It’s no wonder that the end of 2020 is being met with an especially high level of relief. People are eager to leave the hardships of this year behind, particularly those who work in industries that were heavily impacted by the pandemic. This puts solar contractors among those who are most looking forward to a new year filled with possibilities. Though the industry has been hit hard, there have also been many bits of good news along the way. The solar community has pulled together to give back to the community, donating muchneeded supplies to people in need. And despite the year’s dysfunction, many new laws and initiatives have been established that will benefit solar’s expansion. We take a look at a few of the most noteworthy below.

The Full Solar ITC was Extended by Two Years Impending expiration of the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) was weighing heavily on the minds of contractors, who anticipated a drop in customers who could afford solar without it. The end of this year was scheduled to trigger a step-down to just 22%, the first step in the gradual phase-out of the credit. However, the second COVID-19 bill just passed a few days ago, and that included terms that would extend the program’s full 26% tax credit for another two years. This means that homeowners will get the biggest possible tax write-off for their solar installations, at a time when many are suffering the economic fallout of this year’s lockdowns. The drop to a 22% credit is now scheduled for projects that start construction in 2023. The Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act was Passed In September, the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act received approval from the House of Representatives. Now, the bill is awaiting voting by the Senate. This marks a significant step toward expanding solar’s role and making it a part of America’s mainstream energy infrastructure. If passed by the Senate and signed off by new President, Joe Biden, the bill would establish a net-zero pollution goal by 2050, improve solar manufacturing processes, and create grants for solar projects and solar job development. It will also establish terms that improve equity and diversity within the solar workforce.
