Renewable Energy Goals throughout the Nation
Across the United States, switching to greener energy sources is becoming a top priority. This is clear by the steadily-growing number of states that have already set goals for achieving 100% renewable or clean energy. Let’s take a look at a few of the states that have set these targets, and how they’re working to achieve them.
California Long the nation’s solar leader, it’s not surprising that California bound itself by law to achieve 100% clean energy by 2045. By committing to fully “clean” energy, CA is aiming to use only zero-emission energy sources. In the meantime, the state has its sights set on 50% renewable energy by 2025. California is doing much to ensure the success of their mission. One of these efforts was rolled out last year, when the state began requiring all new homes to receive solar panel installations.
New York New York has also pledged to have 100% clean energy, but five years earlier than CA. Their 2040 goal is being supported by an initiative to double distribute solar by 2025, up to 6,000 megawatts. They are also majorly expanding large-scale energy by funding 20 solar, wind, and energy storage projects.
Hawaii Hawaii has passed legislation requiring that it achieve 100% renewable energy by 2045. HI already gets 33% of its energy from rooftop solar, but they are also the state that is most dependent on fossil fuels. Multiple policies are being expanded and rolled out by the state and its utility companies to incentivize adoption of alternative energy sources.
Washington D.C. Washington D.C. is trying to win the race by setting the earliest date for its target: 2032. The territory has made it a matter of law, with legislation requiring that it achieve 100% renewable energy by this date. D.C. is aiming to meet its goal by pushing solar, and incentives are predicted to result in a solar increase of ~164 megawatts within the next 5 years.
Puerto Rico The American territory of Puerto Rico has passed its own law mandating 100% renewable energy sources by 2050. This is highly ambitious, considering how much devastation PR suffered during Hurricane Maria. By promoting solar power there, PR can actually help its citizens avoid some of the resulting problems. Over 1.5 million people still lacked power 3 months after. With off-grid solar energy sources, citizens can increase their access to power without being so reliant upon state utility infrastructure.
