Prague, CzechRepulic

• The Charles Bridge is an iconic bridge crossing the Vltava River. It is the second oldest bridge in the Czech Republic. King Charles IV had it constructed in 1357 and finally completed in 1402.

• The Prague Castle was erected in the 9th century and was the residency for kings and presidents up until this day. It is on historic land that is apart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crown jewels, Christian artifacts, historical documents and more reside in this palatial castle.

• The Prague Zoolological Garden is one of the most prestigious zoos in the world. Housing over 5,000 animals and over 600 species, it is expansive with 150 exhibits. It was founded in 1931 and is the second most visited tourist attraction in the Czech Republic, after the Prague Castle. The highlight of the zoo is the Elephant Valley, hosting a herd of Asian Elephants.

• The Old Town Square (Staromestske namesti) is one of the most historically significant squares in Prague, housing the baroque Church of St. Nicholas, the Rococo Kinsky Palace, and the Gothic House at the Stone Bell. Constructed in the 12th century, it has been a prime marketplace location for European trade routes.

• The Old Town Hall with the astronomical clock, also known as the Orloj, is located within the vicinity of the Old Town Square. Dating from the 12th century, it boasts a Gothic tower and bay chapel, but the highlight is the astronomical clock that hosts the twelve disciples every hour from 9 am to 11 pm.

Top Christmas Markets in Europe

• Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market: Berlin, Germany. Located in the historic market of Berlin, get the opportunity to treat yourself to Bavarian delicacies and purchase hand crafted items, such as blown glass and wood carvings.

• La Defense Marche de Noel: Paris, France. Hosted under the Grande Arche de la Defense, there are over 300 vendors selling assorted crafts and accompanied by Christmas music. Indulge yourself with mulled wine and chocolate.

• Christmas Markets at Old Town and Wenceslas Square in Prague, Czech Republic. This is the traditional Christmas aesthetics we’re going for: gothic architecture and steaming hot, mulled wine. Delight in having barbequed pork or trdelnik, which is a pastry rolled in cinnamon and sugar and grilled.

• Tallinn Christmas Market, Estonia. Tallinn boasts displaying the first Christmas tree in Europe, dating back to 1441. Decked in splendor, it sits prominently amongst the booths and vendors. Don’t leave without seeing Santa come through on a sleigh pulled by reindeer!

PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS!

In November, the OFP held its Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest. Any Grove City College student who had studied or spent time abroad during the 2021-2022 academic year or summer 2022 were asked to submit their best photo from their time abroad. Many submissions were received from students that had spent a whole semester or summer abroad, participated in an ICO trip, or went on a faculty-led travel intersession.

These photos were sent via survey across the campus to let the student body vote for their favorite submissions. Without further ado, we present the winners of the OGP's Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest!

INTERLAKEN, SWITZERLAND

Semester Abroad, Spring 2022

I took this picture on a rainy day in Interlaken, Switzerland. I had set out from my hostel on a grand adventure, with the goal of summitting Mt. Augstmatthorn. The 17-mile climb to the snow-covered peak would give me a view of the entire Swiss Alps. On my way to the trailhead, I spotted this wisteria-bestrewed house with the base of the mountain I was about to climb in the background. - Logan

VICTORIA KIM

HALLSTATT, AUSTRIA

Semester Abroad, Fall 2022

I submitted a picture of the town of Hallstatt, Austria. I went in early October 2022 while I was visiting Salzburg for the weekend. The picture doesn’t even capture how beautiful the fall foliage was. This lakeside town will be one of the fondest places I visited during my semester abroad because of how relaxing it was to just walk around and enjoy the scenic view. -Victoria

AGRA, INDIA LUCY MARTIN

Global Outreach Program, Summer 2022

This photo was taken at Agra Fort in Agra, India which looks out on the Taj Mahal. Pictured are two women in traditional dress resting below a small part of the stunning marble architecture of the fort, built in the late 1500s. It is a popular destination for travelers from all over India and the rest of the world.- Lucy

Honorable Mention

CAITLIN HARVEY

ST. PETERS BASILICA, VATICAN CITY

ACI Archeology Trip, May-June 2022

In my travels with the ACI program in Italy and Greece we visited Rome several times. On entering St. Peter's Basilica, I was blown away by its magnificence. I wasn't the only one. An older lady limped her way to the very back center and stood absolutely still for what felt like ages. She was taking it all in: Bernini's Altar, the Pieta, the 450-foot ceilings, the detailed mosaics, and gold accents.- Caitlin

FLORENCE, ITALY AMBRIA GOOD

Semester Abroad, Fall 2021

During the last week of my semester abroad, my roommate and I climbed the Torre di Arnolfo. After reaching the top, we were able to overlook the city we had called home the past three months. It was surreal being able to stand up there with her and point out different places we had been, tracing the streets back to our apartment. I passed the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore every day on my way to class and it greeted me every time I returned to Florence after my weekend travels. It signified home.- Ambria

HANNAH EVANS

Ceský Krumlov, Czech Republic

Faculty-Led Travel Course, May 2022

This picture was taken on the Prague faculty lead trip during our weekend excursion to the quaint historic town of Český Krumlov, Czech Republic. We were given a few hours of free time, so my friend and I went exploring and found this beautiful, somewhat hidden, garden area with a view overlooking the town. In the photo you can see some of the town’s historic buildings such as the Český Krumlov Castle Tower and St. Jost Church along with some of the garden’s beautiful greenery in the foreground.- Hannah

FLORENCE, ITALY LOGAN FUSS

Semester Abroad, Spring 2022

The photo was taken in my first week in Florence and was the first time I ventured out to the Arno river. I was in awe of just how beautiful Florence and Italy was. I remember stopping and staring for a while. During my time in Florence, I crossed this bridge many times and I always loved the view of Ponte Vecchio and how beautiful the river looked day or night. When I took this photo, I remember I was very apprehensive about my study abroad future; now when I see this picture I can think back and see how far I’ve come and how much I’ve grown as a person.-Logan
