Grivel history On arriving in Courmayeur from Chamonix the alpinist feels he’s discovered the other side of the moon. Even though the Italian and French Alps are part of the same mountain chain, the two sides appear completely different. Anyone used to the French side will find the other mysterious and unfamiliar. Initially it seems harsh and wild but on getting to know it better and adopting a cautious approach one falls under its influence and becomes totally bewitched! This is the home of Grivel. Created in 1818, by a family of blacksmiths with Walser origins, Grivel was a modest family affair that started to transform their production of agricultural tools to satisfy the rather peculiar demands of a new breed of wealthy tourists who, for unfathomable reasons, wanted to climb the mountains! Today 180 years later, Grivel, still basically one large family, continues in its balancing act between tradition and
progress, between forging and aerospace technology, between intuition and R&D. Grivel Mont-Blanc has achieved all possible certifications: from TUV GS (Sichereit Gepruft) for product quality to ISO 9001-Vision 2000 for our management system and even the ISO 14001 environmental Certification for environmental compatibility. In May 2009 the company opened a new production unit in a much bigger space where it is easier to manage the different lines of production. This will help our flexibility in the face of the new demands that come in daily from around the world. This new set up means that we can widen our range of products and maintain our avant-garde position in the marketplace. The new location has allowed us to change to solar energy making our production cleaner and more eco-friendly. Since 2010 all the energy needs are produced by our photovoltaic panels.
walter cecchinel Walter Cecchinel was born on May 27th, 1946. He became a mountain guide at ENSA in Chamonix in 1971. From ’72 to ’77 he was an alpinism teacher at ENSA, the place where all French guides and many international guides are trained. He has made around 20 first ascents, first winter ascents and first solo ascents. In 1973 he climbed the “Couloir NordEst” of the Drus, in the Mont Blanc Range. This is considered the ascent that has changed the history of ice climbing. For the first time, the technique later called “piolet traction” had allowed them to complete quickly and safely a climb that until then was considered unapproachable. 2
His contribution, together with some Scottish pioneers, brought the diffusion of the modern techniques of ice climbing, still in use today. He has attended many expeditions in Hoggar, Nanda Devi, Everest, Nanga Parbat and Hidden Peak. He has been awarded the “Legion d’Honneur”. Since 1973 he has worked on the evolution of mountain equipment becoming one of the major experts in the design and production of rucksacks and gloves. Today, his great experience is clear in the “Engineered by Walter Cecchinel” line of Grivel rucksacks. We are very proud to have in our team such an alpinist and technician.
Grivel is haPPy anD ProUD to helP the Planet throUGh the Use oF solar enerGy. what is Photovoltaic? The sun has been active for billions of years, supplying us light and heat for free. Every day, it sends to the earth as much energy as it is used by the whole world population in one year. Just to have an idea, consider that every square meter of the sun radiates in one hour as much energy as the burning of 6,300 liters of oil for heating. If we could use directly less than one hundredth of this enormous energy source we could solve for ever all the energy problems of our planet.

technoloGy The photovoltaic technology allows to convert solar radiation into direct current electricity, through the photovoltaic effect. It is based on the properties of some semiconductors, such as silicon, which generate electricity when hit by solar radiation. This makes a “photovoltaic cell”, and several linked cells make a “photovoltaic array”, which will be connected into a “solar panel” such as the ones you can see on the roofs of build- ings The word “photovoltaic” explains everything: “photo” means “light” in Greek and “voltaic” comes from Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the battery.
SINCE 1818
PerForMance To evaluate the performance of the panels, several factors need to be taken into consideration, such as: • Their geographical position (latitude) • The solar radiation (daily hours, intensity) • The average temperature (temperature too influences performance) • The orientation of the surface. the aDvantaGes are Many • The source (the sun) will not run out . • No wastes produced • No maintenance needed for the components • High reliability through the lack of moving Parts • No occupation of natural ground • The energy of the future: all good things come from above why has Grivel chosen solar enerGy? • To avoid burning non-renewable energy sources • To help to save the environment • To leave to our children a better world • To avoid the use of natural ground, so important in our area (Aosta Valley) • To lower the cost of energy and remain competitive in the global markets • To show the way to those who are doubtful • To present on the global markets products which respect the environment • Because respecting the environment should be logical for outdoor industry players • Because it can be an advantage towards our competitors • Because it shows how our “Made in Italy” is true and real

The roof of the factory is around 7000 square meters, and the solar panels are covering a surface equivalent of a football field Our solar panels are generating 516 Kwp They are producing the energy consumption of 194 families Every day they are saving the planet’s air of 806 Kg of CO2, equivalent of a car travelling 5.800 Km During their 25-year lifecycle, they will produce around 12.000.000 KWh, which would cover the needs of one family for 4.200 years Every year they are saving 1.173 barrels of oil. 3

news Grivel has for nearly 200 years led the development of Ice Climbing equipment, but to move ahead in this rapidly changing “fast &furious” new age of technology and materials, we decided to make a radical improvement in our approach to development. This is the reason we decided to create a new dept. a real Laboratory for Development, a place where we can explore the possible and beyond. With all these recent changes in materials and design we chose to invest in this bright future, brought about by mi-

xed climbing, competition and rising standards. To head this new department we have brought in a new face, Stefano Azzali a man devoted to climbing and climbing equipment, no stranger to high tech radical materials. Stefano’s work in this field of new technologies and avantgarde design qualifies him to lead “Grivel’s Racing Development” (Grivel Reparto Corse). It’s almost second nature to a man coming from Modena, the home of design, engineering and above all “Speed”. We look forward to the future as we are proud of our past.

n the past ice axes and crampons had to be very versatile: there was only one type, used for everything. Now there’s a different model for every sub-discipline: for beginners and for experts, for ski touring and snowboarding, for high altitude and for the high stresses of “dry tooling” and competition. The diagram below illustrates the different requirements: from the easiest at the bottom to the most technical at the top (the letters are repeated in the description of every product). This is so that everyone can choose the product that is most appropriate: blue denotes the suggested use and red the perfect one.A for ski touring, B and C for traverses and easy climbs, D and E for classical and technical alpinism, F and G for ice falls and goulottes, G and H for modern mixed, dry tooling and competition. n passato le piccozze ed i ramponi dovevano essere polivalenti:un modello solo per soddisfare tutte le diverse esigenze.

CE
A well known system which relies on a nylon speed lever at the rear and a stainless steel front bale to hold the boot. Quick to put on, these bindings are perfect for plastic mountaineering boots that have a rigid sole and substantial heel and toe welts. The stainless steel safety strap, which was invented by Grivel, is permanently mounted on the front bale and prevents total loss of the crampon should it be forced off of the boot.
NEW MATIC An evolution of the Cramp-O-Matic system which utilizes the C-O-M rear bale and lever. The plastic harness system is hinged from two front posts which retain the boot securely even if it has a shallow, worn front welt or overboots are being used. It is a simple and efficient binding, which is far more versatile than the original Cramp-O-Matic style. Made in bi-component plastic: the black part is the stronger, bearing the strain whilst the yellow part is softer, increasing adherence to the boot. The harness is made from the strongest, most durable plastic available -Zytel DuPont, which was developed for the manufacture of alpine ski bindings. Obviously it cannot last forever, so please, after long and severe use replace the harness the same way you would resole trekking boots or rock climbing shoes.
NEW CLASSIC
An evolution of the Classic binding. Both front and rear plastic harnesses are hinged from their respective retention posts and may be “opened” to facilitate attachment to the boot, then closed securely once the boot is inside. The single strap closure system is so simple we may not need to provide instructions; the New Classic is therefore ideal for rental programs and first time users. This system is simple and reliable, quick and easy, but it does take up a bit more space in the rucksack.

The next generation of binding. The GSb™ (Grivel Scarpa binding) is a safer, easier and faster system to attach to the boot. It’s safer because with the GSb™ ,there is nothing potruding to catch on rocks or in cracks resulting in the front bale detaching. It’s easier because unlike traditional models, the GSb™ hook grip doesn’t depend on the shape, or above all the wear of the boots’ sole. It’s faster than any other system – very useful if you have to continually put them on and off. It’s more compact: limiting the space needed to stow away crampons.
SKI MATIC
FLEX BAR
Totally new binding system specific for ski touring. It considers the technical needs of users together with the search of simplicity and lightness. The new front bail is “bomb proof” because it adapts easily and perfectly to the modern ski touring boots. Compact storage and minimum weight for transportation. Warning: the front binding fits modern plastic ski touring boots and it is not guaranteed for traditional mountain boots.

CANDELA
New tool to remove the ice core frozen inside ice screws. Fold-out hook to pull cord through Abalakov anchor (V-thread) and retractable blade to cut cord or sling material. Clip it to your harness or stash inside a screw (soft plastic material won’t scratch a screw’s surface finish).
GEAR SAFE
Gear Safe Bag keeps all your equipment safe and sound and very accessible. Two large zipped openings make access easy. The netting helps ventilation and consequent drying out.
BLACK HOLE
ice screw Protection Good protection for the sharp and delicate tips of ice screws during transport. New design that fits various diameters of screws. The bottom of each cap is pierced to release any water and dampness that could cause rust, a problem with the old caps. Whilst using the screws the protection can be hooked onto the screws handle where it doesn’t risk being lost. This is a solution to two problems: rust on the blades of screws and losing the caps whilst out. Patented.

MAILLON RAPIDE caraBiners
Many times in its long history since 1818, Grivel has made carabiners. We introduce now a completely new line, modern and ultra-light. Grivel carabiners are made from 7000-series aluminum. We know very well this alloy as we use it for ice axe shafts. It offers the best balance between weight, breaking

We all love the comfort and versatility of the Daisy-chain. But in its traditional version it can lead to wrong uses and become therefore dangerous. In fact no DC on the market is guaranteed to the CE values of 22kN, like the quick draws or the carabiners. Therefore it can be the “weak ring” of the system, mainly when used in belaying. The pockets of a classical daisy chain have a very low loading strength which never exceeds the 2kN because they are designed

Weight 76 gr- 2,68 ozs Lenght: 119 cm Also available with K1N carabiner for static load only, and consequently the only safe way to use a daisy chain as a sling is between the two end loops. The Dyneema sling is so thin that can cut itself when in traction. Grivel has studied the problem over a long period of time, and has come up with the problem solving GDC. Today Grivel can offer a chain guaranteed to 22kN in every loop and every point! No more possibility of error, and no risk of mistake or dangerous maneuvers.
