study abroad - architecture in asia grgr yturner@gmail.com
Asian cultures and lifestyles have been an interest of mine since I was a little child. The density of civilians has forced Asians to think in a completely different way when it comes to their architecture. The overgrown, large open spaces in which we inhabit here in the United States simply is not an option in most places throughout Asia. The small compact, open layout floorplans have been a necessity for Asians. There seems to be no wasted space, no waste of material, and no waste of lifestyle. In a sense, these close knit spaces actually have forced Asians to interact with one another, where the American way of using space has encouraged a more private and closed off lifestyle. Given the opportunity, I would love to study architecture throughout Asia to develop a better understanding of how their lifestyles and population really have affected the space in which they live. The architecture throughout Asia is seen much differently than any other country or area around the world and I believe looking into their process of form and space could easily translate to a better standard of living here in the United States. With the Asian sense of space and our sense and power of leading technology, we could potentially move to the forefront of the architectural world. Finally, upon coming to the University of Kansas I found a major interest in the study abroad program in Asia and knew this was the place for me when my time came to study abroad. this study abroad option is especially a major interest of mine considering we are given the opportunity to study alongside fellow architectural students in Asia. nothing can replace real world experience and if given the opportunity to study abroad in Asia, and develop a strong sense of how the people in Asia really organize and develop space will truly be an irreplaceable experience. I would like to thank you for taking the time to consider me in this option and hope to be hearing from you shortly with your decision.

retail plan retail intentions the two outer retail parcels are intended to be used for restaurant space allowing for outdoor covered dining spaces under cantilevered floors and patios overhead. the outdoor space will provide for elegant dining with the surrounding landscape and intimate lighting above. each unit is surrounded by full height storefront units which allow for plenty of natural daylighting while customers are enjoying their meal. the three inner retail parcels are intended for the use of retail spaces. these spaces characterize a longitudinal layout providing for plenty of storage space in the rear of the unit and plenty of naturally lit space in the front of the unit. parking for the site is seperated into two sectors, one for customers to the east of the building and a gated section to the west of the building for tenants.

The growing population of the elderly community in Lawrence, Kansas has forced designers to think about aging generation. With the life expectancy increasing at a rapid rate, the need for elderly care facilities has become more and more popular and with the baby- boomer generation approaching there will be no down time in this area. This means, designers need to begin to think about the needs of the elderly and consider developing healthier and safer environments for these citizens instead of placing them into nursing homes where activities are not a high priority. Designs need to begin to focus more on the interactive activities, exercise, social development, and memory enhancing activities.

GMT & Partners has developed an elderly care facility just south of downtown Lawrence, which they focused on human interaction and the outdoor/indoor living environment connection while maintaining a high quality of living of independence in the residents private units. GMT & Partners had a number of goals they wanted to achieve in developing this facility, one was placing strong views facing east towards the street where the residents will receive the most indirect interaction of outdoor space. These views not only allow residents to see passer-bys but be able to see anybody approaching the building which tends to be something that elderly people appreciate the most because they know that someone is coming to visit.
There are a number of things to help keep the resident’s mind stimulated, first is the overhang surrounding three sides of the building, which not only provides protection from outdoor elements but with the triangular cuts throughout the overhang, this has allowed for interesting light and shadow effects to enter the communal spaces of the interior. This also creates an appealing aesthetic interest when pedestrians pass by the building and see different intersecting forms of light and shadow on the façade of the building. The second would be the very similar grid pattern on the ceilings above the living, dining, and kitchen spaces with lighting above the grid to give intersecting lines of shadow numerous surfaces of the interior. This tends to keep the residents interest as the light and shadow will change throughout the day with the sun moving overhead. GMT & Partners has given careful thought to the orientation and placement of the individual living units as well. Each space has its own private bath, full dressing area, sleeping quarters, and meditation/ reading spot in them. All the reading spots in the unit maintain an eastern view towards the street to keep the indirect interaction alive in the independent living spaces. Here they are able have the same views as the main living space in the common area but only have it in privacy.
