The Future of

EDUCATION

All classes at Georgia Gwinnett are taught by high-quality faculty who are here only because they love to teach. Since our classes are small, they give personal attention that other institutions can’t deliver. If you need help with an assignment or a course, they spend extra time with you, perhaps even over lunch. Our professors don’t have office hours. They are available to you in person or by e-mail, phone, and text for questions. And they don’t just teach, they mentor. You will be assigned a specific faculty mentor, but all faculty fill this role. Whether you need advice about life, careers, internships, or competing for a special academic program, they are there to inspire and encourage you. They’ll even recommend you for conferences, research projects and other activities that will help prepare you for your future. They will welcome you into the college community during your “March Through the Arch” ceremony, and they will personally congratulate you when you graduate. Think of them as your own personal coaching staff.

Pursuing

EXCELLENCE

14

Georgia Gwinnett College founded the Office of Athletics with the hiring of Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson on July 28, 2011, and over that time, the Grizzlies have become a truly dominant force within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The first athletic events took place on August 25, 2012, with a soccer doubleheader against Tennessee Temple, which saw the men and women combine to beat the Crusaders 21-1. The impressive athletic achievements have continued ever since, highlighted by five consecutive NAIA national championships by the men’s tennis team. The women’s tennis team has also collected four national championships in five seasons of post-season eligibility, while softball, baseball, women’s soccer and men’s soccer have each taken home multiple A.I.I. titles over the past five seasons. In 2018, all six Grizzly programs competed in national championship play.

Dr. Darin S.

WILSON

Associate Vice President of Athletics Multiple National Athletics Director of the Year Dr. Darin S. Wilson established the Office of Athletics at Georgia Gwinnett College in late 2011 with the vision of being one of the nation’s premier programs. Off to an incredibly quick start, the Grizzlies are in the process of becoming just that. The Grizzlies seek to develop lifelong leaders of character through academic and athletic excellence, inspired by Wilson’s devotion to the student-athlete experience. He has instilled the program’s five core values: Service, Responsibility, Leadership, Sportsmanship and the Pursuit of Excellence. Kat

IHLENBURG

Head Coach Seventh Season Barry (Fla.), ‘04 The first head coach of the Georgia Gwinnett College softball program, Kat Ihlenburg has developed the Grizzlies into a championship squad built upon toughness, character and a devotion to its community. Ihlenburg led the program to its first NAIA World Series appearance in 2018 -- in just its sixth season. She has led the Grizzlies to three Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) tournament championships, four trips to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament, and recognition as the NAIA Champions of Character team award winner. She has totaled a 241-86-2 (.736) record and back-to-back 50-win seasons in 2018 and 2017. Ihlenburg was named A.I.I. Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2017 after sharing the honor during the 2016 and 2015 seasons. She has led the Grizzlies to conference championships in 2018, 2017 and 2015, and four national tournament bids in 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015. In 2018, she guided the Grizzlies to their first No. 1 national ranking and a school-record 53 victories. The new heights for the program also featured a NAIA World Series appearance -- a first for the program. GGC defeated Oregon Tech in the final game of the Lawrenceville Bracket of the NAIA Opening Round. The Grizzlies also defeated Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) during its first game at the World Series. Ihlenburg received the A.I.I. Coach of the Year award and led the program to the conference title. The 2017 squad had its first 50-win season (50-9-1). GGC hosted the opening round of the NAIA national tournament. Niki Cook captured first team All-America honors by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the NAIA. Georgia Gwinnett finished the 2016 campaign with 44 wins. The centralized theme of continuity was an ever-present factor throughout the season as GGC continued to build its program and establish the standard of achieving excellence.

In her six seasons as head coach Ihlenburg has mentored infielder Cassidy Littlefield, a two-time NAIA first-team All-American and 2015 A.I.I. Player of the Year, and outfielder Niki Cook, a 2018 and 2017 first-team All-American by the NAIA and National Fastpitch Coaches Association, and A.I.I. Player of the Year in 2018 and 2017. Ihlenburg embraces the core values established by Georgia Gwinnett College’s athletic department and NAIA. The 2014 Grizzlies earned the Buffalo Funds NAIA Champions of Character Softball Team award from among 200 softball programs. The Grizzlies take part in numerous community efforts, including working with Special Olympics Georgia and Relay for Life, plus volunteer at many on-campus events and hold youth clinics in the area. Building leaders of character focused on service to the community has been the hallmark of Ihlenburg’s program. Since April 17, 2013, the GGC program has played all home games at the state-of-the-art Grizzly Softball Complex. The on-campus facility features a top-notch natural grass playing surface and bleacher seating for 500 fans. It sits just steps away from the Grizzly softball locker room and Grizzly Athletic Complex. The team uses the building for meetings, strength and conditioning, and academic services. Ihlenburg brought eight years of previous collegiate softball coaching experience to her position at Georgia Gwinnett College. She spent seven years as an assistant at the College of Charleston (S.C.) to then-head coach Shelly Hoerner, for whom Ihlenburg played collegiately. During Ihlenburg’s time with the Cougars, 26 players were selected as all-conference

members in the Southern Conference. Two athletes were named conference Player of the Year and one Pitcher of the Year, while three players were named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region team. As a player, Ihlenburg caught and played outfield for Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. She helped guide the Buccaneers to the 2002 NCAA Division II College World Series and set a school singleseason wins record. She graduated from Barry in 2004 with a bachelor of arts degree in public relations. Ihlenburg is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and has spent multiple seasons coaching abroad in Belgium, Italy, the Czech Republic and the Dominican Republic for USA Athletes International and American International Sports Teams. She also has directed and been an instructor for softball camps held at Georgia Gwinnett College, Georgia Tech, the College of Charleston, the University of Alabama, North Carolina State University, Reinhardt University, Tennessee Tech and the University of Tennessee.
