We’re finishing up one of the most vibrant times of the year for us: the grape harvest. At Terras Gauda, our oenology director, Emilio Rodríguez Canas, explains that "sometimes nature, thanks to her “wisdom,” surprises us. After the severe drought this summer and heat waves, the welcome rains before the harvest gave us a natural balance not often found in must. The grapes are at their peak: healthy, vigorous, fresh and aromatic. These virtues are being reflected in the wines we make from them".

3

Sustainability

The circular economy is at the heart of this project, for which we have an innovative vermicomposter that we use to add value to and process the bagasse generated during the wine-making.

The goal is to transform it into high-quality bioferti lizer for use in the vineyard, which allows us to close the life cycle of the grapevine and continue to make progress towards environmental sustainability.

From left to right: Antón Fonseca (vice president of Terras Gauda Group), Emi lio Rodríguez Canas (oenology director of the winery), Jorge Domínguez Martín, professor of Zoology at the University of Vigo, José Mª Fonseca (president of the Group), and Enrique Costas (CEO).

We gathered together members of the media to show the journalists reporting on the harvest the vermicomposting process we carry out in the vermicomposter.
6

Our international FlexiGrobots robotics, artificial intelligence and big data project is still underway. We have carried out new tests in the vineyard, with drones and land-based robots, in conjunction with the CSIC, Seresco and Wageningen University. The first on-site conference was also held in Serbia to assess the progress.

"2022 has been a cycle full of emotions conditioned by the high temperatures and the lack of rainfall that the Rioja vineyard has suffered in general, especially the Tempranillo. As the Garnacha and Graciano varieties are better adapted to high temperatures, they have evolved successfully.

At Finca Estarijo, it is worth noting the magnificent vegetative balance and the excellent health of the vineyard, as it is traditionally dry-farmed and 45 years of age. This vintage will be remembered as the earliest to date. Inside the winery we adjust the macerations, taking care of the extraction, to obtain fruity, round and balanced wines".

9

"After a winter marked by drought, we brought forward the harvest to preserve the natural acidity and as many aromas as possible. Since the grapes are smaller, we look for very gentle macerations to avoid an excessive concentration in the wines that would make us lose the natural elegance that calcareous soils transmit to us, the result is a short but intense and very elegant harvest"

"The high temperatures and low rainfall have left their mark on the vine cycle. In late August, the abundant rain boosted the ripening of the grapes on our vines. The vines were hydrated, the weather was cooler and the morning dew supplied water until the end of the harvest.

Among its other virtues, our soil, ideal for grape-growing, stands out for its water retention capacity. This, together with the powerful, deep root system, characteristic of old vineyards (some of which are over a century old), works to soothe the effects of extreme weather conditions like those this year, giving us incredible Mencía wines. A unique value this region provides, which sets us apart from the rest".
