Georgia Gwinnett College derives its name from Gwinnett County, which is one of Georgia’s fastest-growing communities. The county is home to over 800,000 people and includes the cities of Auburn, Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Snellville, Sugar Hill and Suwanee. GGC is based out of Lawrenceville, which serves as the county seat. The county contains some of the best entertainment options in the Atlanta metro area, including Aurora Theatre, which boasts of some of the top stage shows, and Gwinnett Arena, which has drawn in such acts as Justin Timberlake and Beyonce. For the sports fans, in addition to being close to major sports teams in Atlanta, Lawrenceville also has minor league teams in the Gwinnett Braves and Gwinnett Gladiators. For shoppers, Buford’s Mall of Georgia is the largest in the state, and Lawrenceville’s Sugarloaf Mills offers unique dining and entertainment options like Atlanta’s largest Dave & Buster’s and Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament.

Lawrenceville is a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, which ranks as the ninth largest in the United States. In addition to being one of the most accessible cities to visit in the U.S., Atlanta also serves as the cultural and entertainment hub of the Southeast. The city was the host of the 1996 Olympics and boasts of major professional sports teams in the Braves, Falcons and Hawks. Other attractions include the world’s largest aquarium and a number of museums that highlight the historical significance of the city during both the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. The city also offers some of the best music, dining and shopping attractions in the country.

GRIZZLY ATHLETICS Georgia Gwinnett College began putting together its athletics department in 2011, and in that short amount of time, the school has become a dominant force in the NAIA.

The first athletic events took place with a soccer doubleheader against Tennessee Temple on Aug. 25, 2012, which saw the men and women combine to beat the Crusaders 21-1. The impressive athletic achievements have continued as the men went on to win the Association of Independent Institutions Championship in their first year of eligibility in 2013, baseball advanced to the NAIA World Series and both men’s and women’s tennis claimed national championships. The 2013-14 academic year also saw 18 individuals earn All-America honors and each program finished the season either ranked or receiving votes in their respective NAIA national poll. The softball team earned the NAIA’s prestigious Champions of Character team award.

FACILITIES

The Grizzly Athletics Complex, complete with facilities for baseball, softball and soccer as well as a 25,000-square-foot administration building, was completed in 2013. The complex, which is located adjacent to the main entrance to campus, was built in a step-like manner to take advantage of the natural topography and welcome the GGC community and visitors to campus. Grizzly Soccer Complex was the first to open and includes a synthetic playing surface, a Daktronics scoreboard and ample bleacher and hillside seating. In the spring of 2013, both the baseball and softball teams opened their stadiums, which feature climate-controlled press boxes, natural grass fields and full dugouts complete with restrooms. The baseball stadium seats 800, and the softball stadium can accommodate up to 600. The main athletics building hosts the bulk of the GGC coaching staffs and athletics administration. It boasts of locker rooms, conference rooms, a weight room, a sports medicine facility and a dedicated academic support center.

Head Coach Third Season Ohio State ‘89 Experienced coach and former player Domenic Martelli is the first women’s soccer coach in Georgia Gwinnett College history. He came to GGC in November 2011, following 18 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience, and has begun the Grizzlies’ program with great success. He now has 133 wins over his head coaching career, with a record of 133-117-28 over 14 seasons. The 2013 season saw Martelli and the Grizzlies earn the program’s first-ever ranking in the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll and a postseason berth in the first year of full eligibility as GGC went 14-4-1. The team finished with nine defensive shutouts to rank in the nation’s top 15 and went 8-2 on its home field during the regular season.Two of the team’s three regular season losses came against teams that finished in the final regular season poll’s top 15- including No. 2 Northwood (Fla.)- while the Grizzlies handed No. 10 St. Thomas (Fla.) its only tie of the season. Senior Jocelyn Baker took home Association of Independent Institutions Player of the Year honors and went on to become Georgia Gwinnett College’s first female All-American. The team prevailed in countless close games under Martelli’s direction, going into double-overtime five times and winning seven total one-goal games.The Grizzlies also experienced strong success against NCAA opponents for the second straight year, defeating Division II squads Young Harris (2-1 in OT), Georgia Southwestern (7-0) and West Georgia (1-0 in 2OT), while knocking off Division III squad Agnes Scott (2-1). Georgia Gwinnett earned the number three seed as it hosted the school’s first-ever postseason tournament, the 2013 A.I.I. championships. Seven total Grizzlies earned postseason selection to the All-A.I.I. squad. In his first year heading the Grizzlies program in 2012, Martelli led GGC to a terrific season in its inaugural campaign. The team posted a strong 10-7-1 record, while going 6-2 at home in Lawrenceville. With less than nine months to recruit and field a team, create a schedule and launch his program, Martelli certainly started the Grizzlies off on the right foot. Starting with a 9-1 victory Opening Day on Aug. 25, 2012, in GGC’s first-ever intercollegiate athletics contest in any sport, the team never looked back during the year. Martelli’s squad defeated three NCAA Division II squads in its first season, taking down Young Harris in Lawrenceville and besting Clayton State University and Georgia Southwestern on the road, all one-goal margins. The Grizzlies also posted seven shutouts on the season and outscored their opponents overall, 45-22. Martelli also orchestrated the transition of many players from previous two- and four-year schools, as well as many true freshmen experiencing collegiate athletics for the first time. Five different Grizzlies posted double-digit points on the season, led by junior Amanda Dale’s 25. Eleven separate players tallied goals during the season, including four freshmen. In goal, freshman Magaly Gutierrez started and played every minute of each contest, leading a Grizzly defense that surrendered only 1.22 goals per game. The Grizzlies performed particularly well at home, boasting a five-game win streak and outscoring their opponents by a 27-8 margin in Lawrenceville. GGC opened its beautiful synthetic-turf field on campus Sep. 29 with a 7-1 victory over Bob Jones.

Martelli joined GGC with 18 years of Division I coaching experience. He had spent the last 12 seasons at Georgia State, where he is the winningest coach in the school’s history with a record of 109-106-26. Martelli guided the GSU women’s soccer program from the early stages of its existence into one of the top teams to watch in the exceptionally competitive Colonial Athletic Association. Martelli took GSU’s 2010 team picked one spot from the bottom up seven places to one of the coveted final four positions to compete for the CAA Championship title. Although the Panthers did not come away with the CAA title, they compiled one of the most notable and rewarding seasons in the program’s 17 year existence. They earned an NSCAA Mid Atlantic Regional ranking for 5 weeks. With one CAA Rookie of the Year, four members named to All-CAA teams, an ESPN Academic All-American and a 12-7-2 overall record, and a 6-4-1 CAA record, the best since joining the CAA, Martelli’s 2010 team certainly made a name for itself in the Panther history books. Georgia State finished with their 4th straight winning and season and an NCAA RPI final ranking of 98. GSU enjoyed its best season under Martelli in 2003 with a 16-6 overall record and 7-3 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The squad tied the school record for most wins during the regular season while posting its best winning percentage (.727) since 1997. Georgia State qualified for its eighth consecutive A-Sun Tournament berth and reached the conference semifinals before falling to Florida Atlantic. The Panthers put together a ninematch winning streak during the 2003 season and recorded nine shutouts. Georgia State was also ranked in the NSCAA South Region for 4 weeks. Martelli’s team earned a NCAA RPI ranking of 88, at the time marking the highest ranking of any Georgia State women’s team since 1994. Prior to his arrival in Atlanta, Martelli was an assistant women’s coach at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. (1993-2000). He helped lead the Black Knights to a Patriot League championship, four top-10 regional rankings, two ECAC postseason tournament berths and an 88-55-4 record. During his seven-year tenure, Martelli coached one NSCAA second team AllAmerican and seven NSCAA East Regional All-Americans. In addition to his time at West Point, he spent four years as the head coach of the Eastern New York Olympic Development Program, where he led both the under-14 and under-16 teams to the Women’s East Regional semifinals. He served from 1993-96 as

the head coach and trainer for the Newburgh Storm club team and led the squad to the finals of the under-17 Boys New York State Cup in 1995. In 1990 and 1991, Martelli joined his father, Tony, a former assistant coach on Army’s men’s soccer staff, in coaching the Hudson Valley Boys Scholastic Team in the Empire State Games. As a senior at The Ohio State University, he launched his coaching career as the head coach of the Buckeyes’ women’s soccer club program. Since moving to Georgia, Martelli has been a member of the Region 3 Olympic Development Program staff. Martelli guided the ‘85 Girls Georgia ODP team to the Region 3 ODP championship, where it qualified for the National USYSA Championships in the spring of 2003 and finished third. During the summer of 2005, Coach Martelli helped lead the women’s Georgia Amateur State Team at the Region 3 national qualifying tournament in Huntsville, Ala., to a second-place finish. He was the head coach of the very successful Atlanta Silverbacks Super Y PDP U-17 Girls team for two years. In 2007, Martelli served as assistant coach for the U19 Region 3 ODP team. Martelli’s playing career began on those very same club teams he later coached. He was a member of the Empire State Games Boys Scholastic Team in 1984 and Open Men’s squad in 1987, earning a silver medal. His on-field days culminated with a standout career at Ohio State, where he was a four-year team member from 1985 to 1988. An experienced clinician, Martelli was an assistant director at the West Point soccer camps and an instructor at numerous camps across the nation. He holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advance National Diploma, USSF “C” license and is currently a candidate for a NSCAA Premiere license. In 2008, Martelli was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America National top 25 ranking committee. Martelli has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The Ohio State University, where he played collegiate soccer, and a master’s degree in elementary education from Mount St. Mary’s College. Domenic and his wife, Kirsten, are the proud parents of their daughter Brielle, and son, Nicolas.

NONEN

Assistant Coach Second Season Nebraska ‘00 Former collegiate All-American Sharolta Nonen, a star member of the 1999 and 2003 Canadian World Cup teams, was named assistant women’s soccer coach at Georgia Gwinnett College in July of 2013. Nonen is one of the most decorated former players in the game, twice being named to World Cup All-Tournament teams as a top defender and having played professionally in Europe. She helped the Grizzlies to a 14-4-1 overall record in her first season with the team in 2013. GGC went on to record the program’s first-ever ranking in the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll and earn seven all-conference selections, including the Association of Independent Institutions Player of the Year. A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, she excelled on the collegiate stage in becoming the University of Nebraska’s firstever three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American (1996-99). Her list of collegiate honors includes a first-team All-America selection as a senior, three first-team all-region selections, a Big 12 Conference Player of the Year award and three first-team all-conference selections as she helped the Huskers to 80 wins over four years. From her position on defense, she tallied 35 assists in a school-record 93 games, capping her collegiate career by being named one of 25 Women of Distinction by the Nebraska Athletic Department in 2000. Nonen also had the distinction of being the first African American player in the history of Nebraska’s women’s soccer program. While in college, she earned a place on the Canadian National Team for the 1999 World Cup, making her first international appearance just weeks before the tournament began. She went on to start all

three matches and earned all-tournament team honors. Following her collegiate career, she was drafted by the Atlanta Beat of the Women’s United Soccer Association prior to their inaugural season in 2001. She earned two All-Star distinctions and was the Defender of the Year for the WUSA in 2003. After her time with the Beat, Nonen traveled to Denmark to play professionally and was once again recognized as a league All-Star. She continued to play for the Canadian National Team, making 63 career international appearances and earning a spot once again on the 2003 World Cup team. There, she helped Canada to its best-ever result, a fourth-place finish that featured a win over world power China. Nonen again was named to the alltournament team and a Top-4 defender in the event. She returned to Atlanta during the 2007-08 season, becoming the first player/coach for the Atlanta Silverbacks semi-professional women’s team as the squad reached the national finals. After 10 years playing at the professional and international levels, Nonen retired and turned her sights to coaching. Known locally as “Shay,” Nonen has five years of coaching experience in the Atlanta area. She has worked with various local programs, mentoring young players from the Olympic Development Program and Region Premier League squads. She also volunteered previously with the GGC program for coach Martelli. Nonen holds a United States Soccer Federation Class C coaching license. Nonen earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Nebraska in 2000. Fluent in French and resides in the Atlanta area.

GGC Women’s Soccer has made its living by loading its team with local talent, and this season’s team is no different as 24 of 28 players hail from the state of Georgia. Of the four from outside the state’s borders, three boast of strong Georgia ties as two transferred from Middle Georgia College and another is the sister of a GGC men’s tennis player. Ten of the 24 native Georgians call Gwinnett County their home.

ALL-AMERICA Jocelyn Baker became the firstever women’s All-American in any sport for Georgia Gwinnett in 2013. The midfielder out of Winder, Ga., native collected six goals and six assists to earn the Association of Independent Institution’s player of the year award. She also proved instrumental in a Grizzly offense and defense that outscored opponents 48-15.
