Firstly, I am pleased to welcome two new members to the Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) Board, Bill Buccilli and Daniel Nugent, both who have extensive experience in the sport and strong business skills. I am also very pleased that Peita Duncan has been reappointed as Chair of GRV’s Board for the next three years and that Emmett Dunne is taking up the role of Deputy Chair.

Back in March GRV increased prize money and started programming more races for stayers (races of 480 metres and longer), delivering benefits for the dogs, trainers and breeders who are looking for more distance racing opportunities. And last month GRV added an additional $1.3 million to the prize pool, including more money for May and June races and for certain grades well suited to younger greyhounds. As part of this package, the new Pink Diamond series also received $790,000 in prize money and breeder bonuses which are available exclusively for Victorian-bred greyhounds throughout this June.

As we come to the close of the financial year, a very good picture of the sport’s wagering performance over the past 12 months is becoming clear. By the end of this April, total national turnover on Victorian greyhound reached $2.82 billion, a 40% increase on the same time last year, and an all-time record for the sport, even before we reach the end of this financial year.

This phenomenal growth has been driven by an expanded racing program and an increased customer base following the extended closures of other wagering sports and of retail TABs around the nation last year. GRV is now working to maintain and further grow this customer base.

And speaking of racing infrastructure, the Traralgon redevelopment, which includes a new state of the art track and a major facilities upgrade, remains on schedule for completion in mid-September. Then, following trials, it is expected to open for racing in late October which will be a great start to our summer racing season.

Thanks to this strong wagering outcome, GRV is in a good position to consolidate and build on racing initiatives introduced in 2019-20. GRV is also planning to increase investment in track infrastructure to sustain the demands of an expanded racing program and the growing uptake of free trials. We will continue working with individual clubs, and with Greyhound Clubs Victoria, to improve existing tracks. We are also developing a masterplan for Cranbourne to ensure a long-term future for racing in the region.

How the race was won: Qwara Bale was ‘coronated’ as Australia’s sprint queen with a powerhouse performance.

She jumped well from the awkward ‘green’ alley (Box 6) and was positioned third early, around six lengths behind her tearaway kennelmate and G1 Australian Cup finalist Shima Classic.

But the G2 Warrnambool Cup winner came with a withering finishing burst to land her 13th – and most important – win from 22 starts. It was her fourth successive win and she also made it four from four over this track/distance.

Qwara Bale ($3.40) defeated the gallant Carry On Star ($17.20) by 0.83 lengths, with Shima Classic ($3.20F) a further 1.18 lengths away third in a slick 29.27sec.

Exiting smartly from Box 8, Tiggerlong Tonk ($3.40) set sail after tearaway leader Catch The Thief ($10.40), proving too strong over the latter stages to score by 1.37L over the ‘pilot’. Rank outsider Carry On Angel ($62.80) was a further 0.86L away third in a sizzling 29.23sec. An 11-time G1 finalist (including victory in the Perth Cup), Tiggerlong Tonk notched his 39th win from 79 starts. It was also his 12th win from 27 starts over this track/distance.

How the race was won: Contesting only his third staying start, Zipping Rambo won the world’s premier distance race.

Backed in from an early quote of $12 into $4, Zipping Rambo was third until passing the distance boxes where he moved into a clear second behind ‘pilot’ Tyler Durden. He took over proceedings entering the home straight before staving off NSW staying supremo Stanley Road ($5.00) by 1.6L, with a fading Tyler Durden a further 0.51 away third in 41.72sec. It was Zipping Rambo’s 15th win, including five from the past eight. The middle-distance ‘action hero’ is now a staying ‘mercenary’!

New Board faces at GRV The Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula, has announced the reappointment of Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Chair, Peita Duncan and the appointment of two new board members.

“The appointment of Bill Buccilli and Daniel Nugent will add significant depth and expertise to the GRV board.” Minister Pakula said.

He also announced the appointment of Emmett Dunn as Deputy Chair.

“Peita Duncan has very ably led the code through the pandemic and I am pleased that she has agreed to continue to serve as chair, and that Emmett Dunne will be her deputy.”

The two new appointments are Bill Buccilli and Daniel Nugent.

Mr Nugent has extensive commercial and corporate experience including senior roles at Energy Australia and KPMG. He has been actively involved in the greyhound racing industry and is a former member of the GRV industry consultative group subcommittee.

Mr Buccilli has a long and successful association with the greyhound industry, including as an owner. He brings significant experience in real estate management to the board, having held a number of director roles at Melbourne agencies.

Minister Pakula said under the leadership of Ms Duncan, Greyhound Racing Victoria had advanced the code’s safe racing strategy, continued to put integrity and welfare at the centre of the sport and ensured an uninterrupted racing program during the pandemic.

Mr Dunne was first appointed to the board in 2016 following a 40-year career as a police officer and has significant experience in ethical standards and integrity. He is also vicepresident of the Richmond Football Club.

The greyhound racing industry in Victoria generates more than $500 million for the economy and provides 4,300 direct and indirect jobs across the state.

Hounds around town gather at the GAP Cafe As crowds slowly come back to Melbourne’s central business district and the chill of winter closes in, the GRV GAP Cafe seems like the perfect haven for greyhound owners and passers-by.

And, at GAP headquarters in Seymour it’s back to business as normal as the public no longer needs to make an appointment to find their forever friend.

GAP Cafe’s Rachel Yeo says it a good feeling to see the regulars returning and newcomers turning up to the King Street outlet to get information on greyhound adoption.

“We restated our regular events, Coffee and Canines and the City Walks in May and were gearing up for a more hectic schedule in June,” Rachel said.

“We had a couple come in recently asking millions of questions about greyhound adoption and those ultimately become our most loyal customers and friends after they adopt.”

As cafe life resembled the pre-lockdown days, Rachel was busy between cappuccinos and hot chocolates, toasties and cupcakes and distributing greyhound advice to customers such as regular, Sally from South Melbourne, with her snappily dressed Boof and Henry and Kate with their recently acquired Chester.

“We didn’t know about the cafe until we met another greyhound walker in Carlton who suggested we should drop by,” Henry said.

“We’ll definitely be back,” he said as Chester became acquainted with Boof and resident Horse as they lined up for Rachel’s special latte and biscuits.

Corey and Rachel from nearby North Melbourne dropped by for more info on adoption and after Rachel’s advice and a coffee, were heading home to register for GAP greyhound.

And, as the walk-ups from the neighbouring hospitality college lined up, life for Rachel and the GAP Cafe seemed to be slowly return to normal.

Traralgon update The Traralgon Track redevelopment is progressing on schedule with all underground works, which commenced in January, completed.

All major civil works are complete including the dam, which has doubled in size, allowing for maximum water storage.

The track is in shape with the base being laid to reflect the actual racing surface camber and the access underpass has been installed.

The underpass has been designed to reduce the walk from the kennels to all starting boxes for participants and their greyhounds on race days.

Next stages of the redeveloped track include the installation of the light poles, fencing and lure running rail.

Provided there are no major delays, trialling and then racing is likely to commence in October.

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) advises against the feeding of knackery meat by reason of the dangers that it can contain prohibited substances that, when ingested, will provide positive results upon sampling. GRV also warns of the dangers of inadvertent exposure to personal (human) medications and the vigilance that is required when feeding greyhounds in this respect. Other known sources of human foods which result in positive swabs if digested by a greyhound, such as bread or other baked goods containing poppy seeds, foods containing chocolate, and liquids such as tea or coffee including other products from health food shops or gyms that may contain caffeine or other stimulants.

Feeding greyhounds knackery meat and/or engaging in insufficient hygiene precautions (e.g., not wearing gloves whilst handling food or failing to wash hands after taking medication or using the bathroom) are known risks for contamination.

Unfortunately, despite the well-understood risks, there is an increasing number of greyhounds being presented for racing while contaminated by prohibited substances. The presence of a prohibited substance in a registered racing greyhound undermines the integrity of the industry and depending on the prohibited substance, can lead to animal welfare issues.

The Victorian Racing Tribunal (VRT) has also expressed its concerns in a number of recent matters regarding the volume of cases that continue to come before the VRT claiming accidental contamination.

Whilst each case will continue to be assessed on its own merits and in accordance with GRV’s Prosecution Guidelines, participants should expect increased penalties for breaches relating to the feeding of knackery meat or contamination from human medications or other human foods.

In August 2016, GRV published the ‘Feeding, Medication & Supplement Guidelines’ on its website and GRV Monthly Magazine, and more recently in July 2020 published an article in the GRV Monthly Magazine ‘What’s in your greyhound’s food bowl’.

Greyhound Racing Industry Participants are once again urged to visit these guidelines and this article via the links below to help understand the risks and consequences associated with the feeding of knackery meat and exposure to personal medications.

This Notice is to alert Greyhound Racing Industry Participants that GRV Stewards will seek an increase in penalties for any sample taken from a greyhound after 1 September 2021 which results in a positive test to a prohibited substance (as defined in the Greyhounds Australasia Rules (including permanently banned prohibited substances)) that are presumed to have occurred from inadvertent contamination through the feeding of unfit for human consumption meat (knackery meat), from contamination with personal medications or other human foods.

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination and ensure your Kennel Cough vaccine is up to date.

Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine.

In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.

New Breeding Exemption Application Form mandatory from 1 June 2021 GRV has released a new Breeding Exemption Application form which includes Code of Practice requirements. This new form will be mandatory from 1 June 2021. The new form replaces the two forms that were previously used (two-step submission), with a single form to be completed by both the breeder and their veterinarian (one-step submission). GRV has informed all greyhound veterinarians on the database and sent them a copy of the form. The racing rules require pet retirements to be reported to GRV within 10 days of the retirement, so retirements reported several weeks, months or years later are a breach of the rules and create issues with verifying new owner details.

The Code of Practice has very specific requirements regarding the retirement of a greyhound to a member of the community. Please ensure when retiring a greyhound that you are familiar with the requirements of the Code, including the mandatory paperwork you MUST complete and submit to GRV. Retiring greyhounds as pets In recent times GRV has seen a large increase in the reporting of the retirement of greyhounds as pets. While this is a very pleasing trend, GRV would like to remind participants of the following:

GRV is a licensed microchip registry and has legal obligations to verify new pet owners’ details before transferring the greyhound into their name. GRV therefore is required to contact every person who is reported to have adopted a greyhound (except the registered racing owner who retains their greyhound as a pet).

It is critical that GRV receives enough information to be able to contact the new owner and update the registry with correct details; this includes a full name, full address, email address, phone number and alternate contact (name and phone number). If the information provided is false, the matter will be

WELFARE AND REHOMING REPORT

Oral Health for Greyhounds Greyhounds, like people, must have regular dental care to ensure they are healthy. The soft nature of many greyhound diets can result in a build-up of plaque and tartar on the teeth. This can lead to gum infection, tooth decay and poor oral health.

Studies have shown that humans and animals with poor oral health can suffer from generally poorer overall health. High levels of bacteria in the oral cavity and decaying teeth can impact on a greyhound’s ability to eat, and affect digestion, energy levels, muscle development and racing ability.

Ensuring good oral health in your greyhounds will support their ability to race well and promote wellbeing.

GRV recommends as part of your annual health check and vaccination (mandatory under the Code of Practice) you ask your veterinarian to check your greyhound’s teeth and undertake any necessary dental treatment and implement any oral health management recommended.

GRV also recommends you regularly provide greyhounds with raw bones to help them clean their teeth naturally.

Bones, particularly large marrow bones, are a great way to help with oral hygiene as well as offering enrichment. If you cannot provide large bones, then dental chews, dry dental kibble (not moistened), and tooth brushing are alternative oral care options. Your veterinarian may have specific suggestions for your greyhound.

Mr Guy pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a fine of $1500 with $1000 suspended. Jabba Bolt was disqualified from the event.

Stefano Cassar – VRT Hearing 15 April 2021 – (GAR) 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Deep Dive” free of any prohibited substance ‘Meloxicam’ for a event at Warrnambool on 10 September 2020. Mr Cassar pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a fine of $1500 with $500 suspended. Deep Dive was disqualified from the event.

Melanie Lithgow – VRT Appeal 22 April 2021 – GAR 69A(1), the greyhound “Gotham Duke” was charged with Fail To Chase at The Meadows on 17 April 2021. Mrs Lithgow pleaded ‘Not Guilty’. The VRT dismissed the appeal.

Brian Alford – VRT Hearing 30 April 2021 – (GAR) 83(1A) & 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Sad But True” free of any prohibited substance ‘Cobalt’ for an events at Sale on 6 September 2020. Mr Alford pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a 12mths suspension with 10mths suspended. Sad But True was disqualified from the event.

To assist participants with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au.

All sessions for the next 2 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month.

To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■

have a current C5 vaccination as per the specific GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS described on this page given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and

■

not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Racing Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org. au/retirement-from-racing.

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.

The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine.

Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually.

If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV.

Participants may be asked to provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. Note: there in no fee for greyhounds being entered into GAP. The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

Pen trials conducted after race meetings are required to be booked on the day by no later than race 8 via phone.

Satisfactory Trials are conducted following TAB race meetings. Trial sessions are subject to late change and weather conditions.
