ABOUT THE `BAD GUYS` AND THOSE WHO WANT TO FOLLOW

A handful of young Swiss wrestlers of the Swiss Wrestling Club Grindelwald meet one of their role models – Niklaus Zenger, a well known regional champion. Together they practice for the sport that captivates both young and old - Swiss wrestling.

t was as if someone had spilled a sack of jumping-beans across the meadow. Suddenly, young boys jump in all directions, tug on a jacket here, grab a trouser leg there and soon are rolling through the sawdust in a wild ball. Lord of this multi-faceted monster with fluffy hair is the Grindelwalder Lukas Bohren, who is responsible for the Swiss wrestlers in the Swiss Wrestling Club. Although Swiss wrestling has been a popular sort in Grindelwald since time immemorial, a few years ago the junior team had shrunk to almost zero members. But now things are moving again, and Lukas Bohren trains every Wednesday with a group of around 14 children.

though. Lukas Bohren says that „Most of the time the guys get the competition fever right away and they perform as if they were at a Swiss wrestling festival.“ The sport is good for the boys; they can wrestle, fight, and gauge their powers. But discipline is important during the training as otherwise it is impossible to learn the moves properly. Therefore the trainer insists on a proper warm up, even if the open-air training, high above Grindelwald, is a little different than that usually found in the Swiss wrestling cellar.

On this particular day, the young Swiss wrestlers meet one of their role models, Niklaus Zenger from Habkern, who won several wrestling awards – one of the ‘bad He loves this job and says, „It‘s great with guys’ from the region. This term refers to the kids as they have a lot of energy.“ So- a really strong wrestler, of which there are metimes it is not easy to slow them down quite a few in the Bernese Oberland. None

of them seems to be ‘evil’ in the true sense of the word and definitely not Niklaus Zenger, who walks up to the boys with a broad smile and who then immediately starts training with them; push-ups, squats, frog-hopping, and loosening joints. Swiss wrestling not only needs strength and endurance, but also agility. If you look at the older ones in the sawdust, you sometimes ask yourself how certain moves are possible, especially as one of them lifts the other up on his feet as if it was nothing. The Swiss wrestlers are on average about 100 kilograms heavy – but nevertheless these ‘power-houses’ can do the bridge, one of the main yoga exercises, effortlessly. Niklaus Zenger, who was prevented from participating during the entire season 2018 following a cruciate ligament tear, knows that the risk of injury is high. The accident happened, of all things, during his

endurance that help to win over a tricky opponent, but also being shrewd and calm, as so much is dependent on a positive mind set. Zenger explains that „even before the competition starts, the psychological games begin with the handshake, if the other person wants to show me that he is the stronger one.“ You have to be able to handle that. Zenger, although some allow themselves be advised on the fitness or strength areas, or they get tips from the technical directors of the Swiss wrestling clubs, it is best to train with a good Swiss wrestler. „We learn a lot from each other,“ he notes. Pius Egger, one of the young ones from Grindelwald, asks „were you a good young Swiss wrestler?“ Niklaus Zenger smiles and replies „No, not really. My brother was much better.“ He explains to the children that he would rather have become a ski racer but was not good enough. So he decided on another sport, Swiss wrestling, which was popular in his home village of Habkern. However, at the beginning it was difficult.

Whilst his brother was celebrating victories, Niklaus lay in the sawdust and struggled with the disappointment. But Niklaus did not let anything get him down and so he did not lose heart. It was only after some years that his career really took off. So far, in total, Niklaus has won 31 awards (wreath); two of them at a Swiss wrestling festival which is the three-yearly championships of the Swiss wrestlers. The smallest of the troop, Ben Zurfluh, frees himself from a bridge and snorts: „I almost do not remember what is up and down and that makes it difficult to break free.“ His colleague Ruedi Suter, with his fiery red hair, knocks him from the back into the sawdust and laughs. „Wrestling is just great“ he answers when asked why

he chose this sport. „It takes strength, endurance and technique“ he adds. For some of the kids, the seed for the fascination of the sport had already been planted in the family as the fathers were also active wrestlers. The fact that the Swiss wrestlers of the Bernese Oberland are so successful right now is adding extra fuel towards the revival of this sport. Meanwhile it has got cold, and the sun has said goodbye behind the Wetterhorn which has left the sky with a powerful red evening light glowing over the gigantic rock face. It is time for Lukas Bohren to put his happy bunch of ‘jumping-beans’ back in their sacks (in the car) and take them home. The

kids say goodbye to ‘Chlöisel’ (as Niklaus is called by the locals) with strong handshakes and the promise to keep their fingers crossed for him for his next season. On the way back to the valley he thinks about the changes in his sport. He is pleased with the attention Swiss wrestling receives today. „When I started, media interest was low, today it‘s different,“ he notes. The big wrestling festivals are transmitted virtually seamlessly by the television stations and in the cities it is considered ‘hip’ when someone gets hold of a ticket for a competition. Over the years, the athletes have also professionalised their training. Today it is no longer enough for a strong farmer to briefly step into his wrestling pants and put his opponent on his back, as was the case in the past. However, even today there are hardly any wrestlers who live as professional sportsmen. Even the best of them, such as the wrestling kings Matthias Glarner or Kilian Wenger, both training colleagues of Zenger, have a regular job in addition to the sport. Niklaus Zenger works as a machinist for a construction company in Unterseen. To hire an athlete like him requires a lot of flexibility, he says. It is fantastic that his current employer is so understanding. In addition to the training and the competitions at Swiss wrestling festivals there is something else which Niklaus Zenger is passionate about and that is hunting. JOIN THE CONVERSATION... Do not be discouraged by the many technical German terms at Swiss wrestling. Some are explained here: Gang: a competition round Gestellt: A competition ends in a draw, if neither of the two opponents manages to put his opponent on his back. Schlussgang: the last competition round Zwilchhose: The Swiss wrestlers wear rolled-up short pants made of twill with a wide leather strap. This is where they grab each other for the fight. These trousers can withstand tensile forces up to a tonne. Einteilung: A referee team of at least three people determines which opponent must take on which opponent. Noten (Scores): Scores are awarded after each round (Gang), scores between 10.00 and 9.75 are usual for a win, for a “Gestellten” a 9.00 is usual for offensive wrestling, otherwise 8.75 and for a defeat 8.75 or 8,50. Kurz: there are countless different names for certain techniques, some of the best known are called Kurz, Brienzer, Bur, Hüfter or Wyberhaken. Plattwurf: A Swiss wrestler places his opponent directly on his back and gets a 10.00. Kranz (wreath): 15-18 % of the best Swiss wrestlers receive a wreath of oak leaves at a festival. Arnold Forrer: The Toggenburg Swiss wrestling king has won the most wreaths so far - 142. Swiss Wrestling King: Winner of the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival, held every three years. Eidgenosse (Confederate): Anyone who receives a wreath at a Swiss wrestling festival may call himself an Eidgenosse. Böser (evil one): a strong Swiss wrestler, usually wreath wrestler. Muni: Live awards are given at Swiss wrestling festivals. At big occasions the winners often receive a Muni (bull). Kaffee Lutz: Coffee with brandy - very popular at Swiss wrestling festivals. During his injury break he had plenty of time to devote to this hobby, and so he is well-rested and confident to start this important 2019 summer season in a positive manner. TO BE A PART OF IT... In 2019, the highlight for the Swiss wrestlers is the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine festival in Zug (23th – 25th August 2019), which is held only once every three years. However, the Swiss wrestlers from the Bernese Oberland, participate in a number of other Swiss wrestling festivals, including classics in their homeland such as the Brünigschwinget on 28th July 2019 in the arena on the Brünigpass. The Oberland Swiss Wrestling Festival, which will take place in Interlaken on the 14th July 2019 will be a special occasion for

THE FAMILY SIDE OF GRINDELWALD THE CABLE CAR PFINGSTEGG PROMISES ADVENTURES FOR YOUNG AND OLD

mall, charming and idyllic, the top of the Pfingstegg cable car is situated at 1386m above Grindelwald on the scenic alpine meadows, with craggy cliffs and alpine peaks towering above it. The cable car celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2017 and, although not as well-known as First, Scheidegg and MĂ¤nnlichen, it is wonderful testament to mountain engineering.

If you want to take a leisurely trip away from the hustle and bustle, this is the place to go. Families in particular will appreciate the large playground at the top of the cable-car, the toboggan run, the new Fly-Line and the beautiful fire pit. In addition, young guests can go on a treasure hunt and learn something about dragons, knights and dwarves, who are said to have lived in Grindelwald many years ago! A variety of hiking trails lead along rock walls to the impressive gorges of the lower and upper Grindelwald glacier. The exclusive dinners in the cable car are a special experience. FLY-LINE & TOBOGGAN RUN In addition to the well-known summer toboggan run, which provides fun and action at the top of the Pfingstegg cable car since 1999, there is now a new attraction for all those who like it slower and a bit more gentle - The Fly-ine. This leads through the forest below the station, and attached with a harness, one can literally feel as if one is floating through the trees. The system is the first of its kind in the world and is suitable for children from the age of 3 years. It is planned that the The Fly-Line will open in August 2019. It will be operational in all weather conditions whereas the toboggan run can only be used in dry weather.

CANDLELIGHT& SKY-DINNER An unforgettable experience is enjoying dinner in the cable car as it slowly rises up the mountain. For the ultimate romantic evening, you can even book a candlelit dinner. HIKE THROUGH THE BREITLOUWINA-TUNNEL An exciting excursion for the whole family, is the hike from the top station of the Pfingstegg Cable Car to the restaurant Milchbach and then across the Lütschine to the Wetterhorn restaurant. The hike leads through the Breitlouwina. Since 2005, to avoid the land-slide area, you now pass through a 150 m long illuminated tunnel. This is an easy trail which leads through a beautiful forest, with benches situated along the route, offering ideal places to rest and enjoy the constantly changing but spectacular views. Refreshments are available at the Chalet Milchbach or at the restaurant Wetterhorn. Afterwards you can take the bus back to Grindelwald.

TREASURE HUNT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY From summer 2019 onwards, the Pfingsteggbahn will have a Treasure Hunt experience for all the family to enjoy. Everyone will be given a map showing the various points in the area which must be found. When you arrive at one of these points, you will be able to discover one of the many legends and stories of the region, including those about the dragons, dwarves and knights that are said to have lived in Grindelwald many years ago! Anyone who manages to visit all the points and knows the password will receive a surprise at the cable car station. If you like, you can also look for the Geocach, which is hidden 200 m from the top station on the hiking trail to the Bäregg restaurant. Along the way to Berghaus Bäregg there are more caches (more info at: www.geocaching.com).

Great excitement for everyone as the Pfingsteggbahn becomes a pirate land! HOTEL GLACIER

A NEW STAR IS BORN IN THE GLACIER VILLAGE

Since reopening the Hotel Glacier has already received a lot of attention. This small, chic boutique hotel with its long history, is a refreshing new addition to the hotels on offer in Grindelwald.

n the early days of tourism to Grindelwald, the view from the Hotel Glacier was of snow and ice as far as the eye could see. A 150 years ago the glaciers reached down to the village but much has changed since then. The glaciers have retreated and the Hotel Glacier experienced many ups and downs, along with a number of changes in ownership. The most recent chapter in its history began in 2017, when Justine and Jan Pyott bought the hotel and radically renovated it. In April 2018, the hotel re-opened as a small, but chic boutique 4 star hotel, which has since received many positive reviews. â&#x20AC;&#x17E;It quickly became clear to us that we needed to tell what was happening hereâ&#x20AC;&#x153; says Jan Pyott. The background of the building had inspired the new owners from the very beginning. They began to research and, with the involvement of architect Francesca Alder from Einigen, developed a common theme for the design of the building. The theme of the glaciers runs throughout the decoration, fixtures

and fittings â&#x20AC;&#x201C; glass lamps in the form of ice-cubes, as an icefall in the staircase, and in the many old photos and artwork. The glaciers were not only a tourist attraction, but in the time before the invention of the refrigerator, an important source of income, as ice was taken away in large pieces and sold as a preservative for food. This story is amongst many told in the hotel. The history of the glaciers and ice is one thing, but how this history has been integrated into the Hotel Glacier is another. The materials used in the design, both exterior and interior, of the Hotel reflect both the history, culture and style of the region. So much thought has gone into the final finishes and it now reflects an elegance, style and personal touch, which can be felt by a guest immediately on entering the Hotel. Jan and Justine Pyott have different professional backgrounds neither of which were in hospitality and so came to this new and ex-

citing venture without any previous experience of running a hotel. However, the couple’s hard-work and dedication were rewarded, as within a few weeks of opening, the Hotel Glacier, with its 28 bedrooms, spa and fitness area, and restaurant had exceeded all expectations and was voted a success! Within a year, they had gone from 12 employees to 26, many of whom were working in a number of different jobs within the hotel. The concept and design behind the Hotel Glacier makes this inter-change of roles very easy, and as Jan Pyott explained “All our guests are very important to us, and so having this type of work structure gives couples, friends, family and individuals a personal and warm welcome. We pride ourselves on the excellence of our hospitality.”The Hotel attracts many Swiss guests but also those of other nationalities, including the Middle East, Asia and the USA. A sudden increase in demand for bookings from South Korea was a stroke of luck for the Pyott’s, when they discovered that a South Korean blogger had praised the hotel “He had told us that the bookings were likely to go up, and we could not believe quite how fast his prediction came true.” Jan used to be a professional tri-athlete prior to his becoming an hotelier and his wife Justine, originally from Paris, was a base jumper. She had known Grindelwald from her work at the Tourist Office. They had both dreamed of owning a hotel in this iconic region, dominated by the Eiger,

and one they had long fallen in love with. The Hotel Glacier illustrates perfectly how good ideas, a cool mind and sheer determination can make a dream come true! The hotel is an important source of local employment including Chef Jonas Messer. The Glacier’s restaurant, awarded 13 Gault Millau points, allows Chef Jonas Messer to set the tone for the small but excellent 4 star restaurant – open seven days a week. The menu is ‘travel-inspired’ but in keeping with the philosophy of the Glacier, relies on the quality of local produce. The 320 year old cellar is home to an excellent choice of wines, all of hich help to compliment the menu and inspiring dishes. The wine cellar is also a small restaurant for a different type of dining experience; wine tasting and food – a perfect combination! THE HISTORY OF THE MOUNTAIN HOTEL The Berghotel Faulhorn was built by Samuel Blatter, from Unterseen, in 1830, as one of the first touristic mountain Gasthaus of Switzerland. Apart from those on some of the Swiss mountain passes, only the hotel on Rigi-Kulm (built in 1816) and the Kurhaus on the Weissenstein (built in 1826/27) are older. Until the year 1930, the Faulhorn was managed by different owners, among them Fritz Bohren, called Pintenfritz, from Grindelwald. In 1931, Peter and Klara Almer-Steuri from Grindelwald acquired the Gasthaus and in 1957 extended it by a ‘dormitory’ for tourists. In 1962, their daughter Klara Mangott-Almer took over the business and had the outbuilding converted into a new restaurant with a kitchen. From 2000 to 2004, the mountain hotel was leased out, and in 2005 the daughter of the Mangotts, Ursula Garbani-Mangott, took over the mountain hotel with her husband Claudio and their son Christian in the third generation. Christian Garbani and his wife Nina have now managed the Faulhorn since 2018 and run the business together – perhaps there will be a fifth generation…

While Niro (the Poodle) is looking for a quiet place to doze, Selina plays in the sandpit on the terrace or draws in the dining room. „Usually I take care of Selina,“ explains Nina Garbani, but in the main season, from July to August, when there is a lot of work to do, they also hire a nanny. Every few weeks, one parent takes a break in the valley for a few days to take care of the things and to check up on their ‘winter’ home in Wilderswil. „Mostly these so-called ‘free’ days are often crammed with appointments when I would much rather just be relaxing!“ says Nina with a smile.

The restaurant is open until 10.00 pm every day of the week. The whole operation is heavily dependent on the weather – if it is raining then there are often cancellations at short notice and fewer visitors than expected. As Christian explains “when that happens we, as a family, have a few precious moments together and have the time to eat a fondue together in peace and quiet”. The hotel, which was built in 1830, does not have showers for visitors, and there are only wash-bowls in the bedrooms, and the fact that the beds are from the early days of the hotel, along with creaking floor-boards, does not seem to worry anyone. “It is the warm welcome, tranquillity and sense of well-being that our guests appreciate and love. The most rewarding part for us is to know that guests are happy and satisfied and value the simplicity and beauty of staying on the Faulhorn” say Christian and Nina.

Water is pumped up by hand and the waste-water is collected in a large container which is then taken by helicopter down to the valley at the end of the summer season – the only way to dispose of the waste! There is always something to do here and that is exactly what the Garbani family love about the Faulhorn. Nina (who herself is a trained nurse and in the winter works as a piste patroller on the ski slopes of the First) and Christian say with a laugh “We both like physical work and could never dream of working in an office. What we really love and appreciate is the freedom and the simplicity of our life up here – although given the job we do, it is not always that simple!”

The season ends in the middle of October and then the Garbani family move back to the valley. “It is always a sad but happy time for us. We miss the summer life but it is nice to get back and have time for friends and hobbies. It is also a time then, for us to take a much earned holiday and totally switch off but at the same time we can’t wait to get back up there again!” This summer will see an extra member of the family up on the Faulhorn as Nina is expecting a new baby in March. Nina is very relaxed about it and explains that the baby can really be with her with the help of a baby-sling, just as Selina had when she was a baby. Despite the very busy and, at times, stressful life, the Garbani family still find beautiful moments to enjoy the sunrise, the spectacular scenery, and the fragrant scent of the plants, and the changing colours which herald the coming of autumn. PATHS TO THE FAULHORN If you want to visit the historic hotel high above Grindewald, you need to lace up your hiking boots- but the magnificent panorama and the sunrises make up for the effort. The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the Faulhorn is from the First mountain station. The two-hour, easy hike leads past the Bachalpsee (lake) and offers beautiful views. One route which is a little longer (2.5 hours), but with significantly more altitude difference, is the ascent from Bussalp, which can be reached via Grindelwald by bus. If you have more time, you should hike from the Schynigen Platte on the high-altitude trail to the Faulhorn (4 hours). JUNGFRAU CENTER: NEW AND OLD COME TOGETHER

A complex construction has been conceived in Interlaken East by GRIWA ARCHITEKTUR AG and GRIWA PLAN AG. The former Wohncenter von Allmen has, step by step, become the Jungfrau Centre. All of this was achieved whilst people were continuing to live and work in the building.

tefan Garbani, Managing Director of GRIWA ARCHITEKTUR AG, and his deputy Ewald Welling, both agree that the construction could have been simpler. One could have simply taken away the Wohncenter von Allmen completely and replaced it with a new building; but in reality different conditions prevailed. The building at Interlaken East station is now not only home to the Wohncenter, but also houses several condominium owners. From the very start the requirement was to handle both the conversion

and the new construction in tandem to the on-going commercial and private operations. Following the first building application in December 2015, the construction permit in February 2016, and the official take-over of the Wohncenter by GRIWA PLAN AG in the spring of 2016, the project underwent many changes. The version that was finally conceived for the Jungfrau Centre opened on the 21st June 2019 and evolved

like a living body. At first it was assumed that both the southern as well as the northern part of the building would remain untouched, but over time, demolition of the northern part proved to be by far the most economical option. “We have adapted the building as the project changed,” says Ewald Welling (project leader) “and yet, we are sure that the current building is a fully developed and impressive object.” The construction required the expertise of architects, planners and companies. At first a garage was built under a section of the existing building which in itself brought many challenges – such as the handling of ground-water and the securing of the building along with the impalements of the subsoil of the building. All the complex processes had to be highly regulated. About 5,000 m2 of the large building used to be used as showrooms. Converting this space into apartments required sophisticated solutions in terms of statics and technical installations. The south part of the project had to be finished first so that the owners (who lived on the north side) could move into finished apartments.

The Wohncenter von Allmen also relocated their business premises to the south side. In the final version of the project, the building now houses thirty-three new and four existing apartments; some of which belong to the condominium owners and others are used as holiday apartments, or for permanent rental. In addition to GRIWA RENT AG, which had already moved into its office on the ground floor in March 2018, the first commercial business also moved in – the Berner Kantonalbank BEKB. In the adjoining spaces, the former Wohncentre von Allmen opened its showrooms on two floors under the new name GRIWA INTERIOR hand in hand with GRIWA TREUHAND AG. A medical centre is located on the first floor. A branch of GRIWA ARCHITEKTUR AG has also moved into the Jungfrau Centre. Stefan Garbani and Ewald Wellig are very pleased about the new beginnings at Interlaken East and are convinced that the location has a lot of potential.

BUILDING RENOVATION WITH GRIWA ARCHITEKTUR AG

Badly insulated houses are the cause of almost half of the CO2 emissions in Switzerland, especially houses that were built before 1990, but have the potential to become energy efficient. GRIWA ARCHITEKTUR AG would be happy to accompany you through all the steps required in the renovation of a building. Often the basic plans are no longer up-to-date. Therefore, instead of recording with tape and pencil, today there are 3D laser scanners that measure a building quickly and extremely accurately. The desired views, sections and floor plans can thus be digitalised. The next step is the building analysis in which, for example, a thermal imager can be used to document where heat is lost. We also recommend a GEAK plus (a building energy certificate issued by the cantons) which allows for the evaluation and comparison of a property with regard to energy requirements, and living comfort. Before the restructuring is implemented, further important decisions have to be made regarding strategy and planning, for example, whether a building application is necessary or, whether funds can be provided by the federal government and the canton. «ALPENGLÜHEN» OPEN-AIR THEATRE IN GRINDELWALD A journey through the history of Grindelwald.

n the summer of 2019, the long-time dream that a group of people from Grindelwald had of putting on a theatre production at the foot of the Eiger will be realised. In August and September, with more than a hundred participants, the play Alpenglühen will be performed in a large meadow below the church in Grindelwald. In a five-part play, the production recalls the history of tourism and alpinism in the valley of Grindelwald. Alpenglünen (the glow of the Alps) is a leitmotif, which reflects the fascination and influence that the alpine world has on people. Director Jürg Fankhauser will take the audience on an emotional

journey through the centuries. The production begins with the German composer Felix Mendelssohn, who visited Männlichen-Schwinget in 1831. Later, the great patron of Grindelwald, Gottfried Strasser, comes on the scene; the fire of 1892 plays a role and, again later of course, the myth of the Eiger North Face - the „Murder Wall“. A MOUNTAIN FARMER WITH A MULTI-FACETED JOB

Marianne Wyss from Burglauenen has a multi-faceted life. She is not only a farmer but works as a ski instructor, in hospitality, as a milk controller, and in between all that, as a gardener. Having so many different jobs, is not really that unusual in the world of mountain farming.

ultitasking is a term one normally associates with the job of a manager, or perhaps with those of a working mother, but not necessarily with farming. However, especially in mountain farming, it is perfectly natural for family members to undertake several jobs at the same time; having to be flexible in this environment is vital, as so much work is dependent on the seasons and being available to juggle different tasks at the same time. Given her background, Marianne Wyss does not think it at all outof-the ordinary for her life to consist of so many activities. In winter she does all the work required of being a farmer and several days a week takes to the mountain as a ski instructor, as well as working in a mountain restaurant. The long working days usually start early in the morning with the cows being milked and end with the evening milking.

Marianne is the official tenant of the farm. She runs it together with her parents, when they are able to help, as they are now past the age of retirement. Being a single woman, she has had to take on a variety of roles and full responsibility for the day-to-day work on the farm. For Marianne this is really not such a daunting challenge, as she had always wanted to be a farmer, and for the Wyss family, having the daughter taking over the farm was not in any way unusual. In fact the Wyss women have long been breaking tradition and Marianne’s mother was always the one sitting behind the wheel of the Aebi van during the summer haymaking – normally seen as the man’s role! Marianne says that „As a young girl, I went to career counselling and told them that I wanted to become a farmer, not a farmer’s wife, but a ‘career’ farmer.” At the time this was thought to be quite in-

appropriate, and it was only in later life that her dream became a reality. “Continuing to maintain a family farm through the generations is never easy and it depends a lot on the job and partner.” In her case, she completed an apprenticeship in a sports shop as a sales-woman. At the age of 18, she trained to be a ski instructor which gave her a job outside of the farm. Marianne, a lover of flowers and plants, also worked part-time at a local garden nursery. Marianne believes that having had these other interests outside of her normal work at the farm had many advantages. „As a young woman, I had tremendous freedom, travelled a lot and was able to do what I wanted. When I wasn’t travelling, I still returned to the farm and helped.” Today she has much more responsibility with the full-time management of the farm but even so she appreciates her independence. During the summer Marianne only has one employee on the farm and it is always a huge challenge to find the right person for the job. Alpine farming has changed a lot over the years and there is a lot more pressure on farmers. Today the same land has to bring in more money than it did eight or ten years ago. So intellect and astuteness are needed. According to Marianne, depending on the season, it is important to decide strategically when to sell products due to price fluctuations. Yet for Marianne, it is not all about the money but the balance of life. One cannot be achieved without the other, and for farmers, most will also have other jobs, such as ski instructing, outside of the farm

to supplement income. „The best thing about farming is to be able to walk over the land and see it grow”, says Marianne. That only works if you make the right decisions regarding nature and the environment. Sustainable farming with a high regard for animal welfare is important. There is a saying “One cannot doubt when people say, the cattle are like the master – when everything in nature and life is balanced, then you can be successful“ explains Marianne. SUMMER GEMEL SLEDGING IN SUMMER Over 100 years ago the Velogemel, a mixture between bicycle and sledge, was invented in Grindelwald. For Andreas Caluori it seemed very obvious to make further adaptations to this means of transportation and he, therefore, brought the Summer Gemel to life. The sled with a big wheel at the front and two small ones at the back, as well as a seat and brake, is easy to control and allows for sledding fun in the middle of summer. The Summer Gemel allows you to free-wheel at a leisurely pace through the alpine meadows; feeling the wind in your hair, and smelling the fresh scent of cows in the pasture. Early summer in 2020 will see the Summer Gemel runs open after the reconstruction of the cable car lift Grindelwald-Männlichen. On the Männlichen, the Pit Crew initiate the pilots on the art of free-wheel tobogganing, before the ride begins down towards Holenstein on the mountain paths. „It‘s not about the speed, but about the enjoyment,“ says Summer-Gemel inventor Andreas Caluori. EIGER ROCK & FOLK FESTIVAL In July Grindelwald celebrates its own summer festival with live bands, bar service and food trucks. The Eiger Rock & Folk Festival will take place over two days in the summer of 2019. Friday 5th July 2019 will be all about rock music and Saturday 6th July 2019 will be dedicated to folk music. The Grindelwald musician, Daniel Kandlbauer, co-organizer and co-initiator of the Eiger Rock & Folk, has brought together several bands from the rock scene on-board for Grindelwald; such as QL, The Two Romands and Frost&Fog. On Saturday, the folk bands take to the stage. The Irish formation Nantathren, Adamo with Swiss folk rock, and a local group with Schwyzerörgeli will perform. EIGERTOUR HIKE & FLY ADVENTURE RACE IN THE AIR Grindelwald has already made a name for itself as a true Mecca for various sports. One of the newest, in the series of sports events, is the Eigertour Hike & Fly. This is a competition in which athletes use paragliders to fly to various points around Grindelwald. If the conditions are not good enough for flying then the participants will move on foot. About a dozen mountain huts have to be visited. The Second Edition of this multi-day race will take place between the 10th and 13th July 2019 and, well in advance, 73 athletes from 14 different nations, have already registered! When the First Edition took place in the summer of 2018, only 34 people actually participated. There are two categories: “Pros” and “Challengers”.
