2015년 8월15일, 광복 70주년을 기념하여 서울과 뉴욕에서 활동하는 70인의 한국 디자이너가 태극기를 주제로 전시를 진행하였습니다. ‘기리다. 그리다. 새기다.’라는 타이틀로 진행된 이번 전시는 8월 7일(금)~8월 21일(금) 그룹와이(구 윤디자인연구소) 갤러리뚱에서, 8월 14일(금)~8월 21일(금) 뉴욕 Space Gabi에서 성황리에 열렸습니다. 이번 전시는 뉴욕에서 활동하는 젊은 디자이너 그룹인 K/REATE(대표 이상인)와 Group Y(구 윤 디자인연구소 대표 편석훈)와 함께 광복 70주년을 맞아 색다른 전시를 공동기획으로 진행 되었으며, 국내외에서 활동중인 대한민국 70명의 디자이너들과 서울과 뉴욕에서 동시에 같은 주제, 같은 전시물로 전시를 열었습니다. 이번 전시의 목적은 과거 되찾은 대한민국의 70년을 기념하고, 앞으로 되찾아야 할 대한민국을 태극기를 통해 그려내면서 우리 마음 속에 되새길 수 있는 시간을 갖고자 하는데 의의가 있습니다. 태극기는 기쁨의 순간에도 슬픔의 순간에도 늘 함께 해왔던 우리나라를 대표하는 상징적 이미지이면서도 예술적인 면에서도 훌륭한 모티브이기도 합니다. 이번 전시를 참여 해주신 대한민국 70인 디자이너 분들과 많은 도움을 주신 관계지분들께 다시 한번 감사 드립니다. 그룹와이 편석훈 대표

대한민국의 광복은 선조들의 숭고하고 값진 희생에 의해 이루어졌다. 광복70주년을 맞이하여 우리 선조들의 무한했던 투쟁과 용기 수많은 희생을 다시 한 번 되새겨 보기를 바라는 의미를 담았다.
Independence day of korea’ was honorable self-sacrificing achievement of our forebears. On the 70th anniversary of independence day, it contains the meaning to remind our ancestors’ endless struggle, courage and countless sacrifice.

공동제작 (스튜디오 홍단)
1919년, 한반도의 전 민족을 분기시키고 세계를 향해 독립의 이유와 결의를 표명한 기미독립선언서는 인도주의에 입각한 비폭력적이고 평화적인 자주 독립 방법을 제시하고 있다. 홍단은 2015년 광복 70주년을 맞아 선조들의 정신을 기리는 의미에서 독립선언서의 내용을 다시 한번 마음에 새기고자 한다. 강건한 느낌의 타이포를 개발해 독립선언서의 첫 문장을 적고, 그 안에 태극기를 담았다. 독립선언서의 텍스트가 주는 강한 울림을 함께 느껴보길 바란다.
In 1919, the March First Proclamation of Korean Independence suggests nonviolent and peaceful method of sovereign independence through diverging all the nation and expression of the reason and determination for independence to the world. Hong-Dan tries to remind the details of the Proclamation of Korean Independence in remembrance of our ancestors’ spirit for 70th anniversary of the Independence of 2015. We developed a typography with robust feeling and used it to write the first sentence of the Proclamation of Korean Independence, in which Taegeukgi is included. I hope viewers will join us and feel the strong echo of the text within the Proclamation of Korean Independence.

이 포스터는 한국 국기, 더 정확하게는 국기의 중앙에 위치하며 양극성과 균형, 조화, 순환, 그리고
태극을 원으로 표현하지 않고 두 개의 고리가 안정적으로 맞물려 있는 형태로 표현했는데, 나라에
태극기에 품에는 음과 양이, 선에는 유연함과 강직함이 녹아있다. 이번에 재해석한 태극기의
태극기의 모티브와 로티 프로젝트(Roti Project)를 콜라보레이션 한 작품입니다. 로티 프로젝트는
예로부터 음과 양을 표현하던 태극마크로 부터 영감을 받았다. 숫자 7과 0을 이용한 인쇄술로,
대한 개인적인 바람을 담았다. 전체적으로 ‘기념우표’ 같은 느낌을 주고 싶었다.
이미지 역시 그 범위 안에 있다. ‘조화’ 다. 모든 국기는 민족적인 무엇을 표현하는 것이어서
버려진 폐품을 활용하여 로봇형태의 아트웍으로 재 탄생시키는 제 개인 프로젝트입니다. 광복절
작품에는 한국인의 정(情)을 모티프로 해 이미지화 했다. 작게는 색과 선, 크게는 의미를 단순화
70주년을 기념하여 폐품들은 태극기 형태의 로티로 재탄생 되었습니다. 일제강점기에서 해방되어
하는 과정을 통해 정(情) 이라는 따뜻한 감정을 선명하게 들어냈다.
대한민국 정부가 수립되었던 그날을 기념하여 태극기 형태의 ‘로티’ 가 퍼레이드를 떠나는 모습을
나란히 배열하는 대신 태극 마크와 같이 서로 병렬하며 맞물리게끔 표현하였다. 그러나 태극마크가 완벽한 조화를 상징하는 것과는 다르게 7과 0의 맞물린 모습은 불완전한 과정을 의미하며, 이는 또한 내가 지난 몇 년 동안 정이 든 한국의 모습을 상징적으로 나타내기도 한다. 불완전한 조화. 병치.
This poster took inspiration from the Korean national flag and more specifically the Taeguk symbol which resides in the center of the Korean flag and represents such concepts as polarity, balance, harmony, circulation and the age-old figures of yin and yang. This is a typographic play on the numbers 7 and 0 and as opposed to positioning them side by side, I’ve intentionally juxtaposed and interlocked them similar to the Taeguk symbol. But whereas the Taeguk symbol represents perfect harmony, the interlocking 7 and 0 represent an imperfect process which also symbolically represents the Korea I have fondly become familiar with over the past few years. Imperfect harmony. Juxtaposition.

Instead of expressing Teageuk as a circle, I chose to describe it as a figure in which two rings being securely interlocked to one another; this is intended to represent my personal wish for the country. As a whole, I want it to be seen like a ‘commemorative stamp’.

The figure of Teageukgi implies Yin and Yang, while the lines express softness and strength. The image of re-interpreted Teageukgi also falls within such boundaries. It’s the ‘harmony’. Every flag of a country represents something national with it, I tried to express the image of Korean Jung (情) as a motif. Through the simplification process of colors and lines, as well as the meaning, I tried to clearly depict the warm feeling within Jung (情).

This is a collaborative work of Taegeukgi’s motif and Roti Project. Roti Project is a personal project of mine that utilizes thrown away waste articles and re-create them into robot-shaped art works. In celebration of the 70th anniversary of Independence Day of Korea, waste articles are recreated into a roti in the form of Taegeukgi. In order to celebrate the day when the Korean government could finally be freed of Japanese colonial period and re-established, I expressed the scene in which the Teageukgishaped-Roti leaving the parade in a graphic work.

한국 역사에 대한 올바른 <앎>, 한국의 태극과 함께 다양한 상징들을 지닌 소재들이 서로 복잡하게 얽혀 한 글자를 구성하도록 했습니다. 글자의 의미 자체를 시각화하는 과정을 통해, <안다는 것>이 지닌 그 복잡한 측면들을 어지럽게 얽힌 그림들 안에서 되새겨 볼 수 있도록 하고 싶습니다.
I intended to express the theme of correct <Knowledge> about Korean History, Korea’s Teageuk, and other factors with various symbols entangled with each other, while consisting of one letter. Through the process of visualizing the meaning of the letter itself, I wanted to remind people of the complicated sides of <Knowing> within the entangled pictures.

8FEAT 1st PROJECT 광복을 한지 70년이 흘렀습니다만, 70년간 우리는 통일이라는 미션을 가지고 현재를 살고 있습니다. 서로 다른 국가의 체제에서 발전을 하며 우리는 너무 많은 시간을 흘러온 것이 아닌가 생각합니다. 남북을 대표하는 수도의 모습을 가운데로 태극기의 물결 라인과 휴전선을 비유하고 미래에는 이 모습이 하나가 되는 모습을 그리며 포스터를 제작했습니다.
The menacing Teageukgi of the past, now it guides us through like a flower light. Taegeukgi of the past, it rises you. Taegeukgi of the past, now it rises with you as a flower light.
Based on the wave of Taegeukgi, the upper part is red and the lower part is blue. Coincidently, it seems as if it is describing the division of South and North; the red representing communism, while the blue expressing the freedom. Although 70 years have passed since the Independence, we are still living today with a mission of unification. It seems as though too much time has passed in the division of two of which with different national systems. With the figure of the capital, representing Both South and North, at its center, and the wave of Taegeukgi representing the cease-fire line, the poster was created in wish of the country’s unification in the future.

광복 후 70년이 지났지만, 대한민국의 주인인 국민이 스스로의 주권을 찾아 민주주의가 오기까지는 오랜 시간이 걸렸다. 국민이 권력을 갖고 그 권력을 행사하는 민주주의 국가로서 우리는 이제 시작이다.
Although 70 years have passed since the Independence Day, it took a long time for the Korean nation to find its sovereignty as the proprietor of the country. It is only the beginning for us to have and practice the authority as the citizens of a democracy.

The poster was created in remembrance of the people, who made it possible to wave Taegeukgi on August 15, 1945, and as a reminder for the message “now exists because they were there.” The ‘ㄱ’ of Gwang expresses the independence activist, Kim Gu, while ‘ㅂ’ of Bock is motivated by Dr. Yoon, Bong-Gill, and colors were chosen to go well with the Taegeuk mark in the background. I wish that our patriotism could spread out further like this gradually widening Taegeuk mark.

If we search “national flag, Taeguki” online, it provides vast result of “how to draw Taeguki.” To recognize the Taeguki right, it is crucial to know the way of drawing it well. This drawing illustrates an order four black trigram and emphasizes top and bottom of Taeguk pattern.

For the celebration of 70th anniversary of Independence Day, reinterpretation of Taeguekgi, which is the most significant symbol of Korea, is expressed as people gathered together and having a party together with Kim Gu and Yu Gwan-Sun, while everyone is wearing red upper- and blue under garments. Lines and surfaces are used for witty depiction, in which the shapes of the people are described as Taegeuk marks, while the scene with firecrackers flattering around is expressed as geon-gon-gam-ri.

우리들에게 광복절은 일본으로부터 우리 민족이 해방되었던 날에 앞서, 일상에서 우리를
일본의 무단 통치, 문화 식민, 민족 말살정책 등 끔찍하고 참혹했던 광복 이전. 당시의 민족은
현대적인 해석을 위해 캐릭터를 캔버스화하여 태극기의 태극모양을 모티브로 광복의 역사적
‘광복-빛을 되찾는’ 과정을 그리다. 어두웠던 시대의 많은 시련들을 뚫고 빛이 새어 나오는 과정을
해방시켜주는 하루의 공휴일이지 않았을까? 그런 우리들의 광복절을 현대의 아파트 각 세대에서
죽음을 불사하고 태극기를 흔들어 나라를 지켜냈다. 하지만, 70년이 지난 지금도 여전히 일본의
장면을 퍼레이드라는 즐거운 테마로 표현하였다. 우리나라의 특징 중 하나인 4계절을 캐릭터의
표현했다. 폐쇄적이고 그로테스크한 방사형 패턴들은 어두웠던 시대의 표현이며, 그 사이를
흔히 볼 수 있는, 지극히 일상적인 모습으로 그려 담아내고 싶었다. 태극기의 태극문양과 건곤감리
식민은 대한민국 깊은 곳에서부터 우리를 병들게 하고 있으며, 그들은 우리와 같은 모습을 한
발에서 출발하여 봄, 여름, 가을 겨울을 상징하는 요소들로 순서대로 나열하였으며, 캐릭터의 머리
뚫고 나오는 강렬한 빛은 광복절 당시의 환희를 표현한다. 패턴의 맥락 속에 위치한 태극은 그런
4괘 그 어느 것도 찾아볼 수 없었던 우리들의 광복절.
채 서서히 잠식해가고 있다. 그렇게 우리는, 우리의 아름다운 것들을 천천히 잃어가고 있는지도
부분에서 우리나라를 상징하는 태극모양이 선명하게 보이면서 퍼레이드의 하이라이트에 이른다.
시련으로부터 벗어나 원래의 태극무늬로 돌아가고자 하는 모습이다.

또한, 곳곳에 배치된 정열 된 패턴과 하얀 원들은 백의 민족인 우리들을 상징하고 있다.
The horrible and miserable days of pre-Independence due to Japan’s military administration, cultural colonization, and its policy to obliterate Korean culture. Our ancestors of the time saved the country, adamantly waving Taegeukgi, despite of the threats of death. However, even after 70 years have passed, colonization of Japan is still sickening us from deep inside of Korea, and they are encroaching in the same appearance as us. Like that, slowly, we may be losing our beautiful things.
For a modern interpretation, the historical moment of the restoration of independence is expressed as a parade – a joyful theme – through a character, which is motivated by the Taegeuk mark of Taegeukgi. Symbolic images of the 4 seasons, one of the characteristics of our country, are expressed, starting from the character’s feet, in order of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, and the Taegeuk mark, which symbolizes our country, is shown clearly at the head part of the character, reaching at the highlight of the parade. Also, the aligned patterns and the white circles together express Korean people – the white-clad race.
Our national liberation day is an extraordinary day. Isn’t it just kind of a public holiday to us which releases us from our ordinary life rather than our national liberation day from Japan? I wanted to portray our that public holiday as just a daily image which you can easily see from every household in a modern apartment. That is our liberation day which you could find neither taegeuk mark nor 4 trigrams called geon gon gam li in korean.

Depiction of the process of ‘regaining the light – the restoration of independence’.The process of lights breaking up and passing through the severe ordeal of the dark periods is expressed. The closed, grotesque, radiating patterns express the dark periods, while the strong light passing through them expresses the delight on Independence Day. The Taegeuk shown in the flow of the patterns describes its attempt to get away from the ordeal and go back to its original form – the Taegeuk mark.

광복이라는 이름처럼 모든것이 회복되어가고 있는데, 하루 빨리 소녀들의 눈물이 마르고 그 가슴에도 빛이 회복되어 따듯하게 봄이 오기를 바라는 마음을 담았습니다.
Everything has been healed like the name restoration of independence implies, I tried to convey that I hope that the girls’ tears will stop in due time with the lights in their hearts being restored as well, and find their spring’s warmth back.

어울리는 한글의 우수성을 강조하고 싶었습니다.
The Taegeuk mark in the center of Taegeukgi represents our nation’s harmony and combination, and Geon-gongam-ri were used as letters to express the word Gwangbok (the restoration of independence) 70 years. The four names among the 8 divination signs of the Book of Changes, Sky, Earth, Water, Fire, are the names of divination signs at the four orners of Teageukgi. I wanted to re-interpret them in a modern, and yet traditional way, while emphasizing the superiority of Korean language that suits well with the international sense of beauty.

나라를 위해 목숨을 바치겠다는 서약으로 손가락을 절단했던 안중근 의사와 결사동지들의 이같은 사건은 독립운동의 상징이다. 그들의 희생이 있었기에 일제로 부터 광복을 이뤄낼 수가 있었다. 그들의 희생을 잊지 말자는 메세지를 최대한 쉽고 간단하게 전달하고자 했다.
The incidence in which Dr. Ahn, Joong-Geun and the members of resistance cut their fingers off is symbolic for the independent movement. The restoration of independence from Japan could be possible because of their sacrifice. I tried to convey a message reminding people not to forget about such sacrifice in the most easy and simple way.

우리의 현재는 과거의 역사와 미래가 함께 어우러져 흘러가는 거대한 흐름의 단면이다. 과거에 우리가 걸어온 길들은 현재의 우리에게
힘든 시기에도 항상 하나로 뭉쳤던 한국인의 긍지를 나타냈다.
끊임없는 질문을 던지고, 그에 대한 우리의 대답이 미래를 결정한다. 한국의 국기라는 매개체를 통해 이러한 역사와 한 국가와의 관계에 대한 조형적이고 모더니즘 적인 해석을 추구 하였다.
The present we live in is the aspect of a colossal stream with the past and the future. The past we walked through asks constant questions and our answers determine the shape of the future. I try to represent the relationship between the history and the nation by designing structural and modernistic version of Korean national flag.

어릴적 초등학교에서 태극기를 그리던 기억을 되새겨 보았다. 각각 국기의 요소들이 상징하는 의미를 배운 기억이 있는데 나이가 들면서

배웠던 것들을 다 잊게 되었다. 이 태극기의 해석은 나의 기억 그리고 가능하다면 다른 사람들의 기억을 돕기 위한 목적으로 디자인 되었다.
재해석한 디자인을 해보았습니다. 동양의 먹을 사용하여, 음과 양이 어울리면서 변화해가는 우주의

This flag comes from my memory of the art class when I was in elementary school. I learnt how to draw and the meaning of each symbol of the flag. However, the memory and knowledge faded as I grew old. This version of Taegukgi is to help my memory and hopefully others. Simple signs that is more direct to the meaning, to me, was used to design this flag. The element of the flag (Harmony of positive and negative, air, fire, earth, water) are simplified in bold lines.
Focusing on the meaning of circulation that four Gwaes, called “Geon-gongam-li”, shown on each corner of “Tae-geuk-gi”(the national flag of Korea) indicates, I tried to reinterpret “Tae-geuk-gi” with a sense of simplicity. Using oriental sumi ink, I represented the universe which is ever-changing through balance of yin and yang as the form of “Tae-geuk” comprised of geometric components such as four Gwaes and a circle.

마음의 거울이라 불리우는 사람의 눈, 더욱 정확하게 사람의 홍채는 다른 생체 특성(지문, 목소리, 얼굴) 보다 서로 같을 확률이 지극이 낮아서, 비밀번호를 대체하는 개인의 ID로 부상하고 있다. 이런 홍채에 재해석된 태극기의 형상을 담아서 태극기를 바라보는 눈, 태극기가 ID로 인식되는 눈을 표현해보고자 했다. 기존의 태극패턴은 서로 감싸안는 두 손으로 대체하여 음양의 조화와 상호연결성을 나타내었고, 사괘는 각각이 의미하는 자연의 요소를 일러스트레이션으로 표현하여 추상적인 기호에 대한 이해를 돕고자 했다.
Eyes are not only the mirror of the soul, but becoming the key to access to a place or other resource. Human eyes, more specifically iris is rising as an alternative ID replacing or complementing traditional password authentication due to the low chance of a false match. I attempted to fuse the interpreted image of Taegukgi(flag of South Korea) with iris and depict the eye looking into the flag as well as the eye identified with Taegukgi pattern. Taeguk symbol in the center is reinterpreted as two embracing hands to emphasize the complementary, interconnected, and interdependent relationship between the two; four black trigrams in the corners are construed as illustrations of classic elements that each trigram represents to enhance the understanding of the abstract symbols.

We regained light. We regained our identity. Incorporating the Chinese character ‘復’ meaning “recovery” with the five colors that are most central to our tradition, this design aims to commemorate the day of freedom and happiness that brought our nation together to be what it is today.
태극기의 의미들을 미니멀하게 재해석 해보았다. 더욱 더 간결하면서도 절제되어 있는 최소한의 도형을 정렬해 표현해 보았다.
I reinterpreted Taegeukgi’s each motifs minimally. It is redesigned by much simple and moderated shapes.
기회가 적다. 철학적인 의미를 가지고 친근함으로 접근한다면 좀 더 많은 사람들에게 그 세계를 알릴 수 있을 것이다.
A profound mind can contain deep meanings in it, but it also refers that there is not much chance to spread it out to public if it is too difficult to understand. If it has philosophical meaning with friendly face, it would be easier to introduce its great message to the world.

뽑았던 이름 모를 잡초. 손이 모래 때문에 뿌얘지도록 돌멩이를 고르고 만지고. 그걸로 풀 내음이 물씬 풍길 때까지 “약초”를 빻던 시절ㅡ. 지극히 개인적으로, 지금은 ‘global citizen’이 된 내가 돌아본 (그래서 더 소중한), 내 모래 묻은 특별했던 학창시절 내음을 담고자 했다. 매일을 태극기로 하루를 시작했던 그 시절, 내 손 끝에 닿았던 것들, 코 끝에 닿았던 것들에 대한 감각과 느낌으로 더듬어 보는 그때. 그 때를 추억하는 마음, 그것은 향수(鄕愁)이다.
미국의 천문학자인 퍼시벌 로웰은 한국을 ‘고요한 아침의 나라’ 라고 표현했다. 아침의 첫 이슬이 오방색으로 물들인 태극기에 고요하게 퍼져나가는 것을 표현하였다.
Percival Lowell who is an astronomer in America called old Korea ‘The Land of The Morning Calm’ This design visualizes spreading the first morning dew calmly on the Korean flag dyed in traditional five colors -yellow, blue, white, red and black.
Every morning. In class. Singing the National Anthem and saluting the flag. Every morning. Kids gathered at the schoolyard. Feet rubbing against the sanded ground. Practicing our routine. Nostalgia.Taegukgi is reminiscent of a scent, unfamiliar yet pleasant, that invokes my old memory. I was born in the States and raised in different countries, and spent solid five years in South Korea attending elementary school. It was the time when I was closest to nature, as all I was doing was touching and smelling it while living in Seoul city. I remember the bright forsythia along the way to the school, the smell of the pouring rain during the monsoon season. After school I went to the playground with my best friend to play with noname weeds as if they were medicinal plants, getting our hands dirty and sandy digging through the bush, picking up stones to grind the ‘medicinal plants’ with. Everyday I started the day saluting to the Taegukgi, until I left Korea and those days remained in my heart as a snapshot, frozen in time. Now I’ve become a global citizen, but that special, very “Korean memory” I have in me is something that I have held dear to my heart and cherished to this day. It is ingrained in me as an essential part of who I am today – like a scent I cannot be rid of.

태극기의 태극문양과 건곤감리가 가지는 가장 기본적인 의미인 ‘음과 양의 조화’ 를 기반으로
태극기에서 나타난 밝음과 순수, 우주의 음양의 조화, 하늘, 땅, 물과 불을 재창조시켰다. 태극문양을 중심으로 한 태극기는 끝없는 창조와
태극기의 4괘와 태극 문양을 그래픽 디자인 으로 재해석. 평면(2차원) 으로 우리에게 생각되는
그 중 하나인 동심결 매듭이라 불리는 매듭이 있는데 이 매듭은 같은 마음이란 뜻을 가졌다. 이 매듭의 뜻처럼, 남 북한도 통일을 염원하는
기존의 네모난 바탕의 태극기가 아닌 둥근 바탕의 태극기로 디자인하였습니다.

I redesigned 태극기 with round background not like original flag. My round flag is based on “Harmony of yin and yang” which is having the most basic meaning of 태극pattern and 건곤감리.
Taegukgi is a symbol of korean’s spirit, culture and history. And it shows the perfect beauty of balance and harmony, sky, sun, moon, and earth. My work represents the eternal glory of Korea and harmony of freedom and justice.

In the past, Korean traditional knots were diversely used in real life, especially used for a part of accessory even for men’s. There are many types of knot and one of knots is called “Dong sim gyeol” knot, which means the same mind. As the meaning of the knot, while incorporating patterns inspired by the knot into my design, I hope that North Korea and South Korea have the same mind, which is a wish for the reunification of Korea.

Taegeukgi, which is the national flag of Korea, has profound meaning for Korean people in terms of a severe ordeal we suffered in the fast as well as national autonomy. This redesigned flag created on the basis of the significance of Korea’s Independence Day is intended to remind of our historical moment by reinterpreting with a modern outlook.
Not long after feeling the joy of independence, Korea confronted another tragedy, which is the national division into North and South. Nevertheless, this piece depicts the short moment of happiness after independence from Japan, when the nation was fully engaged in celebration regardless of North and South, age or gender.

태극기는 간결하고 우리의 문화와 정신과 염원을 잘 담고 있는 완벽한 디자인입니다. 저는 태극기를 현재의 대한민국이 어디에 있는지를 담는 창으로 발전시켜 보았습니다. 조화롭던 태극의 곡선을 평평한 직선으로 바꾸어 한반도의 정치적 상황이 얼마나 양극화가 되어 가고 있으며 또 우리가 검열과 언론의 자유사이에서 얼마나 불안정한지를 표현하였습니다. 태극을 38도로 회전시켜 북한과의 관계에서 지속되고 있는 고통과 늘어나는 모순을 설명해보았습니다. 우리는 지나칠 정도로 남을 의식한 나머지 우리의 개성, 인격과 지혜까지도 바꾸려고 하는 강박관념을 가지고 있습니다. 붉은 색으로 표현한 모서리는 희망과 변하지 않는 한결같음을 상징합니다. 우리 문화와 역사에 대한 우리의 뿌리깊은 자긍심은 그것이 국제무대에서 올려놓아졌을때 드러나고 혹은 위와같이 우리가 우리 스스로를 평가할때도 만나게 됩니다.
Our flag is perfect in its simplicity and its reflection of our culture, soul and aspirations. I evolved our flag to be a window onto where we are today. The harmonious curves of the Taeguk are flattened to show how polarizing our political landscape has become and how we straddle a precarious line between censorship and free-speech. The 38º rotation represents the ongoing struggle and increasing ambivalence we have with the North. We are preoccupied with how we are perceived and have an unhealthy obsession with the scalpel—erasing marks of individuality, personality and wisdom. The red edge symbolizes hope and the constant that will never change—our deep rooted pride for our culture and history that manifests itself when placed on the international stage or, when confronted with a critique of ourselves such as this.

기존 태극기에 담긴 뜻에 기초하여 태극기를 이루는 각각의 상징과 의미들이 더욱 부드럽게 조화를
태극 문양은 오래된 역사를 갖고 있으며, 기원후 7세기의 한반도 유물에서 처음 나타난다.
태극기 디자인의 기본 요소를 이용하여 남 녀 노 소 를 표현했다. 우리 모두를 상징한다.
우리 선조들의 염원을 표현해보았습니다.

Each colors and shapes of Taegeukgi connotes various motifs such as hope for future. I designed a series of Taegeuk shapes to represent future of Korea.

The Taegeuk symbol has a long history, appearing first time in the 7th century in Korean peninsula. Although it connotes multiple motifs, I focused in my artwork on one significant meaning which points to ‘the root of all things in their creation.’ In this regard I described that all living creatures move dynamically, pursuing to express my desire for soundness and prosperity of Korea.

전 세계 국기, 약 203여점, 중 그 나라 고유의 언어로 된 문구를 국기의 주된 객체로 쓰고 있는 국기는 현존하지 않는다. 문구가 쓰여있는 국기 약 16점 중 대다수는 식민문화의 배경이나 종교적 배경으로 되물림 받은 언어를 사용하고 있으며, 디자인 면에 있어서는 작은 디테일로 일러스트레이션과 함께 어우러지도록 배치되어있는 편이다. 이러한 시점에 한국의 고유문자 한글은 그런 면에서 세계적으로 문화적 강점으로 작용해 나라를 대표하는 얼굴이 될 기회를 포착해보기로 했다. 기존의 두 버전의 8괘 태극도형기와 4괘 태극기의 엘레멘트를 최대한 활용해 ‘대한민국’이라는 문구의 한글이 주가 되는 국기로 재해석해보았다. 태극문양의 경우에도 중국과 공유하는 동양철학을 바탕으로한 기존의 이태극이 아닌, 민족 고유의 삼태극을 다시 사용함으로서 대한민국만의 특별한 국기를 재탄생시켰다. (가갸는 ‘한글’이 가갸로 시작되는 데에서 유래된 순우리말이다.)
IOut of about 203 national flags in the world, and yet, there’s none of them having letters native to a single country in their flags. Flags containing texts as a design elements are mostly using the languages they adapted from the colonial history or religious background, and yet not playing a centric role in the design than just a small additional object of the illustrations. Therefore, this status of flags in the world gives Korea a great opportunity to utilize the strongest cultural resource, Hangeul (Korean national letters), to take over the face of the nation in the national flag. The redesigned work from Hanso Lee is reinterpreting each elements from existing two versions of Korean national flags to create the letter “Republic of Korea” in Korean as the main graphic element. (‘Ga-gya’ represents ‘Korean Alphabet(Hangeul)’ in pure Korean words)

독립운동 당시, 백범 김구선생님은 “조국이 없으면 민족도 없다”고 말씀하셨다. 가장 ‘나’ 다운 태극기는 어떻게 생겼을까? 하고 생각하던 중, 세계 어디에 있든 내 정체성은 우리나라의 문화에서 비롯된다 믿어 내가 느끼는 한국, 생각하는 한국을 한데 모아 태극기를 새롭게 표현하였다.
Kim Gu, one of the leading figures of the Korean Independence movement, once said, “There is no people if there’s no country”. I asked myself, what would Taeguekgi (National Flag) look like if it were to represent me?. I believe that no matter where I’m in the world, the basis of my identity originates from Korean culture. So I brought together my feelings and thoughts about Korea and redesigned our national flag.

Visualizing the sounds of victory. On August 15, 1945, Korea was filled with shouting for independence. The poster visualizes people’s voice longed for a light and freedom from suppression.

우리민족 서로가 믿고, 의지하고, 나라의 정체성을 찾기 위해 싸우지 않았다면 독립이라는 상황도 없었을것이다. 바로
원안에 들어 있는 산의 모양은 불안정한 조화를 의미한다. 완벽하지 않은 세상 속에 음양의 조화는 서로 단단하게 엮여
그 숭고한 순간들을 실현 시켜줄수 있던 힘은 바로 정서적, 육제적 연결이다. 바로 맺음 이라는 서로의 믿음을 통하여
공존하고 있다. 때문에 나는 음양의 원을 재구성하여 조금 더 진실된 모습의 세상을 구현하고 싶었다.
광복이라는 국가의 정체성을 찾는 모습을, 끈 매듭의 단단한 연결 이미지를 이용, 태극기의 디자인에 반영하였고, 광복 70 주년의 의미와, 현재의 대한민국의 있기까지의 조상들의 노력의 씨앗점을 표현하고자 한다.
In the past, If Koreans could not believe and depend on each other for independence from Japan, this meaningful situation would not succeed in our history. In this respect, I consider that most significant element is emotional and physical connections of people. I inspired the knot of line which can represent connection meaning. I try to apply this principle to Taegeukgi in order to remind Korean identity, and I would like to represent Korean people’s efforts for independence through this design.
The mountains in the circle represent the unstableness of harmony. In an imperfect society Ying and Yang coexist in a rocky relationship. Being so I chose to recreate the Ying Yang circle in a more truthful representation of society.

한국 전통 붓의 필력을 활용하여 세계로 미래로 웅비하는 한류의 모습을 표현하였다. 태극은 잠재되어 있는 우리의 에너지의 모습이며 밖으로 향하는 4괘의 힘찬 모습은 세계와 미래로 전진하는 모습이고 바탕의 우리 자산 한글의 자음 모음은 서로 다른 국민들의 우수성, 창의성, 개성이 함께 숲을 이루어 변화와 조화로 아우르는 모습으로 글자가 겹쳐도 서로를 다치거나 간섭치 아니하게 표현함으로서 이상적인 사회 건설을 지향하고 있음을 의미하고 있다.
Using Korea’s traditional brush, it illustrates the Korean wave in the future. The Taegeuk figure implies our energy. The four trigrams express the development of Korea. The characters of Hangeul form in forest, emphasizing excellence, creativity, and uniqueness. All illustration means ideal society that we dream.

‘봉황은 새 중의 으뜸으로, 동방 군자의 나라에서 나왔다. 이 새가 한 번 나타나면 천하가 태평하게 된다’고 하였습니다. 태평한 대한민국을 꿈꾸며 봉황을 태극기로 이미지화했습니다.
