Dear Reader, Let me welcome you to the first issue of Grey Matters! We are immensely excited and proud to bring you a magazine that deals with real life issues that no other magazine dares to. Grey Matters is about the things that really matter to real people in our town – new and old relationships, real life money issues, health and navigating the healthcare system, new blended families, aging parents, divorced children and the grandchildren, middle age sex, fashion for real women, and much, much more.
editor-in-chief, susannah pask
creative director/designer, fran sherman
We want to explore the things in your life that are really important to you. We won’t waste your time with fluff; we won’t have the real housewives of New Jersey on the cover or a celebrity we don’t really care about, we will deal with real life issues that we all face at our time of life. We’ll inspire and encourage you. We will give you advice and information. And above all, we’ll make you matter. Because, make no mistake about it, you do matter. You are strong, successful, smart and sophisticated. But you have been deliberately snubbed by other magazines – because you are over 40.
We’re going to change all that. We will bring you content that is relevant to you, we will profile your neighbors and the real world we live in. We promise you that you will not put Grey Matters down until you have read it from cover to cover and eagerly look forward to every issue because it will be about you. Finally, Grey Matters. On behalf of our Editor-in-Chief, Susannah Pask, our very talented Creative Director, Fran Sherman, my fantastic wife, Sherri Rothberg who had the original idea for this magazine, and Wayne Krebs my longtime friend and partner, let me say how thrilled we are to be talking to you. We are all over 40, coming into our prime and darn proud of it! Stay tuned—It’s going to be a fun ride.

she knows everything! A column by Doris Gross— everyone’s mother
Doris is 90 years young. Doris was married to Milton for 53 years. She has three sons, three wonderful daughtersin-law that she calls daughters - and seven great grandchildren. Doris swims for one hour every day and drives herself to the casino each week. Doris has owned her own business and has been the go-to person in her extended very large family for most of her life. She knows how to solve problems and has lived through it all. Doris relates to people as if they were old friends. She says exactly what she thinks and always adds a good measure of love and compassion to her advice. Whether your question is lifechanging or trivial, professional or personal, hilarious or depressing, or all of the above, expect straight talk, tough love, and the occasional war story from Doris. She knows everything. Direct your questions to doris@greymattersmagazine.net. Even if you’re not published you will get an answer from Doris.
Dear Doris, I am a divorcee with 2 teenagers. I met a man with 2 children in their 20s and 30s. Steve had very little contact with my kids until the relationship became more serious. Steve has proposed to me and my children are very unhappy. They had me all to themselves for the last 5 years and always had a problem with me dating. They say they don’t know him and aren’t comfortable around him. They are not interested in knowing his kids either. Steve is shy, the opposite of me. We have decisions to make over the next couple of months about where we will live and how we will blend our families. I’m happy with my decision to marry Steve, but the kids are trying to make me feel guilty. Doris, how do I foster a relationship between them and their future stepdad and help them move on and accept my happiness? Please help. Single and Lonely
Dear Single and Lonely, You are the mother of two immature teenagers who are afraid of change and view Steve as a threat. In a few years they will be away at college and, I hope, will have matured enough so that they no longer feel the need to “punish” you for not remaining single and at their disposal for eternity. You deserve to be happy The bottom line, however, is that you are the parent in that household. Your children do not have to “love” Steve, but they do have to treat him with respect and consideration. If love grows from that — terrific. If not, so be it. Doris where age is an att itude...

S
eason is about to start in Palm Beach County. Palm Beach County probably doubles in population with part-time residents coming for the season, kids coming home from college, tourists flocking to the warm weather for a chance to enjoy a much needed vacation from suburban life in the northeast and midwest. Schools are out for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year and it’s time to visit the grandparents in Florida. My kids and their kids arrive by car and plane to take up residence with us. The annual trip to the airport is here, the house is crowded; it’s a tumult but we enjoy every minute of it, at least temporarily. We go out to eat; we make family dinners and invite all our friends. It’s a very busy and exciting time. It’s a change for us, a chance to break out of the summer doldrums, start visiting with relatives and friends from up north and start partying again. But something’s missing...my parents. My parents died two months apart about 13 years ago. My mother couldn’t go on without my father. I’m 67 years old now and still miss them everyday. I feel like an orphan. I have a loving wife, great children and a bunch of grandchildren who love grandpa so much. But season is here again and I miss my parents. I just miss my dad, most of all. I miss the way I used to feel about my mom, too. They were wonderful kind-hearted people who loved everyone especially their kids and grandkids. They made me who I am by settting the example. I think I mostly miss being young when I felt protected and nurtured. My parents love was unconditional and unlimited and I miss that. Even when they got old and I became the parent they were still my mom and dad. I’m the dad now; the dad of the entire family. Maybe it’s my turn to take a back seat to my kids and just enjoy. I hope my kids will miss me as much as I miss my mom and dad. Season is here again in Palm Beach County along with the fun, friends and family.

A fashion makeover can give a boost to your self confidence. After dressing and looking the same for a long time, a big change can be just what you need to feel better about yourself
A
s the creator of Grey Matters Magazine, Sherri Rothberg has been working night and day preparing the premier edition. “There’s nothing else like it out there, so many people are excited to finally have a magazine dealing with real issues and information for their age group,” says Sherri. Needless to say, starting a new magazine is no easy task. Working 12-hour days may lend itself to the creation of a superior product, but it can wreak havoc on one’s personal appearance. So when it was time to pick a person to re-create for the makeover article, Sherri took a long look in the mirror and decided she was the perfect candidate. Although Sherri has amazing hair and was actually a professional hair model in her younger years, time had definitely taken its toll on her once-lustrous locks. Laying limp and lifeless down to her shoulders, her hair style made her look even more tired than she already felt. In addition she wasn’t wearing much makeup, and with another new role as caretaker of her new Grandson during the week, she was resigned to a wardrobe of jeans and flip flops riddled with baby spittle. So, as Sherri bravely took her infamous “before” photo (which she laughingly describes as her “mug shot”) she announced: “Let’s get the party started!”

About the Artist: ENRIQUE LUJAN Born in Lima, Peru and raised in Argentina, Enrique studied fine art in Spain. One day while walking in Mizner Park he noticed a crowd watching a photo shoot in front of a salon. Someone from the salon shouted out “our make up artist called in sick, and we’re desperate! He then asked Enrique if he was a artist and he said “Yes.” “Great!” the guy said. To which Enrique responded "I'm a painter, not a makeup artist". They begged him to try. He gave it a shot and he was hooked. When he left 4 women wanted him to do their makeup and the rest is history. He worked in Boca and went to Cosmetology school to get a certified Skin and Cosmetology license. Enrique now has his own studio at Boris International Salon. His cosmetics are from all over the world. He mixes products to come up with his own unique blends which can only be purchased through Enrique. He has done the make up for countless posters of models that can be seen in many of the salons in Boca.
Hair
About the Makeover: Analyze: First thing he analyzed was Sherri's skin which was normal to dry. He used a special skin care emulsion that he created that tightened, polished and moistened immediately. 2 Correct and conceal: Enrique concealed all dark areas including under the eyes, around the nose and lips."I feel like a therapist. When I make up women it makes them feel great about themselves". Like a great painter he works brighter and lighter to reduce the size of the nose and correct imperfections under the eyes. 3 Foundation: Although Sherri's natural skin color is light, Enrique chose a golden beige liquid formula that he sparsely used "because less is truly more". I never powder older women faces because it only dries their skin. His makeup is oil free so it doesn't need a powder. 4 Eyes: Sherri has deep set eyes. Enrique ‘s challenge was to give the illusion of spreading them out. A softer color of eye liner was applied. Any color that is applied sharply will only accentuate flaws. Enrique feels that eye shadow should be subtle according to the color of the eyes. Light color for base eye shadow which opens and lifts the eye. Contour eye shadow around the eye bone which elongates and creates depth. 5 Eyebrows: the eyebrows are contoured to accentuate and lift the whole eye area 6 Blush: Generally, as a rule the blush is applied as a contour. Blush should play with the lipstick color not match. 7 Lipstick: Knowing that Sherri was going to be wearing red for the shoot, Enrique naturally went with a warm red. If you are not wearing the appropriate makeup, red lipstick will destroy your look. "It is a loud color that needs to be singing the right song". The lip liner should contour the natural lip shape and be smoothed out with a lip brush, then apply lipstick with a brush. 1
Tell us WHY you should BE OUR DATE NITE MAKEOVER?
16
When a new client sits for a personal consultation, I begin by asking them how they feel about their look and what they'd like to accomplish. Sherri felt that she looked "washed out", and old fashioned and we agreed that her hair style was dragging her down. I wanted to create an age appropriate style yet something that would giver her a chic and current look. With that in mind, I did quite a bit of texturizing and point cutting which ultimately created a very sharp and edgy style with an up to date and youthful vibe. GM

Depression is tied to cardiovascular aging. In one study, men and women who had heart disease and depression had a 69 percent higher rate of death from heart disease than those who simply had heart disease and no depression. And in another study, depressed women were found to have lower bone density than those who weren’t depressed, presumably from high levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which was found in higher levels in the blood of depressed people. But perhaps the biggest factors are the indirect effects depression can have on aging. Depression leads to behaviors that accelerate the aging process. For example, depressed people are less likely to eat well, exercise, or take other actions to improve their health.

Family BY SUSAN COHEN-DICKLER
For many, the familiar phrase ‘home for the holidays’ conjures up iconic images of laughter-filled family dinners, tree trimming parties and maybe even a snowball fight or two. Or perhaps your holidays involve frying up latkes and playing the dreidel game.
W
hatever your celebration, if you are one of the many Baby Boomers living in the ever-growing world of blended families, your holiday picture may be far from perfect. But if you’re more like Ebenezer Scrooge than jolly old St. Nick when the holiday season approaches, you’re not alone.
According to Census Bureau statistics, divorce is another area where the over-achieving Baby Boomer generation excels. While just one-third of married adults in the previous two generations experienced divorce, almost half of all married Boomers, 46% have already divorced. The result is that blended families, with two adults that have been widowed or divorced and have at least one child, are one of the fastest growing segments in the U.S. But don’t throw out those ornaments quite

yes and don’t over-spike the egg nog (well, you might still want to do that) because here are some ideas that will help you put the “ho-hoho” back into your holidays. PRACTICE NOT BEING PERFECT. I know,I know, we’re Baby Boomers, we’re perfectionists. It’s in the Boomer handbook. But practice does not make for a perfect holiday with everyone having their own idea Continued on next page

of their dream celebration. So the answer is to not even try. “What?”, I can hear your perfectionist self shrieking. Just stop downloading that new “Celebrate the Holidays” iPad app and listen up. Let’s start with the food. Ask everyone to write down their perfect holiday meal from appetizer to dessert. Then make one item from each menu. Your guests will each get something they want and everyone will be excited to see what’s for dinner. MAKING A LIST AND CHECKING THE PRICE. Yes, I said price. Unfortunately holidays can cause jealousy between parents and step-parents. If one buys an extremely expensive gift that the other can’t afford, it can lead to hurt feelings all around. So once your child has made their list, have a conversation with your ex, without your child. Decide who’s going to get what and set a price limit. That way neither parent will be naughty and your gift-giving will be nice. I’M DREAMING OF A HOT CHRISTMAS. If you don’t even get to see your child every holiday, why not try Christmas in July? Then your child can enjoy their holiday in December and you can relax knowing that you’ll have your chance to celebrate, too, just a little later. This has the added benefit, not to be overlooked, of double the presents. Hopefully these suggestions will help you through what can be a difficult time. Just remember, it’s more important for your child to be happy than for you to be right. Try taking a break from perfectionism. You might like it! GM

The Layman’s Guide to

EstatePlanning By Carlton Buller
Life is wonderful. You’ve realized most if not all of your dreams. You own a beautiful home in one of the best zip codes. The kids are grown and gone. You’re traveling, enjoying your new found freedom and experiencing the most peace and tranquility you can remember. But since returning from your recent Caribbean cruise something has been nagging at you. What if you suddenly became incapacitated? How would your assets be managed? And what about their disposition after you’ve passed away?
T
here is an easy way to restore your peace of mind. It’s called estate planning—an ongoing process that should be started as soon as you have a measurable asset base. Failure to engage in this process can cause undue financial burdens to your children, since estate taxes can exceed 40%. Most estate plans are set up with the help of an attorney experienced in the estate and tax laws of your particular state, as well as federal taxation laws. At a minimum you should include two important instruments: a durable power of attorney and a will. The first alleviates your concern about becoming incapacitated by providing for management of your property. The second ensures management and distribution of your assets, according to your wishes, after your death. But an increasing number of Americans are also utilizing revocable (living) trusts to avoid probate (the costly, cumbersome, legal process of administering transfer of your assets) and
www.greymattersmagazine.com
manage their estates while alive and after they are gone. With this type of instrument you maintain complete control over the trust. Therefore, you can amend or terminate it at will. In other words, you can take the funds back out of the trust at anytime prior to your death. Your estate plan should provide the maximum amount of wealth possible for your beneficiaries and give you the most flexibility while you are still alive. Your estate is the total property you own (real and personal) that hasn’t been distributed through a trust or will. Real property is real estate. And personal property is everything else, including bank accounts, household items, cars, etc.. With proper estate planning you can continue experiencing peace and prosperity for the rest of your life. And you will be able to rest assured that your property will be transferred to your loved ones with minimal fuss and expense after you have passed on. GM
Some major estate planning tasks are: 3Creating a medical directive (health
care proxy, durable power of attorney for healthcare, living will, medical instructions) 3Creating a last will and testament division of assets among your heirs) 3Naming an executor of the estate to oversee the terms of the will. 3Setting up trust accounts in the name of the beneficiaries to limit estate taxes.) 3Establishing a guardian for living dependents 3Purchasing life insurance 3Creating/updating beneficiaries on life insurance policies, IRAs and 401ks, etc. 3Setting up durable power of attorney to direct other assets & investments 3Establishing annual gifting to reduce your taxable estate 3Making funeral arrangements

New York City plastic surgeon, Dr. Matthew Schulman, has developed a procedure to help women with “turkey neck” and a sagging jawline without going under the knife. This is a common problem as women age, because the skin in the neck area is very thin. He uses a laser to melt the fat and then extracts it with traditional liposuction. Afterwards, he uses the same laser to tighten the skin, then another external laser to boost collagen production and improve the skin’s elasticity over time.

ew research raises doubts about a study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, healthy women in their late 50s and early 60s who took resveratrol supplements showed no improvement in factors linked to developing diabetes and heart disease. The finding suggests that resveratrol supplements do not benefit healthy people, says researcher Samuel Klein, MD, who directs the Washington University Center for Human Nutrition. "There is no evidence that taking these supplements leads to better health in this population," he says.
Sunblock Dangers E
verybody knows about the dangers of NOT using sun block, but what about the dangers of using sun block? Unfortunately, the vast majority of sun screen products in the U.S. include chemicals that have been linked to cancer and other medical issues. Some sunscreens actually contain ingredients that accelerate the growth of skin cancers which actually increases the chances of getting skin cancer. Four out of five of the most popular sunscreens ingredients have been banned in European countries because they have been found to be potent carcinogens. A new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that 97% of Americans are contaminated with a widely-used sunscreen ingredient called oxybenzone that has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage.

Anti-Aging Products by Francesca Page
Tired of emptying your purse for hyped – up face creams that never deliver? Beauty Editor, Francesca Page, picks four of her favorites that live up to their promise.
Estee Lauder Overnight Skin Repair, $85 In my opinion, this true gem of a product gives silk itself a run for its money. This elixir is has been the number one skin recovery product for the last five years running from Vogue to Elle Magazines, and never leaves my handbag. The intensive boosting serum frees your skin from the visible accumulation of excessive damage and helps repair the visible effects of this accumulation.

Shu-uemura Depsea Hydrability Intense Moisturizing Concentrate, $78
Meaningful Beauty Line Diffuser Wrinkle Soothing Capsules, Cindy Crawford, $36.95
Shu-Uemura is one brand that never fails to produce outstanding quality products. While best known for their makeup, this skincare item is at the top of my anti-aging list. As an intensely hydrating serum, it reduces dullness and plumps skin using the key ingredients of Aquatoril, glycerin, and hylauronic acid microspheres (moisturizers).
Cindy Crawford isn’t doing badly these days with her skincare range. This little silver jar of anti-aging serum helps to considerably to reduce the appearance of fine lines whilst moisturizes skin, which both moisturize and stimulate collagen production. I myself love the satin velvet to touch and fragrance free composition of her serum, with each capsule containing just enough for one use, so it lasts that little bit longer!
Lancôme High Resolution, Refill 3x, $78 Lancome’s anti-aging cream with SPF 15 is the ‘go to’ for battling lines by moisturizing and stimulates the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Luscious and creamy the formula absorbs quickly and works immediately to firm and fill with the gentlest of ease, leaving you smooth to touch.

Man! The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that cosmetic surgical procedures for men are fueling an industry resurgence right now. In fact, male cosmetic procedures in the US are up an astonishing 120% in 2011 vs. 1997 representing over 800,000 procedures!

EMBARRASSING “LOVE HANDLES”
In an effort to get rid of “love handles” more than 41,000 men underwent lipoplasty in 2011, according to the ASPS, a 14% increase from the previous year. A typical male patient, Stephen, interviewed by the LA Times in a recent article, described his embarrassment about wearing a t-shirt prior to his procedure. “I couldn’t get rid of the fat. I tried diets. I walked 5 days a week and worked out three, but it just accumulated and I couldn’t get rid of it.” Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) for men is increasing. The ASPS reports that 23,000 eyelid surgeries were performed on men in 2011, up 6% over the previous year. Eyelid and abdominal surgery are popular because the eyelids and midsection are among the first parts of the body to show signs of age - and the most difficult to remedy without surgery. Whereas breast augmentation is a favorite procedure for women, the opposite is true for men, of course. Breast reduction surgery for men is increasing as men are realizing that those humiliating, fatty breasts can be eliminated for a sexier look.
AVERAGE JOE
So what types of man is getting these procedures done? Doctors report treating all types of men, from bankers and stockbrokers to mechanics and construction workers. We expect Wall Street tycoons and rock stars to opt for cosmetic procedures, but these days the typical male patient is an average guy, nearing retirement age, who has the financial means to make a change in his outward appearance. An aging, affluent baby boom population comprises a large percentage of those choosing cosmetic surgery. According to the 2011 International Study of Cosmetic Surgery Procedures, “people ages 35-64 account for 71% of all cosmetic procedures in the U.S. 57 year old Joe Marek, a typical “average Joe” patient of Dr. Stephen Baker, MD from Washington, DC, put it this way. “I didn’t feel that old. I felt young. I was working out. I was pretty active and wanted to look like I felt inside.” His girlfriend supported the decision wholeheartedly.
GO FOR IT!
The bottom line is: plastic surgery procedures are commonplace these days. If you want to make a change in your appearance, men, go for it! There is neither stigma nor embarrassment attached to improving your looks. Many men, after divorce or the death of a spouse, or at a particular time in their lives have found it to be a refreshing, life-affirming change that helps them feel better. GM

Starting the
Next NextC While some people sail through life without a course correction, many others stop, look around, and re-evaluate their position, searching for a new direction, a new purpose, a new destination. While it seems like an increasingly common process, the search for a new chapter in life’s journey is not a new one, as the following story shows.
I
n 1845, a Massachusetts man, tired of his job and the life he was leading, like millions of middle-aged Americans today, asked himself,“What’s next?” He had been a schoolteacher for a while, and spent years in the family business making pencils, and he needed a change. He wanted something more out of life, as he later wrote, “to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”
38
Henry Thoreau’s trip to the woods at Walden Pond not only changed his life immensely, but the writing he did in its aftermath, such as Walden and Civil Disobedience, changed literary history and ultimately human history, as they inspired the abolitionist movement and the eventual end of slavery, the independence movement in India and its leader, Mohandas Gandhi, and the civil rights movement in the U.S. and its leader, Martin Luther King Jr. Many Americans will continue to teach or make pencils, of course, but many others will change directions, some because the schools and pencil factories are laying off or closing down,
and some because they want to, as Thoreau did, learn more about what life has to teach. Few of us, these days, can get away from life and spend a couple years in the woods—there are far fewer woods these days, as well as many more people, but fortunately, we have more options than Thoreau did, and thanks to Thoreau, more sages to guide us. One of those sages deeply inspired by Thoreau is writer Jon Kabat Zinn. In his book, Wherever You Go, There You Are, Zinn suggests that Thoreau’s main lesson is not in going to the woods, but in paying attention to your immediate surroundings, wherever you may be.

The value of our life experience resides in what we learn in the process.”
“Mindfulness” is the term Zinn uses to orientate yourself and determine the direction in which you should be going. While Thoreau’s “living deliberately” and Zinn’s “mindfulness” are interesting but abstract, Dan Millman has done the math and come up with the hard numbers. In his 2011 book, The Four Purposes in Life, Millman proposes that those looking for a new direction address one or more of these four specific goals: learning life’s lessons, finding your career and calling, fulfilling your hidden life path, and attending to present moment, thereby www.greymattersmagazine.net
updating Thoreau by suggesting that the lessons of Walden can be learned anywhere. Millman, the author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior, further specifies 12 required lessons from what he calls “the school of life.” Millman explains,“The value of our life experience resides in what we learn in the process.” Of course, the wisdom of the ages no longer resides only in dead tree format. If you’re looking for new directions, the Internet will provide plenty. You could spend the rest of your life just reading about new directions to take on the Web. Millman himself has
two websites, www.peacefulwarrior. com, and www.dailyom.com, one with a four-minute daily workout program and another with a twelveweek course designed to help you “live with your head in the clouds and your feet on the ground.” Most of the writings of Thoreau can be found at http://thoreau.eserver.org/. Not to be outdone, Zinn has a website at http:// www.jonkabat-zinn.com/. Whether you may find direction for your next chapter in life at Walden Pond, the World Wide Web, or within yourself, it’s up to you to begin writing it. History could depend upon it. GM

Age is but a number, no more relevant to its usage than seven is to 7-Up or thousand is to 1000 Island Dressing. Still, we can’t help but be hung up on it. Some fight it, some deny it and others do it with grace. Model, actress, entrepreneur, mom and all around super cool lady, Belinda Johnson, most definitely falls into the latter category. She’s not only 55; she’s 55 and proud of it. Not just because she looks fabulous, but because she’s lived, she’s learned, she’s had the rug pulled from under her, she’s survived and, yes, she’s flourished.

ooking past her external beauty and into her eyes, there’s a tranquility behind them that hasn’t always been there. It’s come with a whole lot of pain and a whole lot of healing — physically, emotionally and mentally. At 40, she had it all. Two children, a beautiful home, and what she “thought was an unbelievable, amazing marriage,” as she puts it. “And then everything was taken away,” she confesses.“I turned 40 and I had a party. Everything was wonderful. But moments after that, everything was destroyed and I didn’t know what to do. I started seeing a therapist and trying to get help to go through it. He used to give me this comparison of Hillary Clinton, ‘If Hillary was here, what would you say?’” she laughs. “I was,‘I’m TIRED of talking to her! “When you’re going through a divorce and you realize your life is over as it was, what do you do?” she asked herself.“I had my children and hadn’t modeled for years. I wasn’t that hot young girl with the perfect body anymore. I had become so thin and not well. I had to get better before I could walk through those doors again, and I knew it.” Working through depression and the physical toll it took on her body was further exasperated by the death of her sister, who lost her fight with cancer.“My sister refused to listen when it came to her health problems,” Belinda says.“As I watched her die, I promised her I’d tell every woman out there to have your blood checked every year.” And so Belinda’s healing began. Having been out of the work force for five years while raising her girls, Belinda hit the pavement and, slow but sure, her modeling and acting careers picked up speed. Television guest spots, dozens of national commercials and a whole lot of print work began to gather steam. Fast-forward a decade and more life lessons than Belinda can count. With the help of a healer, a life coach and two loving and devoted daughters, she was practically a new woman, so much so that when the big 5-0 rolled around, she found herself in another quandary.“When I turned 50, I had a difficult time,” she admits.“I was feeling OLD because if you think it, you are. And I was thinking it. I had to figure out what I was going to do with my life.” It was more than that, though. She wanted to do something with meaning.“I believe that when you get to a certain age in your life, it’s time to start giving,” Belinda says.“I had been given so many gifts of love and support. The right people came into my life, teaching me how to make the right choices. I love helping people any way I can. People would say, ‘Make money doing that.’ But I thought, why should I be making money off of something like that if I’m just helping someone? That’s what you’re supposed to be doing! If we don’t help each other, how are we going to survive?” After lots of soul searching, she came up with a plan — a , well, she credits that series to educate and aide men to good genes… and a trick or two up her sleeve. Omega 3 supplements and women about how to live a and aloe vera juice work from the inside out to boost the immune healthier life.“If you just take the system, lubricate joints and invigorate the skin. “I gulp down the aloe time to help another person, it vera juice as fast as I can and then chug water afterwards because it’s so changes your life. An InsIde Look At A HeALtHy WAy of LIfe WItH RestAuRAteuR, BuRt RApopoRt And WIfe, RoBIn. ith increasingly fast-paced schedules, it’s common practice in South Florida to go out to dinner three, four or even five times per week. While this trend can weigh down on the wallet, restaurateurs are finding alternatives to make it light on the scale. “No bun,” “Hold the butter,” “Dressing on the side,” “Can I substitute that side for a salad?” are frequent requests of dieting diners looking for
healthier substitutes to watch their waistlines. Solution: create a menu that provides a variety of healthy, low calorie, gluten free and nutritious selections. With his new “Eat Well. Be Well” menu, Burt Rapoport of Rapoport’s Restaurant Group has done just that. Dedicated to providing high-quality cuisine in a warm and welcoming atmosphere with truly attentive service at all of his restaurants, Burt Rapoport has redefined
the South Florida dining landscape. A long time veteran in the restaurant industry with numerous successful concepts, Rapoport, owner and president of Rapoport’s Restaurant Group, currently operates more restaurant seats in South Palm Beach County than any other restaurateur. A successful restaurateur and businessman would not be complete without his righthand lady - Robin and Burt Rapoport met on a blind date in New York City in 2004.

Mixing business and pleasure, they spent their first date mingling with 10 of Burt’s chefs and managerial staff. With a mutual passion for travel, exploring new cuisines and flavors, and living life to the fullest, Robin and Burt’s passion for life has carried through to each of Rapoport’s current restaurants. Treating their staff more like family than employees, Rapoport’s has implemented incentive programs to encourage staff to work towards a goal. New York, Napa Valley and Chicago are just a few examples of past trips the staff and chefs have had the opportunity to enjoy. Working toward their own goal of living a healthy lifestyle has influenced the addition of a new health conscious menu recently introduced at three of Rapoport’s locations, Bogart’s Bar & Grille, Henry’s and Deck 84, and will be implemented at

Both Burt and Robin work out an average of five times a week, enjoying everything from strength training and spinning to yoga. Burt is an avid swimmer and, from time to time, they both enjoy challenging outdoor biking trips when on vacation. The pomegranate can thank antioxidents for its passion power. Antioxidents protect the lining of the blood vessels, allowing more blood to go through them to increase genital sensitivity.
Did you know that certain foods can have a positive effect on our libido and can enhance love-making?
Peppers
RED HOT! A chemical found in peppers called capsaicin increases circulation to get the blood pumping and stimulate nerve endings.

Bananas
Bananas deliver potassium, a key nutrient to muscle strength, giving your orgasm(s) extra intensity. Bananas contain the bromelain enzyme, which is believed to increase libido and reverse impotence in men.
Celery
Celery may not be the first food that comes to mind when you’re thinking sex, however, it contains androsterone, an odorless hormone also released through male perspiration, which turns women on.
Avocado
The Aztecs call the avacado tree “ Ahuacatl,” or “Testicle tree.”Avacados contain folic acid, which helps motabolize proteins, giving you more energy. They also contain vitamin B6 (a nutrient that increases male hormone production) and potassium ( which helps regulate a woman’s thyroid gland), elements that help libido in both sexes.
Raw Oysters
The classic aphrodisiac! This shellfish has a reputation as a “virility food.” Oysters are high in zinc which raises sperm and testosterone production, essential for men’s reproduction function. If you eat them raw, be sure they’re from uncontaminated waters, or your evening could turn REALLY nasty!
Garlic
Yes, you might need to stock up on some extra breath mints, but it will be worth it. Garlic contains alliicin, an ingredient that increases blood flow to the sexual organs. As such, it is a highly effective herb to help increase libido.
Chocolate
Besides the fact that it is the surest way to a woman’s heart, chocolate also contains theobromine-an alkaloidthat is very similar to caffeine. It also contains phenylethylamine, a chemical believed to produce the feeling of “being in love.” Dark chocolate has anti-oxidents, which help maintain the immune system. GM

booksmatter The Corrections by: Jonathan Franzen
W
inner of the 2001 National Book Award for Fiction and 2002 James Tait Black Memorial Award for fiction, Jonathan Franzen’s brilliant social criticism “The Corrections” plunges the unsuspecting reader into a swirling commentary on contemporary American life in the guise of a troubled, multigenerational family. Albert, the father, is suffering from
Parkinson’s and early dementia, while his frustrated wife, Enid, is looking forward to letting down her hair a little. They have three “loser” children, whose lives reflect different levels of failure. Can they get actually together to celebrate the holidays? Franzen, a contributor at The New Yorker, famously dared to thumb his nose at Oprah for selecting The Corrections for her book club and was criticized for being a literary snob. Yet, critics have put this book on a level with Bleak House or Buddenbrooks. It’s certainly one of the most important literary
works of the decade. HBO seriously considered turning it into a mini-series, though that will now not happen. Perhaps Franzen felt HBO was not sufficiently highbrow. Is it The Great American Novel? Who knows, but it’s a masterpiece, full of texture and dimension. Though the subject matter is black, the book is anything but depressing. If you haven’t read it yet, you must - if only to be able to impress people at your next social gathering.

In addition, they examine the ways that people can control which aging processes start at which point in their lives by examining specific behavior relating to diet and exercise, controlling bad habits and, ultimately bad

Fathers are great parents too! by Shoshana
Why is it that the media loves to play up the idea of “deadbeat dads”? Where did this come from?

C
ontrary to popular belief, dads can be excellent parents, regardless of the situation with the mother. According to parenting experts and psychologists, it is vital to children’s well-being, even selfesteem that both parents are actively involved in their care, because building trusting relationships with responsible adults is one of the life’s most important building blocks. Trusting relationships are built day-by-day, slowly, over time, through small acts and caring moments, through sharing of beliefs, through weathering frustrating failures and setbacks. Because being part of the child’s life, watching the day-by-day successes, bumps and triumphs is the mortar that binds parents and children together as family. Regardless of whether parents live together, are married or not every child needs to know his or her father, needs their father to be someone who can care for them, who likes to be with them, who accepts them, who respects them, and who they can hug, talk to, argue with, play with and depend on - someone they are loved by and whom they can love.

The mother is rarely portrayed as the manipulator and true reason why some children do not get to spend time with their fathers. Why? So someday, we won’t think or behave as if fathers are less important to children’s growth or less capable as caretakers. So someday, we’ll just think of fathers as parents. So someday, we’ll teach children that what matters most is respect and regard for others - and yourself and that gender does not limit the capacity to love and nurture. Society stipulates that dads face a far worse time in divorce court than moms. We see the child torn between the two parents as mom manipulates them into believing that dad is the inferior parent, despite any attempts to prove otherwise. We also see moms dictating dad’s visits. The mother is rarely portrayed as the manipulator and true reason why some children do not get to spend time with their fathers. If you feel you are not getting the advice and support you need as a dad facing divorce, there are many websites and chat rooms you can access to help you out - or put you in touch with other dads going through the same thing. thought I was a good parent but…..My wife and I decided to have two children. Why because that was a good number. We had a boy and a girl. There was no internet and no instruction book. We just did what our parents before us did and what our friends were doing now. The main instruction we had was Dr. Seuss and Sesame Street. So we had two kids and started raising them with the same values our parents instilled in us. We loved our children unconditionally, we hugged and kissed them and showed our affection in so many ways. We never criticized or belittled them and we made them the center of our lives. As the kids grew we had many family events, birthday parties, vacations and did all the things that parents do with
parentingmatters their kids. We gave them music lessons and religious lessons, we sponsored little league teams, gave them swimming lessons and you name it. We sat up many nights to do homework or a school project. My wife and I attended every school event and parent teacher conference and always thought our kids were the brightest and the best. We instilled confidence, gave them accolades and praise and taught them to be good people. Our kids were great, we were a happy, even a model family. Then they became teenagers and being a parent became complicated and more difficult. We were not the primary influence that affected our kids’ lives anymore. There was the outside world that was out of our control. TV, internet, friends, texting, Facebook, school, peer pressure, alcohol and drugs.

Suddenly my kids were their own people. I could suggest, sometimes I could insist but there was a narrow line to walk if I wanted to maintain an open relationship with them. I needed to give them my love, respect and trust. I couldn’t prevent my kids from making mistakes. I worried about them driving, I worried about them experimenting with drugs, after all, I did. I mostly worried about that phone call or knock on the door in the middle of the night that thank God never came. There were some trials and tribulations along the way but my kids grew up to be fine adults and now they have kids of their own. I thought I was a good parent but, I’m not done yet. We will always be parents no matter how old our kids are.

How do you know
who you
really are? Do you really have a good idea of who you are? You may describe yourself to others by telling them your profession, and about other roles you play in life, such as being a parent, but if these aspects of your life were stripped away, you would still be you. In other words, the roles you play do not define you as a person. The real you is not dependent on roles or role playing.

ike most people, you probably gain security from feeling you have a sense of who you are. Being able to tell people you are a lawyer, teacher or caregiver for example, can help them understand what type of person you might be. However, people can only assume that you have certain qualities by hearing about the roles you play, and cannot truly know the inner you from this information Only by digging deeper can you get a true picture of who you are. Rather than looking at yourself two dimensionally through the description of what a father, drifter, entrepreneur or any other label other people may give you is, look at your qualities. Perhaps you are sensitive, kind and reflective, or outgoing, talkative and ambitious. Alternatively, maybe you do not fit either description. You can further discover the real you by looking at your behavior. Perhaps you are a survivor who has struggled to come out on top of life despite odds being stacked against you, or you are a loner who enjoys quiet reflection and pays attention to detail. Examine what you do that is not necessarily part of your job and may not relate to any other role you play. You will find out more about yourself by looking at how you act, and have behaved in the past, than you will by looking at your job description.
www.greymattersmagazine.net
Next time someone tries to find out more about you at a social gathering, refrain from describing yourself by your profession, marital status or whether you have children. What you say is more likely to reflect who you truly are once you drop using roles to describe yourself. When you begin to see the real you your sense of self will improve, and you will be able to cope in a healthy manner if any roles are stripped away from you. People can be devastated when an important role they played in life is gone. Losing a job or getting divorced for example, can be especially painful for them because they imagine that part of what makes them who they are is missing. Such life events will always be difficult, but they are less likely to leave you depressed, if they happen to you, when you can gain strength in the knowledge that you exist beyond the labels people give you and the roles you play. f you find yourself weighed down with too many worries and responsibilities, your first step is to analyze what is causing the excessive strain, Anything from a bad relationship to poor health can be the causes for your high stress level. If you watch too much bad news on television, the news could cause you to feel depressed. If you are burdened under a great deal of debt, your life will not be a happy one. One of the principle reasons why many simply cannot cope with the stresses of life is that they believe they have no control over what and how they think. They feel powerless. fear, anger and resentment. That doesn’t imply that you can only find peace by refusing to live up to your responsibilities. Controlling stress means taking action. If you’re swimming in debt, you need to address it in the best way possible. You can’t run away from your responsibility. But once you do something, no matter how small, you relieve your stress level. You open up yourself to seeing possibilities instead of endless trouble. Most people expect smooth sailing from life. When that doesn’t happen they become frustrated. In order to better cope, you need to realize that as long as you breathe, you will experience many problems. You need to accept life as it is and not what you think it should be. Those who fail to accept this truth try to hide themselves from stressful situations through alcohol, overeating, sex and other destructive behaviors. So what can you do to better cope with stress? The first order of business is to analyze your diet. If you’re not eating the right foods, you create an imbalance of chemicals within both the mind and body. Many of today’s diseases are the result of eating a diet of highly processed junk foods which

cannot keep your body and mind in healthy balance. Once you know what foods to avoid and change your diet, you’ll have better mental clarity that will help you cope with the stress of daily activity. Your body is designed to be active. Blood can circulate to carry oxygen to the remote parts of the body that are the first to die from oxygen deprivation. Getting exercise outdoors helps to build strength, endurance and stimulates thought patterns to you can cope better Habits are easy to form, but difficult to break. If you’re a smoker, a heavy user of drugs, or if you don’t get enough sleep, you are setting up the conditions that lead to high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Getting rid of unhealthy habits will help you handle your stress level. The hectic pace of life today doesn’t leave much room for clear thinking. But being constantly on the go works against you as you have no time to really think of permanent solutions to your nagging problems. The act of rest and periodic relaxation is not a waste of time. Those who succeed in life take frequent breaks to meditate, pray or simply relax. They use the power of their minds during relaxation to solve issues and relieve. Better stress management leads to a healthier skin, hair and life. There simply is no problem too large that can’t be solved. So take the time to control your thoughts and feelings. You’ll get far more done in a shorter time and bring you better peace of mind. GM

Liposuction: Now more than just a cosmetic surgical procedure
D Before
o you have painful, degenerative knees and/or hips? Are you suffering from chronic obstructive lung disease? Are you one in 3 Americans who are obese? For the first time in medical history, cosmetic surgeons may move from purely treating patients for appearance to treating patients with many common medical problems. How? However, the most exciting development has been the isolation of stem cells from a person’s own fat! 25cc of concentrated fat (yellow gold) will yield 10-30 million stem cells. Once isolated, these cells may be injected directly into painful, degenerated joints, given IV for systemic effect, inhaled with a nebulizer, mixed with fat for enhanced grafting or injected directly into soft tissues that show damage.
After
After
In 1983 liposuction was introduced in this country from France. Since then, it has become the most popular and safe cosmetic operation for any surgery of appearance. More recently, liposuction has slowly evolved form a purely cosmetic to a medical treatment. The most obvious is the SLABS (sequential liposuction and body sculpting) procedure developed at the Gardens Cosmetic Center for obesity. Under local anesthesia, while adhering to the guidelines of the Florida Board of Medicine, patients have multiple staged (sequential) treatments where up to four liters of fat can safely be removed each time. Skin tightening occurs during the healing. Furthermore, there are none of the sequelae of gastric bypass surgery with electrolyte imbalance, dumping syndrome, skin laxity etc. (see photo). As the weight is lost, high blood pressure becomes more manageable, adult onset diabetes is improved and the patients self esteem is enhanced.

Who are candidates for these fat derived stem cells? Patients who have painful knees and/or hips can receive joint injections of the stem cells and their components. Patients who have chronic lung disease can get an IV treatment as well as direct inhalation via a nebulizer. Auto immune diseases are beginning to show results as well. Furthermore, cosmetic patients who receive fat grafting will similarly benefit by mixing their fat with a high concentration of their own stem cells. Who are not candidates? Any patient with active cancer, infection or blood thinners should not receive this treatment. What are the results? In order to be able to offer these type of treatments, The Florida Stem Cell Center is an affiliate of the California Stem Cell Treatment Center and as such is participating in their IRB approved (FDA registered) studies. There has been about an 80% response rate with decrease pain and increased mobility in the orthopedic patients. The chronic lung patients are seeing an increase in pulmonary function and a decrease dependency on oxygen. Other similar improvements in patients with neurologic problems including multiple sclerosis and neuropathies have been improved. Elegance palm beach
Palm Beach County boasts
some of the most beautiful homes in the country, and in this issue we decided to give you a sneak peek into a home recently re-designed by William R. Eubanks Interior Design, Inc. This magnificent condominium overlooks the beach on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach and was a collaborative effort between the owners and designer in which colors and textures pull the feeling of sand, sun, sea and sky indoors. Comfortable elegance is the goal of this stunning project, and from architectural drawings created by William R. Eubanks Interior Design, Inc. to arrangement of bibelots, the entire home projects a sense of a cohesive whole, so all of the rooms are used for private living and public entertaining.

The addition to this home’s central axis of 18th-century architectural moldings designed by William R. La Posada Offers Peace of Mind NOW AND IN THE FUTURE
Y
ou’ve heard the saying, “Good things come to those who wait.” That may be true if you’re growing flowers or making wine, but it’s not so true when you’re choosing a retirement community in which to spend your golden years. Waiting until you actually need assisted living or skilled nursing services can be a costly mistake, especially for those who do not have long term care insurance. A Metlife survey estimated the average cost of skilled nursing care-- on a national basisruns between $6,500 and $9,500 per month. Learning about the various options available to you now and planning while you are still independent can eliminate the burden placed on family members to make these important decisions for you later on. Continuing care retirement communities like La Posada are growing in popularity among seniors and especially couples who want peace of mind and financial security that come with lifetime access to assisted living, memory support and skilled nursing care, all of which are included if and when you need them. At the La Posada, Palm Beach Gardens

They live in gorgeous apartment homes and villas ranging from 810 to 2600 square feet and take advantage of magnificent clubhouse offering fine dining, concierge services, five-star amenities and programs like “Masterpiece Living” that promote successful aging. Egyptian style jewelry is big news right now, and that means gold. Jewelry collections full of chunky gold bangles and cuffs, sophisticated pendant earrings, and snake jewelry, are bringing opulent glamour to women’s outfits.

his sun kissed jewelry takes many forms and comes in degrees of boldness. Whether you want to go all the way and style yourself on Cleopatra, or just bring a hint of the Egyptian queen into your wardrobe, there’s something to suit everyone. Perhaps the extreme of this look is double gold cuffs and large gold collars. Collars form a circle of gold, traditionally laid on the breastbone, and fan out in a golden, sun-like effect. Cuffs can be shiny gold or mottled and with a ‘beaten’ look, but all are thick and broad and cover the wrist entirely. The idea of wearing that much gold in such chunky jewelry can be a little daunting, but the look is sophisticated and teams well with plain, simple clothing. Not so extreme is the ornate gold snake jewelry, particularly the bangles which should be worn tight on the upper arm to get the full Egyptian look. These bangles, winding around the flesh with a snake’s head peaking out as if to attack, are certainly not subtle, but they can be pretty and delicate. Usually seen with colored jewels for eyes and jewel encrusted or engraved gold bodies, snake jewelry also comes in rings and necklaces. Necklaces can be either pendants of hissing snakes or chokers of one or more coiled around the neck. A tight snake choker works well with a little black dress. With golden, jeweled snakes writhing around your neck, you’ll definitely get noticed! Earrings are long, shoulder grazing drops, which will elongate the neck and give your look a Nefertiti elegance. These earrings come in a variety of styles, but gold and long are the main criteria. Designs are mostly stacked gold pieces, with straight lines and bricklike uniformity, interlocking with turquoise and amethyst. Some earrings feature a free, feminine style with discs and ‘belly dancing’ designs. Many also display typical Egyptian images of cats. Egyptian inspired jewelry is glamorous and makes a gold statement. This jewelry is bigger and brighter than most other designs and the look is certainly not shy. But if you are looking for sumptuous golden jewelry with an ancient appeal, Egyptian jewelry is right on. GM
