Blasting:
The most cost-effective form of rock breaking, with less risk in regards to safety.
According to Mark Roberts, a specialist in blasting capability at Basil Read Mining, ‘blast design starts with us looking at the potential impact on the community.
We know that we can’t just throw the book at the community and say that we’re within or legal limits. Even if you’re within your blasting limits as per the USBF standard, that doesn’t help the community. So in our blast design we first establish if there is any potential impact on the community and on their properties’.
Roberts says Basil Read Mining first simulates its blasts so the shock waves don’t all meet at the affected properties at the same time.
‘The radial shock waves compound themselves, so when we time our blasts we ensure that those waves don’t overlap at a point where our neighbours’ properties are located,’ he says.
‘The software we use allows us to predict exactly what the outcome of the blast will be, and to make those small but important changes to the blast design.’
Still, talk about mining innovation tends to focus on digitalisation and automation, with explosives often seen as a necessary evil. After all, what more can you do with a few sticks of dynamite? But more and more companies are now answering that question, with a range of devices and formulations specifically designed to make mine blasting safer, cheaper and more efficient.

AMS2022 POST-EVENT SUMMARY
Welcome to the Africa Mining Summit (AMS2022) PostEvent Guide where, on behalf of PNYX and the entire AMS team, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all those who joined us at the Phakalane Golf Estate & Hotel in Gaborone, Botswana for the eighth annual Africa Mining Summit on 21-22 September 2022. Following the 2020 and 2021 online virtual AMS’, it was a delight to welcome everyone in-person this year.
There can be no doubt that mining companies operate in complex geographies where they face increasing challenges in responding to regulatory and compliance requirements. At the same time, they are also required to adapt to changing market conditions while adopting new innovations as they seek to produce more for less cost. Each Summit has continued to build upon the foundation laid by the African Union Commission to achieve the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) which seeks to maximise the continent’s resource wealth and promote the integration of Africa’s mining sector. This Guide offers a high-level summary of 2022’s Africa Mining Summit including a selection of photographs, agenda, Conference Chair’s summary, testimonial feedback, statistics, and full attendee list.
Our gratitude first goes to H.E. Albert M. Muchanga, Commissioner for Trade & Industry at the African Union Commission (AUC), for his endless support and that of his team, for their collaborative efforts in preparation for this important event. Likewise, we thank the Botswana Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology & Energy Security, and the Botswanan Chamber of Mines for their valuable assistance and guidance. My sincere thanks to all reading this publication - distinguished guests, mine owners, investors, developers, and academics, for taking time out of your busy schedules, and to those that continue to support our revered event format through afternoon 1-2-1 matchmaking meetings etc. My deep gratitude also goes to all our event Sponsors and delegates for their financial contributions to the event – their support and attendance shows the deep belief they have in Africa’s long-term prosperity. Lastly and by no means least It gives me great pleasure to offer once again my thanks to our AMS Conference Chair, Mr. Alan M. Clegg Pr.Eng., Independent Director of Resource Companies and Executive Chairman of Shuman Energy, for his expert guidance across the two days; delivering his frank, fearless Chairmanship, drawing upon his vast knowledge, experience and dedication to Africa’s mining sector proved, once again, hugely popular with participants.
AMS2022 began in traditional fashion, on Tuesday, with PreRegistration from 5pm, where participants could collect their delegate packs and access passes, and Summit Sponsors
could setup their exhibition stands in the Phakalane Convention Centre. At 7pm our ‘ice-breaker’ Evening Networking Reception began on the Hotel’s terrace, with participants able to discuss the two days ahead in a relaxed and informal setting. Enjoying snacks and refreshments, this also provided an ideal opportunity for Panel Chairs to engage with their fellow panellists.
2022’s Summit was brought officially underway at 8:30am on Wednesday, with an Opening Ceremony – PNYX’s Managing Director, Andrew Dowell, Dr. Marit Kitaw, Interim Director of the AUC’s African Minerals Development Center (AMDC), and AMS Conference Chair, Alan M. Clegg Pr.Eng., all took to the stage offering a warm welcome and best wishes for the deliberations ahead. Alan did an excellent job of setting the scene for AMS2022, recalling items mentioned at AMS2021 and introducing ongoing themes and requirements from the annual COP meetings.
The morning’s sessions began with a Keynote Address from Gold Sponsor, Reginald Demana, Divisional Executive at IDC -The Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa. Reginald expressed his excitement for mining, particularly Africa mining; real contribution can and is brought through mining but the challenge is leaving Botswana-like towns and villages after the mine. Session 1 on Battery Metals and their Role in the Energy Transition, Chaired by AMS Chair, Alan M. Clegg Pr.Eng., welcomed Premium Nickel Resources, Vanadium Resources Limited, and Chovu International Holdings. Session one’s experts discussed how the technology is there but if it hasn’t been used before then there are obvious concerns, and banks won’t necessarily support it. Careful consideration needs to be given to what comes out of the mines, reducing such and storing/dealing with it accordingly, whilst also moving to renewable sources for power such as rivers etc. Thinking outside the box, adopting technology, can lead to high-grade production from relatively low-grade minerals.
Following a brief Networking Tea & Coffee Break, where participants were able to tour the various exhibition stands within the Phakalane Convention Centre, Dr. Michael Seeger, Managing Director of MX Mining Capital Advisors GmbH offered the first of the Summit’s 15-minute CEO
Presentations on Post-COVID Considerations
THERE CAN BE NO DOUBT THAT MINING COMPANIES OPERATE IN COMPLEX GEOGRAPHIES WHERE THEY FACE INCREASING CHALLENGES IN RESPONDING TO REGULATORY AND COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
AMS2022 POST-EVENT SUMMARY
& Case Studies. Session 2 followed, on The role of Mining and Sustainable Finance in Socio Economic Development, Chaired by Emma Parker, Sustainable Business Opportunities Principal of Anglo American, and welcomed Consolidated Mining and Investments Ltd, Emor Mining, African Alliance Asset Management Botswana, and Impact Capital Africa (ICA). Discussing the difficulties but also the opportunities, session 2 debated the need for expanded thinking and project management, whilst offering investors more at a reduced risk. Opportunities exist, through impact investors for example, and it looks good for everyone however, a lack of ESG understanding presents its own issues; are industry benchmarks needed?
Allowing for a further Networking Tea & Coffee Break, Xavier Prevost, Senior Coal Analyst at XMP Consulting CC, gave a Keynote Address ahead of Session 3 on Coal, Chaired by Alan M. Clegg Pr.Eng., welcoming Maatla Resources (Pty) Ltd, Minergy Coal, Jindal Botswana, and Morupule Coal Mine. Panellists discussed the unrealistic view of coal and how much it will be needed moving forward given the many years,
possibly centuries, it will take before the likes of solar have a baseline effect. For example, banks have been returning to coal-led investments having previously declined them. Despite the climate change narrative and ESG, coal remains the solution today and tomorrow. Botswana has a great opportunity to become the example, it has the Government’s support and is emerging from the diamond state. For coal mines, improvements to infrastructure remains the key focus, particularly rail since coal tends to come in large quantities.
Participants were then treated to a Networking Lunch Break in the Gaborone warm sunshine, before moving to the Summit’s afternoon 1-2-1 Matchmaking Meetings Pre-event, utilising PNYX’s secure scheduling system, each company was able to select their preferred meetings from our delegation of mining officials. The PNYX team would schedule hundreds of 1-2-1 meetings, providing each company with a customised schedule of confirmed appointments before setting off for Botswana. These 15-minute introductory meetings allow for valuable face-to-face time and participants were once again quick to commend their effectiveness and efficiency.
Concluding day one, whilst visiting Gaborone, PNYX was keen for participants to sample traditional dishes and local entertainment. Offering further networking and opportunities for continued discussions following the afternoon meetings, Debswana generously Sponsored the AMS2022 Cultural Dinner. Making the most of the warm evening and eating outdoors, Debswana warmly welcomed everyone to an informal evening of refreshments, asked them to choose their food, and the huge group of local African dancers began! A relaxed and enjoyable evening after a busy day of high-level deliberation and 1-2-1 meetings.
Thursday of the 2022 Africa Mining Summit commenced with Day Two Welcoming Remarks from the AMS Conference Chair, Alan M. Clegg Pr.Eng., offering a brief summary of day one’s salient points and a look ahead to the key talking points ahead. Dr Wolf Martinick, Executive
of Botala Energy Limited treated the audience to his CEO
on Botala Energy’s Development of Coal Seam Gas in Botswana to Facilitate Transition to Renewables & Energy Independence. Then followed day two’s first panel Session 5 on Junior Mining, Chaired by James Campbell, Managing Director of Botswana Diamonds plc, welcoming Exporien Mining P/L, Spectrem Air Pty Ltd, and the Botswana Chamber of Mines. Panellists discussed how the global mining industry is experiencing unprecedented change and needs to utilise its strong current financial position to make major investments in exploration, production, processing and refining in a responsible and sustainable fashion, following 2016’s historic eleven-year low. Junior exploration budgets have increased by 62% for example, however, majors continue to account for half of global exploration budgets, having increased 27% from 2020 to 2021. Notably, South Africa’s share of global exploration budgets has dropped to 0.76% and their ranking in Africa continues to decline.
Following a brief Networking Tea & Coffee Break, Dr. Siyanda Mngadi, Managing Director of Ntuthuko Resources, introduced his CEO Presentation on Mineral Exploration & the Role of Historical Data. Equally, Jacob Thamage, Diamond Hub Coordinator of Mount Burgess Botswana, gave his CEO Presentation offering a Kihabi Project Update, immediately following Session 6 on Mining Innovation, Chaired by Karen Pieterse, Sales Director - Southern Africa of SES, welcoming Debswana Diamond Company, Paramount, SAIMM - The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and

Either side of our final Networking Tea & Coffee Break, saw the final CEO Presentations from Louis Loubser, Chief Executive Officer of ARM Andalusite, on Andalusite & Related Minerals to Invest In, followed by Kgosi Marata, Director of Basil Read Mining, offering a detailed overview of their
organisation and operations. Concluding the Africa Mining Summit panels for 2022 was Session 8 on Supply Chain & Logistics, offering the audience an up close and personal interview with Phillip Lisindi, Lead - Supply Chain of Debswana Diamond Company, conducted by Dr. Ayanda Nteta, Director of Pula Research & Consulting.
Finally, AMS2022’s Conference Chair, Alan M. Clegg Pr.Eng., Independent Director of Resource Companies and Executive Chairman of Shuman Energy, together with PNYX’s Managing Director, Andrew Dowell, took to the stage for the Closing Ceremony. Both offered their sincere thanks for yet another two days of outstanding discussions and engagements, especially through the many networking sessions and Wednesday’s afternoon 1-2-1 matchmaking meetings. Andrew offered special thanks to Alan for his expert stewardship as AMS Conference Chair, which he has now fulfilled for many years in support of the Summit’s
development. Lastly, Andrew expressed deep gratitude to the Summit’s sponsors for their support, and that of all the officials for their continued commitment to PNYX’s event format.
As has now been the tradition at the Africa Mining Summit (AMS2022) for many years, Friday saw the return of the AMS Charity Golf Day. Generously Sponsored by Knight Piesold, gifting each player a cap and commemorative pull-string bag, 13 players enjoyed a wonderful morning’s round of golf on Botswana’s only 18-hole Championship Golf Course, at the Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort. Competing for a range of prizes including longest drive and nearest the pin,
the day’s top prize ended in a draw with 39 points apiece. On countback, coming out on-top was Debswana Diamond Company, Sylvester Katambarare (19 handicap). A wonderful, enjoyable end to AMS2022, with much to take away from Botswana and work on over the coming year.
I trust all participants leave the Africa Mining Summit (AMS2022) with enduring knowledge of the various challenges and opportunities Africa’s mining sector faces moving forward, coupled with renewed enthusiasm and a wealth of new contacts, having learned of a wide range of potential solutions that will actively aid one of the most important regions on the planet.
We very much look forward to welcoming you in Gaborone, Botswana next year, on 20th-21st September 2023!
Yours Sincerely

SUMMIT CHAIR’S CLOSE-OUT SUMMARY
Dear Colleagues, It is with great pleasure that on behalf of PNYX, and myself, that I can herewith report back to you, in summary, regarding the outcomes and success of the 8th Africa Mining Summit (AMS2022) held in Gaborone, Botswana. AMS2022 can truly be said to have lived up to its branding as an established ‘Institution’, still developing and growing from strength to strength, with SADC regional ministerial officials requesting such an event is required in their own backyard soonest. In opening, I reminded Summit participants that the prevailing narrative translates directly to the need for exponential growth in supply of Battery Metals, also industrial quantities of precious metals for Solar Panels, Hydrogen Fuel cells and LOHC. Nuclear energy miraculously branded ‘green’ and confirmed a necessity for clean base load energy supply, as renewable generation alone does not meet the requirements of an industrial world.
In her opening address Dr. Marit Kitaw – Interim Director of the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC), representing the AU Commission, added a reminder that this event is a true Pan-African platform for Policy debate and for mobilising the private sector within the African Mining Vision (AMV) and that the Private Sector Compact (PSC) is a tool to facilitate dialogue to reduce and share risk created within the African Minerals Governance Framework (AMGF).
The keynote address by Reginald Demana, Divisional Executive for Mining & Energy of the IDC, gave a refreshing perspective on DeFi (Decentralised Financing) as a vehicle for clear impact investing, with a focus on what would normally be seen as risky projects having resulted in success with exceptional returns.
The panel sessions Chaired by senior industry leaders were most informative, frank and at times controversial but in a positive way, with topical issues addressed and question/debate from delegate audience participation strongly interactive.
Panel 1 highlighted paradoxically, what continues to be overlooked within the policy making Government circles, the same three facts:
• There is not enough sustainable production of any of metals & commodities to meet forecasted needs.
• The ‘Green Policy’ environment has extended new mine/project permitting cycles and this extends development of any new and potentially economic production to beyond 15 years, in some cases, like Uranium production & processing, to >20 years.
• The levels and sources of Capital funding required, both equity & debt, are unclear, you can already see inflation impacts and the view is that we need US$5Tr to US$6Tr in investment, inflation adjusted.
The chances of Net-Zero emissions by 2050 simply is extremely unlikely now.
The CEO presentations were outstanding too, notably by Dr Mike Seeger who built on the opening keynote by Reginald Demana, offering case studies on projects that acquired funding because they covered key value chain elements.
Panel 2, focussed on ESG matters and unlocked the mystery on what really matters. The emergence of Social as the most important element currently and how managing expectations in this regard is key, and especially awareness of social media and the good or damage it can do. Also, how Governance focus by investors has moved on from Independence on the Board to a clear Environment impact and social impact matters.
Panel 3 tackled the ‘Elephant-in-the-room’, Coal. Highlighting the massive change in sentiment on the back of the energy crisis and the clear fact and understanding that Coal fired base-load power is here to stay, even grow in the next 3 to 4 decades. Clean Coal Technologies exist and can be deployed to the extent that it can deliver a lower footprint on a full carbon balance sheet on a Mw-to-Mw basis than Solar PV or Wind power.
The panels that followed addressed well, Junior Mining, Mining innovation, Female contribution and perspectives in the industry, and supply chain issues to be considered today and the future.
The feedback received from delegates was rewarding as it illustrated that both the content offered, and the style of interaction delivered succeeded in expanded learning and added value for all. One delegate summed it up succinctly, “Superb event, well organised, frank, fearless discussion panels, well structured, prepared & chaired; ample networking opportunities – far exceeding expectations!”.
I am sure you will join me in applauding the AU Commission and Botswana Ministry for the support for this event, and PNYX for organising it. I now look forward to the 9th AMS set for 20-21 September 2023. I shall look forward to seeing you there.
On behalf of the organisers. With Best Regards, I remain, Yours Faithfully,
ALAN M. CLEGG | Conference Chairman Pr. Eng. Pr.CPM PMP FSAIMM

SESSION 3: COAL
Much of the world’s growth over the past two hundred years has been due to the ever-increasing use of affordable energy derived from fossil fuels led by coal, followed by oil, and natural gas. Affordable hydrocarbons and predominantly coal-fuelled energy drove industrial expansion, created millions of jobs, and generated wealth for a large portion of the global population. However, the recent decades discussion has been led by a largely pseudo-scientific approach first to a ‘Global Warming’, then renamed Climate Change and the proposed dangers of carbon dioxide gas (CO2) released from fossil fuel combustion around the world, in particular from coal. Now, in 2022 suddenly, with the world facing the realisation that the ‘Green Energy’ transition to a renewable base-load is not achievable in short term (by 2040?) and a growing ‘energy cliff’ of lack of availability and inflation, the political narrative has dramatically changed its tune.

The mining industry is notoriously conservative in its approach to application of new technologies, mining executive decision-makers never want to be first and everyone is happy to be second. This has harmed the industries return on investment historically as regulatory changes, royalty regimes imposed by governments and inflation impacts impacted the bottom line. Has this approach now changed and if not why not? What examples can we point to that are in play that could change the industry’s attitude to new technology globally?
