Family Joy This year, one of my favorite quotes seemed to work like magic, “Just give me one more sunny weekend!” We were blessed with abundant sunshine and a dry fall that allowed plenty of time for autumn planting and cleanup. However, in my opinion, one of the best qualities about the Pacific Northwest is its well-defined seasons. It was refreshing when the winter cool down finally set in, and the rains started to rejuvenate the landscape once again. With the turning of the weather into cooler days and nights, my containers are in need of a little TLC. The flowers that looked good in early fall now need to be replaced with a little winter color and charisma. In our article, “Changing with the Seasons,” Josh Clarke (our Container Specialist and Sherwood Assistant Store Manager) shares some great ways to freshen up your fall containers and get them holiday ready. I am always looking for plants that stand out amongst all the others! This is especially true in the winter when there are slimmer pickings for sensational plants. While most winter plants begin to hibernate in the cooler weather, Hellebores stand out by bringing color and character to an otherwise sleepy winter landscape. For more information on planting these winter beauties and the most popular varieties, turn to page 11. The older I get, the more I realize that the little things really are the big things and they bring great joy. In this issue of Bloom, rediscover Ice Apples and what makes this delectable apple such an extraordinary treat. Its sweet crispness will become one of your favorite holiday indulgences, and you can drop the guilt because they are pure fruit (much healthier than most holiday treats)! I love to watch the poinsettias turn color in the greenhouses as we round the corner towards Thanksgiving and head strong into the holiday season. There are so many amazing colors and, of course, the traditional favorites, red and white. Poinsettias add beauty to your home and holiday decorating, but they can add even more holiday cheer when combined with the foliage and texture of houseplants. get inspired with some classic and contemporary houseplant and poinsettia pairings put together by our houseplant buyer, Judy Alleruzzo. Christmastime is all about togetherness and celebrating a season of thankfulness! Special memories are one of the best gifts that you can give or receive, and they last a lifetime. We invite you to join us at our 14th Annual “Evening of Lights.” Get into the holiday spirit while previewing our large selection of Al’s specially grown poinsettias and shop by tree-light through all of our Christmas decorations and gifts. For a sneak peek at just a few of the many fabulous Christmas gifts and decorations that our gift buyer, Candace Moffatt, has in store for you, turn to pages 14-19. Every season is a blessing, but I am especially looking forward to spending time with my family this holiday season. Just as the seasons change, these grandkids of mine just keep on growing up, and it reminds me to be present and just enjoy today. As we head into the holidays, I hope that you are able to enjoy the simple pleasures that make life special. Visit our stores this holiday season for inspiration, decorations and to build your family traditions. Thank you for allowing us to serve your gardening needs and fuel your passion for plants for more than 65 years! We hope to continue to add a little color to your life in 2015! Merry Christmas and God Bless!

Al's Son & 2nd Generation Owner

The Apple of My Eye Al's ice apples Legendary Ice Apples, exclusively at Al’s Garden Centers, are the flavor of the holiday season with their sweet, juicy crispness. Al’s owner, Jack Bigej, got his first taste of these delicious apples over ten years ago when Wenatchee Valley apple growers, Doug and Jan Merriman, brought a bag along as a holiday thank you for his business. Jack, being a selfproclaimed “fruit monger” and a staple in the fruit business for many years, knew a good apple when he tasted it and vowed to bring this gift of nature to his own customers. Since the discovery of Ice Apples, customers have been known to clamor for a bag of this specialty fruit. Like clockwork, once the weather cools, customers begin calling Al’s to ask when they will arrive. Unfortunately, we don’t always have a firm answer, as harvest time is dependent on weather conditions up in the Wenatchee Valley. An Ice Apple must be left on the tree until after the first frost for its inside (the water core) to crystallize. The “crystallized sugar” is what turns a standard Fuji into the sweetest, most delicious apple you’ve ever tasted! If they are so superior, you may wonder why all apple growers don’t market these scrumptious treats across the country. Ice Apples require patience to grow and more care than most large supermarkets are willing to commit to one variety of apple. By letting them hang on the trees longer, the apples ripen more extensively, raising the sugar content and increasing the flavor. While this process certainly makes for a delicious apple, it also makes them more sensitive to handle. Rather than using the harsh, automated polishing machines, Ice Apples are carefully handpolished to perfection. This process is involved, but as the saying goes, “Good things come to those who wait!” You will appreciate the effort put into growing this refreshing fruit when you taste the extraordinary flavor and sweetness that is unmatched by any other variety. If you haven’t experienced the flavor of an Ice Apple, we encourage you to stop by and indulge in this healthy, seasonal treat. We promise you won’t be disappointed and guarantee you will be back for more!

Changing with the Seasons Al’s Container Expert Josh Clarke shares his tips for creating stunning cool-weather displays.

In the Pacific Northwest, the late fall weather can be dreary and we often need something bright and cheery to balance the cloudy grey skies. Unique potted containers can be just the prescription you need to “chase the greys away.” To get started, choose plants and objects in the colors of fall -- reds, oranges, purples and deep yellows. While color is important, you also want to consider structure and texture. Remember to combine contrasting foliage shapes, like spiky grasses with round leaves as well as a selection of color. One of my favorite plants for fall containers is Nandina. It is colorful, has great height, and is nice and airy. People may be afraid of using Nandina because it looks similar to bamboo (its common name is Heavenly Bamboo)

Nandina ‘Moyer’s Red’

but it’s actually not. Nandina is wellbehaved and stays where it’s planted. I used Nandina ‘Moyer’s Red’ in this arrangement, a variety that gets sprays of white flowers in the fall that turn into red berries in the winter. Loropetalum, or Fringe Flower, is another one of my fall favorites. I’ve used ‘Chang Nian Hong’ here. Its round, deep burgundy leaves are a nice contrast to some of the spiky, bladed plants. Ornamental grasses are also an excellent choice for fall. They remind me of the harvest. Some have great seed pods and most blow beautifully in the fall winds.

Loropetalum ‘Chang Nian Hong’

Orange Sedge

Orange Sedge, or Carex testacea, worked perfectly in the pictured arrangement. Trailers, or plants that drape over the edge of the container make a nice transition from the pot to the plants. In fall, there are plenty of choices; Periwinkle vinca minor ‘Bowles’ and ‘Illumination’vinca minor are used in my creation. Ajuga and wire vine are also some of my fall trailing favorites. Don't forget to have fun by using some autumn. Pumpkins, gourds, and wheat stalks all add great color and tie your fall theme together.

Periwinkle vinca minor ‘Bowles’

1

Just as the seasons change, so must our containers. Here are four easy steps to change a fall arrangement into a festive masterpiece. I call this “Vintage Glamour.” It was created using evergreen conifers and perennials, burlap, antique colors and, of course, a touch of glitter. Step #1 Remove Fall Accents Take out anything that reminds you of fall. Out go the pumpkins, gourds, and chrysanthemums to make room for some winter foliage.

Step #2 Add Evergreen Foliage I added a ‘Hino Crimson’ Azalea and a cabbage. Yes, cabbage really is a great addition with its vibrant color and textured leaves that last well through the winter. I also added a couple small gaultheria plants. They add a shot of bright red berries and both the leaves and the berries smell like wintergreen.

Also in the fall container (left): Chrysanthemum ‘Durango Combo’ Gracilis Aurea pygmaea false cypress

2

Step #3 Add Evergreen Boughs But, before you add them, give them a fresh cut, at an angle and strip the needles off the bottom 6 inches. I added Noble fir boughs, but you can use any evergreens you like. The boughs fill in any “holes” in the container and last for months.

Step #4 Add Glamour

3

Using odd numbers, I added picks of glittery-gold ferns, brass colored blooms, and antique looking sleigh bells. My burlap ribbon looked nice, but better once sprayed with glue and sprinkled with gold glitter. Once you have all the elements in the container, don’t be afraid to move things around a bit so everything looks balanced and beautiful!

Hellebores Winter Bloomers

By Judy Alleruzzo, Al’s Perennials Expert

Gardeners in the Pacific Northwest are fortunate to enjoy the beautiful blooms of select perennials and shrubs, even in the dead of winter. While others in colder regions of the country have to wait for the snow to melt before they are graced with flourishing blooms, we are able to witness the early emblem of spring long before the weather starts to warm. My favorite winter bloomer is Hellebore. Hellebores are very hardy perennials, with the ability to withstand temperatures down to -30F. This winter gem, when planted in your garden or containers, begins to bloom in late December when most other flowering plants start to hibernate. The tenacious flowers on this evergreen perennial don’t stop there, but rather keep on blooming until April, giving months of color when little else is flowering.

C. D.

To enjoy the winter blooms, plant Hellebores in an area where you can view them from inside your home or E. along a path or walkway that you use in the winter. On our gray, rainy days, their bright flowers are certain to lift your spirits. We grow a wide variety of Hellebores to choose from. With single or double blooms and an amazing color range, the options are endless. When planting, it is best to choose an afternoon shady spot with soil that drains well. They are also great companions with Coral Bells, pansies and ornamental grasses.

Grilling Your Holiday Turkey

By Aaron Rivera, Al’s Expert

Today, there are many ways to make “the best turkey”- brining, deep frying, smoking & roasting, just to name a few. My favorite is a combination using the brining process and smoking on The Big Green Egg, available at Al’s Garden Center in Sherwood. I think once you try this recipe, you’ll agree that no other way is better! Ingredients for the brine: 1 ½ 1 3 1 2 6 1

gallon water (16 cups) cup firmly packed brown sugar rind of navel orange large sprigs fresh rosemary cup kosher salt onions, quartered cloves garlic, each clove cut in half thawed turkey (12-lb) (You can use any size, just adjust your cooking time.)

1. Pour the water into a large bowl and add the brown sugar, orange rind, rosemary, salt, quartered onions and garlic. Stir these ingredients together until the sugar and salt are totally dissolved. 2. Prepare the turkey by removing the giblets from inside and reserve them for another use. Rinse the turkey well. 3. Place the turkey in a large (2 1/2 gallon (or larger) resealable plastic bag or any container that is large enough to hold the turkey and brine mixture. 4. Pour the brine over the turkey ensuring that it is completely covered. Refrigerate for 12 hours (overnight, the day before you plan on cooking the turkey).

Ingredients to prep the bird after brining are: 1-2 sticks butter, room temperature 1 small handful of fresh rosemary, thyme & sage 1 cup (+/-) poultry rub. I like The Big Green Egg Dizzy Gourmet ‘Whirly Bird’ seasoning. 1 quart apple cider

The next day, ignite your Big Green Egg and bring up to a temperature of 350 degrees. 1. Remove the turkey from the brine. (Dispose of the brine.) Dry the surface of the turkey thoroughly with paper towels. Once dried, rub the butter on and under the skin. 2. Gently insert the herbs under the skin of the turkey. This will infuse the flavors into the meat. Once the butter has been applied and herbs inserted under the skin generously apply the rub of your choice all over the outside of the bird. I used the Big Green Egg Dizzy Gourmet ‘Whirly Bird’ seasoning, which we carry at Al’s. 3. Once your Big Green Egg has reached temperature, insert the ConvEGGtor-plate setter (legs up) for indirect cooking. 4. Put a drip pan (1/4 way full with apple cider) under the cooking grate and on top of the plate setter. This will allow the cider to evaporate, flavoring the turkey as well as catch the drippings. 5. Place the turkey in the center of the grate and insert a digital thermometer probe into the breast. You will want to plan on cooking the turkey for 12 minutes per pound or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Keep in mind, the turkey will continue to cook after you have removed it from The Egg. 6. Once the internal temperature has gotten to 165 degrees and you have removed it from the grill, tent it with aluminum foil and let it set for 10 minutes to let the juices settle. Carve and enjoy!

Baby, It’s Cold Outside! Protecting Your Plants As we head into winter and the temperatures begin to cool, the threat of frost and snow looms in the air. Last year’s cold snap caught many of us by surprise, killing plants that we nurtured for years. This year, let's vow to be more prepared by following tips to help protect your landscape from winter's wrath.

• Once temperatures approach

freezing, cover your tender plants with whatever is handy. Buckets, pots, old tablecloths or sheets all work well. Place bricks or rocks on top of or around the edges of your cover to keep it from blowing off.

• If temperatures are supposed

to stay below freezing the next day, leave your protection in place. If not, remember to remove any cover to allow the plants proper air flow and sunlight. Don't make the mistake of thinking that a plant can remain covered for multiple days even though the forecast calls for more than one night of frost.

• One to two days before the cold front

• If possible, move containers with

them. Well hydrated plants fair better in extreme temperatures than those that have been neglected. This goes for plants in the ground as well as plants in containers.

• Mulching can also aid in protecting

plants by providing insulation to the root systems. Cover around the base of the plant with leaves, compost, or bark chips up to 2 inches deep.
