All classses are taught by high-quality faculty who are here only because they love to teach. Since our classes are small, they give personal attention other institutions can’t deliver. If you need help with an assignment or a course, they spend extra time with you, perhaps even over lunch. Our professors don’t have office hours. They are available to you in person or by e-mail, phone and text for questions. And they don’t just teach – they mentor. You will be assigned a specific faculty mentor, but all faculty fill this role. Whether you need advice about life, careers, internships or competing for a special academic program, they are there to inspire and encourage you. They’ll even recommend you for conferences, research projects and other activities that will help prepare you for your future. They will welcome you into the college community during your “March Through the Arch” ceremony, and they will personally congratulate you when you graduate. Think of them as your own personal coaching staff.

GRIZZLY ATHLETICS Pursuing

EXCELLENCE

Georgia Gwinnett College founded its athletic office with the hiring of Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson on July 28, 2011, and over that time, the Grizzlies have become a dominant force in the NAIA. The first athletic events took place on August 25, 2012, with a soccer doubleheader against Tennessee Temple, which saw the men and women combine to beat the Crusaders 21-1. The impressive athletic achievements have continued as the men went on to win the Association of Independent Institutions Championship in their first year of eligibility in 2013, baseball advanced to the NAIA World Series and both men’s and women’s tennis claimed national championships. The 2013-14 academic year also saw 18 individuals earn All-America honors and each program finished the season either ranked or receiving votes in their respective NAIA national poll. The softball team earned the NAIA’s prestigious Champions of Character team award.

Dr. Darin S.

WILSON

Director of Athletics National Athletics Director of the Year Dr. Darin S. Wilson established the Office of Athletics at Georgia Gwinnett College in late 2011 with the vision of being one of the nation’s premier programs. Off to an incredibly quick start, the Grizzlies are in the process of becoming just that. The Grizzlies seek to develop lifelong leaders of character through academic and athletic excellence, inspired by Wilson’s devotion to the student-athlete experience. He has instilled the program’s five core values of Service, Responsibility, Leadership, Sportsmanship and the Pursuit of Excellence. Committed to the idea of continuing professional development, Wilson holds a number of influential positions within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and helps shape policy at the organization’s highest levels. He currently serves on the NAIA’s National Administrative Council, as well as on the NAIA’s Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. Additionally, he is on the Executive Committee of the Association of Independent Institutions (AII), of which GGC is a member. Wilson’s drive to provide an unparalleled student-athlete experience committed to character-driven intercollegiate athletics has resulted in tremendous early success for the Grizzlies, who currently field teams in baseball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis and women’s tennis. During the program’s very first season of postseason eligibility in 2013-14, four of the Grizzlies’ six teams competed in the NAIA national tournament, each reaching a national top-10 ranking. Eighteen players secured All-American status over the course of the year and the men’s and women’s tennis

16

teams delivered GGC’s first-ever national titles on May 17, 2014, in Mobile, Ala. Through two-plus seasons on the field, the Grizzlies have far exceeded expectations with a 271-109-8 (.699) overall record across all sports through fall 2014, earning a pair of conference championships in men’s soccer, plus one each in men’s tennis and baseball. The Grizzlies also have successfully bid for and hosted postseason championships in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball and baseball, with men’s and women’s tennis joining that list in spring 2015. Student-athletes at Georgia Gwinnett College compete at the state-of-the-art Grizzly Athletics Complex, a $15 million facility which features baseball, softball, soccer and tennis complexes, plus a 25,000-square-foot Athletics building with staff offices, team locker rooms, a weight room, training areas, hospitality suites and academic resource space. Wilson was instrumental in the concept, development and construction phases of the entire project, delivering the Grizzlies one of the nation’s elite athletic complexes. Wilson chairs GGC’s intercollegiate athletics committee, and with Wilson’s leadership, Georgia Gwinnett College successfully completed application into the NAIA in April of 2012. August 25, 2012 marked the historic Opening Day for Grizzly Athletics, with a pair of men’s and women’s soccer victories highlighting the occasion. Wilson looks forward to the athletic program’s continued growth and progress at a rapid rate.

2015 GRIZZLY BASEBALL GEORGIA GWINNETT COLLEGE • #GRIZZLYBASEBALL

Wilson brought a wealth of experience to his position as GGC’s first Director of Athletics, coming from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. He had served as the athletics director since 2003, following a five-year stint as baseball coach. His departure ended 18 years of involvement with Union, from an undergraduate student-athlete to leading the athletics program. During Wilson’s time at Union, the college won 47 Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, four Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference titles, and six NAIA Region XII championships. Union was awarded the AAC Duard Walker AllSports Trophy for the first time in school history in 2010. Forty-seven players were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and four players were selected as CoSIDA Academic All-America Team members. Wilson oversaw extensive renovation of Union’s sports facilities, including baseball and football locker room remodels, new scoreboards and press boxes, the installation of a $1 million synthetic turf multi-purpose field, and the expansion of athletic training facilities. The athletics overhaul made Union’s facilities some of the best in the NAIA. Wilson also grew Union’s department of athletics from 15 intercollegiate programs to 23, while effectively revitalizing the

athletic booster club and managing a multi-million dollar operational and scholarship budget. For his accomplishments, Wilson was selected as the 2010-2011 NAIA National Athletics Director of the Year in the spring of 2012. He was recognized as the AAC Athletic Director of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011, the NAIA Region XII Athletic Director of the Year in 2008, and the 2009-10 NAIA Under Armour AD of the Year for the Southeast Region by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Wilson’s time as a coach and player at Union were marked by success as well. He posted a 161-106-1 baseball coaching record and was named the 2001 Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year, setting a school record with 41 wins. As an undergraduate, Wilson was selected as Male Athlete of the Year while playing for Union. Wilson has a master’s in education from Union College and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He resides in Gwinnett County has two children, Drew and Mara.

Brad

STROMDAHL

#37

Head Coach Third Season Southwest Minn. St. ‘02

Brad Stromdahl has wasted little time since being named the first-ever head coach for the Georgia Gwinnett baseball program, and after just two seasons, he’s built the Grizzlies into a national contender. Last season, the first year of postseason eligibility for GGC, Stromdahl racked up 53 victories en route to a berth into the Avista-NAIA World Series. The Grizzlies, which started off the postseason by winning the A.I.I. conference tournament, ended the year with a No. 7 national ranking, and Stromdahl was named Coach of the Year by the A.I.I, ABCA NAIA East Region and Georgia Dugout Club. Eight players on the team were named to an all-conference team, with Tyler Carpenter becoming the first baseball player in school history to earn national honors after being named AllAmerica Honorable Mention. Carpenter was also one of three to get selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft, getting picked in the 25th round by the Anaheim Angels. He was joined by 23rdround picks John Fidanza and Zeke McGranahan, who were chosen by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Baltimore Orioles, respectively. Another player, Phillip Bates signed a contract with the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League. The Grizzlies led the nation in a host of team categories throughout the 2014 season, finishing first in triples (35) and second in 11 categories, including runs scored (589), runs batted in (516), total hits (723) and stolen bases (201). The Green and Gray also put together a 20-game winning streak during and became the first NAIA team to reach 40 victories in posting a 44-9 regular season record. The season also featured a 2-0 record against eventual Avista-NAIA World Series champion Cumberland, and saw GGC peak at No. 4 in the national poll. In 2013, the first season in school history, Stromdahl helped the Grizzlies to a 30win campaign, highlighted by a .314 team batting average and an offense that outscored its opponents by nearly 100 runs. GGC also picked up two wins over ranked opponents, including a 6-1 decision over eventual NAIA national champion Tennessee Wesleyan. The season also featured the opening of the Grizzly Baseball Complex, which offers one of the finest settings for baseball in the state.

22

2015 GRIZZLY BASEBALL GEORGIA GWINNETT COLLEGE • #GRIZZLYBASEBALL

Prior to GGC, Stromdahl served as the recruiting coordinator for Georgia State, helping the program achieve extraordinary success. For five seasons, the Panther offense batted over the .300 mark, averaging a .319 clip, and Panther players set eight new offensive single season records and 11 new career offensive records. He was also instrumental in reaping top Division I recruiting classes nationwide, finishing in the top fifty the past three seasons.

Moreover, Stromdahl’s support of academic excellence led to another victory as the players maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.01.

In 2011, the Panther offense ranked among the best in the nation at reaching base safely, finishing second in the CAA with a .401 on-base percentage. The team secured a leaguehigh 294 walks to place ninth in the NCAA, while four offensive players went on to be named All-Conference selections at season’s end.

During Stromdahl’s time at CMU, the offense led the MidAmerican Conference in over half of the offensive categories each season. CMU made three MAC Tournament appearances and won the MAC regular-season title in 2004. In 2005, the Chippewas finished with a 42-18 overall record and fell in the championship game of the conference tournament.

In 2010, Stromdahl oversaw the greatest offensive season in the history of the program as the Panthers led the nation in batting average for most of the season. The Panthers led the NCAA in runs scored per game and sacrifice flies, and they finished third in national batting average, marking a team average of .351. With Stromdahl’s guidance, the offense broke nearly every team single-season record.

Additionally, Stromdahl’s experience includes time at Southwest Minnesota State (1999-2002), coaching with legendary coach Paul Blanchard, and Marshall University (2003), as well as coaching for the Coastal Plain League (2004) and Northwoods League (2006).

After graduating 12 seniors from 2009, Stromdahl helped lead the 2010 squad to 34 wins, the second most in school history, while watching a record six players earn All-CAA honors. The team broke GSU’s records for batting average, slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, total bases, RBIs, base on balls, conference wins, conference winning percentage and home winning percentage. The 2009 season saw Stromdahl help lead the Panthers to their most successful season in school history. The team won a record 39 games, earned its first-ever CAA Championship and advanced to the NCAA Regionals. Additionally, the Panthers set school records, for the second straight year, for runs, hits and RBIs.

Prior to GSU, Stromdahl spent three seasons at Central Michigan University. With the Chippewas, Stromdahl’s primary responsibilities were hitting instruction, working with infielders and assisting with recruiting.

Stromdahl spent two seasons playing for the Division II Mustangs before pursuing a career in professional baseball for two seasons. He received a master’s degree in sports administration from Central Michigan in 2006 and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Southwest Minnesota State in 2002. In addition, Stromdahl played two seasons at Bethany Lutheran College for storied coach Art Westphal. Stromdahl, who grew up in Napa, California, finished high school in Minocqua, Wisconsin. He married Tessa Rieger in December 2006. The couple has two sons, Leo William, who was born in August 2011, and Hugo Walter, who was born in September 2014. The Stromdahl family resides in Atlanta.

Ward is currently the director of Georgia Select Sports, a travel squad that features youth and showcase teams. He also currently manages the multipurpose training facility Georgia Sports Center in Loganville, Ga.
