BETH MARIE’S OLD FASHIONED ICE CREAM
419 S. MAIN ST. • BETHMARIES.COM
Old fashioned is right—the one machine churning out their premium products is from 1927. However, there’s nothing oldfashioned about some of the 185 flavors rotating seasonally, all made in North Texas, like Evil Elvis, 2 Shots Fired and Cowgirl Texas Heat. Giddy-up!

Order shareables of mango shrimp ceviche, quesadillas and chips and salsa. The dock starts to rock with happy hour specials Monday through Thursday. OG CELLARS WINERY ON MAIN
909 S. MAIN ST. • 817-421-9463
This educational tasting room is a satellite shop of a little ol’ winery in Sunset, Texas. Award-winning owner James Hangar says they make and sell wines from 100% Texas-grown grapes; varieties from Spain and Italy thrive in the North Texas climate. He makes “clean-crafted” wines with no additives. He says his vino may look a little cloudy sometimes but that’s a good thing, as it means the properly aged wine is mixing with oxygen. Charcuterie boards and cheese trays complete the vibe.
120 S. MAIN ST. • TEATROBISTROTX.COM
Fine-dining customers are wowed by the award-winning culinary works of celebrity Chef Carla Pellegrino. Candied pork belly bites can start off the evening. Try entrees like Penne Vodka, Salmon Harissa or Lamb Lollipops with a side of truffle fries or sauteed mushrooms. Don’t miss the specialty Teatro cocktails. Grapevine is rich with history, heritage and art experiences that are just waiting to be explored.
BY MADELINE CISNEROS
Grapevine owes much of its evolution to the arrival of the railroad. The Cotton Belt Route made its way to Grapevine in 1888, providing transportation for people and goods. As the town grew, the structures on Main Street transformed from wood to brick buildings. Today, you can learn more about the history of the railroad in Grapevine and take a ride on a 1920s-era train coach at the Grapevine Vintage Railroad located on Main Street. Step back in time by purchasing a ticket at the 1888 Cotton Belt Railroad Depot, which was operated by the St. Louis Southwestern Railway until 1972.
Puffy and Vinny are two of the beloved locomotives that live at the station. Puffy is a steam engine that was built in 1896 at the Cooke Locomotive Works in Paterson, New Jersey. Before she made her first trip to Grapevine in 1993, Puffy was used in California for passenger and freight service. Constructed in 1953, Vinny originally worked for the Santa Fe Railroad.
Railroads can also attract mischief. Stand on the corner of Main and Hudgins streets to watch a standoff between would be train robbers Nat Barrett and Willy Majors atop
the Glockenspiel Clock Tower, which is the only one of its kind in North America. Built in 2012, the clock tower pays tribute to towers constructed in the 19th century as landmarks to signal a nearby train.
EXPLORE ARTIFACTS OF THE PAST
Historic Main Street offers visitors a glimpse into Grapevine’s early days. As you explore, you see historic buildings recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, adaptively reused as galleries, boutiques and chef-driven restaurants.
Located across from Grapevine City Hall, the Torian Cabin is one of the oldest log cabins in Tarrant County. John R. Torian bought the cabin in 1886, and members of the family lived there until the 1940s. When the Torian Cabin was threatened with demolition in 1975, it was disassembled where it stood in the Lonesome Dove community in just 24 hours. The following year, the cabin was dedicated in its restored form on Main Street.
The Bushong Log Cabin is a recent addition to Main Street at Liberty Park Plaza.

George Emanual Bushong moved to Grapevine from Bance, Tennessee, in 1858. The home was originally located near where the Gaylord Texan Resort is today. The cabin housed George, his wife Elizabeth Ann and their children until they built a two-story home in 1880. George Bushong built and operated the first cotton gin in the Grapevine area, as well as founding and serving as the first president of the Grapevine National Bank.
Get a taste of 19th-century farm life by exploring 5.2 acres of the Nash Farm located on Ball Street. In 1859, Thomas Jefferson Nash purchased 110 acres of farmland in Grapevine. He and his family migrated from the Upper South, including Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee, to the Grape Vine Prairie before the Civil War.
The Grape Vine Prairie provided the family with fertile soil for farming and firewood. There was also an abundance of wild mustang grapes, which gave the prairie its name. Today, you can visit the house that Thomas built, his barn and the family cemetery.
AN ART HOT SPOT
Learn more about Grapevine’s past through captivating artwork on the Public Art Trail. Created in the early 1990s, the trail has over 20 stops on and off Main Street that
include bronze sculptures, murals, art studios and galleries and theaters.
Be sure to keep your eye out for the Night Watchman, which is one of 27 sculptures on the trail. In the early days of Grapevine, there was no police department. Instead, brave volunteers patrolled the streets to keep the town safe from 1907-1956. Created by Jack Bryant and dedicated in 1998, this eight-foot sculpture honors these courageous watchers of the night. Catch him on top of Grapevine City Hall and thank him for his service.
Artistic Expression
There’s a reason Grapevine is considered an art hub in North Texas, and that’s because there’s art around every corner. BY MOLLIE JAMISON
In Grapevine, you really can find artwork on every corner. Both leaders and locals have worked hard to preserve the destination’s past and invest in the future of the arts. Every year, creatives from all over North Texas gather in Grapevine to gallery hop, attend hands-on classes and see live performances.
The best way to kick off any visit to Grapevine is with a stroll along the familyfriendly Public Art Trail, located between
Northwest Highway and Dallas Road. Explore the city center by foot as you spot unique sculptures and meaningful murals along the way. With 18 of the trail’s 27 stops on Historic Main Street, the downtown area is a perfect place to dive into Grapevine’s vibrant culture.
History buffs will not want to miss Peace Circle, a public work featuring 11 bronze statues on the corner of Dallas Road and Main Street, commemorating Sam Houston’s
amicable meeting with chiefs from the Delaware, Chickasaw, Waco, Tawakoni, Keechi, Caddo, Anadarko, Ioni, Biloxi and Cherokee Nations in 1843.
Coming Home is another favorite, which has special meaning for veterans and their families. The two-piece sculpture, located at 705 South Main Street, by the Cotton Belt District Depot, depicts the moment a soldier returns home and is greeted with a loving embrace. Look closely to see intricate details representing different military branches and faiths.
Another nine sculptures, including the 9/11 Flight Crew Memorial, can be found across other parts of town.
For more outdoor art, check out Parr Park Rock Art Trail, a hidden gem located at 3000 William D. Tate Avenue. Any craft or nature lover will enjoy walking along a path lined with thousands of impressively painted stones. The Capital of Texas® Christmas Christmas
Your guide to the places to eat, play, shop and stay during the Christmas season. BY TYLER HICKS
If Buddy the Elf had decided to travel to Grapevine instead of Manhattan, he probably would have stayed. After all, the destination has rightfully earned the title of Christmas Capital of Texas®, with every year getting even brighter. And even if you don’t share Buddy’s boisterous passion for the holidays, it’s still impossible to be a Scrooge when you’re enjoying the sights, sounds, eats and attractions of Grapevine at Christmastime. So let’s talk about how it began:
Grapevine’s been called the Christmas Capital of Texas® for decades, but the title was made official by the Texas State Senate in 2009. Then State Senator Jane Nelson put Proclamation Number 556 before the Senate Committee. City Councilwoman Sharron Rogers and Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Paul W. McCallum testified before the committee. Secretary of State Nelson was proud to get it passed in an unanimous vote.
A town rich in history, Grapevine’s roots as the Christmas Capital of Texas run deep.
“Grapevine has always been excited about Christmas. In fact, it goes back to the beginning, when the first settlers woke up on Christmas Day in 1844. The history records show it was a White Christmas,” said Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Paul W. McCallum, “and we’ve been building on that ever since.”
Grapevine’s heritage railroad, Grapevine Vintage Railroad (GVRR), began its first Santa’s North Pole Express excursions in 2002. It had humble beginnings with just two excursions a week between Thanksgiving
and Christmas with about 50 families taking part. Today there are now more than 150 excursions where thousands of families board each year for this beloved tradition.
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the Christmas Capital of Texas was embraced by merchants, hotels and attractions. It continued to grow with hundreds of Christmas events city-wide. When Gaylord Texan Resort opened in 2004, it was another major cornerstone for the Christmas Capital of Texas with its ICE! attraction and incredible shows and family activities of Lone Star Christmas.
Santa’s Wonderland at Bass Pro Shops and Snowland at Great Wolf Lodge add further excitement each year. Now, millions of visitors come to experience Christmas Capital of Texas magic which features more than 1,400 events over 40 days. “It’s really special how each year the destination comes together

for the season, and still keeps that vintage, classic Christmas charm at the center,” CVB Chairman Joe Szymaszek said.
Here’s a small taste of what you’ll experience during your Grapevine Christmas Getaway:
GET MERRY ON MAIN STREET
This is where you can shop, snack or sit back and relax in the heart of the Christmas Capital of Texas®. The annual Carol of Lights might be the official opening bell for the yuletide festivities, but you can stroll down Historic Main Street at any point during the season
and enjoy the decorative storefronts dotting nearly every inch of this thoroughfare. The Italian eatery Farina’s has been known to put up dozens of trees (including some that are musical), while the old-fashioned Main Street Barber boasts a veritable winter wonderland of decorations each year.
HO, HO, HOTELS
The Gaylord has ICE!, an immersive ice sculpture extravaganza that takes worldrenowned artists hundreds of hours to create out of 2 million pounds of ice. As if that

weren’t enough, the resort is also home to Lone Star Christmas: a multi-acre experience where families can enjoy legions of lights, create seasonal crafts and opt for adventure by skating on the ice or tubing on the snow. Visitors (or staycationers) can also venture to the Great Wolf Lodge, where the fanfavorite wolf-themed Christmas tree is the perfect complement to Snowland: an annual celebration of all things Christmas. Dance parties, scavenger hunts and tons of games and activities are all on hand to keep the whole family happy throughout your stay.
Merry & Bright Drone Show
SWEETS SANTA WOULD LOVE
Remember: During Christmastime, calories simply don’t count. That’s why you need to check out the old-fashioned soda shop and ice cream offerings at Beth Marie’s on Main Street, which is also home to the craveworthy candy store Rocket Fizz and the confectionery, Kilwin’s. At the latter, you can find some of the most delectable fudge south of the North Pole. If your chocolate hankering
hasn’t been cured, it’s a short walk to Dr. Sue’s, where the chocolate bark and gourmet candy boxes make perfect stocking stuffers. The truffles and toffee at nearby Chocolate Hangover are known to be a favorite of the elves (and by “elves,” we mean “everyone”), and, if you’re hosting guests or being hosted yourself, you can’t go wrong with a custom cake from Legacy Cakes.
SIGHTS FOR THE SEASON
Peace Plaza, located just off Main Street at Grapevine Main Station, is home to a dreamy ice rink that’s picture-perfect for both a romantic date or some family fun. When you combine that with a giant live Christmas tree and an observation deck offering expansive views of the Metroplex from 150 feet in the air, it’s clear why this plaza is often referred to as the “Rockefeller Center of the Southwest.” Grapevine Main Station also includes a 20,000 square foot European-style food hall called Harvest Hall filled with eight international scratch kitchens and the Third Rail entertainment venue and bar (which turns into the festive Holly Jolly Bar for the Christmas season). You can also amble over to the British Emporium on Main Street, which has all of the tea, biscuits and other imported UK goods you’d need to make any event fulfill your Love, Actually dreams. And last (but certainly not least), anyone looking for a little show with their meal needs to check out the Texas Star Dinner Theater, where the regular murder mystery events take on a Christmas theme each year.

The Ultimate Wine Destination
In a state known for vino, being dubbed the Wine Capital of Texas is the utmost compliment.
BY MARK STUERTZ
Grapevine, that Texas town that oozes distinctive charm expressed in stunning historic buildings and landmarks, breathes wine. It’s a destination graced with annual, robust wine celebrations that mark the slow but perceptible evolution in the Texas winemaking arts.
Contrary to what you might think, Grapevine isn’t named after Vitis Vinifera, the species of grape that produces some of the world’s most revered wines like France’s Bordeaux, Italy’s Barolo and the cult cabernets of California’s Napa Valley. It’s named after the Vitis Mustangensis, or the Mustang grape, a rustic wild fruit that once thrived in the area’s soils. Early settlers christened the ground “Grape Vine Prairie” on account of the proliferating Mustang, a grape used in jelly, pie fillings, wool dyes, grape juice and wine since before the Civil War.
The name stuck.
Established in 1844, Grapevine has since become known as “The Wine Capital of Texas,” with the Historic Main Street District home to a cluster of nine winery tasting
rooms. Though Grapevine has no commercial vineyards, many locals cultivate their own small plots. These vineyards are often cultivated from grapevines dispensed at the Blessing of the Vines ceremony preceding the destination’s annual New Vintage Wineries & Galleries Trail experience. Established in 1992, New Vintage is a fête of wine tastings
and art exhibits at the Main Street tasting rooms, galleries and artist studios. Hence, Grapevine is a good barometer of the slow-rolling revolution in the Texas wine industry that’s been unfolding over the last 15 years, if not longer. Gone is the emphasis on traditional French varietals like Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir,

grapes that don’t necessarily grow well in the Texas climate. Texas vintners are replacing these varietals with warm-weather varieties native to Italy, Southern France and Spain. The result is better wine and a willingness among consumers to try pours crafted from varietals they may have never heard of or may not even effectually pronounce.
Grapevine is at the nexus of this transformation. Its walkable Urban Wine Trail draws novices and connoisseurs alike to its tasting rooms—each with a distinctive vibe—offering special classes throughout the year to elevate vino IQs.
“Grapevine, in my opinion, is one of the most innovative cities I’ve ever known,” says Paul Bonarrigo, founder of the Messina Hof Winery in Bryan, with wife Merrill. “Their City Council works in tandem with the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The impact that they have had on the Texas wine industry is enormous.”
Bonnarrigo cites GrapeFest®, the annual wine festival established in 1987, with putting Grapevine on the Texas wine map. During its
first few years, this one-day festival drew just a few thousand wine enthusiasts. Today, it spans over four days and draws some 250,000 grape aficionados eager to celebrate wines from around the world, but most especially those from Texas (see story on page 40).
During GrapeFest’s earliest days, Bonarrigo says, the community developed a program where residents adopted wineries, providing room and board for winemakers to ease the financial burdens of festival participation.
This inspired Bonarrigo to launch a tasting room and events center at the circa-1891 replica Wallis Hotel in 2014. He says he’s noticed that his clientele has become more sophisticated, transitioning from sweeter wines to those crafted from obscure varietals like Sagrantino, a red wine variety grown primarily in the Umbria region of Italy.
Chris Hankins, general manager at Cross Timbers Winery, echoes this sentiment. He, too, has noticed visitors exploring lesserknown varietals that grow well in Texas’ warm climes, like Tempranillo from Spain and Sangiovese, Italy’s most planted wine
variety and the pride of the Tuscan region. He, in part, credits the eclectic assortment of wineries and tasting rooms in Grapevine’s Historic District for inspiring this shift.
TEXAS WINE MONTH
October isn’t just for Autumn leaves and restless ghouls. It’s a 31-day celebratory stretch for Texas wine. In 1999, the Texas Department of Agriculture dubbed October as Texas Wine Month to honor Texas winegrowers and producers and mark the end of the annual grape harvests. Currently, Texas has 443 wineries with more than 1,450 acres of vineyards under cultivation, according to
WineAmerica. Texas has multiple wine-growing regions and eight recognized American Viticultural Areas (AVA), which designate the geographic pedigree of wines. A hub for wine enthusiasts, Grapevine is the premier destination to celebrate this distinguished month by visiting its Texas winery tasting rooms, many offering specials during Texas Wine Month.
“The nice thing about the tasting rooms here is that they’re all unique,” he says. “Everybody’s got their own different thing going on. It doesn’t feel like a competition. It’s more like teamwork.”
He adds that Grapevine boasts an international milieu on account of its proximity to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the Gaylord Texan Resort and the many conventions they host. Drawing more than 12 million visitors each year, Grapevine wineries often take center stage.
“There are people from all over the place,” he says. “We’re a large grouping of tasting
rooms. That’s part of the allure.” The other part is the singularly unique location.
Wine tours are a regular sight on Main Street as guests sample vinos from several stops along the Urban Wine Trail. Grapevine Wine Tours takes groups (including bachelorette parties, ladies nights and more) to tasting rooms where they can learn from the experts, taste some fabulous red and white varietals and enjoy amazing cuisine.

URBAN WINE TRAIL/ CRAFT BEVERAGE TRAIL
A collection of nine wineries tucked into the Main Street District, Grapevine’s Urban Wine Trail inspires visitors to sip various wines and partake in its trendsetting wine culture. Here, visitors can explore the diverse flavors poured in Grapevine’s tasting rooms, sourced from across the Lone Star State and beyond.
Speckled among engaging restaurants, boutiques and art galleries, the Urban Wine Trail wineries include Bingham Family Vineyards, Bull Lion Ranch Winery, Cross Timbers Winery, Grape Vine Springs Winery, Landon Winery, Messina Hof Winery, OG Cellars and WINEstein’s Tasting Room. The distinct, engaging culture of Grapevine is what makes this picturesque city such a captivating draw. Don’t miss it.
combines stories of hauntings, past and present, along with the origins of Historic Main Street.
“When I first started, I didn’t have a lot of information,” he says of Grapevine ghost lore. “I had to do a lot of digging.”
The research paid off. He unearthed Grapevine’s often-elusive paranormal peculiarities. After arming participants with a glass of wine, he guides them on a tour of the most specter-ridden establishments in the historic corridor. These include Willhoite’s Restaurant, Holy Grounds coffee shop and the Urban Wine Trail’s own Cross Timbers Winery where weird, unexplainable phenomena occur, such as chairs that randomly shift on their own, according to employees.
Perhaps it’s no surprise that otherworldly phantoms should animate Grapevine’s heady blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication. The destination is bursting with spirit and is pleasantly haunted by the ancient art of winemaking, designating it a must-visit for aspiring oenophiles. The ghost of the Mustang lives on.

Experience GrapeFest® –A Texas Wine Experience
Grapevine’s beloved signature wine festival takes place yearly in September. BY TYLER
HICKS
Grapevine knows how to throw a party and Grapevine knows wine. Put the two together and you have the magic of GrapeFest®. In fact, the festival will mark its 39th event in September.
Expect to have a “grape” time September 11, 12, 13 and 14 on Historic Main Street at the 39th Annual GrapeFest – A Texas Wine Experience. The 2025 festival theme is The Grape Gatsby, a nod to the Roaring Twenties (which we are currently residing in) and the 100th anniversary of what some consider the greatest American novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
You don’t have to be a wine expert to enjoy GrapeFest, although experts do too. There’s a lot to see and do along Historic Main Street during the festival and fortunately there are four days to fit it all in.
The experiences are vast, and you can participate in the ever-popular People’s Choice Wine Tasting Classic, the Largest Consumer Judged Wine Competition in the country. Thousands of attendees sample more than a hundred Texas wines and decide which ones get Gold, Silver and Bronze. They judge more than a dozen categories. You can meet the winemakers and winery owners and they’re happy to share their stories and work to win the important accolades.
The International Wine Experience is another top draw, where you can sample wines of the world. There is a featured country every year and opportunities to meet with international winemakers. Wines from Grapevine Sister Cities Barossa, Australia, Parras de la Fuente, Mexico, and Krems, Austria, are also featured.
Other favorites include the Champagne Terrace
featuring bubbly from around the world and educational seminars include wine pairing workshops where you can learn to pair your favorite vinos with your favorite bites and charcuterie board workshops.
There are fun, but fierce, competitions by way of GrapeStomp and the Champagne Cork Shoot-Off (see sidebar) and live music up and down Main Street. The shopping is top notch and you can browse dozens of artisan vendors showcasing handmade clothes, signature hats and everything from pendant earrings to charm necklaces that your friends will rave about.
The festival is family-friendly too. KidZone has activities, crafts and dance parties for the little ones while the Carnival and Midway has games and rides for all ages. Don’t miss the bird’s eye view of the fun and Main Street from atop the Ferris Wheel. GRAPEFEST.COM

39 TH ANNUAL GRAPEFEST ® : FERMENTED FUN EVERY YEAR
As GrapeFest® has grown, so has the potential for fun. Here’s a breakdown of some of the events and attractions that explain the festival's popularity—and keep people coming back for more.
Historic Main Street
The site of the event is itself an attraction. As you walk down this strip of timeless Americana, you can pop into art galleries, ice cream parlors and, of course, winery tasting rooms.
People’s Choice
Each year, the fan-favorite People’s Choice Wine Tasting Classic celebrates the best wines in Texas. This competition is the largest of its kind in the Southwest, as dozens of winemakers submit hundreds of creations. What’s more, visitors get to meet the craftsmen behind the scenes and learn everything they’ve ever wanted to know about the winemaking process. The best wines, chosen by the fans, are awarded on Sunday.
International Wine Experience
Nestled under a canopy of trees, this is the spot where you can sample wines from international wineries while enjoying live music. In 2024, visitors sampled savory flavors from Grapevine’s Sister Cities, Barossa, South Australia; Parras de la Fuente, Mexico and Krems, Austria: three areas known for their delicious wines.
Champagne Terrace
While the temps typically cool off in mid-September, the shaded Champagne Terrace is a popular place for escaping the bustle and sipping some bubbly with friends.
GrapeStomp
This is another fan favorite (albeit a far messier one). Visitors pair off into teams of two and see who can make the most juice—using only their bare feet—from 18 pounds of grapes. The coveted Purple Foot Award is awarded on Sunday after the Grand Champion StompOff.
Rosé Rendezvous at the Gazebo
Just when you think GrapeFest® couldn’t be more delicious, you arrive at the Rosé Rendezvous: a place where you can quite literally “rosé all day.” Sip on a variety of rosé offerings while taking in live tunes at Grapevine’s gorgeous Town Square Gazebo.
Champagne Cork Shoot-Off
Sure, you are a good traditional shooter, but can you accurately shoot a Champagne cork right off the bottle? Prizes are awarded to the highest point shooter per session, per day, with winners invited back to the Grand Shoot-Off finals.
Raise a Glass
Main Street Fest – A Timeless Texas Tradition is a celebration of community, culture and creativity.
Visitors and locals agree that the always-inviting hometown vibe of Grapevine is one of the destination’s most enticing features. The enchanting effect is due in large part to the charming Historic Main Street. In this renowned Historic District, shops, history, great restaurants and family-friendly entertainment are year-round mainstays, with visitors flocking to walkable venues for date night, family celebrations and shopping excursions to nab one-of-a-kind gifts.
Each Spring, the welcoming sidewalks and spotlight locations of Main Street truly come alive during the highly anticipated annual Main Street Fest – A Timeless Texas Tradition®
In true Texas form, Main Street Fest gets bigger and better every year. The 41 st Annual Main Street Fest is scheduled for May 16, 17 and 18, 2025, marking the 41st anniversary of the family-favorite festival that truly offers entertainment and fun for everyone. With a typical attendance of more than 100,000, veteran attendees know it’s a “clear your calendars” tradition. This year is no exception, as event leaders have been busy planning ways to elevate the experience with expanded vendors, more featured artisans and entertainment and knock-your-socks-off games and food.
BY JENNIFER BLALOCK
The focus remains on curating the musthaves—a variety of great musicians and performers, mouth-watering food options and the most gifted local craft vendors and visual artists in North Texas. “It’s such a great opportunity to showcase what Grapevine has to offer,” explains Visit Grapevine’s Director of Communications Elizabeth Schrack. “The community really comes together for this event.” Schrack loves seeing all the families enjoying the festival’s carnival rides and
aromatic food as one of her favorite Main Street Fest pastimes.
Attendees don’t have to leave the kids at home with the babysitter. Instead, Main Street Fest is the perfect occasion to bring the babysitter along. But don’t stop there—invite the neighbors, extended family and friends for an experience that is sure to create some lifetime memories and lots of laughs. Here are just a few of the top-tier activities to get you in the festival mood:

Urban Oasis in a Thriving Metropolis
Lake Grapevine caters to those who like to kayak, sail, jet ski and even surf without leaving the Metroplex. BY HEIDE BRANDES
The gentle lapping of water against my clear kayak creates a soothing rhythm, a stark contrast to the distant hum of the city I was just driving through moments before. As I dip my paddle into Lake Grapevine's cool waters, the sun glinting off the lake creates a light show that dances across my transparent vessel.
I'm mere miles from the bustling heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex (almost equidistant to the two cities), yet here, surrounded by the natural shoreline and open sky, I feel worlds away.
A fish darts beneath me, its scales flashing in the early light. I pause, letting my kayak drift, and take in the scene. A great blue heron stalks the shallows to my left, while overhead, a red-tailed hawk circles lazily on a thermal. The juxtaposition is almost surreal—nature's wild beauty thriving within arm's reach of one of Texas's largest urban areas.
“Lake Grapevine is a fantastic place for visitors and locals,” says Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau Director of Communications Elizabeth Schrack. “People can get away from the hustle and bustle of the cities and spend time in nature. The perfect day includes some time at Lake Grapevine, followed by a visit to Grapevine's Historic Main Street eating at a nice café, shopping in the locally owned boutiques and enjoying some wine on the Urban Wine Trail.”
On Lake Grapevine, the stress of city life melts away with each stroke, replaced by a sense of adventure and connection to the natural world that I never expected to find so close to the urban sprawl of the Metroplex. This 8,000-acre reservoir is not just a feast for the eyes; it's a playground for those seeking aquatic adventures and lakeside relaxation.
KAYAK WITH A CLEAR VIEW OF UNDERWATER WONDERS
As the sun begins to climb, casting a golden glow across the lake's surface, early risers gather at the shoreline for a unique experience. Get Up and Go Kayaking offers clear kayak tours that provide an unobstructed view of the lake's underwater world. These transparent vessels allow paddlers to observe fish darting beneath them and aquatic plants swaying in the currents, creating an immersive connection with nature.
“Lake Grapevine is surrounded by beautiful parks, and we kayak in one of the coves on the lake (Mcpherson Slough), which is a beautiful area to kayak,” says Paul Heilman, who owns Get Up and Go Kayaking with his wife, Shanna.
“There is a creek that flows into the cove, and when the water depth allows, exploring the creek is an added adventure
that puts you in the heart of nature. It’s amazing this serene, nature-filled lakeside escape is so close to DFW Airport.”
For those who prefer their adventures tinged with magic, the company also offers sunset and glow kayak tours. As dusk settles over the lake, kayakers push off from shore in vessels adorned with LED lights, creating a starburst display on the water. The combination of the fading light, the gentle lapping of waves and the colorful illumination transforms the lake into an enchanted waterscape.
“All equipment is provided for our guests to enjoy their adventure on Grapevine Lake,” Heilman says. “The daytime eco tour features a relaxing tour of McPherson Slough cove,

looking for wildlife and enjoying the natural beauty of the shore. The evening tour also explores the cove, but we get to enjoy the amazing North Texas sunset over the lake. After the sun goes down, we turn on the LED lights and the glow adventure begins.”
SAIL INTO THE SUNSET WITH ISLANDBOUND ADVENTURE SAILING
For a different perspective on the lake, Island Bound Adventure Sailing invites visitors to experience the joy of windpowered exploration. Their sunset cruises are particularly popular, offering a frontrow seat to the nightly spectacle of Texas’ famous sunsets, while the gentle rocking of the boat creates a relaxing and romantic atmosphere that's perfect for unwinding after a day of activities.
Those inspired by their sailing experience can take it a step further with sailing
lessons. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, novices can learn the ropes— literally and figuratively—mastering the art of harnessing the wind to glide across the water's surface.
FUEL UP AT BIG DADDY’S CANTINA
After working up an appetite on the water, refuel at Big Daddy's Cantina. This lakeside restaurant serves up Tex-Mex favorites with a view. From sizzling fajitas to refreshing margaritas, the menu is sure to help your body fuel up. The restaurant's patio provides diners with a picturesque backdrop of the lake, making it an ideal spot to linger over a meal and plan the next adventure.
Chef Miguel Rodriguez, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, brings generations of family recipes to life in Big Daddy's kitchen. His signature dish, the Pescado a la Talla, features locally sourced black bass

WHOAZONE RETURNS IN 2025
Excitement is building among locals and regular visitors alike as news spreads about the return of WhoaZone in 2025. This floating aqua park promises to bring a new level of excitement to Lake Grapevine. Featuring inflatable obstacles, slides and climbing walls, WhoaZone will offer a unique way to cool off and challenge oneself on hot Texas days.
After a hiatus due to high water levels, General Manager Jen Rice says the WhoaZone will come back “bigger and better than ever."
WhoaZone offers outdoor recreation for the whole family, featuring inflatable obstacles like the thrilling Wibit Peaks.
"It's narrower bridges, a little bit higher up, a little bit more challenging. So it's definitely for our thrill seekers out there," Rice says. “Our plan is to open Memorial Day weekend of 2025, pending nature of course. While the WhoaZone experience will be similar to what it's been in the past, we are looking at bringing in some new obstacles onto the floating water park, and we're exploring additional amenities as well to enhance the WhoaZone experience for our Grapevine guests next year.”
For those seeking relaxation, floating AquaBanas (inflatables) provide a perfect vantage point.
"It's really the perfect spot for parents to kick back and relax while the kids are out playing," Rice says, adding that enhanced
birthday party packages and new amenities are also planned.
GET YOUR HEART PUMPING AT DFW SURF
For those looking to combine fitness with fun, DFW Surf offers a variety of sporting experiences on Lake Grapevine.
“DFW Surf is 21st-century lake life and inland surfing lifestyle,” says Tyler Marshall, company founder and surf coach. “Forty years ago, it was all about water skiing; 20 years ago, it was all about wake boarding; and now it is all about wake surfing.” DFW Surf and coaches have pioneered the sports of stand-up paddleboarding and wake surfing since 2007.
DFW Surf offers a variety of outdoor experiences including paddleboard yoga, wake surfing, e-foiling and wing foiling (also known as wing surfing).
Clockwise, from top left: Paddleboarding with DFW Surf; Island Bound Adventure Sailing; Big Daddy's Cantina
Beginners can start with calm morning sessions, while more experienced paddlers might challenge themselves in the afternoon when the breeze picks up, creating gentle swells to navigate.
Other experiences include Sunset and Full Moon paddle tours plus private boat cruises.
“For families or locals, we recommend joining our Surf Club, which is the ultimate water sports family membership,” Marshall says. “You can just show up anytime and grab equipment and get on the water. Local kids can hop in one of our summer kids' camps and learn their first water sports. We cater to tons of visitors thanks to the DFW Airport hub and surrounding hotels, and we are a destination surf school for many families whose kids are looking to take their skills to the next level.”
SET SAIL ON YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
For visitors who prefer to chart their own course, Silver Lake Marina offers a variety
of boat rentals. From pontoon boats perfect for family outings to speedboats for those seeking a thrill, the marina provides options to suit different preferences and group sizes. Renting a boat opens up possibilities for finding secluded coves for swimming, spots for fishing or simply cruising the lake's expanse while soaking in the Texas sunshine.
Lake Grapevine's array of activities makes it a versatile destination for travelers and local families alike. Whether you're seeking a peaceful paddle in a clear kayak, the romance of a sunset sail, the excitement of water sports or simply a day of lakeside relaxation, this Texas oasis delivers. As the lake continues to evolve with additions like the upcoming WhoaZone, it cements its status as a premier outdoor recreation destination in the heart of the Lone Star State.
“It’s such a gorgeous gem in the middle of the metroplex,” says Schrack. “People may not think ‘outdoorsy’ when they think North Texas, but they should! There are loads of
hiking and biking trails regularly enjoyed by visitors and locals, and then we have all the activities on the lake.”
The lake's proximity to the town of Grapevine, known for its historic downtown and wineries, adds another layer of appeal. Visitors can easily combine their aquatic adventures with explorations of local culture and cuisine, creating a well-rounded travel experience.
