trialling and although now on reflection he has been retired I am still happy to say I saw the great dog run. The night was truly buzzing and some top class racing was seen but when Paradise Madison drew level with Jaxx on Fantasy at the 3rd turn the roars went up and the atmosphere was surreal. I must say also that one of my favourite bitches in training Airforce Diva won the last race to top off a great few days and believe it or not I ended up going home with more money than I came to Ireland with.

Sunday 28th July, unfortunately we had to wait around and get ready to head back to England. I had a morning stroll to get a few snacks and of course the racing post whilst admiring the scenery. Eventually we set sail for the airport of which I find so boring it’s so many hours of wasted time and to top it off we had a delay because the run way was flooded. Nature’s way of telling us it didn’t want us to leave maybe?

We have had a terrific month, banging out winners left right and centre so far we have had 8 winners and only 24 runners obviously some have been doubled up as well so all is well on that front so we are certainly heading in the right direction. Support from owners of old and new has been great and I hope it can continue as we look to the future with some nice dogs. Archaton Peach a new dog who we purchased from the Harlow Sales will be worth siding with in the coming months as she looks to be well suited to Poole with a nice zip of early pace. Whizzing Tiger is a dog who I think highly of and he has yet to come away at Poole and still blew away a good field by 4 and a bit lengths in a fast time, the dog has good middle gears and I’m sure will give us many winning nights and do the owners proud, maybe when he has established himself even better as he is still lightly raced he could nick a maiden at Hove. There is also a dog who has not been sent over just yet but if we do seal the deal he could be a massive prospect for competitions, and may even be a syndicate dog within the kennel if interest arises. As always we are continuously getting new dogs sent too us from people I have ultimate trust in and they are available for ownership solely or syndication to stay in the kennel. The fans at Southland Park Gaming & Racing will select one greyhound either online or through on-site ballots to represent each race kennel. Ballot voting will begin July 15th and continue through August 16th. Kennels will nominate three entries for the public’s choosing and those receiving the most votes will represent that kennel in the qualifying rounds. On August 24th, the BetAmerica.com People’s Choice Challenge qualifying rounds will begin consisting of one race with eight nominations and the top four making the final. The last qualifying race will consist of nine nominations with the top five moving on to the final. “We often hear from greyhound enthusiasts about wanting to match certain greyhounds against each other; now they’ll have their chance. Born and raised in Chicago the great late Mayor Richard J. Daley would say ‘Vote early and often.’ We want the racing public to live by that creed at least for one month,” stated UGR Founding Director Erik Koltz. “We’re very thankful that a premier racing facility, Southland Park Gaming & Racing, shares our vision and will allow the public the chance to draw the field. 1.) Atascocita Gray- Has recently returned from a stakes event in Texas. Impressive winner of 2013 Southland Futurity Final where he nearly went undefeated through the competition. 2.) Clyde of Ruckus- Son of Southland great Soprano Drive. He also strikes a strong resemblance. He’s a nine time winner this year, mostly all in top grade and possesses the always dangerous early foot that usually puts him first at the turn. 3.) Arkans TT Gator- A young pup that showed enough precociousness to close out June with back to back AA wins. Bright future.

David Blair Kennel:

1.) Mega Euforia- As of this writing, this big 68 lb female is on a three race win streak. She’s 11 for 28 since starting her career in January. She’s the first of three entries for owner Jeff Blair. 2.) Mega Velocity- A surprise Southland Derby finalist has seemed to have hit his best stride since the start of summer. A ten time winner on the year, he has climbed the ladder. 3.) Mega Lazlo- He’s been around much longer than his kennel mates. Having a good year, albeit with just four wins, he’s a steady earner.

Gloria Dorsey Kennel:

1.) JT Redneck Romeo- Has been hot lately with two wins, a second and a third in his last four. Early speed specialist relies heavily on his break. 2.) Dachamp- After a brief stint at Palm Beach, he’s back at Southland holding his own with a win, two seconds and a third all in top grade. 3.) CT Heartbreaker- Has yet to win top grade at Southland but has proved his class by competing in a couple big stakes in South Florida.

Jeff Lovely Kennel:

1.) Big Road- Has competed in several stakes, winning the Hound Madness Final and was third in the Southland Futurity Final. Considered to be one of Southland’s elite. He has thirteen wins on the year. 2.) Pirate Dragoon- Consistent with many seconds and thirds on the year. He has just one win but is always a tough competitor in top grade. 3.) C Ville Nerkle- Easily one of the most interestingly named dogs nominated. He’s still a young pup trying to crack into the upper echelon.

Legg Greyhound Kennel

1.) KL’s Lucas- Eight time winner on the year is equally good at the 583 and 660 distance. Has a nice late kick and stakes experience that includes a runner up placing in the Hound Madness.

2.) KL’s Spencer- Not quite two years old as of this writing but he’s been very competitive and should only get better. Recently reaching top grade and has three thirds. 3.) KL’s Elliot- At 63 lbs, he’s one of the smallest males you’ll see. It’s yet to slow him down though. After a little more than three months of racing, he had reached top grade. He has six wins since starting his career in February.

Lester Raines Kennel Ar Llc

1.) RS Libbys Choice- After beginning his career at Derby Lane, he was quickly sent to the big leagues at Southland and he has responded well with a 19 for 25 in the money record. He was also a Derby Finalist. 2.) RS Money Clip- Began her career by climbing the ladder to AA in just nine starts. She’s 7 for 27 in her short career. 3.) Flyin Supergiant- Still a young pup with just six races as of July 15. A winner in four of those. Ran a 31.65 in schooling before beginning his official career.

Magic City Kennel:

1.) Kiowa Producer- In his short time in West Memphis, he’s accomplished a lot including last month’s Derby Final victory for his second major stakes win of the year. A remarkable 12 for 19 at Southland. 2.) Nitro Stubby- 4 for 32 on the year but 9 second place finishes, all but two of which were in AA. Proves he comes to run each time out. Winner of the 2012 Southland Futurity. 3.) Track Dynasty- 10 wins this year, including two in top grade.

Mike Harris Kennel:

1.) Super Gift- She’s spent most of her career in Florida and even had a stint in Iowa. Southland’s her fifth track and she’s done little to disappoint. A win and several placings through ten starts. 2.) RCK Genghis Khan- Four wins this year in grades C, B, and A. But has some

back class and is always a danger to hit the board as he just keeps coming. 3.) PG Scottfree- Six wins on the year but has yet to win in top grade thus far in his career.

North Shore Kennel:

1.) Manhatin- Undefeated through his first six starts of his career which includes a top grade score. First to accomplish this since Zinger Sonic Sam who won his first seven. Major superstar potential. 2.) Vacant Box- Has just sixteen lifetime starts and is currently in AA after recently competing in Derby qualifying. He has five wins. 3.) Heyl- Had an eye opening career debut in mid June which he won by 14 lengths. He’s taken two of four since.

Plum Creek Kennel:

1.) Mike Ross- One of the most consistent dogs on track with a record of 34- 109-3-2. Nearly made the finals of the Derby and was 2nd in the Futurity Consolation. 2.) Stevie Nicks- Much like her kennel mate, she’s ultra consistent although at a lower level. She has four wins on the year. 3.) PJ Yankees- His career just began in May. He’s only 2 for 9 so far but has an incredible late kick. With a little more seasoning he’ll be heard from much more

Robert Thorne, LLC. :

1.) FF Code Red- Well known Southland star has made the Finals of this year’s Derby and last year’s Festival of Stakes

Sprint. Also a finalist in the Mardi Gras World Classic in Florida. He’s 5 for 15 since returning from Florida. 2.) Slatex Frito- Four time winner on the year has been a steady AA performer for most of his career 3.) Slatex Selene-Dropped to grade A just once in nearly a year and that lone stay was a short win as she quickly won before returning to AA. Five wins on the year.
