Gwinnett County is the second-most populous county in the state of Georgia, and boasts of a population over 800,000 people and includes the cities of Auburn, Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Snellville, Sugar Hill and Suwanee.

Lawrenceville, which is home to Georgia Gwinnett College is the county seat.

The county contains some of the best entertainment options in the Atlanta metro area, including Aurora Theatre, which boasts of some of the top stage shows, and Gwinnett Arena, which has drawn in such acts as Justin Timberlake and Beyonce.

For the sports fans, in addition to being close to major sports teams in Atlanta, Lawrenceville also has minor league teams in the Gwinnett Braves and Gwinnett Gladiators. For shoppers, Buford’s Mall of Georgia is the largest in the state of Georgia, and Lawrenceville’s Sugarloaf Mills offers unique dining and entertainment options like Atlanta’s largest Dave & Buster’s and Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament.

Lawrenceville is a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, which ranks as the ninth largest in the United States. In addition to being one of the most accessible cities to visit in the U.S., Atlanta also serves as the cultural and entertainment hub of the Southeast. The city was the host of the 1996 Olympics and boasts of major professional sports teams in the Braves, Falcons and Hawks. Other attractions include the world’s largest aquarium and a number of museums that highlight the historical significance of the city during both the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. The city also offers some of the best music, dining and shopping attractions in the country.

Georgia Gwinnett College founded its athletic office with the hiring of Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson on July 28, 2011, and over that time, the Grizzlies have become a dominant force in the NAIA. The first athletic events took place on August 25, 2012, with a soccer doubleheader against Tennessee Temple, which saw the men and women combine to beat the Crusaders 21-1. The impressive athletic achievements have continued as the men went on to win the Association of Independent Institutions Championship in their first year of eligibility in 2013, baseball advanced to the NAIA World Series and both men’s and women’s tennis claimed national championships. The 2013-14 academic year also saw 18 individuals earn All-America honors and each program finished the season either ranked or receiving votes in their respective NAIA national poll. The softball team earned the NAIA’s prestigious Champions of Character team award.

WILSON

Director of Athletics National Athletics Director of the Year Dr. Darin S. Wilson established the Office of Athletics at Georgia Gwinnett College in late 2011 with the vision of being one of the nation’s premier programs. Off to an incredibly quick start, the Grizzlies are in the process of becoming just that.

The Grizzlies seek to develop lifelong leaders of character through academic and athletic excellence, inspired by Wilson’s devotion to the student-athlete experience. He has instilled the program’s five core values of Service, Responsibility, Leadership, Sportsmanship and the Pursuit of Excellence.

Committed to the idea of continuing professional development, Wilson holds a number of influential positions within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and helps shape policy at the organization’s highest levels.

He currently serves on the NAIA’s National Administrative Council, as well as on the NAIA’s Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. Additionally, he is on the Executive Committee of the Association of Independent Institutions (AII), of which GGC is a member.

Wilson’s drive to provide an unparalleled student-athlete experience committed to character-driven intercollegiate athletics has resulted in tremendous early success for the Grizzlies, who currently field teams in baseball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis and women’s tennis.

During the program’s very first season of postseason eligibility in 2013-14, four of the Grizzlies’ six teams competed in the NAIA national tournament, each reaching a national top-10 ranking. Eighteen players secured All-American status over the course of the year and the men’s and women’s tennis

teams delivered GGC’s first-ever national titles on May 17, 2014, in Mobile, Ala. Through two-plus seasons on the field, the Grizzlies have far exceeded expectations with a 271-109-8 (.699) overall record across all sports through fall 2014, earning a pair of conference championships in men’s soccer, plus one each in men’s tennis and baseball.

The Grizzlies also have successfully bid for and hosted postseason championships in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball and baseball, with men’s and women’s tennis joining that list in spring 2015.

Student-athletes at Georgia Gwinnett College compete at the state-of-the-art Grizzly Athletics Complex, a $15 million facility which features baseball, softball, soccer and tennis complexes, plus a 25,000-square-foot Athletics building with staff offices, team locker rooms, a weight room, training areas, hospitality suites and academic resource space.

Wilson was instrumental in the concept, development and construction phases of the entire project, delivering the Grizzlies one of the nation’s elite athletic complexes.

Wilson chairs GGC’s intercollegiate athletics committee, and with Wilson’s leadership, Georgia Gwinnett College successfully completed application into the NAIA in April of 2012.

August 25, 2012 marked the historic Opening Day for Grizzly Athletics, with a pair of men’s and women’s soccer victories highlighting the occasion.

Wilson looks forward to the athletic program’s continued growth and progress at a rapid rate.

Wilson brought a wealth of experience to his position as GGC’s first Director of Athletics, coming from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. He had served as the athletics director since 2003, following a five-year stint as baseball coach. His departure ended 18 years of involvement with Union, from an undergraduate student-athlete to leading the athletics program.

During Wilson’s time at Union, the college won 47 Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, four Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference titles, and six NAIA Region XII championships. Union was awarded the AAC Duard Walker AllSports Trophy for the first time in school history in 2010. Forty-seven players were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and four players were selected as CoSIDA Academic All-America Team members.

Wilson oversaw extensive renovation of Union’s sports facilities, including baseball and football locker room remodels, new scoreboards and press boxes, the installation of a $1 million synthetic turf multi-purpose field, and the expansion of athletic training facilities. The athletics overhaul made Union’s facilities some of the best in the NAIA. Wilson also grew Union’s department of athletics from 15 intercollegiate programs to 23, while effectively revitalizing the

athletic booster club and managing a multi-million dollar operational and scholarship budget.

For his accomplishments, Wilson was selected as the 2010-2011 NAIA National Athletics Director of the Year in the spring of 2012.

He was recognized as the AAC Athletic Director of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011, the NAIA Region XII Athletic Director of the Year in 2008, and the 2009-10 NAIA Under Armour AD of the Year for the Southeast Region by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

Wilson’s time as a coach and player at Union were marked by success as well. He posted a 161-106-1 baseball coaching record and was named the 2001 Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year, setting a school record with 41 wins. As an undergraduate, Wilson was selected as Male Athlete of the Year while playing for Union.

Wilson has a master’s in education from Union College and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He resides in Gwinnett County has two children, Drew and Mara.

FACILITIES

The Grizzly Athletics Complex, complete with facilities for baseball, softball and soccer as well as a 25,000-square-foot administration building was completed in 2013. The complex, which is located adjacent to the main entrance to campus, was built in a step-like manner to take advantage of the natural topography and welcome the GGC community and visitors to campus.

Grizzly Soccer Complex was the first to open and features a synthetic playing surface, a Daktronics scoreboard and ample bleacher and hillside seating.

In the spring of 2013, both the baseball and softball teams opened their stadiums, which features climate-controlled press boxes, natural grass fields and full dugouts complete with restrooms. The baseball stadium seats 800, and the softball stadium can accommodate up to 600.

The main athletics building hosts the bulk of the GGC coaching staffs and athletics administration. It boasts of locker rooms, conference rooms, a weight room, a sports medicine facility and a dedicated academic support center.

Head Coach Third Season Barry ‘04 After presiding over a 21-win improvement in 2014, Kat Ihlenburg will be looking to continue building the Georgia Gwinnett softball team into a nationally prominent program as it begins its third season in 2015.

In just her second season in charge, Ihlenburg guided the Grizzlies to a 39-win campaign in 2014 as the team finished the year receiving votes in the final NAIA Top 25 poll with a squad that featured a First Team All-American and conference player of the year as well as four other all-conference selections.

It was about more than just the on-field success for Ihlenburg, however, as her team also earned the NAIA’s Champions of Character team award, which was handed out in recognition of her team’s dedication to the initiative’s core principles of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and respect.

The Grizzlies improved in nearly every aspect from 2013’s inaugural season, especially offensively, with the team ending the year ranked in the top 20 nationally in nearly a dozen categories.

A major component of the improvement was undoubtedly junior Cassidy Littlefield, who ranked in the top 10 in the country in 15 different statistical categories en route to becoming the softball program’s first-ever All-American. She would also be named A.I.I. Co-Player of the Year.

Littlefield joined Ashley Beyke, Kayla Byrom and Halley Ingram as the first-ever all-conference players in school history.

As the first softball coach in school history, Ihlenburg has been a part of a number of firsts, and 2014 brought plenty of those as the Grizzlies hosted the A.I.I. Championship tournament, which brought in high-caliber competition from around the country. The event marked the first postseason appearance in school history for the program and it featured the first-ever postseason win as well, a 5-2 victory over Lindenwood-Belleville.

As a player, Ihlenburg caught and played outfield for Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. She helped take the Buccaneers to the 2002 NCAA Division II World Series and achieve a record-breaking number of single season wins. She is also a 2004 graduate of the school, earning a bachelor’s degree in public relations.

Ihlenburg’s collegiate coaching career began when she served as an assistant for Reinhardt in 2005, and she also spent three seasons coaching In 2013, Ihlenburg put together the first team abroad in Belgium, Italy and Prague with USA in school history and picked up 18 wins on the Athletes International. She’s also assisted with season, including an upset of No. 9 Reinhardt, directing and instructing at camps, including which was one of 12 games against the NAIA Top those for the College of Charleston, University of 25 as a part of a challenging first-year schedule.

Alabama and North Carolina State University.

The season also featured the opening of Grizzly Softball Complex late in the season.

Ihlenburg and her husband, Mark, reside in Sugar Hill and have one child, Elizabeth.

A native of Nashville, Ihlenburg brought eight years of collegiate coaching experience with her to Lawrenceville, including seven seasons as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston of the NCAA’s Division I. During her time there, CAREER RECORD she helped develop 26 all-conference athletes, Year School Record Pct. two conference players of the year and a pitcher 2013 Georgia Gwinnett 18-26 .409 of the year. She also coached three players that 2014 Georgia Gwinnett 39-10-1 .780 were named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA AllTOTAL 57-36-1 .606 Region team.

Assistant Coach First Season College of Charleston ‘11 After putting together an outstanding career for the College of Charleston, Alexa Datko will now look to guide the Georgia Gwinnett softball pitching staff to greater heights as she was named assistant softball coach by Head Coach Kat Ihlenburg on September 25.

“Alexa was someone that I was familiar with from having coached her at College of Charleston,” Ihlenburg explained. “She was a highlevel college pitcher and she brings a solid background with her as well.

She’s from a good softball area in San Diego and all three of her sisters also played softball in Division I, so she’s going to have a lot of contacts that will help elevate our program. I think she’s also going to be a help the students in the classroom.”

“I’m really excited about working with Coach Ihlenburg again,” Datko said. “This is a great opportunity to make my transition from high school coaching into college, and it’s nice to be a part of a program that’s already competitive and is still growing. I also like the family environment with athletics here. Everyone is working together.”

Datko joins GGC after spending the last three years working for Scripps Ranch High School in her native San Diego. After joining the staff initially as an assistant, she spent the last two years as the head coach, compiling a 33-29-1 record. In her time with the school, she guided the Falcons to a league title and as far as the semifinals of the CIF playoffs.

Datko, who graduated from CofC in 2011, experienced unmatched success for the Cougars, culminating with the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year award as a senior. She ended her final season with a 1.95 earned run average, striking out 134 and racking up seven complete game shutouts.

“Alexa played a great Division I schedule and had an excellent senior year that really kind of set the standard for what that program became after she left,” Ihlenburg said. “I know that with that kind of experience and mental toughness, she’s going to be able to help our athletes. She was a true example of an athlete that developed herself into a dominant pitcher over her time in college, and I think that will translate well when she’s mentoring our pitching staff.”

Assistant Coach Second Season Connecticut ‘73 Long around the game of baseball as a player and coach, John Ihlenburg joined the Grizzly softball staff prior to the 2014 season.

He assists with day-to-day operations and instruction.

Born in New York, Ihlenburg lived in Portland, Oregon before attending high school in Canton, Massachusetts. He started his collegiate career playing football at Wake Forest University before transferring to the University of Connecticut to play baseball.

He is a graduate of UConn where he was an NCAA All-America selection, as well as a two time Academic All-America. A team captain, Ihlenburg was awarded the Eastern Athletic Conference Medallion for Athletic and Academic Prowess and was an All Region, All Conference selection.

He spent three years in the Cape Cod Baseball League and played for the Kansas City Royals organization after graduation.

Ihlenburg went on to coach at Fairfield University and Oglethorpe University before joining the staff at Reinhardt University in 2004. He served as head coach for the Eagles until 2013.

Outside of baseball, Ihlenburg flew the A-7E and A-4 and served as a Commander in the US Navy before retiring after 22 years of service.

He also flew as a Captain for Delta Airlines on the B-727, B-737, B-757 and B-767 aircraft.

Ihlenburg is the father-in-law of GGC head coach Kat Ihlenburg, who is married to John’s son Mark, also a former baseball player at UConn.

John and his wife Kathy have another son, Greg, a record-holder at Reinhardt, and currently reside in Canton, Ga.

Assistant Coach First Season Georgia Gwinnett ‘14 After playing in each of the first two softball seasons in Georgia Gwinnett history, Heaven Hinton returned to the school in 2015 as an assistant coach.

Hinton finished her GGC career in 2014 as one of the school’s best players, posting a .358 batting average with a team-leading 53 runs batted in and five home runs as a senior en route to helping the offense rank as one of the most prolific in the country.

She also played a major role in a 21-game improvement for the team as it earned its first postseason victory in school history and finished the season receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll.

Prior to joining the Grizzlies, she was vital in the launch of another softball program, helping East Georgia State get off the ground. The Tampa, Fla., native started every game over the course of the first two seasons in school history and hit .345 as a sophomore before transferring to GGC. Hinton has also served in a variety of other coaching roles over the past three years, working at camps across the region as well as offering one-on-one hitting instruction.

Hinton was one of the first-ever graduates for the Grizzly softball program and earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in December 2014.
