Gwinnett County is the second-most populous county in the state of Georgia, and boasts of a population over 800,000 people and includes the cities of Auburn, Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Snellville, Sugar Hill and Suwanee. Lawrenceville, which is home to Georgia Gwinnett College is the county seat. The county contains some of the best entertainment options in the Atlanta metro area, including Aurora Theatre, which boasts of some of the top stage shows, and Gwinnett Arena, which has drawn in such acts as Justin Timberlake and Beyonce. For the sports fans, in addition to being close to major sports teams in Atlanta, Lawrenceville also has minor league teams in the Gwinnett Braves and Gwinnett Gladiators. For shoppers, Buford’s Mall of Georgia is the largest in the state of Georgia, and Lawrenceville’s Sugarloaf Mills offers unique dining and entertainment options like Atlanta’s largest Dave & Buster’s and Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament.

Lawrenceville is a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, which ranks as the ninth largest in the United States. In addition to being one of the most accessible cities to visit in the U.S., Atlanta also serves as the cultural and entertainment hub of the Southeast. The city was the host of the 1996 Olympics and boasts of major professional sports teams in the Braves, Falcons and Hawks. Other attractions include the world’s largest aquarium and a number of museums that highlight the historical significance of the city during both the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. The city also offers some of the best music, dining and shopping attractions in the country.

GRIZZLY ATHLETICS Pursuing

Georgia Gwinnett College founded its athletic office with the hiring of Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson on July 28, 2011, and over that time, the Grizzlies have become a dominant force in NAIA. The first athletic events took place with a soccer doubleheader against Tennessee Temple, which saw the men and women combine to beat the Crusaders 21-1. The impressive athletic achievements have continued as the men went on to win the Association of Independent Institutions Championship in their first year of eligibility in 2013, baseball advanced to the NAIA World Series and both men’s and women’s tennis claimed national championships. The 2013-14 academic year also saw 18 individuals earn All-America honors and each program finished the season either ranked or receiving votes in their respective NAIA national poll. The softball team earned the NAIA’s prestigious Champions of Character team award.

FACILITIES

The Grizzly Athletics Complex, complete with facilities for baseball, softball and soccer as well as a 25,000-square-foot administration building was completed in 2013. The complex, which is located adjacent to the main entrance to campus, was built in a step-like manner to take advantage of the natural topography and welcome the GGC community and visitors to campus. Grizzly Soccer Complex was the first to open and features a synthetic playing surface, a Daktronics scoreboard and ample bleacher and hillside seating. In the spring of 2013, both the baseball and softball teams opened their stadiums, which features climate-controlled press boxes, natural grass fields and full dugouts complete with restrooms. The baseball stadium seats 800, and the softball stadium can accommodate up to 600. The main athletics building hosts the bulk of the GGC coaching staffs and athletics administration. It boasts of locker rooms, conference rooms, a weight room, a sports medicine facility and a dedicated academic support center.

Head Coach Third Season Tennessee Temple ‘95 Four-time conference coach of the year and reigning Association of Independent Institutions Coach of the Year Steve DeCou is the first men’s soccer coach in Georgia Gwinnett College history. Totaling over 16 years of coaching experience, DeCou came to GGC in January of 2012. Just like his three previous head coaching stops, DeCou has led the Grizzlies to immediate success in their first two seasons of competition and now owns a 151-9916 career record. DeCou was named 2013 A.I.I. Coach of the Year in leading the Grizzlies to Georgia Gwinnett College’s first postseason tournament championship and first NAIA national tournament. In just the program’s second year overall and first eligible for postseason play, national rankings and awards, the Grizzlies catapulted to #9 in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Thanks to an athletic offensive attack and physical defensive play, the Grizzlies raced their way to a 15-5 overall record, including a 13-4 mark in the regular season. The signature win of the year came in November as GGC hosted its first-ever postseason tournament. The Grizzlies dispatched national #3 Ashford (Iowa) by a 3-0 score to claim the 2013 Association of Independent Institutions championship on their home field in Lawrenceville, in their first crack at the trophy. The Grizzlies broke into the national Top 25- the first GGC squad to ever do so- back in September, and maintained high national vote totals the remainder of the season. Georgia Gwinnett’s A.I.I. title sent the squad to the NAIA national tournament opening round, where a second-half penalty kick goal by host and #13 Embry-Riddle ended GGC’s season in a 1-0 loss. In his first year guiding the Grizzlies program in 2012, DeCou led GGC to a fantastic season in its inaugural campaign. The team posted a stellar 15-2-1 record, while going 7-1-1 at home in Lawrenceville. With less than eight months to recruit and field a team, create a schedule and launch his program, DeCou’s success surpassed expectations in year one. Georgia Gwinnett dominated its opponents with a 93-9 scoring advantage on the year. Senior goalkeeper Greg Hartley, a former NAIA All-American who chose to play his final collegiate season for DeCou after spending 2011 with him at Belhaven University,

allowed just eight goals all year in over 1,200 minutes for the Grizzlies. The GGC defense posted 11 shutouts on the season (including a string of five straight) and never allowed more than two goals in a game. DeCou also guided senior forward Tom Butler to a season that won’t soon be repeated. Butler scored 28 goals and piled up 65 points to establish his name in the Grizzly record books. Five different Grizzlies posted 20 or more points on the season for the GGC attack, while 13 separate players tallied a goal. The squad posted a 12-0 victory over Tennessee Temple University Opening Day on Aug. 25, and remained in charge all season long, reaching six and five-game winning streaks on the year. The Grizzlies’ lone home defeat came to #1-rated MRPI team Auburn Montgomery, as GGC battled AUM to a hard-fought 1-0 loss Oct. 6. The team opened its beautiful new synthetic turf field in the tussle, a place it would win its final four games of the year. DeCou’s 14 victories on the 2012 season tied for the second most of his career. DeCou came to GGC from Belhaven (Jackson, Miss.), where for the previous five years the Blazers were a national power. During his tenure at Belhaven, DeCou posted five consecutive winning seasons (66-23-7 overall), and he led the Blazers to the top 25 finishes in the final NAIA poll from 2009-2011, while the 2010 and 2011 teams ranked in the top 10. DeCou coached his teams to the Round of 16 in the NAIA National Tournament for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Six players were selected as NAIA All-Americans, 10 players were named Academic All-Americans, 22 players were All-Conference selections, one was awarded the 2010 SSAC Newcomer of the Year and one was named the 2011 SSAC Defensive Player of the Year. Prior to his time at Belhaven, DeCou spent 2004-2006 at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois, where he led the Trolls to a 27-28-4 record. His three year stint was highlighted by a 13-8-2 season in 2005 that saw Trinity Christian College selected to the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament.

From 2000-2003, DeCou served as head coach of Huntington College in Huntington, Indiana, guiding the Foresters to their first winning campaign in eight years in 2001. DeCou was the Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2010, following a 16-2-3 season, the 2008 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, following a 14-4-1 campaign and the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2005, following a 13-8-2 season. In addition to his involvement with NAIA soccer, DeCou spent three summers coaching in the United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League, serving as an assistant in 2006 and 2007 with the Chicago Fire Premier and as head coach of the Mississippi Brilla FC in 2008. The son of a high school football coach, DeCou’s earliest memories revolve around athletics, coaching and lessons learned from his father, and after a brief career detour, DeCou decided to follow in his father’s coaching footsteps. DeCou believes coaching at the college level is about impacting lives and helping young people learn skills that will enable them to become contributing members of society, and he is excited about the opportunity to build a program at a growing institution in a location with a great talent pool. DeCou is a graduate of Tennessee Temple University (Chattanooga, Tenn.) where he played soccer and earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education. He holds a master’s in sports medicine from the United States Sports Academy. He holds a USSF “A” license and earned the NSCAA Premier Diploma in January 2014. He has served as president of the NAIA Men’s Soccer Association Executive Committee and is a member of the NAIA Ratings Oversight Committee, NAIA National Tournament Selection Committee and NAIA National Tournament Games Committee. The move to Georgia Gwinnett brings DeCou closer to family as his wife, Amy, is originally from Georgia, and his parents are located in nearby Charleston, South Carolina. DeCou and Amy are proud parents of their daughter, Sadie Jane.

Assistant Coach Third Season Nazareth ‘03 With over 16 years of athletics experience as a coach and a player, Kevin May joined the first Georgia Gwinnett College men’s soccer staff as assistant coach in early 2012. May is actively engaged in recruiting efforts for the Grizzlies program and assists in game and practice preparation. He has immediately helped the Grizzlies achieve tremendous success over their first two seasons, with the team posting an overall 30-7-1 record. In just the program’s second year overall and first eligible for postseason play, national rankings and awards in 2013, the Grizzlies catapulted to #9 in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll with a 15-5 overall record, capturing Georgia Gwinnett College’s first postseason title in any sport and first trip to the NAIA national tournament. May and the Grizzlies posted a 15-2-1 mark during the program’s inaugural campaign in the fall of 2012. The coaching staff helped guide GGC to a 93-9 scoring advantage over its opponents on the year. Georgia Gwinnett went 7-1-1 at home on the season and posted 11 total shutouts, including a string of five in a row. The Grizzly offense featured 28goal scorer Tom Butler and five players who boasted 20 or more points, while the defense allowed one or fewer goals in 16 of 18 games. With under a year to prepare for the school’s first-ever intercollegiate athletics season, May helped the staff compose a terrific product on the field. In addition to his duties at GGC, he is a member of the USYSA Olympic Development Program Region III staff as he works with the top players in the southeast to select one of four regional teams in the country.

May spent the previous three years as the director of soccer operations at the University of Connecticut, where he focused on team travel, promotions, training and fundraising. He also leans on this experience at GGC. During May’s time at the University of Connecticut, the team received NCAA tournament bids every year and was consistently ranked among the top 10 teams in the country, including the entire 2010 season. Also, three players were selected as All Americans, four as Big East Players of the Year, 15 as All-Big East players and six as AllNortheast Region players, while six players were drafted by Major League Soccer and two players signed contracts overseas. May served as an assistant coach at Rochester Institute of Technology from 2006 - 2009, where he helped lead the team to an overall record of 23-23-6 in Division III competition. He also served as assistant coach at his alma mater, Nazareth College, during the 20042006 seasons. Additionally, May spent time coaching and directing for youth club and soccer camp programs, including the Rochester Futbol Club (2007-2009) in New York, Yuri Lavryenko Soccer in Rochester, New York (2007-2009), the East Hampton Soccer Club in East Hampton, Connecticut (2009-2011) and the Northeast United Premier Soccer Club in Storrs, Connecticut (2009-2011). As a former player, May was a four-year starter and a two-year captain, an All-Empire 8 selection in 2001 and 2002 and a regional All-American in 2002. May holds a bachelor’s of arts in political science from Nazareth College in Pittsford, New York, and he has his National Soccer Coaches Association of America coaching license.
