Will Multifamily Housing Sites Become Community Solar Centers?
As solar’s popularity has grown and states have been striving to meet sustainable energy targets, more and more solar installations have become community endeavors.
Many of these systems have followed the following model: a large on-ground solar installation is set up, and community members connect to it via the utility grid. However, there’s also a new model of community solar arising. WWW.GRIDFREEDOM.COM
Multi-family properties are now getting solarized. Their rooftops are being outfitted with solar systems that are capable of powering all of the housing units within the facility, while still having some left over. This is creating the potential to significantly lower community living costs and reduce the amount of energy neighborhoods demand from the grid.

Rolling Out Multi-Family Solar Installing solar panels on multi-family housing sites wasn’t unheard of before, but it has gained a lot of traction recently.
This is particularly true in California, where the new law requiring solar on all new home builds extends to multi-family housing and condos up to three stories. It has been predicted that this will cause a 14% increase in such installations within the next 3 years.

Solar apartment complexes are popping up in other parts of the country too. New York housing facilities are going solar in spite of their density, even utilizing innovative installation racks to accommodate their flat rooftops. The city of Denver has collaborated with HUD (the Department of Housing and Urban Development) to bring solar to hundreds of lowincome units. And down in sunny Florida, new developments like that of Pearl Homes are heralding a new “smart era of multi-family housing design.

A Smart Solar Community The Pearl Homes development will be built in Cortez, Florida. It is set to have 99 residential units, all fully powered by the facility’s rooftop installations. This will make it the first LEED Zero development on the Florida coastline.
Additionally, each residence will be outfitted with its own solar battery, allowing for power storage. The fact that all appliances will be Energy Star rated further enhances the facility’s efficiency. WWW.GRIDFREEDOM.COM
