V-BOMBERS BRITAIN’S NUCLEAR FRONTLINE IN THE COLD WAR
DR TONY REDDING
T
ISBN: 9781911667872 | £25.00 Hardback | 352 pages 234 x 156 mm | Illustrated throughout in b/w and colour World Rights
his is the story of a very British deterrent. Much has been written about the V-bombers – the Valiant, Victor and Vulcan – but virtually nothing has been said about their strategic nuclear strike role. How would Britain’s small force of subsonic bombers have retaliated following a Soviet attack? Would they have succeeded in visiting thermonuclear catastrophe on their Soviet targets? V-Bombers: Britain’s Nuclear Frontline in the Cold War is the first detailed account of the operational capability and credibility of Britain’s airborne nuclear deterrent during the peak years of the Cold War. This book is the product of seven years of research by the author, Dr Tony Redding. It includes a great deal of fresh material on V-force weapons, war mission, targeting, vulnerabilities and tactics for attacking targets within Soviet Russia. Over 70 V-force aircrew and ground crew are interviewed and over 300 operational research reports and other official documents are reviewed. This book demonstrates how the V-bombers retained a unilateral capacity to destroy the largest cities in the Soviet Union until the handover of the strategic nuclear deterrent to the Polaris submarines in 1969. It concludes that a small force of surviving V-bombers could have unleashed the explosive power of all Allied bombs dropped on Germany in six years of war. A sobering thought and a fascinating and necessary read for all those interested in this period of history.
Dr Tony Redding is a military historian and author with a particular interest in RAF Bomber Command. Following the publication of two books on Bomber Command in World War 2, Dr Redding began a detailed research programme on the British airborne nuclear deterrent, leading to a PhD from King’s College, London (War Studies) and this latest book, on the operational capability of the V-bomber force during the Cold War. Tony has lectured and broadcast widely on Bomber Command and other military subjects. He is also a founder member of The Chindit Society.

SOLO2DARWIN IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF AMY JOHNSON
AMANDA HARRISON FOREWORD BY POLLY VACHER MBE
W
ISBN: 9781911714040 | £20.00 Hardback | 192 pages 234 x 156 mm | Illustrated throughout in colour | World Rights
hilst learning to fly, Amanda Harrison discovered a beautiful vintage Tiger Moth. After researching the amazing pioneers who flew this fragile aircraft, a spark was ignited, and Amanda dreamed of emulating their adventures. On 11th May 2019, she made that dream a reality, taking off from Biggin Hill with the aim of flying to Darwin, Australia in 19 days – just as her idol Amy Johnson had done in 1930. Eschewing the convenience of modern aero technology, Amanda – known as the dyslexic pilot – chose to experience the authentic adventure and fly solo in a Tiger Moth. Solo2Darwin documents this journey. Indeed, the launch of her biplane, ‘Solo2Darwin’, received extensive press coverage including print features in The Times and The Telegraph and TV footage broadcasted on ITV and Channel 5 Evening News respectively. Faced with adversity, navigating through torturous mountain ranges covered in cloud, across seas, dodging thunderstorms and surviving engine failures, Amanda’s route had plenty of highs, lows and drama. Alongside this she also experienced the difficulties of solo-flying a biplane and having to navigate dangerous regions across the world. What makes Amanda’s expedition even more remarkable is that this was all undertaken whilst recovering from cancer. So strap in and prepare to go on a journey of a lifetime. Twelve countries, 2,600 miles, 46 flying hours, two engine failures, one aeroplane, one female pilot, all equals one amazing adventure! The launch of the book is timed to coincide with a documentary on Amanda’s flight, directed by Tony Klinger.
Amanda Harrison is a commercial pilot and flight instructor, specialising in vintage aircraft, with a tremendous sense of adventure. Eighteen months after being diagnosed with breast cancer, she started her journey in a Tiger Moth which led to this book. Inspired by her father’s remotecontrolled aircraft models, she started flying lessons at the age of 14 and gained her PPL after attending university. NEW BOOKS | 3

ntil the end of the Cold War in 1990, the RAF had several major bases worldwide – largely in those areas where the service had been based during the inter-war years. In Cold War Boys Overseas contributors recall their time at these foreign destinations. With almost half of RAF personnel serving abroad in the 1960s situated throughout Germany, the book starts its focus there with tales of monitoring the Soviet threat. The stories then advance to the warmer climates of the Near East and Far East where different challenges awaited those serving there. As the period progressed RAF squadrons saw changes to their equipment with Hunters, Javelins and Canberras being replaced by a new generation of combat aircraft such as the Buccaneer, Harrier, Jaguar, Phantom and Vulcan. Innovation of missile defence and the expansion of the role of helicopters were also critical at this time. How this affected the RAF is told by the aircrew and ground crew who served then. The stories that feature in the book reveal just how serving overseas was a different way of life and the chapters illustrate the many facets of the RAF’s capabilities across the globe. They also highlight a lifestyle that no longer exists in today’s RAF. Buckle up and allow the Cold War Boys to take you on a thrilling adventure across the globe.

hether an ardent aviation enthusiast or not, all those who have turned their eyes upward to the sky at an air show will be familiar with the thrilling flying performed by multiple aircraft. However, long before the world-famous RAF Red Arrows were simultaneously looping and rolling through carefully choreographed aerial routines, a wide variety of other military teams were taking it in turns to wow the crowds. With the formation of an aerobatic team serving a number of highly useful purposes – from expanding pilot capabilities, to showcasing a service’s skill to a PR engagement with members of the public – these aerial entertainers seldom failed to excite. Following the evolution of British aerobatic teams from the dawn of the jet age, this meticulously researched volume incorporates exhilarating first-hand accounts from a myriad of RAF and Fleet Air Arm outfits: including early Meteor and Vampire formations, lesser-known Hunter teams, popular Jet Provost units, the iconic Yellowjacks and their celebrated successors, right up to the ‘Reds’. So climb aboard a Sea Vixen, strap into a Lightning and follow the Black Arrows around their worldrecord 22-Hunter loop in this comprehensive profusely illustrated celebration of formation flying.

ROCKET BOYS THE EXHILARATING EXPLOITS OF THE EARLY MACH BUSTERS FROM 1945 ONWARDS
DAVID BAKER
T
ISBN: 9781911714095 | £25.00 Hardback | 256 pages 234 x 156 mm | Illustrated throughout in b/w and colour World Rights
his is a tale of the generation of test pilots flying experimental aircraft powered by rocket motors during the period from 1945 to the mid-1970s. It is not a technical description of the aircraft they flew but the narrative of the men who built the machines and the pilots who took to the air to achieve unprecedented speeds and altitudes unequalled to the present. It is a human story, but one carved out of the evolving post-war world, coming to terms with a new tension between global superpowers and one in which technological progress was arguably the greatest it has been since 1945. The book integrates the story of post-war US industry, the competitive drive to survive between plane-makers made rich by war production, challenged by the changed times of demobilisation and peace. Into the mix come fighter pilots and company men eager to sustain their craft and take on new challenges, alongside an emerging generation of post-war graduates straight from engineering or flight school, eager to make their mark. With a focus on those who achieved extraordinary things like Major ‘Chuck’ Yeager, Scott Crossfield and Joe Walker, there is also analysis of those outside of the US’s endeavours including how Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown became the only non-German to fly the rocket-powered Me 163 and the test-flying of John Booth and Peter Lamb. Rocket Boys is a record of the glorious years when nothing seemed impossible and which produced a group that propelled aviation into the stratosphere with devil-may-care attitudes and personal fortitude, with death and disaster stalking the very best.
With a background in the aviation and space industry, working with companies and government organisations in the UK and the USA, David Baker has made a lifelong study of aeronautical and aerospace projects to inform his research into the men and the machines of flight and flying. He is a prolific author and has edited various magazines including Horizon, Aviation News and SpaceFlight. 6 | NEW BOOKS

GESTAPO HUNTER THE REMARKABLE WARTIME CAREER OF MOSQUITO NAVIGATOR AND LEADER TED SISMORE DSO DFC** AFC
SEAN FEAST
G
ISBN: 9781911714118 | £25.00 Hardback | 224 pages 234 x 156 mm | Illustrated throughout in b/w and colour World Rights
estapo Hunter explores the charmed life and exceptional career of Ted Sismore, widely considered one of the RAF’s very best wartime navigators and leaders. A quiet, unassuming man who was nicknamed ‘Daisy’ on account of his youthful complexion, Ted was one of only a handful of aircrew to complete a tour of operations in Blenheims in the summer of 1941. He is best remembered, however, for his long association with the Mosquito planning and leading some of the Mossie’s most famous raids against the Nazi regime’s most-loathed characters. He flew in the daylight attack on Berlin, timed to coincide with an address being given by Herman Göring, for which he received the first of several awards for gallantry and which was widely publicised. He followed this with an attack on the Zeiss optical works at Jena during which their aircraft was hit over the target, and his pilot wounded. It was an attack at the extreme of the Mosquito’s range and marked the aircraft out for further special duties. Identified by Basil Embry, the mercurial AOC of 2 Group, as something of a kindred spirit, Ted joined the Group’s HQ staff, planning Operation Jericho, the famous attack on the prison at Amiens on 18 February 1944 and taking part on 31 October later that year in another ‘spectacular’ to bomb the Gestapo HQ at Aarhus in Denmark. Raids on the SS and Gestapo became something of a speciality, Ted leading further pinpoint bombing attacks on ‘Shell House’ in Copenhagen (Operation Carthage) and the Gestapo HQ at Odense. After the war, Ted teamed up with Mick Martin, the famous Dambuster, to break the flying record from London to Cape Town, in 1947, a journey of almost 7,000 miles. He later qualified as a pilot, flying Meteors, Javelins and Canberras, retiring as an air commodore. He died in 2012.

he inspiration for this brilliant anthology is the ‘I Learnt About Flying from That’ articles that first appeared in the RAF Flight Safety magazine Air Clues in the 1940s and continues to feature in the magazine to this day. Flying Through the Ranks gets a five-star start with an extraordinary tale from a Marshal of the Royal Air Force and continues in the same vein. Men and women of every rank – pilots, navigators, engineers, an RAF Regiment officer and airmen too – reveal similar intriguing experiences in both war and peace. Exciting, amusing, poignant at times, their stories say as much about the development of the RAF and the making of the Cold War warrior as they do about the individuals themselves. It’s impossible not to be moved by these rousing stories of courage and leadership, risk-taking and pressure, invention and adventure. Starkly exposing human fallibility at times, they highlight the skill and improvisation central to the flying business. Other common themes across some uncommon accounts are the sheer exhilaration of flying, the role that luck plays in everyone’s life and the unspoken bond of respect that binds aviation professionals together. Strap yourself in for a top flight experience!
Air Marshal G.A. ‘Black’ Robertson CBE BA FRAeS FRSA was born in Woodford, Essex, and educated nearby at Bancroft’s School. He earned his wings in 1966 after three years at the RAF College Cranwell. With postings worldwide, he flew all the RAF’s front-line fast jets and also qualified as a helicopter pilot. He views five staff tours in Whitehall as necessary penance for such privilege and counts the twin highlights of a 36-year career as command of 92 Squadron, followed by appointment as an ADC to HM The Queen. Black’s previous books focused on the wartime experiences of his father, ‘Robbie’, a decorated Spitfire ace, albeit the first included a parallel autobiographical element.

elicopter Boys explores the role of helicopters in military and civilian situations. Acclaimed author Richard Pike, alongside fourteen contributors, share stories of the diverse nature of their operations. From the dramatic war scenes during the Indo/ Pakistani war which saw one pilot’s actions earn him a VrC gallantry award to the experience of Chinook pilots on board the Atlantic Conveyor during the Falklands War. Then there are the civilian tales from rescue missions in the Outer Hebrides to being a pilot across the world in places such as Australia and Nigeria. There is also a focus on the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988 which saw the loss of 167 lives. The book ends with Pike’s experiences in Kosovo, helping to distribute emergency humanitarian aid on behalf of the United Nations World Food Programme shortly after the war ended in 1999. Each story is told with great detail conveying the action and excitement that helicopter pilots experienced with each operation. The scope, flair and pace of the writing in this book will appeal to the general reader as well as to the enthusiast. “Richard Pike once again compiles several intriguing tales of bravery.” Flypast “In several cases, Pike provides background information and interpretations about political and historical factors framing wartime situations, which helps the reader understand the circumstances surrounding missions.” Air Power History

n the second volume of Harrier Boys, as with the first, the history of this remarkable aircraft in service with UK armed forces is illustrated through personal reminiscences of the people who worked with it. The book begins with explanations of the mature concept of operations with the Harrier GR3 in the Cold War. It then progresses through the evolution of Harrier II, starting with the GR5, and updates to the Sea Harrier, while the potential battles to be fought necessitated ever-changing tactics and technology. The new Harriers used digital developments for airframe, engine and weapons control. Conflicts in Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan saw ground-attack missions move towards the delivery of smart weapons from medium level, rather than the dumb bombs and low level of the Cold War era – meaning that the Harrier had once more to demonstrate its legendary versatility. The introduction of the Sea Harrier FA2, with its beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles and improved radar, gave much improved air defence. The UK Harrier story ends with the closer integration of the RN and RAF forces, before the aircraft’s all-too-early retirement in 2010. “A superb book containing both historical observations and collections of authoritative accounts from those who operated the Harrier, either as pilots or ground crew. Together with its predecessor Harrier Boys Volume One, it is highly recommended.” Group Captain Jock Heron, RAF Historical Society Journal “What stories they are! As well as relating accounts of the bigwinged Harrier II – the GR5 then later GR7, GR9 and the ultimate GR9A, the later activities are also covered. Just like Volume 1 this is a terrific read that places the reader right in the cockpit.” Andrew Thomas NEW BOOKS | 11

uring five years of research for the four volumes of the Fleet Air Arm Boys book series covering the post-war FAA, former personnel not only contributed a huge quantity of stories but also sent many thousands of photographs, largely taken by themselves, and mostly never previously seen. It soon became clear that what was needed was a stand-alone photograph-heavy book, showing off many of these superb photos to best effect by giving them up to a full page or more with high quality reproduction. Whereas the ‘Boys’ books are all about fascinating stories supported by photos, here you have fascinating photos supported by some explanation and the occasional short supporting story. The opportunity has also been taken to expand the coverage to cover the whole history from the start of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) before the First World War to today, illustrating the changing equipment and roles of the service. Coverage is not limited to just a large representative group of aircraft, but also includes many ships and air stations. Most importantly, air and ground crew are highlighted throughout, both at work and at play, and those who lost their lives are suitably remembered. Flying with the Navy is a once-in-a-lifetime publication and a must-have for all devotees of this truly astounding branch of the armed forces. F LY I N G W I T H T H E

pening in 1941 Yeovilton, in Somerset, for most of its time was looked upon as the FAA’s fighter station. Its resident squadrons have flown such varied types as Seafire, Sea Venom, Sea Vixen, Phantom and finally the Sea Harrier. Its fighter days ended with the retirement of the Sea Harrier fleet in 2006. By that time the station already had a substantial rotary-wing community and, as the base for both the CHF and Wildcat forces, that is its major role today. It is also home to the Navy Wings historic aircraft fleet.

rom the end of 1943 to the final German surrender the US Fifteenth Air Force and the RAF’s 205 Group conducted a highly effective strategic bombing campaign from Italy against the German Reich and its allies in south-eastern Europe. This was part of the wider Allied air offensive against Germany by RAF Bomber Command and the US Eighth Air Force from Britain. In this sixth volume of this acclaimed series the authors examine in detail the gradual build-up and execution of the offensive that through the reduction of Romanian oil production and the blocking of the key supply route by the mining campaign on the Danube delivered real and lasting strategic effect. The activities of the Special Duties units are also covered, particularly the gallant attempts to support the Polish Home Army during the bloody Warsaw uprising. So too are the missions when the long-range bombers were switched to more tactical objectives in support of the land campaign in Italy. The Allied offensive fighter operations and the air defence operations of the Romanian, Hungarian, Bulgarian and Slovak air forces, as well as the Luftwaffe, are also described in detail. Written in the similar chronological style, presenting information in both narrative and tabular form, the authors offer the most comprehensive account yet published of this critical, but little-known, air campaign. MORE DETAILS TO BE ANNOUNCED NEXT YEAR.
