THE PIONEERING SPIRIT OF GRINDELWALD

O

ne hundred and eleven years ago, the Wetterhorn gondola in Grindelwald was the first cable car in the world to go into operation. This bold structure has always fascinated me, and even more so, as I got to know its history much more closely. At the end of the 1980s, the GRIWA GROUP was allowed to participate in the renovation of the mountain station. It is situated on a steep mountain slope just above a practically vertical sloping rock face. When we looked at the logistics, I was wondering how in the past, the handling of materials could have been accomplished – only with mules and manpower! At the same time the train on the Jungfrauloch was built. Equally a testimony to foresight, obstinacy and courage. Where would Grindelwald be today without the pioneers of those bygone years? In the course of Grindelwald’s history, there have been periods in which a spirit of management has been felt to be other than one of positive activity. In particular, investment in the hotel industry was partially neglected, and so today there is a great necessity to take action in order to close the gaps. This phase always reminds me that one should stay being an entrepreneur and not a ‘drifter’. Fortunately, there are interesting hotel projects currently under construction in Grindelwald, which we hope will soon be implemented. In addition, I see a similar pioneering spirit as that of a hundred years ago, behind the soon to be completed V-Bahn project. The fact that a private railway is investing nearly half a billion francs in a modern infrastructure is a sign of great dedication to Grindelwald and the Jungfrau region. I am convinced, that through this, there is an increasing attractiveness in other areas; be it real estate, the hotel industry, or everyday life. I am, therefore, inviting you dear friends and guests on a journey through the Grindelwald Magazine, to get to know this diverse region even better, and to invest in it. For this, I thank you very much indeed!

GOOD-BYE TO THE OLD GGM

CABLECAR HISTORY LIVE FROM GRINDELWALD The extensive investment in Grindelwald’s cable car system is now taking shape. The construction work for the V-Bahn is in full swing. The first stage is the new cable-car to the Männlichen, which will come into operation in December 2019. It will replace the over 40 year-old red cable cars that have shaped the image of the valley for a long time – a look behind the scenes of the last days of operation for the old GGM.

ABOVE: It is still 34 days until the last day of operation of the old GGM, which is also the last working day of Christian Teuscher - he retires after 32 ½ years at GGM.

W

ritten on the top sheet of a small pile of papers, which have been hammered onto the wall of the kiosk with a thick nail, is the number 34. In the evening, Christian Teuscher is going to tear off the piece of paper revealing the next number which is 33. It is the end of February and Teuscher is counting the last days of the cable-car lift Grindelwald-Männlichen (GGM). The lift, which has been in operation for over 40 years, will run until the end of March 2019 and then it is over – forever. The next chapter in the operation of the cable-car on Männlichen has already begun. In the summer of 2018, the ground breaking for the construction of the new cable-car to Männlichen, as well as to the Eiger Glacer, was started. Outside the valley-station there is a big hole and a lot of digging and building work is going on. Handling a large construction site in addition to the on-going ski operations requires an almost artistic skill in juggling everything. Whilst the skiers are trudging past the construction site, with their skis, on their way to the cable-car, lorries are delivering reinforcing iron from the other side, excavators work on the site and a crane is working with its long arm. Meanwhile, Daniel Zihlmann, CEO of the GGM,

has become accustomed to the situation. Indeed, it is quite load and dirty in the station building and in the offices but he says, “I admire the teams that are working here. So far, every challenge gets resolved with good planning and flexibility, and the guests are, for the most part, understanding of the situation. There are hardly any more complaints now that things are moving forward with the new cable-car.”

ABOVE: „The old cable car has done a good job,“ says Adi Kaufmann, technical director of the GGM. „But now we are looking forward to the new one!“

GOOD-BYE TO THE OLD GGM

ABOVE: They have also learned to love the GGM red cable cars: Ski guest Uli Stählin from Munich with his children Henri and Ben (right).

In fact, the old red and yellow cable-cars now look quite old-fashioned. They evoke much of the charm of the 1970’s – a pleasure for retro fans, but looking at it for purely practical reasons, the lift system is no longer effective. The cable-cars only go 14 km per hour, which is why the trip to the Männlichen seemed to go on for ever. The out-dated technology sometimes required complicated work for the operators. Capacity and comfort for the guests also no longer corresponded with the ‘spirit of the time’.

later, in December 2020. In total, 470 million Swiss Francs will be invested in the V-Bahn project. On this sunny ski day, Christian Teuscher,

who looks after the valley-station, sits in the pay kiosk, whilst his colleague controls the entry and exit of the cable cars. Patiently, Teuscher answers questions from visitors who are pushing through the turnstile to the cable-cars. At the same time, he is keeping an eye on the monitor in his small office, which displays the sequence and position of the incoming cable-cars. A coloured light indicates when a cable-car approaches the station. When the pieces of paper on the wall arrive at zero, he will also say goodbye. Teuscher will be retiring after thirty-two and a half years at GGM. “I am going to leave the cable-car” he says, whilst adjusting his Stöckli cap, with a smile. “That’s okay, I have lived for many years with the cable-car” he says. “Now is a good time to go.” The old lift meant tedious and extra work for the employees in many areas. When it opened in December 1978, it was praised as a technical sensation – automatically opening doors and the gentle breaking on arriving at the station, were a complete novelty. At the middle station, Holstein, Adi Kaufmann,

BELOW: Sämi Burgener, plant manager Holenstein, overlooking check-in.

Replacing the system was discussed for a long time. Finally a joint project resulted - the V-Bahn will now be accomplished together with the Jungfraubahn. The solution contains two new branches, a new 10 person cable-car will start from the new terminal in Grindelwald Grund to the Männlichen and a new 3S cable-car going to the Eiger Glacier. At the same time, a new railway station is being created, the Grindelwald Terminal of the Bernesse Oberland Railway, which will allow direct access to the public transport. The new lift to Männlichen will open on 14th December 2019. The Eiger Glacier, one year

technical director of GGM, explains how the new 10 person cable-car is going to change the daily routine of the work-force. “The change is going to be great for everyone” he says. “But we have enough time to acquaint ourselves with the new technology before the opening in December.” For example, the cable-cars used to have to be rolled-out of the garage every morning with the old GGM and this alone took four people. Now, the new lift will automatically put the cable-cars back into their ‘garage’. Like many other GGM employees, Mr Kaufmann does not mourn the old lift operations but he does have high praise for the old drive-system. “It has been in use for over 40 years without any major repairs” he notes. There were significantly more problems with the steering mechanism, which had reached the limits of its usage and had the staff worried. “We were always worried that a sudden defect would occur and that we would not be able to fix it” he says. From this perspective,

everyone is going to be relieved when the days of the old GGM come to an end without any serious incident. The ride up to the mountain station on Männlichen still conveys a lot of the goodold feeling of the GGM. The gigantic view of the Eiger North Face looks almost wilder behind the scratched windows than it does on most of the glossy calendar pictures. As a passenger, one is well protected in the cable-car and yet, always a part of the surroundings. It is always either too cold or too hot but nevertheless you have time, and some more! to talk, think, sleep, read, or to simply let the Ricola sweets (which you received at the counter in the valley) melt on the tongue. The journey is a constant jerking and swaying, not uncomfortable, but always present. The GGM was famous from its construction; not just because of new technical elements but also because it was the longest cable-car in Europe, with a distance of 6 kilome-

ABOVE: „I grew up with the old gondolas,“ says Hänsel Brunner, head of the ski school Männlichen. With the new cable car, his commute will be shorter.

FACTS ABOUT THE V-BAHN The new 10-person cable-car to Männlichen will be opened on 14 December 2019 as part of the V-Bahn project. At the same time, another part of the project goes into operation - the public transport station Grindelwald Terminal. The new stop for the Bernese Oberland Railway allows direct access to the valley station of the new GGM and, in a next phase, to the valley station of the Eigerexpress 3S lift. The entire terminal with shops, bistros, and ski lockers, as well as a garage with 1000 parking spaces, will go into operation at the same time as the opening of the Eigerexpress, on the 12 December 2020.The Eigerexpress will take passengers up to the Eiger Glacier in just 15 minutes and thus substantially shorten the travel time to the Jungfraujoch. The modern 3S-lift has 44 gondolas with 28 seats each – transporting 2400 people per hour. The new lift from Grindelwald Grund to Männlichen will double capacity with up to 1800 people an hour being transported in 20 minutes instead of the previous 30 minutes or so – making it easier and more attractive for skiers to completely ski down into the valley. Thanks to the efficiency of the new lift, long waiting times should be totally eliminated and it is expected that skiers will be able to spread-out all over the Grindelwald ski area far more effectively.

Five weeks later, it‘s the 3rd of April – Day Zero on Christian Teuscher‘s pile of papers is over. Now, its time for nostalgia: All 230 cable-cars of the old GGM are lined up in the parking area next to the Grindelwald Grund construction site, and are waiting to be picked up by their future owners. “The cable-cars went like hot cakes” says Daniel Zihlmann, CEO of GGM. He received around 1500 enquiries and could have sold the old cable-cars several times over. For the happy buyers, it is therefore a special feeling to have got a piece of cable-car history. Some save a piece of childhood history for them-

THE PERFECT TRAINING GROUND ON THE DOORSTEP

Can a climb of 1000 m really be done in less than 40 minutes? Not a problem for professional ski alpinist Werner Marti, multiple World Champion, who has the ideal training conditions right on his doorstep, in his home village of Grindelwald, both in summer and winter.

A

s soon as Mrs Holle, from the fairy-tale, shakes her pillows over Grindelwald for the first time in autumn, Werner Marti goes into ski mode. Starting in November, the 29-year-old gets into his ski touring outfit practically every day and climbs the mountains around Grindelwald. For Marti, this is more than a hobby as, since the winter of 2016-2017, he has been a professional ski alpinist. „From the end of October to the end of April I only train on skis“ he explains. And this he can do almost from his front door! Since childhood, apart from a few years spent at a Commercial College in the Jura, the Grindelwalder has been living here in the middle of the village (his parents run a household and hardware shop on the main road). “For me it is my great luck to live in the midst of this magnificent mountain environment. Grindelwald is an ideal place for training and to refuel my energy,” enthuses the wiry Bernese Oberländer.

A keen sportsman since childhood In winter, Werner Marti participates in both National and International ski mountaineering competitions. On average, he travels two weekends a month; mainly in Europe, where most of the World Cup and, often the World Championship, events take place. After the intensive competition phases he looks forward to the regular training sessions in the ‘glacier’ village. He designs and plans his own training programme. „I know my own body well and have a lot of experience” explains Marti – who has been practicing competitive sports since his youth. At the beginning, he competed as a cross-country skier in the junior category, but after completing his job training, he switched to touring skis. He was infected with the ‘ski touring virus’ by his elder brother Marcel, who participated in his first ski touring race in 1999 and was then a member of the Swiss National Team for many years.

Powder snow is the cherry on the top Werner Marti is in top form at the moment. With his three World Champion Titles, from 2017 and 2019, he is one of the best ski alpinists in the World. In winter at competition speed, he needs less than forty minutes for a 1000 m. He prefers the pure ascent races, also called verticals, which is an individual race. “This is where I can use my strengths to their best.” He competes in long-distance races such as the Patrouille des Glaciers, or the Trofeo Mezzalama, in a team, which is a welcome change for him. In terms of equipment, he is supported by several suppliers and also receives financial support from local sponsors and Schweizer Sporthilfe. Marti admits that, “ski mountaineering is a marginal sport and living from it is not easy.” But not a day goes by when he does not regret becoming a professional athlete. “I really enjoy sports so it is great that I can do it,” he enthuses. For the next few years, Werner still wants to be on the road as a professional sportsman and to see what else he can achieve. “I’m very motivated at the moment and after the double victory at the World Championships in March 2019, the victory at the Patrouille des Glaciers would still be a dream” confesses the ambitious Grindelwalder. Nevertheless, it is clear to him that, “I will not be a professional athlete forever.” For this reason, he completed the training necessary to be an Administrator for accounting. “Working with numbers is a lot of fun for me,” says Werner. For everything else, he just wants to wait and see. It is important for everything to live in the ‘moment’, to enjoy the training in Grindelwald, the view

GRIWA GROUP

GRIWA GROUP ONE COMPANY MANY SERVICES

G

RIWA PLAN AG has developed over many years into a group of companies now covering a wide spectrum of services. At the beginning of 2017, Markus Friedli, Company Founder, gave up operational responsibility and set up a number of subsidiaries within the existing Company - GRIWA TREUHAND AG, GRIWA ARCHITEKTUR AG, GRIWA RENT AG, GRIWA INTERIOR AG (formerly Wohncenter von Allmen) and

the HOTEL ASPEN. All from the same group, clients receive various services; from planning through to construction, administration and marketing to rentals, as well as furnishing and accommodation. It is now possible to find new branches of the individual companies outside of Grindelwald, and all under one roof, in the newly reconstructed Jungfrau Centre at Interlaken East train station.

THE DREAM OF OWNING A PROPERTY IN THE MOUNTAINS

When buying a property, various legal aspects are important. Since 1995, GRIWA TREUHAND AG has been active in the real estate sector, and makes a point of offering good advice when buying or selling a property.

W

ho does not dream of a home in the Alps? For over 25 years, GRIWA TREUHAND AG has been involved in the marketing and administration of real estate. The Grindelwald Company has grown into what is, today, highly regarded as the centre for the buying and selling along with the rental of properties throughout the Bernese Oberland. GRIWA TREUHAND will personally help you to realise your mountain property dream. When buying a property in the mountains there are various legal aspects which have to be considered. At the federal level, the second home law and the restrictions on the purchase of real estate by persons living abroad, the so-called Lex Koller, must be observed. At a mu-

nicipal level, both laws can be even stricter. So there may be some other restrictions which can occur; such as the EWAP regulation of the municipality Grindelwald. Therefore it is recommended to get precise clarification by a real-estate professional before. The Secondary Home Act (ZWG) came into force on the 1st January 2016. It regulates the construction of any new apartments, as well as the use or conversion of existing apartments, in communities where there are more than 20% of second homes. Most places in the Bernese Oberland belong in this category, so it is not allowed to construct additional second homes. However, a replacement con-

struction is allowed, which can be increased by up to 30 per cent. Moreover, a building can also be divided into different apartments, but in this case it is prohibited to extend the existing ground-area. It is still possible for the building of first-time homes for locals. The restriction is entered in the land register and transferred to the next buyer when the property is sold. This has a considerable influence on the achievable selling price. Before 2016, the Grindelwald municipality had already introduced a scheme with the initial housing share plan (EWAP) to create affordable housing for the local population. The minimum share of housing for the local population is 35 per cent of the gross floor area of a building intended for residential use. This restriction is noted in the land register and can be deleted after 25 years from the granting of the building permit. Similar regulations apply in other municipalities. A federal law called Lex Koller restricts the acquisition of land by people living abroad. The possibilities for foreigners to own land and property in Switzerland are therefore limited. In 2008, the Federal Council set the authorisation quota per year at 1,500 units. Since 2009, the number of permits has been decreasing steadily. If you do not have a Swiss passport, you are a foreigner and need a Lex Koller permit. However, nationals of EU and EFTA countries who live in Switzerland and have a permanent residency, residence authorisation or short-stay permit (C, B or L permit) or third-country nationals with a valid residency permit (C permit) are legally treated the same as Swiss citizens. Such persons are not subject to the provisions of the Lex Koller. Source Diagram: GHR Rechtsanwälte, Muri Text: Sandro Bolton

GRIWA INTERIOR AG

YOUR SPECIALIST FOR FURNITURE& ROOMS

GRIWA INTERIOR has become a part of the GRIWA GROUP-Family. The former „Wohncenter von Allmen“ starts the next chapter at the trainstation Interlaken Ost.

A

lthough the Wohncenter von Allmen has only been a part of the GRIWA GROUP AG since 2016, von Allmen itself had been an established institution at its Interlaken East location for decades. The youngest child of the group has, therefore, the most celebrated tradition at the East train station. The furniture store maintained its operations during the entire construction period. On the 21st June 2019, following the transition phase, a new era will begin with a new name. In future, the Wohncenter von Allmen will act as GRIWA INTERIOR AG, without compromising the relationship to the traditional building. On the contrary, „Strong roots are the best prerequisite for a new start“ says GRIWA INTERIOR Managing Director Marco Niederberger. „We stick to the location, maintain the same values, but will rely on a new concept and new interior design ideas.“

The services offered by GRIWA INTERIOR cover the entire spectrum regarding furnishing; from consulting and throughout the design concept to delivery and installation. It is important for Marco Niederberger to always keep an eye on the whole, i.e. the interplay of spaces, colours, light and materials. „We always try to see the whole thing first and then take care of the details“ he says. Customers are therefore introduced to a suitable furnishing solution in three steps. At the beginning there is the question about which atmosphere you want to live or work in. What should the style be of the furniture - alpine or urban, opulent or reduced, artisanal or industrial, open or protective? And what are the requirements of the room? Which functions must be fulfilled? As soon as these questions have been clarified, a concept for materials and shapes, colours and light is worked out. As soon as the plan-

ning foundation has been worked out, the right products can be determined in a third step. The product range of GRIWA INTERIOR is aimed at private customers who are looking for home furnishing solutions as well as for business customers, as the sense of space also plays an important role in offices, sales rooms, and public buildings.

EIGERNESS - THE SHOP Am ocri patuisquam,

THE CHARACTER OF GRINDELWALD IS REFLECTET BY A SHOP

For more than a year the Eigerness shop has been offering a variety of local products for sale. The ‘Original from Grindelwald’ line has been warmly welcomed by both visitors and locals.

G

rindelwald - to touch, to wrap up and take away, as a gift or to have melting on your tongue. In the Eigerness shop, located in the centre of the village, all sorts of products are for sale; from alpine cheese, bread, sausages to tea, and even mountain hay soap – everything is ‘Original Grindelwald’. Even the creators are amazed by the variety on offer. Birgit Fritz-Egger, managing director of the Eigerness Assocation says, “The idea for a shop with local products has existed for a long time”. The project was suddenly able to take shape when a business pre-

mises became available, next to the commercial centre for the Coop, and several enthusiasts for the project were found. A co-operative was created and major suppliers, such as the Eigermilch AG, the Ringgenberg bakery and Boss the butcher are now all a part of it. Other traders or private individuals are also free to supply products to the Eigerness Der Laden (The Eigerness Shop). „Anyone can bring a product“ explains Bruno Kaufmann, President of the Eigerness Association, „and the co-operative members can

24

then assess whether it fulfils the criteria to be sold in the shop.“ A ‘Genuine Eigerness’ quality mark is granted to products whose raw materials either come from Grindelwald, or are produced locally or, that correspond to a traditional type of production. Cheese occupies a very special place in the shop, not surprisingly so, as the ‘gold of the farmers’ has been a valuable product since time immemorial. Grindelwald farmers and Alpine herdsmen have developed special production skills over the years, and for gourmets the large cheese counter is a revelation – not least because every Alpine cheese has its own different taste. With all the cheeses gathered together, each one can be tasted and have an explanation to the reasons behind what makes a good cheese – the care taken in the production, the grass that the cows eat, the way it is stored, and even maybe the character of the farmer. Also available in the shop are other traditional culinary produce such as a variety of different breads, sausages, yogurts, or fondue made in Grindelwald, dried fruit, tea, jams, honey, beer, chocolate and much more. When it comes to craftwork, the Grindelwald sleigh or the Velogemel (snow-bike) are, of course, a must-have! But there are also hand-made cushions, knitted scarves, bags made from advertising canvas, art cards, screen-printed T-shirts, felt shoes, children’s clothing, or candle holders made of stone. Anyone looking for Grindelwald’s cultural heritage, will find numerous CDs by Grindelwald musicians and also a variety of books relating to the valley. The shop has also created a connection to the people who are behind the products with regular promotions and exhibitions held on current topics. The current programme can be found at www.eigerness. ch or in their leaflet (which is available in the shop). The Eigerness Association was founded in 2005, which was a godsend for Birgit Fritz Egger and Bruno Kaufmann. „Right from the beginning we tried to bring people from trade, tourism and agriculture together, and to showcase what we can offer in Grindelwald. Now we can see the results of this in the shop.” says Fritz-Egger. Although the term ‘Eigerness’ is derived from ‘Wellness’ it also refers to a very basic feeling of well-being to be found at the foot of the Eiger North Face. Both locals and visitors have benefited from the quality associated with the term ‘Eigerness’ or ‘Original Grindelwald’ extremely well. The idea is not only a socially binding one but it is paying off economically as well. Hans-Peter Baumann, member of the co-operative and Chairman of Eigermilch AG, says „We are one step closer to achieving our goal of promoting local sales. Eigermilch AG was founded ten years ago with the goal of not only selling the milk from the valley, but also processing it locally. That‘s how we keep adding value to the valley and this helps the region enormously.“ ‘Eigerness Der Laden’ is now an extended framework for this idea - a real showcase for all that is being created in Grindelwald.

WETTERHORN CABLE CAR

THE WETTERHORN CABLE CAR BENCHMARK AND HISTORIC MONUMENT

It has been 111 years since the first cable car, with the most modern safety elements, was put into operation in Grindelwald. The Wetterhorn cable car was a sensation; but unfortunately due to World War I it rapidly declined as a tourist attraction.

H

igh above Grindelwald, perched on a sloping grassy strip directly above a rock face, stands a strange building – completely redundant. The shoebox look-alike with a concrete foot which protrudes into the void is neither an elaborate residence nor a mountain house, but in fact the old mountain station of the Wetterhorn cable car, which went into operation in 1908. Today it has no function at all but in its time it was revolutionary. The Wetterhorn cable car was the first aerial cable car in Switzerland which not only met all the safety regulations but was also way ahead of its time. The people of Grindelwald have preserved this mountain station as a symbol of pioneering spirit and a belief in technical progress. They have renovated it and ensured that the building, or parts of it, are prevented from falling down the rock face.

The Wetterhorn cable car was opened 111 years ago on the 27th July 1908. For the first time a broader public were able to access and admire the panoramic views from the Enge mountain station. Previously this spectacle could only be enjoyed by those who were fit enough to take the challenging path up to the Glecksteinhütte. The new attraction was a success from day one and shortly after the opening, the local newspaper, Echo von Grindelwald reported “This latest attraction of the season has been well received and almost all the cable cars are full. The initial fears and horrors have not been substantiated. The passengers enter cable cars which equate to the first class train carriages of the Federal railways. After having enjoyed the magnificent view from Enge of the whole glorious Grindelwald valley, the magnificent glacier and the majestic Schreckhorn

and Lauteraarhorn groups, the brave set off on their return journey with great satisfaction, either over the glacier or back in the cable car.”

last monthly report of September 1914 reported 38 ascents and 38 descents. Initially, the cable car ran with a restricted timetable, but in 1915 it was completely shut down. Initially, the site was still supervised and maintained, but after a rock fall in 1924 destroyed the lower station, no one could muster the strength and finances to revive the Wetterhorn cable car. In the summer of 1934 the plant was broken down.

Even though there were several initial attempts in Europe to construct cable cars to transport passengers, the Wetterhorn cable car was the first of its kind and at that time a modern revolution. Experts agree that the lift already then had all the safety precautions that are still required, and a part of the basic equipment of cable cars The renovated mountain station, even though it is not accessible, today. (See for example the cable car Lexica chapter – www.berg- and an original cabin with a replica drive system, are the only tebahnen.org). For the most extreme emergency, the passengers could have been rescued from a stopped cabin with an emergency one. The Wetterhorn cable car was planned and initiated by the German engineer Wilhelm Feldmann. He wanted to achieve projects, which he had patented on aerial cable cars, in different countries. In Grindelwald he found a solicitous ear, although there were also numerous hurdles to overcome, until the concession finally arrived in the summer of 1908. In 1904 the construction work by the „Bergaufzug, Patent Feldmann, Aktiengesellschaft“ had already begun. Originally two sections had been planned, but the second from the Enge mountain station up to the Gleckstein hut was never achieved. In 1905 engineer Feldmann mysteriously died from a shot from his own hunting rifle. The official announcement was that it was an accident; but it was speculated on whether Feldmann had taken his own life. Despite this misfortune and several other setbacks, such as an avalanche which thundered into a group of workers, and a lack of legislation for a means of transport, such as a reversible track, which all created many new uncertainties, the work did continue. The Wetterhorn cable car came to prominence within the first few years of the opening as a ‘technical miracle’. In the guest book of the Enge Restaurant (which was located a few steps from the mountain station in the former construction area) guests from many different countries signed the book. From the beginning the spectacular lift ride was popular but it did not last long. After the outbreak of the First World War, the number of guests fell dramatically. The

The effects of Brexit on British nationals in Switzerland

B

rexit – what now?

on requirements have been met. Persons becoming unemployed in Switzerland may receive a daily unemployment allowance and may stay in Switzerland during this period. Cross-border commuters and persons holding resident status in terms of AFMP may continue to purchase and hold real estate.

Longstanding and intensive relations exist between Switzerland and the United Kingdom (UK). The bilateral Agreement on the Free Movement of persons between the EU and Switzerland (AFMP) applies to the right of residence of British nationals in Switzerland. The decision of the British electorate on 23 June 2016 to leave the EU (Brexit) has the consequence that after Brexit the AFMP between Switzerland and the UK will no longer apply and new agreements will have to be made between Switzerland and the UK. The original cut-off date for Brexit was 29 March 2019, which has been postponed to 31 October 2019 for the time being. At the time of writing, it is still unclear whether, how and when Brexit will occur.

The agreement does not apply to British nationals who enter Switzerland post-Brexit i.e. post AFMP for employment purposes. From that point in time they are considered third-country nationals and are subject to the relevant quota. The Federal Council has set up a quota of 3’500 permits for British nationals up to the end of 2019. In addition, the Federal Council has decided that neither the visa requirement nor national priority shall apply.

Provided that the EU and the UK could agree on the withdrawal agreement this initiates a transition period that will last until 31 December 2020. In case of such a Brexit, the AFMP will continue to apply during the transition period, which may be extended by 1 to 2 years. However, the AFMP remains applicable even in a further postponement of the cut-off date. On the other hand, in the event of a no-deal Brexit without a withdrawal agreement, the AFMP only applies until the cut-off date, i.e. currently until 31 October 2019. What follows is unclear.

Nothing has changed for British nationals working (and living) in Switzerland pre-Brexit. According to the agreement on the rights of citizens, the state competent in matters of social security at the point in time of Brexit retains responsibility. More particularly, no loss of entitlements need be feared. Employees of international corporations who have made contributions into the British system “NI” up to the time of Brexit retain their entitlement. Access to health care in Switzerland continues to be guaranteed.

The situation is clearer for British nationals who already reside in Switzerland and have acquired rights and obligations under the current AFMP. Mind the gap – that is what the Federal Council called their strategy adopted in October 2016. It is their aim to ensure that existing mutual rights and obligations held by the UK and Switzerland continue beyond Brexit. To this end Switzerland and the UK concluded five new agreements which will come into effect as soon as the bilateral agreements (and thus also the AFMP) between Switzerland and the UK no longer apply. The five new agreements included an agreement covering the rights of citizens.

As soon as the AFMP no longer applies to relations between Switzerland and the UK, the 1968 Bilateral Social Security Agreement between Switzerland and the UK will probably come into effect again – at least for as long as no other solution is found. However, this Social Security Agreement only includes pensions insurance. Another important difference is that it provides for a division of the obligation for social insurance and thus a division of social security jurisdiction in two states. Thus, an employee working 40% of the time in the UK and 60% in Switzerland will be insured for his income in Switzerland by AHV and British income will be insured in the UK.

Residence

The agreement on the rights of citizens only protects such rights as Swiss or British nationals have acquired in terms of the AFMP up to the cut-off date or the expiry of a transitional period or extension. Thus, British nationals who gained resident status under AFMP and are registered in a municipality do not have to take any action. That also applies to cross-border commuter permits. The existing residency entitlements remain unchanged if the AFMP‘s admissi-

WORLD SNOW FESTIVALTEMPORARY ART At the World Snow Festival in Grindelwald snow sculptures are created by teams from different countries. From the 20th to the 25th January 2020, the village centre will once again be transformed into a brilliant open-air art gallery. During this time, it is possible to watch the teams, whilst they transform the metre-high blocks of snow into all sorts of huge figures, objects or fantasy creations. Apart from water, snow and ice, no other additional aids are permitted. At the end of the week, the sculptures are judged by both participating artists and the viewing public. On Friday and Saturday evening the sculptures are illuminated with coloured lights so that the whole open-air ice museum becomes like a fairy-tale setting. www.worldsnowfestival.com Photos: David Birri

WINTER ACTIVITIES

SLEDGING OUTDOOR FUN WITHOUT HASSLE Tobogganing is a must-do event on any winter trip to Grindelwald. In almost any weather, it is a perfect addition, or alternative, to a day on skis and promises a lot of fun for the whole family. There are numerous toboggan runs around Grindelwald and throughout the Jungfrau region – all with the most beautiful panoramic views. Among them is the longest sledge run in Europe – from the Faulhorn over the Busalp down into Grindelwald. The route from the top station to the Faulhorn leads uphill via a well-groomed winter hiking trail; making the trip a real mountain hike with a summit experience. If you are adventurous, then try a nocturnal toboggan run on the Eiger Run. www.grindelwald.swiss Photo: Grindelwald Tourism

VELOGEMEL WORLD CUP - BECOME A WORLD CHAMPION! The Velogemel, a Grindelwald invention, is a mix between a sledge and a bicycle. More than a hundred years ago, Christian BĂźhlmann, wagon maker and carpenter, was looking for an easier way to get around during the winter. Mr BĂźhlmann came up with the snow bicycle - which is to this day unique to Grindelwald. Every year in winter, the Velogemel World Championships take place on the Bussalp above Grindelwald. The next event will take place on Sunday the 9th February 2020. Not only can lovers of the sport compete in this legendary race, but also anyone who has a sudden impulse to participate, may do so. There is probably no other event where it is so easy to compete in a World Cup! So come and test your skills and luck! The snow bicycles can be rented at various locations for test drives. www.velogemelgrindelwald.com www.velogemel.ch Photo: Grindelwald Tourism

WINTER ACTIVITIES

MARTINSLOCH ON THE EIGER A RARE NATURAL SPECTACLE For only a few days during the winter, a very special and natural spectacle can be witnessed in Grindelwald. At around mid-day the sun shines precisely through a small hole at the eastern end of the Eiger, below the Ostegg. This special event is celebrated by Grindelwald Tourism on 16th January 2020 at 12.00 o’clock at the church. The legend about the Martinsloch of Grindelwald (Martin’s Hole) can be found in the book Challigroose and Muggestutz. It is said that a long time ago the Mettenberg and the Eiger were connected. Behind them lay a vast glacier lake. From time to time water would break through and, in a devastating flood, make its way down to the valley. Martin, a tall and strong man, lived at the foot of the mountain in a cave but one day he climbed up to the rocks to remedy the situation. According to legend, he leaned his back against the side of the Mettenberg and put his feet and stick against the Eiger. A huge cracking noise resounded down the valley as the mountains moved apart, finally giving way to a large outflow. The hole he had pushed through the Eiger with the stick, and the imprint of his backside on the Mettenberg, bear witness to Martin’s tremendous show of strength. THE WINTER FINAL TREASURE HUNT AT THE END OF THE SEASON

At the end of the winter season the Grindelwald First ski area is taken over by the gold miners or ‘snow’ miners. For the lucky finder, the Jungfrau Railways hide thirty treasure chests in the snow to mark the big final event of the winter. The next treasure hunt will take place over the weekend of 27th and 28th March 2020. On a large snow-field, young and old alike, can tuck their shovels under their arm and dig their way to the coveted chests. And, for those with endurance and luck, they will receive their prize at the end-of-season party in Grindelwald. There are also additional prizes drawn for participants. www.thewinterfinal.ch Photo: Martin Keller
