Graduation 2012 ACTING&SCENOGRAPHY
Continuosly develop methods that are questioning the interaction between various art fields, between theatre and society and between theory and practice.
ABOUT THE NORWEGIAN THEATRE ACADEMY The Norwegian Theatre Academy was established within Østfold University College in 1996. At the origin of the project, it was a three years pilotproject in puppetry education accomplished by a foundation named: “Stiftelsen Norsk Dukketeater Akademi”. After a positive evaluation from the Ministry of Education, NTA started up as the new theatre education in Norway. Today we have moved beyond puppetry, to educate aspiring performing artists and scenographers who wish to explore the interaction between visual art and theatre, between theatre and society and between theory and practice. Our study program emphasizes collaboration between our two degree programs – scenography and acting. The artistic profile of the courses is inspired by theatre forms in which the perception of images, space, sound and bodily awareness are central elements. Our goal is to challenge students to think in innovative ways, to help them develop their own artistic practice, and to prepare them to meet professional demands of working with directors, choreographers, film-makers, composers, playwrights and other artists in both traditional and experimental genres.

Our identity is continuously developed by the artistic directors who curate the two BA programs for the students’ artistic development by giving the floor to renowned international artists. This way of organizing the teaching opens the Academy up for continuous development and brings us to the forefront of theatre training. It is important to notice that 60% of the teaching is provided by the visiting artists recruited worldwide, and that our artistic staff is appointed for a period (term) of 4 years. Furthermore, we offer our students the chance to study in a very special and intimate setting that allows close individual attention whether they are creating independent projects or directed productions. Since the very start in 1996, the Academy has graduated 66 actors and 43 scenographers. This spring, 12 new artists will graduate from Norwegian Theatre Academy. Congratulations to all!

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ARTIST This is the fourth group of scenography students I am proud to graduate, the ninth class since NTA’s foundation. At this moment I become aware how much they have grown, not only as individual artists on their distinct paths, developing their artistic careers, but also as a collaborative. There is a spirit unique to each class of students. The same way they have developed apart form each other, they have have grown into a unity. For three years they have been discovering, investigating, revealing, suffering, researching and questioning what we take for granted. Ida Grimsgaard explored the somatic self-reflection in performance art allowing her to understand and shape space with her performative presence. Sarah Funch Jahn extracted the essence from and expanded her artistic freshness and open mind into that of a precise and distinct spatial creator. BjÜrn Neukom allowed himself in a meticulous indulgence to evolve his previous exploration in the visual arts into scenography, acquiring the performative. Hanna Reidmar allowed her photographic eye to become even sharper while unfolding her perception into the inherent spatial, discovering the profound means of a scenographer. Jon Skulberg had already accumulated such a profound theoretical knowledge of the arts when he came to the academy, it was almost a burden for himself; he developed an accurate sense as an art practitioner allowing him now to carefully balance both sides and freely juggle its components. It is not only that I followed you grow over the last three years but also how much I learned from you. You have dealt with the complexity of developing a project within the collaborative frame of a theatre production, you have participated in the design in scale of a major exhibition bearing your contribution for more than a year, you have organized installations in the public environment in Oslo dealing with public organizations and authorities, you have started a political discussion in a German city with
your imaginative and precise statements reflecting history, you have developed stage-sets reflecting texts, you have built scenographies yourself and designed all visual material relating to them, you have explored the field of scenography in its holistic character, you have performed and you have investigated the fundamentals of space with your body as dancers which is the beginning of all architecture. You have collaborated with your fellow acting students, with lighting designers, with directors and costume designers, with musicians and visual artists, with scientists and curators, with politicians and prisoners, with photographers and cinematographers, with carpenters and technical directors. You enhanced your ability to listen and to see, to touch and to smell, the most essential skills you need as a scenographer. You have an awareness of all components of scenography and you know how to shape them in time. You have inquired the nature of architecture where it all starts from, and its encounter with theatre which made you experience the moment of scenography. In its substance you all have become architects, creators of space as all true scenographers essentially do architecture. Now the world is your playground! Sculpt it and perform it. And do not forget that you have a responsibility as artists; you may not be able to change the world, but nobody can do so alone. Norway, Europe, the whole world needs artists like you more than ever, you bear the responsibility to remind its societies what they have chosen to forget!

Karmenlara Ely PhD, Artistic Director Acting
A HUNGER FOR LIVENESS Act 9 is a remarkable group of young actors. In the short time I have been artistic director of acting at the Academy, I have come to respect this group of men and women as curious and feisty individuals with a deep sense of humor. We experienced a diversity of voices, surrealisms and comedic dreams emerge through their struggles and development. Their three years as acting students at NTA began under the previous director, Camilla Eeg-Tverbakk, who introduced them to teaching that immediately questioned their boundaries and pushed their definitions of theater. She describes this class thoughtfully, “Each student of ACT 9 has had a tremendous development through the three years. They have grown into strong collaborators, while preserving their individualities as artists. They have become responsible, playful, creative, and emphatic artists. I look forward to following their professional pathways.” Act 9 began with a very intense workshop with the scenographers, taught by Andrey Bartenev in a project called “Wash your hands until they get holes”. This legendary workshop experience still resonates as the first artistic crisis that bonded them together as a group. I think that experience is very well captured on the cover of the catalogue. We can see that raw energy of crisis and pleasure still in their performances today, and how they have learned to respond to space poetically and performatively. After this explosive opening, Act 9 started a journey together where they demanded more from their teachers and each other at every turn. Some valuable workshops were experienced with Nadine George, Hans Van den Broeck and Saburo Teshigawara, for example, where the group found very transformational tools and experienced new sides of themselves.
They continued to meet new artistic landmarks in their creative development each year. For example in their 2nd year directed production with João Garcia Miguel, this challenging director’s take on Gertrude Stein created a rhythmic bond in a uniquely insane ensemble with sharp musicality. While they had their individual studies on exchange in the fall of the 3rd year, they each investigated art practice uniquely, growing immensely, some with exciting international premieres. In the final independent productions this spring I was moved to see how articulate and strong they are artistically, and how dedicated they are to pursuing a steep path across expressive forms. They overcome obstacles well, and create from them. Each of the independent performances demonstrated creative risk and a willingness to reimagine what an audience can be. Their main acting teacher, Annalisa Dal Prá reflects: “From the start Act 9 as a class marked itself as individuals drawn towards an internal search for the art within them. Perhaps the most rewarding moments came in their independent productions, where they withdrew into their creative worlds, immersed in their questions, doubts, fragilities and then emerged with artistic experience. In these three years, ACT 9 has internalized the lessons of performative experience to the point that the performer is the lesson. Thank you for the journey.” Graduating students, I respect that none of you do things the easy way. This is a group of fighters and seekers. You are restless and dynamic individuals and have an insatiability that I admire. I also hope you allow yourselves to find the pleasure, self confidence and calm that comes with knowing you have accomplished something beautiful, just for a moment. That is just as important as being amazing on stage, which you are.

MIKKEL RASMUSSEN HOFPLASS ACTOR
I like to think of myself as an imagemaker. Both by being on stage, making installations and sculptures I create images. For me it is no strict division between different mediums. I see them more as tools in a toolbox that invite creation. In my toolbox all my tools are laying in a jumble, affecting each other, so it’s always an interesting surprise to see what gets dragged out of it.
