COVER: 2019-20 Victorian Greyhound of the Year Whiskey Riot in action during his sensational racing career.

Welcome to the September edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria and the first day of spring. Firstly, I’d like to congratulate all the winners at the 2020 Victorian Greyhound Awards. I’m sorry none of us could all be there together in person but it was great to join you online to reward our sport’s achievements and particularly so at a time that makes these achievements even more remarkable under the circumstances. I particularly applaud the GRV Board’s decision to present its Leadership Award to the entire industry for what has been a truly exception al effort to keep our sport literally on track since March, protecting the health and safety of everyone involved while still delivering some of the best racing we’ve seen in a long time. Speaking of which, I also congratulate Making Gravy and trainer Adele Powell for a very strong and consistent performance in winning the 2020 Waterloo Cup at Lang Lang last Sunday. And we can look forward to more great straight racing at the 2020 TAB Healesville Cup on Sunday 6 September and you can catch all the action live on GRV’s Watchdog app. In other racing news, the new Saturday morning racing slot is running well with strong nomination fields and average wagering turnover of around $1.2 million for each of the first three weeks. Both SEN and RSN are delivering dedicated coverage of these meets and GRV is stepping up promotion for the US markets where they are broadcast live on Friday nights. And I am pleased to announce that, following discussions with GCV, $373,000 has been provided to restore prizemoney levels for feature races to ensure they stay at the same level as they were last year and to take some of the financial pressure off clubs. This includes the Melbourne Cup, Bold Trease, Temlee, Zoom Top, Silver Chief, Australian Cup, Fanta Bale Super Stayers and Topgun events. The Country Cups that have been topped up include the Ballarat, Geelong and Sale Cups. And another one of Victoria’s

In off the track news, I’d like to remind you that GAP Preentry assessment sessions are continuing as normal at clubs that offer facilities that allow COVID-19 safety restrictions to be properly implemented. All new GAP bookings are accepted through Racing Services as normal and I encourage you to book in early. Finally, please be advised that the Cranbourne Racing Complex has been given a deep clean following a positive COVID-19 test from a nearby horse stable. This was a precautionary measure taken by GRV and Cranbourne Club and the venue’s greyhound racing schedule continues as planned. On this note, I ‘d like to thank you all for how well we’ve adapted and adopted protocols to help lower the COVID risks within the sport. The fact that we are still racing while other industries have been forced to close or reduce hours shows that our commitment to safe racing has not gone unnoticed. So please keep wearing masks or face coverings and observing social distancing at both race meetings and trials. GRV is here to help you so if you have any questions about Permitted Worker Permits or COVID Safe Plans, you can call GRV’s Participant Support line on 1300 144 360. Whiskey Riot raises GOTY glasses BY GERARD GUTHRIE

Anthony Azzopardi has achieved just about everything greyhound racing has to offer since moving to Victoria in 2016 and he celebrated another major accolade when Whiskey Riot was named 2019/20 Victorian Greyhound of the Year. Azzopardi relocated from NSW to test himself in Australia’s greyhound racing capital and says the depth of competition makes Melbourne Cup hero Whiskey Riot’s achievement even more satisfying. “It’s quite an achievement by the dog,” said Azzopardi at Sunday’s announcement. “The best dogs are down here in Victoria – it’s very hard racing – and to have a top dog to win this (Greyhound and Sprinter of the Year) you’ve got to be mighty proud.”

4

“We were just blown away; to be honest I’m even tearing up now,” she told GRV’s Molly Haines. “We were absolutely thrilled with the news and so happy for him to get the accolades he deserves and also for Anthony, Kylie and Kayla because of all the effort they put in to make him such an incredible performer. “He was super-consistent throughout his career and he’s given us some absolutely amazing moments of joy and celebration. We couldn’t be prouder of him.” A son of 2015/16 Victorian GOTY and Hall of Fame inductee, Fernando Bale, Whiskey Riot won 11 of his 24 starts during the July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 eligibility period. The undisputed highlight came in the Melbourne Cup, while he was a two-time winner at Group 1 level, also defeating the best sprinters in the land in the Temlee invitational. Whiskey Riot was denied a third Group 1 trophy by the barest of margins in the Adelaide Cup, when edged out by fellow Victorian Hooked On Scotch, while he also ran second in the Maturity and third in the Topgun and Australian Cup. Two wins and seven minor placings from 10 appearances in Group finals underlined Whiskey Riot’s consistency at the elite level; however there was absolutely no doubt about his standout moment arriving on the sport’s greatest stage, Melbourne Cup night. “Most definitely,” Azzopardi said. “It’s the greatest race in the world. It’s one of those races everybody aims for and I’m very proud he won it, especially this dog. “I’m very close to the dog and for him to win a Melbourne Cup he’s certainly fulfilled my dreams.” As was the case with the previous GOTY, Orson Allen, Whiskey Riot claimed the award in retirement, having gone out on a winning note on April 2 at Sandown, fittingly the scene of his career-defining Melbourne Cup triumph.

“I think he deserved to go out as a winner – he went the Best of Night. It couldn’t have been a more perfect ending than that.” Whiskey Riot brought an end to the Wheeler family’s four-year GOTY domination via Fernando Bale, Fanta Bale (2017/17 and 17/18) and Orson Allen (18/19). The Victorian Greyhound of the Year is based on performances during the racing year (July 1-June 30) as adjudged by the Victorian GOTY Panel.

Top ‘Detective’ BY PETER QUILTY

True Detective is the 2019-20 Victorian Stayer of the Year. Trained by Jeff Britton at Anakie, True Detective ‘laid down the law’ – predominantly with thrilling frontrunning prowess – to win 22 races from 38 starts during the racing season (July 1 - June 30). He contested eight group race finals, winning four: G1 Hume Cup (600m) – The Meadows; G2 Summer Distance Plate (720m) – Wentworth Park; Listed Gold Cup (710m) – Albion Park; Listed Sky Racing Stayers (715m) – Sandown. True Detective was also runner-up in both the G1 Fanta Bale Super Stayers (725m) at The Meadows and G1 Sandown Cup (715m), fourth in the G1 Zoom Top (725m) at The Meadows and third in the G3 Speed Star (595m) at Sandown. Owned by the Kramerica syndicate, managed by greyhound media identity George Farrugia, True Detective (Aug ’17 Black Magic Opal x Little Grey) established a stunning record from Box 1 during the racing year. He won eight races from 11 starts in the ‘red’ alley. “He’s been a big thrill this dog, we think he deserves it,” an elated Farrugia said. “He’s made us proud time and time again and to collect this award is awesome. He’s been challenged in races and been able to take on all newcomers, we’re just so really proud of him.” Farrugia added that the patience Britton and his partner Angela Langton showed in building him up over 700 metres was fantastic. “I think there were some people that were saying, ‘I don’t think this dog will ever get 700’. His first couple of runs over it he was getting really tired but that’s just a testament to Jeff and Angela, their training regime. Jeff always had confidence that he would run it out and it’s been an unbelievable ride since.” And Farrugia quipped: “At Wentworth Park, when he won the Summer Plate, I gave him (Jeff) a big kiss on that big bald head and we’ve gone on in leaps and bounds ever since. We’ve become mates since that kiss, that’s for sure.” True Detective took out the prestigious award from (in no particular order) Tornado Tears and Just Terms.

Industry ‘leads’ the way… BY PETER QUILTY

In a unanimous decision, precipitated by unprecedented times, the 2019-20 Greyhound Racing Victoria Board Leadership Award recipient is the ‘whole industry’. “We have changed it up,” said GRV Chair, Ms Peita Duncan. “We had a Board meeting where we chose who that recipient would be, and to be honest, it was unanimous because of the year we’ve had.” Ms Duncan added: “It’s not just around the COVID pandemic at the moment, but getting through the bushfires and canine (corona)virus, which means we lost race meetings because we didn’t have enough dogs, and now obviously the enormous effort that’s gone into keeping us racing. “And to my competitive nature, I just want people to remember that Victoria – and I’m very proud of the Board and the executive team about this – we just held the line from the first lockdown in March until today, and we worked very hard with our State Government.” Ms Duncan expressed her thanks to the Premier and Minister for Racing “for supporting us and understanding that we are low to no risk, and that’s allowed us to continue to race”. “What I’m particularly proud of, is that we stood tall and we did not reduce our race program to regional models or take races away. We did not reduce our prizemoney across the board, we only reduced feature races, which we had to… and I think the trainers were more than understanding of that.” Ms Duncan added: “And we just kept going and tried to be five steps ahead in terms of protocols on track to keep us racing… So that the trainers, the dogs, the whole industry kept ticking over; and for the communities they live in as well and for the livelihood and safety of the dogs and trainers and their mental health, we just were not going to put ourselves at risk. “And I think the participants with their dogs, Greyhound Racing Victoria, all of the staff at GRV, we’ve absolutely come together as a big family and we have knocked this out of the park in terms of being able to continue to race the full program. And not only that, we have three extra race meetings a week.” Ms Duncan said that “whilst we’re in crisis, we’ve also seen the opportunity to innovate”. “And we’ve done that, and for the first time ever we’ve put our vision into the US – that is happening. We’re doing the day-to-day managing of COVID issues and keeping things on track. But at the same time, we’re still continuing on that commercial journey, albeit a bit different now… But we’re still pushing hard on any innovation we can get.”

6

Ms Duncan added: “So, having said that, the Board unanimously decided that the leadership award this year is going to every single participant in the industry… So, I just wanted to congratulate everybody. And I’m really proud of that, and it’s all about the people in the end that make an organisation or an industry great. And I think that without a doubt we have stood up and we are shining like a beacon. I

feel quite emotional about this because I’m so proud of what we’ve done.” And Ms Duncan concluded: “This is just our way to acknowledge everyone in the industry because you have shown nothing but leadership and support and you understand what the consequences could have been for us, and I’m very proud of that. “So, congratulations to everybody, keep doing what we’re doing and once we’re through COVID, I’m hoping it’s at the end of the year, my plan is I will go to every single track in Victoria – just at a normal race day, not for a big event – just to go and to thank the trainers personally myself at every single track.” Pawnote: The GRV Board Leadership Award was introduced in 2019 as the highest award of excellence to a leader in the Victorian greyhound racing industry and/or community.

Dailly’s training double BY PETER QUILTY

Andrea Dailly was awarded the 2019-20 Victorian Metropolitan and Provincial Trainer Premierships at the Victorian Greyhound Awards. It’s the third successive year she’s claimed both prestigious awards. Based at Anakie, Dailly scooped the pool with yet another racing season of sheer excellence. Dailly won the ‘city’ award with 135 wins. She also notched 121 seconds and 114 thirds at Sandown Park and The Meadows. Another Anakie trainer, Jeff Britton, was runner-up (80 wins) and Pearcedale’s Jason Thompson third (62 wins). Dailly also secured the ‘country’ gong with 214 wins, ahead of Balliang’s Mark Delbridge (205) and Jeff Britton (140). Her ‘shining season’ was highlighted by the racetrack deeds of kennel star Shima Shine (Nov ’17 Barcia Bale x Shima Song). Shima Shine won three metropolitan races and 10 provincial events during the 2019-20 racing year (July 1 - June 30) and contested four Victorian group race finals, including the Group 1 Topgun (525m) and Group 1 Silver Chief – both at The Meadows. He also established track records at Ballarat 450m (24.75sec) – August 28, 2019 and Bendigo 425m (23.35sec) – June 28, 2020. However, Shima Shine certainly wasn’t ‘Robinson Crusoe’ in the Dailly camp. She had a host of stars contributing to her stellar racing year – including: Jaro Bale – (8 metro wins); Finalist: G1 Melbourne Cup and G1 Temlee Rockstar Beav – (10 metro / 2 provincial); Finalist: G1 Fanta Bale Super Stayers; G1 Sandown Cup; G1 Sale Cup Aston Cade – (6 metro / 4 provincial); Finalist: G1 Australian Cup; G2 Warrnambool Cup

Leon Bale – (7 metro / 1 provincial); Finalist: G1 HarrisonDawson; G2 Warrnambool Cup (3rd) Kessler Bale – (4 metro); Won: G3 Sir John Dillon Memorial; Finalist: G1 Hume Cup Rockstar Prince – (4 metro / 1 provincial); Finalist: G1 Maturity Classic Lektra Spring – (2 metro); Finalist: G1 Hume Cup (3rd); G3 Sir John Dillon Memorial Faithy Bale – (7 metro / 5 provincial); Finalist: G2 Warrnambool Cup

Criteria Guidelines The Victorian Metropolitan Trainer’s Premiership will be awarded to the Victorian registered trainer who trained the highest number of winners of full metropolitan stake money races, conducted at Victorian metropolitan tracks, during the racing year (1 July to 30 June). The Victorian Provincial Trainer’s Premiership will be awarded to the Victorian registered trainer who trained the highest number of winners of full provincial stake money races, conducted at Victorian country tracks, during the racing year (1 July to 30 June). GRV WELFARE AWARD: DR BEC GOODE

The 2020 GRV Welfare Award has been bestowed on a stalwart of greyhound welfare and a name familiar with many greyhound fosterers and adopters: Dr. Rebecca ‘Bec’ Goode. As the in-house veterinary surgeon at GAP, Bec sees thousands of dogs every year and, in her words, “does all that might be needed before they go out to their adoptive homes.”

There’s much more than that, however. Bec is a regular at GAP and GRV events. You’ll often find her checking teeth in a tent at a community day or providing information to a room full of owners about toenails. Or dandruff. Or diets. Or at the GAP café going over the intricacies of ‘happy tail’. There’s so much to talk about with greyhounds. “They’re almost a species in themselves. They’re lovely dogs, but also fascinating from a vet’s perspective. They’re so compliant and easy to deal with.” Bec has been with GAP for eight years. She graduated from the University of Queensland in 2001 and opened the Port Phillip Animal Hospital in 2006 with her husband Craig, who still looks after the Middle Park practice. On top of this there’s the ‘Greys Matter’ specialty service, and five boys at home (not including Craig) to wrangle.

Dr Bec at a Greyhound Community Day at The Meadows.

8

Bec is keen to sing the praises of GAP. “They have such an amazing foster care network and foster support. To have the contact with the greyhound community, reassuring them, checking things through, but also seeing them be able to manage veterinary issues. We’ve got an amazing group of people out there.” Like many in the profession, Bec is also keen to share her knowledge. “Greyhound a re very different to other dogs, and I think what I love is learning about they ways they are so different, and helping others recognise that as well.” “I’m very, very humbled by this award. It’s just amazing. I’m over the moon.”

Gravy pours on the pressure in classic Waterloo Cup BY ANDREW COPLEY

The 2020 Waterloo Cup was taken out by Making Gravy on 30 August in what could be described as the ultimate reward for consistency. After two consecutive days of coursing up the Lang Lang straight, the Adele Powell-trained greyhound emerged as the only undefeated contender throughout the time-honoured Waterloo Cup series. Pure Magic (red collar) and Making Gravy (white collar) battled it out in the final, with the latter the only one of the two with previous coursing experience under his belt, and he proved too strong. Handler Michael Ryan said Adele had planned her Waterloo Cup mission well in advance. “He (Making Gravy) coursed really well at Longwood a couple of months ago and got stronger and stronger with each run.” “This has been a great training effort by Adele, to condition this dog so well, and Making Gravy is a really special dog to do what he has done this weekend.” “To course undefeated five times over the two days, including three times today, is a huge effort.” Making Gravy (Black Bear Lee x Bit Classy), who turned three this month, is a first season courser.

Making Gravy with handler Michael Ryan

He had won five from 17 on the circle heading into the Waterloo Cup, and has been a model of consistency on the coursing circuit, now winning three of four coursing events he has competed in. It was a great first attempt at coursing by the Justin Nolantrained Pure Magic (Black Magic Opal x Segovia), who has won five races from 12 starts on the circle, all in the best time of the day.

Keeping out of the woods: avoiding positive arsenic swabs GRV would like to take this opportunity to remind participants to be mindful of greyhounds chewing or licking kennels or yards constructed with CCA (Copper Chromium Arsenate) treated (‘tanalised’) timber. CCA, used to preserve and protect wood from dry rot, fungi, mould, termites, and other pests, contains arsenic, and has been the likely cause of several urinary arsenic threshold breaches in recent times. Destructive and repetitive behaviours, including chewing parts of the kennel or yard, bedding and bowls, and persistent barking or howling, are commonly reported abnormal behaviours in greyhounds. They often can be a result of prolonged stress or anxiety, boredom resulting from a lack of company, insufficient exercise and/or mental stimulation, or frustration created by a lack of opportunity to engage in normal, healthy behaviour. These are coping mechanisms for the affected greyhound; they help relieve stress, but they are also habit forming. Greyhounds chewing on CCA treated wood in their kennels or yard has implications for: ■

Greyhound welfare: a greyhound exhibiting abnormal behaviours such as chewing the wood in its kennel is often a sign that it is stressed and that its environment does not meet its psychological needs. Greyhound health and racing performance: while arsenic in CCA treated timber is toxic, and greyhounds chewing on wood risk injury to their mouths and teeth, stress driving this behaviour also can reduce a greyhound’s ability to heal after injury and suppress its immune system, meaning it is less able to fight infections.

The risk of returning a positive swab: because of the arsenic in CCA treated timber, there is a risk that ingestion will result in a breach of the arsenic threshold, which stands at 800 ng/mL for urine samples. A positive swab results whenever the threshold is exceeded, regardless of whether exposure was accidental or deliberate. Participants are also reminded that a few injectable supplements and some seaweed or seafood-based nutritional supplements contain high concentrations of arsenic and participants that choose to administer these products close to racing do so at their own risk.

Addressing wood chewing and other abnormal behaviour is important, not just to reduce the risk a positive arsenic swab, but also to improve the health, welfare and condition of your greyhounds. Providing behavioural enrichment and regular socialisation through enhanced social contact with people and other dogs, providing bones, toys or food puzzles, and/or modifying scent or sound stimulus (e.g. music) in and around the kennel are excellent strategies to reduce behavioural issues in your greyhounds. If in doubt, seek help from GAP staff, who can provide support over the phone, or contact your veterinarian or a professional dog trainer. Further information: ■

Nutrition is an important part of your greyhound’s health and its race day performance. Understanding the main nutritional components of food will help to optimise your feeding regime and reduce your feeding costs. The main components of food are split into two categories: macronutrients and micronutrients. The macronutrients are protein, fats, carbohydrates and water – they are needed in significant amounts for a greyhound to survive, grow, perform and reproduce. The micronutrients are vitamins and minerals – these are essential for maintaining bodily functions and supporting healthy bones, nerves, muscles, and energy metabolism. Relative to size, greyhounds have a higher energy need than other dog breeds. An average 30 kg greyhound needs around 1700 - 2000 kilocalories (Kcal) per day compared with a 30 kg Labrador which only needs about 1400 kilocalories. Not all macronutrients are created equal: Unlike humans, dogs primarily rely on fats rather than carbohydrates for energy. Fats provide more energy (measured in kilocalories) per gram than either carbohydrate or protein. Carbohydrates (the main macronutrient in bread, pasta and rice) are also used as a source of energy but too much carbohydrate can predispose a greyhound to cramping. Protein is essential for building and repairing muscle; but it is not used as a direct source of energy. If your greyhound is not getting enough kilocalories in its diet, protein will be used as energy by breaking down its own muscle. A good guideline for your greyhound’s diet is: Protein providing close to 24% (20 - 25 %) of the energy requirements.

Fat providing 40 - 50 % of the energy requirements.

Carbohydrate providing 25 - 40 % of the energy requirements.

Not all foods are created equal: Good quality dry food diets are formulated to be nutritionally adequate with balanced levels of essential amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Many trainers feed a combination of fresh meat and kibble, plus an assortment of supplements including, eggs, bread, oil, and powdered vitamins. However, a correctly balanced, premium quality dry food can be fed on its own and still provide your greyhound with everything it needs to be fit, healthy and meet its racing potential. When selecting a dry food, bear in mind that better quality foods will have a higher meat-based component (more protein and fat) which will be beneficial to performance. They will also be more digestible and more consistent in terms of ingredients, formulation and macronutrient distribution. Not only is a premium quality dry food simpler, it is also cheaper and gives you peace of mind that your greyhound is truly being fed for racing success.

MGRA assumes Healesville administration Hot off the heels of an exciting edition of the Group 1 Maturity Classic, the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) has some important Club announcements. Effective August 1, 2020 the MGRA has been appointed by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) as the new Administrator for the Healesville Greyhound Racing Association (HGA), a move welcomed by MGRA Chairman Eddie Caruana. “The MGRA believes a great deal of our role is to provide support and opportunities to the broader greyhound racing industry and we are looking forward to assisting the Healesville Club in any way we can.” “We have a great team at The Meadows both on and off the track, and hope that Cynthia (HGA General Manager) and her team at Healesville will benefit greatly from access to these additional resources and support.” MGRA CEO Ashley Baker noted the benefits of aligning the two Clubs was twofold. ‘We are thrilled at this time to announce our Club’s intention to build a straight track for racing at our Broadmeadows site.” “We recognise that straight track racing provides statistically some of the safest racing and our Club is committed to providing safe, state of the art facilities that contribute to the sustainability of the industry.” “The addition of a straight track to complement our existing premium two-turn track is the right move for our Club and the broader industry at this time and we are hopeful that it’s a project we will be able to get up and running in the not-toodistant future.” “Taking on the administrative role with Healesville means we can both assist their Club with their operational requirements whilst learning the nuances of straight track racing from Cynthia and her team.” The MGRA is currently in the process of working with Council, GRV, planners and engineers to create a development plan for the existing Broadmeadows site and adjoining land, with more exciting details to be released in due course.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT

BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.

Vaccinations August has seen a potential Kennel Cough outbreak with multiple reports of coughing dogs, but with quite mild symptoms, low numbers of affected dogs and quick recovery. Several coughing dogs at GAP were tested and found to be free of Kennel Cough. The 2017 outbreak had devastating effects on race fields, GAP intakes and on greyhound welfare, so it is critical that we limit any Kennel Cough infections now to prevent this occurring again. Can you please be vigilant, get veterinary advice if you get any coughing dogs and contact GRV so we are aware of what is happening in the industry. Good hygiene and biosecurity practices are vital to limiting spread and impact of any infectious disease. Any greyhound that has Kennel Cough or has been exposed to Kennel Cough, MUST be scratched from any races it is nominated for, and not trialled or taken to other communal training facilities or GAP. Most importantly, under the Code all greyhounds must have a current C5 vaccine, which means a yearly Kennel Cough vaccination (with a C3 every 1-3 years), in line with Establishment Health and Management Plan requirements and veterinary advice, preferably with an intra-nasal or oral vaccine, which are faster acting and more likely to be effective than injectable vaccines. GRV recommends vaccinating all your dogs for Kennel Cough at the same time of the year to keep it easy to remember, preferably in the autumn before the Kennel Cough season. If they are normally vaccinated later in the year, you could synchronise them next autumn by vaccinating some slightly early. For more kennel Cough information including clinical signs, biosecurity information, vaccination considerations and avoiding a positive swab to cough medicines, please visit https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/wp-content/ uploads/2019/04/Welfare_Fact_Sheets_2019_Kennel_ Cough.pdf.

GAP update and COVID-19 restrictions Under stage 4 restrictions in metro Melbourne, GAP preentry assessment sessions are continuing as normal at clubs that offer facilities that allow the very strict COVID-19 safety restrictions to be properly implemented. All new GAP bookings are accepted through Racing Services as normal. If you are considering GAP for a greyhound, or you envisage a requirement in the future, please book in early to avoid the waiting time when you need it. Booking in early doesn’t commit you but it does give you an option if you need it at short notice. In terms of adoptions, GAP has decided to deliver greyhounds to adopters in metro Melbourne (stage 4), while adoptions for people living in regional (stage 3) areas still occur at Seymour. The ability to carry on adopting is critical to our ability to keep accepting greyhounds from participants.

Timber chewing in greyhounds Recent positive swabs to arsenic have again highlighted the issues with greyhounds chewing CCA-treated (tanalised) timber, due to the arsenic in the timber treatment. Chewing behaviours can also damage greyhounds’ teeth and mouth from biting on metal in runs and pens. Often, boredom is the reason a greyhound displays behaviours such as chewing and excessive barking. Boredom is the result of a greyhound not having enough physical or mental stimulation. Greyhounds suffering from boredom are stressed and use valuable energy when they should be resting. Stress produces stress hormones that slow injuries from healing, muscles from repairing and adapting to training, and impede growth. Boredom is relatively easy to resolve. The key to reducing boredom is to give the greyhound something quiet and stimulating to do - to enrich the kennel environment. Abnormal behaviours in general, often also called stereotypies, are behaviours that are not normally seen in behaviourally healthy greyhounds; or normal behaviours repeated excessively; and/or normal behaviours that are being performed when they normally would not be. Other common examples include pacing, excessive barking, bopping, licking and panting. Abnormal behaviours

‘Abnormal behaviours in greyhounds’ (fact sheet) has some valuable information on identifying and managing abnormal behaviours. Once you understand why a greyhound has developed or is developing an abnormal behaviour, you can consider appropriate training, exercise and environmental enrichment strategies, as well as possible infrastructure or husbandry solutions.

2.

‘Barking in the racing greyhound kennel environment’ (fact sheet) discusses excessive barking and presents different options for managing and retraining excessive barkers. With persistence and patience, they should provide good results that are enduring through to retirement and re-homing.

FEATURED CLUB FEATURED CLUB

Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club Manager Profile Rod Ward We all know that football and greyhound racing are a great match, nobody understands that better than our Ballarat club manager Rod Ward. Rod grew up in Queenscliff and Wedderburn but spent most of my life in Bacchus Marsh. With his father working in the Commonwealth Bank, he saw a lot of Victoria with several relocations as a child. For as long as Rod can remember he always followed the greyhounds. If you are on the good side of your 50s, like Rod, you will know take away food was a huge treat. So, it’s not surprising that Rod’s fondest memory involves take away food and a winning greyhound. He recalls visiting the old Olympic Park track with his dad and uncle, and yes, the dog had a good win but more importantly he had KFC on the way home. In the past he enjoyed backpacking and travelling. He still enjoys travelling but has stepped it up from backpacking. Rod loves the outdoors and enjoys nothing more than arriving in a new city and exploring it on foot. After 16 years working for Telstra in finance & administration, Rod has spent the past 18 years working for the AFL managing, supporting, and growing participation across community football. We are very pleased to have Rod and his family as part of our Ballarat Club, but Rod is another self-professed unsuccessful punter.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA SEPTEMBER 2020

The best greyhound to come from the Ballarat area would undoubtedly be Bombastic Shiraz, bred and raced by the Cairns family (David, Kaye and trainer Darren). The champ was whelped at Lal Lal, 20 km from Ballarat. Amazingly, in his 35-start career, he never raced on any other tracks except Sandown, the Meadows and two starts at Wentworth Park. In a short but outstanding race career he won 18 times and was placed on 11 occasions for $355,915 in prizemoney. In a purple patch in late 2003 he won the Shoot-Out, Melbourne Cup and Top Gun. Retiring to stud after the Top Gun win, he proved an instant success producing Victorian and AGRA Greyhound of the Year Flashing Floods from his first litter. Standing for leading Stud masters Bob Douglas and then Geoff Collins he sired 3968 pups. In a long list of high-class performers, the best would be Miata, Fabregas, Cindeen Shelby, Velocette, Spud Regis, Regal Thyme, Bit Chilli, Metz Magic and Spring Gun. Bombastic Shiraz won the 2003 Victorian and AGRA Greyhound of the Year, the AGRA Stud Dog of the Year 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013. He was inducted into the Victorian Hall of Fame in 2013.
