Your own private and spacious bedroom awaits you in a two-, three-, four-, six-, eightor 12-bedroom suite, with a bathroom for every two students in the suite. Gwinnett County is the second-most populous county in the state of Georgia and boasts a population in excess of 800,000 people and includes the cities of Auburn, Berkeley Lake, Braselton, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Rest Haven, Snellville, Sugar Hill and Suwanee. Lawrenceville, which is home to Georgia Gwinnett College, is the county seat.

The 9000,000 county contains some of the best entertainment options in the Atlanta metro area, including the Aurora Theatre, which boasts of some of the top stage shows, and the Infinite Energy Arena, which has drawn in such acts as Justin Timberlake and Beyonce. For the sports fans, in addition to being close to major sports teams in Atlanta, Lawrenceville also has minor league teams in the Gwinnett Striperes and Atlanta Gladiators and is the home base for the Harlem Globetrotters. Lawrenceville is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, which ranks as the ninth-largest in the United States.

In addition to being one of the most accessible cities to visit in the country, it also serves as the cultural and entertainment hub of the Southeast. The city was the host of the 1996 Summer Olympics and boasts of major professional sports teams in the Braves, Falcons and Hawks, and a Major League Soccer franchise, Atlanta United FC. Other attractions include the world’s largest aquarium and a number of museums that highlight the historical significance of the city during both the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. The city also offers some of the best music, dining, and shopping attractions in the country.

Georgia Gwinnett College founded the Office of Athletics with the hiring of Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson on July 28, 2011, and over that time, the Grizzlies have become a truly dominant force within the NAIA. The first athletic events took place on August 25, 2012, with a soccer doubleheader against Tennessee Temple, which saw the men and women combine to beat the Crusaders 21-1. The impressive athletic achievements have continued ever since, highlighted by four straight NAIA national championships by the men’s tennis team. The women’s tennis team has also collected three national championships in four seasons of post-season eligibility, while men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball, and softball have each taken home A.I.I. titles over the past four seasons.

WILSON

Inaugural Director of Athletics Past National Athletics Director of the Year Dr. Darin S. Wilson established the Office of Athletics at Georgia Gwinnett College in late 2011 with the vision of being one of the nation’s premier programs. Off to an incredibly quick start, the Grizzlies are in the process of becoming just that.

The Grizzlies seek to develop lifelong leaders of character through academic and athletic excellence, inspired by Wilson’s devotion to the student-athlete experience. He has instilled the program’s five core values: Service, Responsibility, Leadership, Sportsmanship and the Pursuit of Excellence.

Committed to the idea of continuing professional development, Wilson holds a number of influential positions within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and helps shape policy at the organization’s highest levels.

He currently serves on the NAIA’s National Administrative Council and Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. Additionally, he is on the executive committee of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), of which GGC is a member. In 2015-16, Wilson was named the conference’s Athletics Director of the Year.

Wilson’s drive to provide an unparalleled student-athlete experience committed to character-driven intercollegiate athletics has resulted in tremendous early success for the Grizzlies. The college fields teams in baseball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis and women’s tennis.

Through five-plus seasons on the field, the Grizzlies have far exceeded expectations with a 739-239-22 (.750) overall record across all sports through fall 2017. They have earned seven national titles (4-men’s tennis, 3-women’s tennis), been nationally ranked in every sport and won 11 conference titles.

Wilson was instrumental in providing GGC student-athletes with state-of-the-art facilities, featuring the Grizzly Athletic Complex, a $15-million facility which features baseball,

softball, soccer and tennis complexes. There also is a 25,000-square-foot athletics building with staff offices, team locker rooms, a weight room, training areas, hospitality suites and academic resource space. These facilities have contributed to the Grizzlies hosting postseason championships in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, softball and baseball.

For his accomplishments at GGC and Union, Wilson was selected as the 2010-11 and 2015-16 NAIA National Athletics Director of the Year and twice named NAIA Under Armour AD of the Year for the Southeast Region.

Wilson’s time as a coach and player at Union were marked by success as well. He posted a 161-1061 baseball coaching record and was named the 2001 Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year after setting a school record with 41 wins. As an undergraduate, Wilson was selected as Male Athlete of the Year while playing for Union.

Wilson brought a wealth of experience to his position as GGC’s first Director of Athletics, coming from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. He had served as the athletics director since 2003, following a five-year stint as baseball coach. His departure ended 18 years of involvement with Union, from an undergraduate student-athlete to Wilson has a master’s degree in education from leading the athletics program.

Union College and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership from Capella University in Minneapolis, Under Wilson’s leadership Union won six NAIA Minnesota.

GRIZZLY ATHLETICS State-of-the-Art

FACILITIES

The Grizzly Athletics Complex, complete with facilities for baseball, softball, and soccer as well as a 25,000-square-foot administration building, was completed in 2013. The complex, which is located adjacent to the main entrance to campus, was built in a step-like manner to take advantage of the natural topography and welcome the GGC community and visitors to campus.

The Grizzly Soccer Complex was the first to open and features a synthetic playing surface, a Daktronics scoreboard, and ample bleacher and hillside seating.

In the spring of 2013, both the baseball and softball teams opened their stadiums, which feature climatecontrolled press boxes, natural grass fields and full dugouts complete with restrooms. The baseball stadium seats 800 and the softball stadium can accommodate up to 600 fans. The soccer complex features bleacher and hillside seating for more than 500.

The main athletics building hosts the bulk of the GGC coaching staff and athletics administration. It features locker rooms, conference rooms, a weight room, a sports medicine facility and a dedicated academic support center.

Head Coach Sixth Season Barry (Fla.), ‘04 The founding head coach of the Georgia Gwinnett College softball program, Kat Ihlenburg has developed the Grizzlies into a championship squad built upon toughness, character and a devotion to its community.

Since February 1, 2012, Ihlenburg has led the Grizzlies to three trips to the NAIA national tournament and two Association of Independent Institutions tournament championships. The program has also been recognized as an NAIA Champions of Character team award winner. Through five seasons, the Grizzly softball program has totaled a 188-80-2 (.700) record and is coming off back-to-back-to-back 40-plus-win seasons entering 2018.

The Grizzlies reached the 50-win plateau during the 2017 campaign and reached the NAIA national tournament for the third straight season. Ihlenburg was named the A.I.I. Coach of the Year in 2017 after sharing the award in 2016 and 2015.

In her five seasons as head coach Ihlenburg has mentored infielder Cassidy Littlefield, a two-time NAIA first-team AllAmerican and 2015 A.I.I. Player of the Year and outfielder Niki Cook, a 2017 first-team All-American by the NAIA and National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

She embraces the core values established by Georgia Gwinnett College’s athletic department and NAIA. The 2014 Grizzlies earned the Buffalo Funds NAIA Champions of Character Softball Team award from among 200 softball programs.

The Grizzlies take part in numerous community efforts, including working with Special Olympics Georgia and Relay for Life, plus volunteer at many on-campus events and hold youth clinics in the area. Building leaders of character focused on service to the community has been the hallmark of Ihlenburg’s program.

Since April 17, 2013 the GGC program has played all home games at the state-of-the-art Grizzly Softball Complex. The on-campus facility features a topnotch natural grass playing surface and bleacher seating for 500 fans. It sits just steps away from the Grizzly softball locker room and Grizzly Athletic Complex. The team uses the building for meetings, strength and conditioning and academic services.

Ihlenburg brought eight years of previous collegiate softball coaching experience to her position at Georgia Gwinnett College.

She spent seven years as an assistant at the College of Charleston (S.C.) to then-head coach Shelly Hoerner, for whom Ihlenburg played collegiately. During Ihlenburg’s time with the Cougars, 26 players were selected as all-conference members in the Southern Conference. Two athletes were named conference Player of the Year and one Pitcher of the Year, while three players were named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region team.

She also has directed and been an instructor for softball camps at Georgia Gwinnett College, Georgia Tech, the College of Charleston, the University of Alabama, North Carolina State University, Reinhardt University, Tennessee Tech and the University of Tennessee. The Grizzly Softball Complex routinely plays host to elite showcases and other prospect events with organizations such as On Deck Softball, Champions Fastpitch Academy and College Coaches Skills Camp thanks in large part to Ihlenburg’s efforts.

Ihlenburg grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and graduated from Father Ryan High School. She and her husband, Mark, have two children, Elizabeth and Reid, and reside in Gwinnett County.

Prior to her time in Charleston, Ihlenburg spent one season on the staff at Reinhardt University in Waleska, Ga. As a player, Ihlenburg caught and played outfield for Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. She helped guide the Buccaneers to the 2002 Division II College World Series and set a new school single-season wins record. She graduated from Barry in 2004 with a bachelor of arts in public relations.

Ihlenburg serves as a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and has spent multiple seasons coaching abroad- in Belgium, Italy, the Czech Republic and the

Assistant Coach Second Season Georgia College, ‘10 Tonya Medders enters her second year as the Grizzlies’ assistant softball coach.

With the Grizzlies, Medders’ responsibilities include recruiting, coaching and training, and supporting Head Coach Kat Ihlenburg in the dayto-day operation of the softball program.

Medders manages the team’s pitching staff and helped mentor 2017 Association of Independent Institutions Pitcher of the Year Taylor Hansis. The 2017 squad set school records for most wins and lowest earned run average. The Grizzlies captured the conference tournament title and made its third NAIA national tournament postseason appearance.

Medders spent three years as the assistant coach at Berry College, an NCAA Division III program located in Rome, Ga. She spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons as the head coach at Wesleyan College (Ga.).

Medders also has coaching experience as a pitching, infield and hitting instructor.

As a student-athlete, Medders played for Georgia College, earning all-conference honors as a first baseman. She twice earned all NCAA Southeast Regional All-Tournament honors. In 2008, Medders also earned PBC All-Tournament and Daktronics All-Atlantic Region second team honors.

IHLENBURG

Assistant Coach Fifth Season Connecticut, ‘73 John Ihlenburg joined the Grizzly softball staff prior to the 2013-14 season, after spending several years in the game of baseball as a player and coach.

Oglethorpe University before joining the staff at Reinhardt University in 2004. He served as head coach for the Eagles until 2013.

With the Grizzlies, Ihlenburg assists with day-to-day operations and instruction.

Born in New York, Ihlenburg lived in Portland, Oregon, before attending high school in Canton, Massachusetts. He started his collegiate career playing football at Wake Forest University before transferring to the University of Connecticut to play baseball.

Outside of baseball, Ihlenburg flew the A-7E and A-4 and served as a Commander in the US Navy before retiring after 22 years of service.

He is a graduate of UConn where he was an NCAA AllAmerica selection, as well as a two time Academic All-America.

A team captain, Ihlenburg was awarded the Eastern Athletic Conference Medallion for Athletic and Academic Prowess and was an All Region, All Conference selection.

He spent three years in the Cape Cod Baseball League and played for the Kansas City Royals organization after graduation.

Ihlenburg went on to coach at Fairfield University and

He also flew as a Captain for Delta Airlines on the B-727, B-737, B-757 and B-767 aircraft.

Ihlenburg is the father-in-law of GGC head coach Kat Ihlenburg, who is married to John’s son Mark, also a former baseball player at UConn.

John and his wife, Kathy, have another son, Greg, a record-holder at Reinhardt, and currently reside in Buford, Georgia.

One of the most lethal hitters in the country and an extremely versatile athlete, Cassidy Littlefield made an emphatic mark in her two seasons as a Grizzly, posting back-to-back NAIA First-Team All-American seasons. The Slocomb, Ala., native helped guide the Grizzlies to their first-ever postseason championship and NAIA tournament appearance, posting eye-popping numbers to headline the GGC record books.

As a junior in 2014, Littlefield was second in the nation with 1.80 hits per game, ranked third in stolen bases (47) and triples (9), fifth in total bases per game (2.74), standing inside the nation’s top 15 in 17 different individual categories. Her .474 batting average and 62 runs scored led the Grizzlies, two of a number of ranks in which she paced the team as she claimed both Association of Independent Institutions Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors in earning firstteam all conference accolades. Her First Team NAIA All-American selection at the end of the year made her GGC’s first-ever All-American in program history.

As a senior in 2015, Littlefield picked up right where she had left off the year before, vaulting to the nation’s top 15 in 14 different individual categories including first in triples (8), third in runs scored per game (1.42) and sixth in stolen bases (40). Once again, her stat line led the GGC squad as she posted a .775 slugging percentage, plated 75 runs and drilled seven homers. On May 29, 2015, she earned her second straight First Team NAIA All-American selection to solidify herself among the nation’s best players and as a beacon for the Grizzlies’ program. She also added an NFCA All-American selection- the first in program history- on June 2.

Niki Cook put together the best offensive season in the NAIA during the 2017 campaign. The Buford, Ga. native led the nation in seven offensive categories. The junior outfielder successfully recorded 71 stolen bases and posted an amazing .603 batting average. Cook set the GGC singleseason school record for batting average, runs, hits and stolen bases.

She was named a first team All-American by both the NAIA and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Cook won the Golden Shoe award and registered the most stolen bases in the country among all college divisions.
