The Future of
EDUCATION
All classes at Georgia Gwinnett are taught by high-quality faculty who are here only because they love to teach. Since our classes are small, they give personal attention that other institutions can’t deliver. If you need help with an assignment or a course, they spend extra time with you, perhaps even over lunch. Our professors don’t have office hours. They are available to you in person or by e-mail, phone, and text for questions. And they don’t just teach, they mentor. You will be assigned a specific faculty mentor, but all faculty fill this role. Whether you need advice about life, careers, internships, or competing for a special academic program, they are there to inspire and encourage you. They’ll even recommend you for conferences, research projects and other activities that will help prepare you for your future. They will welcome you into the college community during your “March Through the Arch” ceremony, and they will personally congratulate you when you graduate. Think of them as your own personal coaching staff.

EXCELLENCE

Georgia Gwinnett College founded the Office of Athletics with the hiring of Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson on July 28, 2011, and over that time, the Grizzlies have become a truly dominant force within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The first athletic events took place on August 25, 2012, with a soccer doubleheader against Tennessee Temple, which saw the men and women combine to beat the Crusaders 21-1. The impressive athletic achievements have continued ever since, highlighted by back-to-back-to-back NAIA national championships by the men’s tennis team. The women’s tennis team has also collected two national championships in three seasons of post-season eligibility, while men’s soccer, baseball, and softball have each taken home A.I.I. titles over the past four seasons. All six Grizzly programs have competed in national championship play.

Dr. Darin S.
WILSON
Inaugural Director of Athletics Past National Athletics Director of the Year Dr. Darin S. Wilson established the Office of Athletics at Georgia Gwinnett College in late 2011 with the vision of being one of the nation’s premier programs. Off to an incredibly quick start, the Grizzlies are in the process of becoming just that. The Grizzlies seek to develop lifelong leaders of character through academic and athletic excellence, inspired by Wilson’s devotion to the student-athlete experience. He has instilled the program’s five core values: Service, Responsibility, Leadership, Sportsmanship and the Pursuit of Excellence. Committed to the idea of continuing professional development, Wilson holds a number of influential positions within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and helps shape policy at the organization’s highest levels. He currently serves on the NAIA’s National Administrative Council and Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. Additionally, he is on the executive committee of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), of which GGC is a member. In 2015-16, Wilson was named the conference’s Athletics Director of the Year. Wilson’s drive to provide an unparalleled student-athlete experience committed to character-driven intercollegiate athletics has resulted in tremendous early success for the Grizzlies. The college fields teams in baseball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis and women’s tennis. Through five-plus seasons on the field, the Grizzlies have far exceeded expectations with a 739-239-22 (.750) overall record across all sports through fall 2017. They have earned seven national titles (4-men’s tennis, 3-women’s tennis), been nationally ranked in every sport and won 11 conference titles. Wilson was instrumental in providing GGC student-athletes with state-of-the-art facilities, featuring the Grizzly Athletic Complex, a $15-million facility with baseball, softball,

These facilities have contributed to the Grizzlies hosting postseason championships in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, softball and baseball.
For his accomplishments at GGC and Union, Wilson was selected as the NAIA National Athletics Director of the Year for 2010-11 and 2015-16, and twice was named NAIA Under Armour AD of the Year for the Southeast Region. The Grizzlies have posted three 50-plus-win seasons and reached the postseason in all five seasons of eligibility. Stromdahl was named the Association of Independent Institutions’ Coach of the Year following the 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014 seasons. He also has been named Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association NAIA East Region and Georgia Dugout Club. The program has also produced an NAIA Player of the Year, Ty Abbott (2015), and six players have caught the eye of professional-level scouts and have been drafted by Major League Baseball organizations (Josh Merrigan and Will Solomon, 2016; Christian Turnipseed, 2015; Tyler Carpenter, John Fiornza and Zeke McGranhan, 2014). Stromdahl also is concerned with player development off the playing field. His teams have always maintained strong grade point averages, with several players being named to the Director of Athletics’ Honor Roll, and been active in community relations projects. On the diamond, Stromdahl led Georgia Gwinnett College to a programbest 57-6 record in 2016, winning the season’s first 25 games. That built upon a 2015 (50-14) campaign in which the team led NAIA in stolen bases (209) and pitching strikeouts (545). The team was second in the nation with 549 runs scored, 735 total hits and 495 runs batted in, and was among the top 10 in triples (34), average of runs scored per game (8.58) and team batting average (.339).

A native of Zachary, La., catcher John Fidanza made history on June 7, 2014, by becoming the first Grizzly player to be selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Fidanza played 51 games for the Grizzlies in 2014, his lone season with the Green and Gray. The stellar defensive catcher with a laser-like arm threw out 17 of the 33 runners who tried to steal against him during the 2014 season. At the plate, the switch hitter drove in 29 runs with seven doubles and was named to the Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series AllTournament Team. An injury prevented him from signing with the Diamondbacks, but he played 41 professional games in 2015 with the Frontier League’s Washington Wild Things.
A native of Durham, N.C., reliever Zeke McGranahan was taken with the very next pick after Fidanza in the 2014 draft, becoming GGC’s second-ever selection. A force out of the bullpen, the all-conference closer had seven saves in his one season with the Grizzlies. McGranahan made a team-high 30 appearances during the 2014 year, recording a 2.12 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 34.0 innings. He held opposing batters to a .189 average at the plate. 2016 | Texas Rangers | 10th Round (Pick 309)
2016 | San Diego Padres | 38th Round (Pick 1,134)
For the second consecutive year, the Orioles organization selected a Georgia Gwinnett closer as Powder Springs, Ga., native Christian Turnipseed was taken by Baltimore in 2015 after one stellar season in the GGC bullpen. The right-hander set new single-season marks for the Grizzlies with 10 saves and a 1.50 ERA, holding opposing batters to a .100 average while going 5-0. Turnipseed struck out 60 batters in 36.0 innings of work, earning first team all-conference accolades and ranking among the nation’s leaders. He pitched for the Gulf Coast League Orioles (Rk.) and Aberdeen Ironbirds (A-) in his first professional season and did not allow a run in over 28 innings.
With the 309th pick of the 2016 MLB Draft, the Texas Rangers fulfilled a lifelong dream for Josh Merrigan. Merrigan’s selection in the 10th round is the highest draft pick in Georgia Gwinnett baseball history. The All-American was second in batting for the Grizzlies, boasting a .423 batting average and was a key contributor to GGC’s program-best 57 wins in 2016. In his 201 at-bats, Merrigan drove in 59 runs on a GGC-best 85 hits and scored on 66 occasions. In 19 games for the Spokane Indians, Texas’ A-ball affiliate in the Northwest League, Merrigan collected 17 hits in 72 at bats. The outfielder has driven in six runs, stole two bases, scored on 10 occasions, and reached on six walks.
Will Solomon started the 2016 season as a starter and by season’s end was the closer for the Grizzlies. While on the mound, Solomon accumulated an 8-1 record while collecting four saves. The left-handed Columbus, Ga., native posted a 2.41 earned run average and struck out 79 batters in 59 and two-thirds innings of work. Opponents batted a mere .201 against Solomon as he only allowed 44 hits in 219 at bats. As a member of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in North Dakota, member of the North Division of the American Association Independent League, Solomon has made 10 starts, collecting a 6-3 record. The left-hander struck out 39 batters in 71.2 innings of work.
