We at Grind hope that our readers can truly take advantage of what Spring has to offer, as we move out of the chill of Winter and the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in late Fall. If any of you out there have any images or stories related to Sandy, we would like to feature them in a special Sandy Tribute Issue. Sandy affected NJ more than any other storm in recent times, so if you have any pictures or words to show tribute (interesting insurance stories welcome!) we would like to hear from you. Please send anything you would like to share to grind.nj@gmail.com subject line Sandy, and we hope that our state and those residing in it have good luck rebuilding to make Summer 2013 an enjoyable one. Until then, have fun this Spring, and thanks again for checking out Grind Magazine.

SINDEE “My body is my temple, why not express myself by decorating the walls.”
EXPRESS YOURSELF Expressing how I feel through art and body modification is my passion. While growing up in the streets of Elizabeth I noticed how some were going down the wrong path in life; how a lot of my friends were turning out. I felt like I needed to change for the better, like taking up new hobbies and possibly meeting new people on the way. That’s when I started getting into art, I had a teacher in high school that really opened my eyes and showed me how I can use art as an outlet to express myself. That’s when my interest for body modification came to life. I’ve been working on filling up the blank spaces on my body with ink. At the moment
I am working on a project. I am starting my sleeve and dedicating it to my mother. She’s my biggest role model and I rather get something that’s permanently tattooed on my body that has a special meaning to me than something that seems “fashionable” to someone else. I am a sport loving, video game playing, tattoo junky, herb rolling fanatic. I am in my sixth year of being in an all-girls rugby team. I can play video games better than any guy around, and I can take the pain of a tattoo in spots that others can’t. I am an all around pretty chill person to be with. Just give me the time of day and you won’t regret it.

Allison
“I don’t even know” Thats how many this girl has…
Allison has been adorning her body with artwork for close to a decade, getting her first two tattoos illegally at age 16. “I don’t even know how many I have anymore at this point.” Most of her work is pretty traditional, with a few random pieces thrown in as well. Her favorite piece is a Chameleon from Adrenaline Tattoo in Brick, because she feels it describes her personality. She is also a woman of many colors; her hair has been almost every color in the spectrum, and she does all of the transformations herself, even as a beauty school dropout. Currently, Allison is an office manager at a dental office, as well as an alternative model and freelance makeup
artist. She began modeling in 2009 as a hair model for a local salon where she worked. Her interest branched out into more diverse themes of modeling, such as editorial, pin-up, fetish, etc; and, she owns a ridiculous collection of shoes appropriate for each theme. Most of Allison’s work can be credited to Jamison Staagard, Casey David, and Henri Diaz at Powerhouse Tattoo in Montclair, NJ. All of her piercings were also done at Powerhouse, by her dear pal, Thrasher. Allison has a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, and hopes to eventually get a Master’s degree in art therapy.

HENRY DIAZ
I work at two shops in New Jersey. Powerhouse being one of them. I enjoy the change of atmosphere and working with these fellow goofballs. I have dedicated a large part of my creative energy toward the study of a traditional Japanese style. I enjoy japanese motifs but i love when i get the opportunity to tattoo true traditional dark wind bars and clouds with that motif. The look is very powerful and striking. My favorite song is Queen’s ‘fat bottomed girls’.
These image displays Henry Diaz and his amazing body suit.
GET TO KNOW
JAMISON STAGAARD I relentlessly searched for a tattoo apprenticeship 5 years ago after 2 years of comic book and animation school. I first apprenticed at a shop in Union City, NJ that I had found on craigslist. I then finished out my apprenticeship in Jersey City under Ray Hart Flores at Only Glory tattoo (formally known as Lucky hearts). I tattooed the first 4 years of my career there which was insane, terrifying at times and wonderfully amazing to say the least. Currently I’m tattooing in what I like to call an illustrative style with a traditional application inspired by many amazing tattooers out of the UK and NYC. I’ve been avidly seeking to better my abilities, style andknowledge as a young tattooer in this industry. From the beginning I have completely fallen in love with tattooing and I am really enjoying traveling, doing conventions, guest spots and working alongside awesome friends and extremely rad tattooers at Powerhouse.
Meet
Casey David Casey David has been a professional tattooer for 8 years now. He started off as an apprentice in Pennsylvania at Bucks county ink where he started his career in tattooing. Casey has a strong love for the traditional way of tattooing, the old ‘bold will hold’ philosophy. One thing is for ertain though, he is not a one trick pony, he can tattoo everything from big bold lines and solid color to fine line black and gray. He also specializes in in do lettering. Fancy elegant scripting is something he prides himself on. He’s tattooed lettering everything from forearms to throats and even faces! Casey also can pull off full blown Japanese work, having experience with half and full sleeves and full back compositions. If you’re looking for a tattoo that will look amazing for the rest of your life, come see him at powerhousetattoo company.
mesk GRAFFITI ARTIST & ILLUSTRATOR
My name is Gustavo Teixeira, aka ‘Mesk’. I am a freelance illustrator, licensed since 2008, in Digital Arts and Multimedia by Esad-Matosinhos, Portugal. Since I can remember, I have always liked to draw and experiment with new techniques. The feeling you get from creating is unexplainably great. In 2001, through a close friend, I jumped into the world of comics, and since then have dedicated myself to its art form. I also developed a taste for graffiti and combined the two genres. However, it was only in 2004 that I really took the plunge. It was in that year that I joined a crew and developed my technique even further. To have such a large space to work with, like a wall, a huge canvas all to yourself, felt great. With something as simple as a can of spray paint, the possibilities seemed endless. I was surrounded by a laid back and festive spirit that symbolizes this art form. In that experience I found the strength to go on and keep expanding in my area. I still have that mentality today, but now I simply work alone. In 2005, I discovered digital format (up until then, trading pencils for a computer mouse didn’t make much sense). I began on Windows MS Paint, which is extremely limited, but with a lot of will power, it gave me the basic notions of Vector Design. It was only in 2006 that I learned the first steps in Freehand, and later, in 2010, progressed to Illustrator. I can’t really be specific about what influences my work. I am very attentive to detail and like to observe others. I don’t think I can settle for one type of art, specifically. I take great pride in how versatile I am. I enjoy trying new things and jump from style to style. Lately I have been more inclined towards infantile illustration. I like the fluid forms and happy, live colors that scream emotion. I try to keep myself up to speed on art in general, because I give great value to original ideas. The technological advancement in this field amazes me. Projects are more ambitious and complex by the day, paving the way for even more artistic opportunities.
