hat a first month of 2017 it has been!

We started off the year with nearly 3,000 people at our New Year’s at Noon event - more than 6 TIMES the attendance of last year’s! We know many of you endured long lines, crowded spaces and some frustration, but we are happy you came out and supported Children’s Trust and celebrated with us! It was an amazing event that blew away all expectations. We have some big things planned this year, so stay tuned! Our next event is on February 11th, the first ever Virginia Family Expo! You may be reading this magazine while you are at the event - in that case - welcome! We are excited to be bringing this great free resource to the community and we hope you can attend. If you missed it, do not worry, we will be bringing it back again! Unfortunately, one event that is not coming back is the Fit Family Challenge. This regional event was cancelled this year by the organizers (Charlotte Parent) and the sponsors (CocaCola). We are hoping it comes back in 2018! Last but not least, you may have heard about a little thing called the Roanoke Harry Potter Festival! Well, we are super excited to be working alongside several great organizations to bring the Wizarding World to the Valley. Please follow us on Facebook for up to the minute info on the festival. This is sure to be one of the most magical events this summer. We hope you enjoy this issue and we hope to see you at the Virginia Family Expo! Stop by our booth and say “Hi” and let us know what you think!

Questions

with Ava Rosa

First Year in Review It’s coming up on the one year anniversary of when we started Three Questions with Ava Rosa. In celebration, I wanted to share some great things I learned in my first 15 shows- which are all available at www.AR3Q.com, Youtube, and Facebook.

When I first considered being a journalist, it was mostly because I hadn’t ever seen a kid like me ask real questions like the best journalists do. There were kids on the news sometimes, maybe doing the weather or asking easy questions, but nobody I had ever seen was doing it the way I wanted to do it. I have since had the amazing opportunity to meet some of the great leaders of Roanoke Valley and ask them real questions- of course just threebut, in those 45 questions or so, I have learned so much. Here’s what I learned this year on Three Questions with Ava Rosa. In my first interview ever, with the now Vice-Mayor of Roanoke, Anita Price, I learned that grown-ups will give kids a chance, if kids just ask. I learned that democracy requires participation and way too many people do not participate. The most important thing I learned from Vice Mayor Price though, is that politics can be based on kindness and love. In my second show with Chris Hurst at WDBJ, I learned that good people want to be good mentors. I learned never to let anyone else take your microphone and that television news has a whole lot more people behind the scenes making it happen than you see on the

6

Growing Up • February 2017

screen. I also learned that tragedy can reveal the true heart of people and make their mission in life that much more important because they want to honor the memory of the people they loved and lost.

and it is important to remember the hard times to try and avoid them in the present and future. I also learned that nice people will stick up for a kid when they think she might not get to ask her question.

When I got to interview Sara Gregory at the Roanoke Times, I learned how important a local newspaper can be and is for a community. I learned that what we see in the paper requires smart people to decide what is important and then go find out as much as they can about it. I learned that the newspaper industry is vital in holding leaders accountable and is doing everything it can to survive changes in technology and the way people get their news.

When I interviewed the CEO of the United Way of Roanoke Valley, Afira DeVries, I got to learn about what it means to actively care about other people in an organized way. I learned that there are thousands of people who each give what they can to help their neighbors in need. I learned that my mom is kind of awesome, but I already knew that.

Meeting Miss Roanoke Valley, Andolyn Medina, was amazing. She taught me that someone can be bright, beautiful, and devote their life to the service of others, even as a kid. She taught me that there is a lot someone who cares can do to help others in whatever free time they have. She taught me that inner beauty is earned. Virginia State Delegate Sam Rasoul taught me that the Constitution protects equality, but that it takes elected representatives who care about all people, to make sure that equality is promoted. I also learned that people of different backgrounds can be leaders and represent their faith and nationalities in a way that teaches others to be less fearful and more kind. When I got a chance to ask a question with George Takei when he was visiting Roanoke, he taught me that history has not always been pleasant or fair

Talking with Mayor David Bowers on his last day in office, I learned that Roanoke has a great opportunity to grow and be an even better place to live. Mayor Bowers taught me that even well meaning people make mistakes and say things they wish they hadn’t, but that the most important thing is to be willing to apologize and be able to be forgiven, when you do. I discovered the Mayor’s chair is pretty comfy, too. When I got to cover the Miss Virginia 2016 Pageant, I was amazed at just how talented AND smart these beautiful women are. I learned that beauty is much more than someone’s outer appearance and that the Miss America pageant actually is a very difficult competition, that is about a lot more than looks. I learned that it is heart-breaking when someone you know doesn’t come home with the crown. Talking with Salem Red Sox President and General Manager, Ryan Shelton, I learned how great it is that we

have a local baseball team to enjoy. Through good times and bad, the tradition of baseball and the chance to spend quality time with family at the ballpark is an amazing part of Roanoke Valley culture. My sister and I also learned that singing the national anthem before a game is terrifying and awesome at the same time! At the Rolling of the Bulls to benefit the Children’s Trust, I discovered that you mess with a bull and you might get the horns. I really learned that there are great people who want to use what they do to help raise money and awareness for others, while having a lot of fun. I also learned that Grandin Road is long when it’s 90 degrees and you are being chased by angry skating bulls, while holding a go pro the whole time. Pearl Fu taught me and so many others how important it is, not just to accept each other’s differences, but to celebrate them. I learned that a passionate person like Pearl Fu can help change a culture and be a representative of beauty and diversity in all their colors.

When I hosted the RYSE Roanoke United Way Talent Show, I learned how important it is to recognize talent in a community and try to help people make the most of each other’s ability. I learned that I am grateful to know where I sleep every night and that there are over 500 children in our community who do not, and should, and can, and must soon. Meeting Brenda Hale, the President of the NAACP of Roanoke, I was able to understand how the history of open racism in America was really not that long ago. I discovered that people who are over 60 years old today, lived during a time when things were not equal and they were forced to live separately and go to different schools and were treated differently because of how they looked. I learned that there is a lot of work still to do to make sure that people of all races have the same opportunity as everyone else to be safe and successful. In my last report of the year, I did a live show on stage at a Children’s Trust event honoring recently retired Judge Phillip Trompeter. I learned that many kids around us are growing up

in danger and in fear. I learned that in times of crisis, sometimes people from the community need to step in when parents cannot or will not. I learned that there are extraordinary people who devote their lives to other people’s children and make a huge difference with their life’s work. This last year has been an unbelievable time in my life. When I started this idea, I never would have imagined that I would meet so many great people and learn so many important lessons. The biggest lesson I learned this year has been from you, the people who have shared this journey with me and watched my reports. You have liked and shared. Commented and tweeted. You have made this now 11 year old reporter feel like what I am doing matters and that I can make a difference if I work hard and try my best- and that has been the best lesson of all, this year. I really appreciate your support. It’s going to be another great year! For Three Questions with Ava Rosa and Growing Up in the Valley, thank you for reading, see you next time.

Hottest Names

in 2016

Lucas was #53 in 2007.

Parents in 2016 love to be creative when it comes to naming their newest bundles of joy. Gone are the days of having 4-6 Johns, Marys and Jennifers in a class; they’ve been replaced by rare classic names like Sebastian and Evelyn and pop-culture inspired names like Lucas and Rey. Soon-to-be parents have drawn inspiration from the 1920s and glamorous hollywood with names such as Heath, Monroe, Della and Carmen. Classic sounding names like Emma, Liam and Noah still reign supreme according to the US social Security website, but newcomers Hunter, Stella and Nora are creeping up in popularity. Surprisingly, former name chart toppers Michael and Mary aren’t anywhere to be seen in the top 10.

Modern parents are also paying close attention to how their children’s names sound together. (Online it is known as “sib sets”) The forums are packed with requests for name suggestions for their second or third child that “match” their firstborn’s name. The matching can come in many ways, in the syllable count, spelling styles, origins and just overall “feel” of the names.

Homemade Pretzels Supplies:

1 1/2 cups warm water 1 tablespoon sugar 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 package active dry yeast 22 ounces all-purpose flour, approximately 4 1/2 cups 2 ounces unsalted butter, melted Vegetable oil 10 cups water 2/3 cup baking soda 1 large egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon water

Instructions Optional: Instead of salt cover your pretzels with colored sugar or candy melts to make great Valentine’s Day Treats.

Mix the warm water, sugar and kosher salt in the bowl of a stand mixer and sprinkle the yeast on top. Allow to sit for 5 minutes. Add the flour and butter and mix on low speed until well combined. Knead until the dough is smooth and pulls away from the side of the bowl, approximately 4 to 5 minutes. Remove the dough from the bowl, clean the bowl and then oil it well with vegetable oil.

Return the dough to the bowl, cover with plastic wrap and sit in a warm place until the dough has doubled in size, about 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Line 2 half-sheet pans with parchment paper and lightly brush with the vegetable oil. Set aside. Bring the 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a rolling boil in an large pot. In the meantime, turn the dough out onto a slightly oiled work surface and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll and shape pretzels into desire shape (We used hearts for Valentine’s Day!) Gently place the pretzels into the boiling water one at a time for 30 seconds. Remove them from the water using a large flat spatula. Return to the half sheet pan, brush the top of each pretzel with the beaten egg yolk and water mixture and sprinkle with salt. Bake until dark golden brown in color, about 12-14 minutes. Cool on rack for at least 5 minutes before serving.

The True Cost of

Raising a Baby By Sarah Gobble

According to a 2010 USDA report, the average family will spend roughly $12,000 on child-related expenses in their baby’s first year of life.

Beneath the gurgles, smiles, excitement of daily discoveries, and remarkable joy that radiates from a baby, lies an unavoidable truth: parenthood is expensive. The average American parent spends 66 dollars a month on disposable diapers, 150 dollars on baby formula, and 286 dollars on childcare, in addition to medical expenses, clothing, and the cost of additional supplies. Few will argue that having a child is a costly investment. Though the rewards are priceless, many parents must compromise and sacrifice to provide for their growing families. Though there

16

Growing Up • February 2017

is no handbook to explain how to effortlessly and flawlessly raise children with little cost and minimal struggles, parents are beginning to learn and share their successes in simplifying the costs of parenthood. With the help of modern innovations, many parents are now able to shift their focus from balancing their budget to balancing their lives with their new little one. For the Garst family of Blacksburg, a simple switch has made a difference, not only in their budget, but also in the health of their son Jackson. A biology teacher at Salem High School, Jamie Garst has always been health conscious, fascinated by nutrition and physiology. After the birth of his son, being in tune to what he was feeding his child became a priority for Jamie and his wife Sarah. By using a blender specialized for babies, Jamie was able to blend his knowledge of biology with his son’s meals, literally, and swapped jarred baby food for a natural, healthier alternative. When the Garsts began to transition Jackson from a milk diet to solid food, they purchased the Baby Bullet and began to blend their own

baby food. “We thought fresher ingredients were better,” Sarah said. “It was experimental, but [Jackson] seemed to do well with it.” Using recipes from the Baby Bullet book and wholesomebabyfood.com, the Garsts saved money by reducing the amount of costly processed baby food they needed to purchase. Best of all, they were able to know exactly what was going into their son’s growing body. “Some things were more difficult to blend than others. I would cook a carrot and throw it in with some water and blend it,” Jamie said. “The carrots were a bit difficult. Bananas were definitely the easiest to blend,” Sarah added.

them until they don’t fit anymore, then we put them back into the tub and pass them to someone else,” Jamie said. “It saves us a ton of money.”

paint, the Newtons were able to add a sophisticated touch to their daughter’s nursery without shelling out the extra cash. “I definitely recommend Pinterest if you are looking for ways to save money on your baby.”

When it comes to other accessories and baby supplies, the Garsts use social networking to their advantage. “I am a part of a Facebook group called ‘Moms’,” Sarah said. “It is like a support system for moms. For example, I could post that I need a stroller for an upcoming trip, and someone who has one could loan me one. Friendships with other parents are so important.” In addition to networking with other parents, Sarah offers new parents who are trying to save money a piece of advice, one that she plans on keeping in mind as she prepares for her second child: “An infant’s needs aren’t that great. It’s better to be more minimalistic when it comes to toys and accessories, not feeling like they need everything.”

Having a new a baby can certainly bring financial stress along with the sleepless nights and dirty diapers. With some creativity and a willingness to reach out to other parents, the financial burdens can be significantly lessened. Whether it is borrowing a stroller instead of buying one that will collect dust in the garage, or getting crafty to save a few bucks, parenthood and frugality can coexist. Thanks to social networking and modern innovations, parents can make smart swaps that can benefit both parent and baby. Most parents will agree that a new child changes your world forever, but the impact on the family budget doesn’t have to be as great.

Breastfeeding Worries How do you know if you’re making enough milk for your newborn?

As a new mother you may have a pretty big concern:

Am I making enough milk for my baby?

marble has grown to the size of an egg, about 80ml. Smaller, frequent feedings can actually boost your supply more than longer, further feedings. A little bit of baby weight loss after birth is normal too, so don’t worry if the baby’s birth weight is higher than when you go home from the hospital. Experts say that most newborns regain that weight in abou 2 weeks, and then gain about half an ounce a day for the first four weeks.

Breastfeeding has had a resurgence of popularity in the recent generation; thanks to new awareness programs through groups such as WIC and the American Pediatric Association. But in the throes of new motherhood, it can be hard to be confident that you are supplying enough to your little one. It’s important to remember the basics of breastfeeding, even when dealing with issues such as tongue ties or infections. Your baby should be having 6-8 wet diapers a day, and eating 8-14 times a day in the early weeks. Your pediatrician will check your baby’s weight at their well check up appointments to make absolutely sure that your child is growing properly. Make sure you don’t stop taking care of yourself while preoccupied with your baby. Drink plenty of water, rest often and try to eat healthy choices.

Did You Know?

Unfortunately, breasts come in all shapes, sizes and volumes. Most mothers will find that their baby will settle into a routine, with similar length feedings daily. Mothers whose brest hold more milk at one time may find that their baby can feed for 30 minutes or more, while smaller storage capcity mothers may have more frequent feedings.

Two Roanoke mothers (and doctors!) created Milkin’ Cookies to help mothers boost their milk supply in a delicious and healthy way.

Your newborn bundle of joy’s stomach is actually a lot smaller than most people realize. At birth it’s just a bit bigger than a marble, so don’t panic if your milk takes a few days to come in and be plentiful. The thick colustrum is exactly what nature designed for your baby. A few weeks later, that

Pumping or hand expressing can help allievate concerns about your supply, as sometimes seeing is believing. As your baby grows, so will your confidence in breastfeeding. If your doctor or a lactation consultant do find a reason for concernthere are some options to help boost your supply. You can pump after feedings, have more skin-to-skin time with your baby, take herbal supplements such as fenugreek, alfalfa, or goat’s rue, or eat lactation cookies.

Children are eager, spontaneous learners, curious about the world around them. The primary goal of a Montessori education is to help every child reach their full potential in all areas of life.

1.We’re Catholic, but you don’t have to be Catholic. We reinforce your values: “blending learning with faith and faith with daily life.” 2

Research shows that children learn best in an environment that encourages them to explore, create, and discover without fear of making mistakes, or being teased. In a classroom at Salem Montessori School, children are encouraged to ask questions, develop ideas, and learn at their own pace. Learning is active and fun!

2. No SOLs! We focus on individual achievement, not standardized tests.

Montessori educated children become self-confident young people, who face future challenges with optimism and who enjoy a lifetime love of learning!

3.We are affordable. A new source of aid can cut your tuition in half!
