AMS2023 POST-EVENT SUMMARY TUESDAY 19 SEPTEMBER
New for 2023, the Africa Mining Summit (AMS2023) commenced with a visit to Debswana’s Jwaneng Diamond Mine. A small number of investors and mining experts took the almost 2.5-hour trip west for a fascinating and educational experience, visiting one of the world’s richest diamond mines, to learn about the mining process, the history of the mine, and the importance of the diamond industry to Botswana. In traditional fashion, Tuesday featured Pre-Registration from 4:30pm, where participants could collect their delegate packs and access passes, and Summit Sponsors could setup their exhibition stands in the Phakalane Convention Centre. At 7pm our ‘ice-breaker’ Evening Networking Reception began on the Hotel’s Lobby Terrace, with participants able to discuss the two days ahead in a relaxed and informal setting. Enjoying snacks and refreshments, this also provided an ideal opportunity for Panel Chairs to engage with their fellow panellists.
WEDNESDAY 20 SEPTEMBER
2023’s Summit was brought officially underway at 8:45am on Wednesday, with an Opening Ceremony – PNYX’s Managing Director, Andrew Dowell, Botswana’s Minister of Education & Skills Development, Hon. Dr. Douglas Letsholathebe, and AMS2023 Conference Chair, Jacob Thamage, Coordinator of the Diamond Hub - Botswana, all took to the stage offering a warm welcome and best wishes for the deliberations ahead. Jacob did an excellent job of setting the scene for AMS2023 and highlighting some of the key discussion points set to take place across the coming two days. The morning’s panels began with Session 1: Diamonds, Chaired by James Campbell, Managing Director of Botswana Diamonds plc, welcoming Bakani Motlhabani, Executive Head of Technology & Technical Services of Debswana, Johane Mchive, Karowe Mine General Manager of Lucara Botswana, Dr. Leon Daniels, Director of Pangolin Diamonds, Mmetla Masire, Managing Director of Okavango Diamond Company, and Omogolo “Bonjo” Mathumo , Director HB Botswana of HB Antwerp. Panellists focused on three leading themes: a 30-40% fall in diamond prices, the growth of labgrown diamonds, and exploration challenges &
funding issues. Diamond prices can be influenced by various factors, including economic conditions, consumer demand, and market sentiment. The rise of lab-grown diamonds has disrupted the traditional diamond industry but it’s not a time to panic, economic challenges are distorting the view, but it will settle down and in time, lab-grown diamonds will find their place. Finding new diamond deposits is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. Many of the more ‘easily accessible’ diamond mines have been exhausted, and exploration companies are now forced to search in more remote and geologically challenging regions. Diamond exploration and mining require significant financial investments. When diamond prices fall, exploration and mining companies may struggle to secure funding for their projects. Thus, the diamond industry is adapting in various ways such as diversifying through stakeholder collaborations and adding value to other industries, significantly improving running efficiencies, maximising technological advancements such as digitalisation (including exploration), developing sustainable and ethical sourcing processes, and adjusting market strategies to emphasize their unique qualities. The diamond industry is evolving to meet the changing market dynamics, and its ability to adapt to these challenges will determine its future success. At the same time, Government may consider changing policy to inspire diamond exploration (particularly small sites) because it is the only resource that currently requires a full license under the Mining & Minerals Act.
Session 2 followed, on the Energy Transition and Demand for Strategic Metals Chaired by Alan M. Clegg Pr.Eng Pr.CPM PMP FSAIMM FIOQ F.Inst.D, Independent Mining & Energy Professional, welcoming Neeraj Saxena, Country Director of Jindal Africa, Mike Mohlala, Director of Matsoku Investments/Leago Colliery, George Roach, Chief Executive Officer of Premier African Minerals, and Sibonelo Nkosi, Managing Partner of Giantfuse Capital Partners. Setting the scene, Alan detailed how the ‘Energy Transition’ has become a global political agenda, noting that the science, as defined by politicians, is definitively not settled, the empirical and physical impacts of this transition in terms of demand and supply availability, must be understood and widely informed to the population at large. There are several interconnected factors driving the necessity including Environmental Concerns, Finite
Nature of Fossil Fuels, Technological Advances, and Economic Opportunities. To ensure the desired outcomes of the Energy Transition are reasonable, achievable, and sustainable (especially for affected communities), informed decisionmaking is crucial, including Science-Based Policies, Public Awareness, Technological Innovation, and International Cooperation. The vast needs to meet green demands were highlighted, including how long it really takes to develop new mines and transition. The SADC region’s gigawatt deficit has more than tripled in the past decade and a half however, Botswana’s energy sufficiency is 98% (60% in South Africa) – Botswana is ranked 1st in Africa and 2nd in the world behind Nevada only. George stressed the need for a cooperative effort in the SADC region to make resources available, in order to achieve targets. In Zimbabwe (lithium), they were able to make incredibly quick progress in just one year by taking a different view of risk/outlook alongside a Chinese partner. Panellists also stressed that coal is really the life of Africa for at least the coming decade however, there’s no reason why coal can’t be ‘green’. We are in a constant state of transition however, right now we are even struggling to provide power and energy across the SADC region. Africa has great opportunity to diversify and innovate, incentives and cross-border connectivity are key.
@PNYXLTD | #AMS2023
Following a brief Networking Tea & Coffee Break, where participants were able to tour the various exhibition stands within the Phakalane Convention Centre, Vuslat Bayoglu, Managing Director of Menar offered Keynote Address on the Innovative Coal Use Will Support Global Energy Security. Vuslat gave a detailed presentation on how electricity generation has quadrupled in the last 40 years, driven by huge increases in demand, 60% of electricity being generated by coal & gas in 2022. He discussed projected coal demand versus available coal for export in South Africa, and how coal contributes the global economy, accounting for >38% of the world’s energy generation equating to 4.7million jobs. Coal consumption is still at some of its highest levels, with China accounting for 53% of the world’s demands. By comparison, Africa has the world’s lowest levels of energy use, with an estimated 600million people without access to electricity in sub-Saharan region; we need to connect 90million people per ear to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030!

A Keynote Address followed, given by Thabiso Sekano, Head Mining & Metals at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), AMS2023 Gold Sponsors, on Financing Mining Projects in Africa. Thabiso presented how IDC is South Africa’s largest development finance institution, building industrial capacity to fuel the country’s economic growth, by funding viable businesses. He gave an overview of 2022’s performance highlights, the role of the IDC as a partner, and details of the industry sectors they provide funding to. Thabiso also outlined the seven

AMS2023 POST-EVENT SUMMARY investment guidelines and considerations they implement across Africa. Dr. Wolf Martinick, Executive Chairman of Botala Energy Ltd then gave a Spotlight Address on Botala Energy, commencing with a corporate overview including highlights and capital structure. Wolf shared details of Botala Energy’s project locations, including thorough details of their Serowe CBM Project, its plot, the Leupane preliminary site layout, project Piste commercial pilot, concluding with an overview of their current exploration and appraisal programme, whilst introducing their MoU with Solar Finland. It was time for a much-needed Networking Lunch Break in the Gaborone warm sunshine, a chance to relax and enjoy a buffet lunch with colleagues, before heading back to the Phakalane Convention Centre for Session 3: Junior Mining, Chaired by Dr. Antony Harwood, President and CEO of Montero Mining and Exploration Ltd., welcoming Charles Siwawa, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Botswana Chamber of Mines, Nametso Violet Ntsosa-Carr, SADC Chairperson of the SADC Women in Mining (WIM) Association, Sam Chikowore, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Exporien Mining P/L., and James Campbell, Managing Director of Botswana Diamonds plc.
Tony began by outlining what a junior miner is – mining small deposits, perhaps with just a few hundred employees, in Canada, junior miners generate <$5million but that does differ by region/ continent. It can be incredibly hard for junior miners to secure funding, off-shore funders possibly one of the easiest but it’s never easy trying to mitigate the risks and ideally needs to be someone you know and trust. Sam spoke to Zimbabwe’s profound skills base, besides universities, the Bolowe School of Mines is the envy of the region, but benefitting from it in-country remains a challenge. At the same time, young people need to be prepared to put 10+ years in to developing their field skills. Lithium is now becoming a major success for Zimbabwe, one mine of which was discovered by a junior. James detailed the need for a portfolio of assets – diversify
political risk with a portfolio of projects to show risk versus locations, and something not so appealing to a major could easily be profitable for a junior. Unfortunately, the pandemic and the global crisis had a devastating effect on the SADC region’s junior miners, with almost 90% of them ceasing. Starting up is particularly difficult and especially for women be patient, be bold and persevere, exploring every possible avenue, especially networks but hopefully Government policy and support will assist. The Chamber of Commerce have been instrumental for SADC WIM, including trips to Windhoek and Kampala. Permitting issues have been addressed however, paperwork remains overbearing, the Botswana Geoscience Institute (BGI) has helped a lot recently and will continue to do so moving forward. Inclusivity has improved greatly i.e. gender balance, young people and women, the Chamber has also trebled its membership over the past decade. Participants were treated to a further Networking Tea & Coffee Break before moving to the Summit’s afternoon 1-2-1 Matchmaking Meetings. Preevent, utilising PNYX’s secure scheduling system, each company was able to select their preferred meetings from our delegation of mining officials. The PNYX team would schedule hundreds of 1-2-1 meetings, providing each company with a customised schedule of confirmed appointments before setting off for Botswana. These 15-minute introductory meetings allow for valuable face-toface time and participants were once again quick to commend their effectiveness and efficiency. Concluding day one, whilst visiting Gaborone, PNYX was keen for participants to sample traditional dishes and local entertainment. Offering further networking and opportunities for continued discussions following the afternoon meetings, Debswana generously Sponsored an incredible AMS2023 Cultural Dinner. Making the most of the warm evening, and eating outdoors, Debswana transformed the Phakalane’s lake-

side patio to the most stunning dinning area, including a red-carpet entrance, stage, photo booth, and beautifully decorated dining tables for all AMS2023 attendees to enjoy. Debswana warmly welcomed everyone with a champagne reception, followed by brief introductions from Andrew Dowell, Managing Director of PNYX, and Debswana’s Bakani Motlhabani, Executive Head of Technology & Technical Services, an informal evening of refreshments and a buffet dinner ensued, including a huge group of local African dancers who encouraged everyone to join in! A relaxed and enjoyable evening after a busy day of high-level deliberation and 1-2-1 meetings.
THURSDAY 21 SEPTEMBER
Thursday of the 2023 Africa Mining Summit commenced with Day Two Welcoming Remarks from the AMS2023 Conference Chair, Jacob Thamage, Coordinator of the Diamond Hub – Botswana, offering a look ahead to day two’s key talking points, wishing delegates the same productive efforts from yesterday, topped off by Debswana’s amazing Cultural Dinner Wednesday evening. Michelle Manook, CEO of the World Coal Association would give day two’s Keynote Address by video, she looked ahead to what our energy future could look like, leaping forward to 2050 and what the Paris Agreement achievements might look like, and progress made the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and importantly, how coal has and remains instrumental to achieving such goals. Michelle stressed that we do not need to wait until 2050 to realise the good outcomes and reverse the adverse ones, opportunities are already being explored and embedded however, the rapid deployment of

technological advancements is being held back by biased policy that have no bearing on reality. The world is already off-course to limiting global warming to 1.5degrees; we know, up to 99% of carbon emissions from coal is technically feasible and within reach using technologies and processes in existence today. Michelle also shared details of existing carbon capture and storage projects, and the many in the pipeline (190+), some of which are earmarked for coal, already having a significant positive effect on production. The potential for coal to contribute to the energy transition, in both an energy and non-energy way is material and real. Michelle introduced the concept of sustainable coal, a critical resource providing to the 21st century what it has already provided to develop and advance modern society with security and solutions that provide stability and propel us forward. She detailed how some of the world’s largest countries/economies (Japan, China, India, the U.S. etc.) are becoming acutely aware that new abated coal industry has a role to play now and into the future. Botswana is in a unique position to join this growing new alliance and control its future economic prosperity; in-country initiatives align with the Government’s strategy to utilise abundant coal reserves for economic growth, job creation and a diversified economy. At the same time, like South Africa, Botswana’s integrated resource plan aims to make renewable energy account for at least 15% of the country’s energy mix by 2030. Coal and renewables can and must coexist, this is the only way countries can deliver the energy security necessary to drive economies, support society, and ultimately tackle climate change. The World Coal Association calls for more realism and rationality in the energy debate and by extension, the economic development opportunities particularly for developing and emerging nations.

12 Parshant Kumar Goyal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jindal Africa, Jacques Badenhorst, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Maatla Resources (Pty) Ltd, Divyesh Kalan, Business Development Executive of Makoya Advisory, and Adrian Strydom, Chief Operating Officer of the Morupule Coal Mine. The future of coal in Africa is a complex and evolving issue shaped by a combination of factors, including energy demand, environmental concerns, the growth of renewable energy, technology advancements, and government policies. There is of course a place for all energy sources; the resources needed for a ‘green transition’ at the timescales being pushed are unrealistic – coal needs to coexist responsibly. It is feasible, almost guaranteed, that coal production will increase due to the demands of an increased population and infrastructure needed. Particularly in Africa, improvement in infrastructure is desperately needed – the logistics of mine-to-market produce is the most challenging and expensive aspect. Going forward, investment should also be made in feasibility studies and other options downstream, to diversify and increase employment. Mines are committed to expanding responsibly, to show that it can be done, thus changing past mindsets whilst adopting new technologies. At the same time, it was stressed again that the development of infrastructure is essential alongside mine investment, it’s crucial to production and related costs. Funding remains a challenge because investment in coal is seen as dirty vs green - only 10% of global investment goes to raw materials but mindsets are changing because banks
etc. can’t guarantee returns either. Collaboration i.e. not reinventing the wheel and utilising proven technology will prove essential – everyone knows demand for energy has/continues to grow, South Africa is lacking power supplies for example, and at this stage, renewables aren’t enough to meet demand. Wrapping up Thursday’s morning session was a Spotlight Address from Martin Eales, CEO of Ironveld plc, immediately followed by a CEO Presentation from Andrew Pedley, CEO of Ilala Metals Limited. Martin shared an overview of Ironveld plc, currently valued as an explorer but Ironveld is a producer – high purity iron, vanadium, and titanium. Mining activities commenced Q4 2022 whilst a joint venture with Pace SA and Sable will establish DMS Magnetite trading business with first sales expected October 2023. Ironveld purchased a smelter late 2022 with the transition becoming unconditional in March 2023 – two furnaces are operational with a third to come in line in October 2023, and the facility has expansion space for a fourth furnace. Moving forward, Ironveld’s high purity iron can be converted into powder form, which commands materially higher selling prices and is subject to strong demand from the ‘Additive Manufacturing’ industry (e.g. car parts) and in 3D printing. Andrew spoke on Ilala Metals’ Battery and Energy Metals Exploration in Botswana and Namibia, giving details of their copper, uranium, and lithium projects. He identified a new generation of copper mining in Botswana, regarding major discoveries on the Kalahari Copper Belt (KCB) since 2010, and detailed Ilala’s
@PNYXLTD | #AMS2023
copper projects therein. Exploration on the KCB is challenging but with a high reward however, there is a need to work together more. Andrew also spoke to how uranium is on the up, with 66 new nuclear plants under construction in 14 countries; currently, >50% of global uranium is mined by In Situ Recovery (ISR). He shared that Ilala’s Serule Project has possibly the most prospective uranium Prospecting License in Botswana, targeting the extension of A-Cap Energy’s Letlhakane deposit, one of the world’s top 10 undeveloped uranium deposits. AMS2023 delegates were then treated to some fresh Botswanan air and a Networking Tea & Coffee Break, further opportunity to explore sponsor’s exhibition stands, before heading back to the Phakalane Convention Centre for a brace of CEO Presentations from Moemedi Moyo, Sector Lead Mining and Natural Resources of Rand Merchant Bank Botswana, and Philip le Roux, CEO of Arcadia Minerals. Moemedi presented Sustainable Finance & Global ESG Trends: Impact & Opportunity for Botswana’s Mining Sector. He started with an Overview of FirstRand, Africa’s largest financial institution by market capitalisation, sharing details of their portfolio. Moemedi looked at ‘What to expect in 2023?’ by sharing takeaways from their Mining & Metals Survey - the 2022 survey result paints a picture of opportunity for those engaged in and willing to transition to those products that will be a core focus for the energy transition. He also shared the top 10 business risks and opportunities for mining and metals, identifying the rise of sustainability and ESG; RMB is the market leader in sustainable finance (a rapidly growing segment of the financial market). Moemedi demonstrated RMB’s diverse credentials across Social, Green and Sustainability linked instruments, and why a company should consider a Sustainable Finance structure, offering case study details in Respublica - Social Loan, and FNB Namibia - Green Bond. Philip le Roux went on to detail Arcadia Minerals’ Battery Metals portfolio in Namibia - a diversified battery-metals explorer, offering value creation through targeted exploration. He shared highlights
of Arcadia Minerals’ Swanson Tantalum Mine, and its comparison with global deposits: mineral resources & In-Situ grades. He also shared details of their KumKum Ni-Pd Project, Bitterwasser Lithium Clay Project, and Karibib Copper Gold Project.

Moving towards lunch, Session 6 was next, a Fireside Chat on the Outlook for 2023 and beyond, Africa and the Global Markets, Chaired by Dr. Michael Seeger, Managing Director of MX Mining Capital Advisors GmbH, welcoming Alan M. Clegg Pr.Eng Pr.CPM PMP FSAIMM FIOQ F.Inst.D, Independent Mining & Energy Professional. Mike and Alan would initially discuss two of Mike’s recent trips – his third trip to China where he saw cities with 70% electric vehicle (EV) take-up and significant use of solar panels etc. compared to a recent to his motherland, Germany where energy supply remains a challenge. Alan remarked that having dealt with China since the 1980s, it’s their mindset that sets them apart from the western world; what Mike has seen is the result of multi-decade, long-term thinking, planning, investigation, and major investment by a government that wanted to capture the future 50+ years ago. It’s a leadership model demonstrated by few countries, for example, Turkey went from the 43rd largest economy in 2000 to 11th in the world within 15 years – it’s a leadership model that seems to be very hard tom come by in Africa and it’s a problem. If Africa really wants to achieve what China is achieving, it needs a more collaborative mindset, a different administrative model, a willingness to work together rather than trying to first or the best. China is obviously very involved in energy production across Africa, this should be embraced, and their leadership model generally adopted. Back to Germany, we have seen the western world demand seismic shifts in energy production, almost overnight, with large, established companies investing huge quantities of money but without a single agreement with a raw materials supplier. At the same time, they are unable to meet carbon emission targets if they need to ship batteries off to Africa; there is a significant misunderstanding of the raw material value chain,

AMS2023 POST-EVENT SUMMARY can be used to locally manufacture VRF batteries for power storage generated from solar. Koketso Jackson would speak about Gold Mining at the Mupane Gold Mine “Unlocking the full potential of the Tati Greenstone Belt (TGB)” and a story of resilience. Koketso gave an overview of the ownership of the Hawks Mining Company, and an exploration and mining history of the TGB including the geological setting, their four mining areas/ current ore sources, grades, and monthly outputs. He spoke about their metallurgical processing, the main product being gold, their Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) and outputs, and the long-term strategic projects including exploration and upside potential. Koketso concluded with details of their Shashe ML exploration potential as “the next untapped big project”. but this presents a great opportunity for Africa. Mike went on to discuss the money, in terms of where Africa could be headed since money often dictates direction, from a coal perspective and the green financing arena – financing being very difficult to raise for coal mining whilst ‘green’ financing in solar or lithium for example, remains oversubscribed. Alan spoke about the narrative i.e. financing energy and economic development, not the old-school, black coal of old but an economic story that will generate returns for the long-term and for investors. The financing world is changing, big pension funds can’t rely on banks, the pandemic killed property portfolios especially commercial, financiers are now looking at ‘sustainable finance’ in terms of shortterm risk but long-term returns whilst managing the risks. Mike wrapped up by identifying the threat to Africa as opportunities; with mining starting up again in Europe in order to reduce their carbon footprint, Africa needs to embrace collaboration and promote the amazing skills it has for the energy sector moving forward. Following Mike and Alan’s Fireside Chat came a Spotlight Address from Ian McGeorge, Geologist at Mount Burgess Mining, and a CEO Presentation from Koketso Jackson, General Manager of Mupane Gold Mining - Hawks Mining Company. Ian presented an overview of their 100%-owned polymetallic project in northwest Botswana, in the Aha Hills of Ngamiland on the Namibian border. He shared details of two specific deposits, the Kihabe and Nxuu deposits, giving details of drilling progress and mineral quality including drill holes maps and a demonstration of how very complex the deposit sites are. Ian also shared resource estimates (metal/mineral volumes) at the two deposit sites, exploration targets, and the potential contribution of modern strategic metals, Gallium, Germanium and Vanadium Pentoxide for the Nxuu Deposit. Ian concluded with benefits to Botswana such as not needing to export concentrates for smelting since Zinc metal and Vanadium Pentoxide can be produced on site, and that Vanadium Pentoxide
After a very busy morning of discussion and presentations, AMS2023 delegates were treated to a Networking Lunch Break again, being able to enjoy the Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel’s food, service, and backdrop. Delegates would head back to the Phakalane Convention Centre for one final session; Session 7 would offer four separate Spotlight Presentations from Mandy Malebe, CEO of Lethabo Exploration, Tiyapo Ngwisanyi, Managing Director of Kavango Minerals, Nchakha Moloi, Executive Chairman of Motjoli Iron Ore Company, and James Allan, CEO of Sable Exploration and Mining Limited. Mandy began with an overview of Lethabo Exploration, a 100% black owned and 100% South African entity, sharing details of their vision, mission and service pillars, plus a detailed summary of their social responsibilities. Lethabo Exploration has been a member of the Minerals Council South Africa since 2020, and is a participant of the 2023 cohort on the Entrepreneurial Accelerator Programme at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). Across three farms, the Malekskraal, Waterkop, and Mecklenberg their minerals include iron, vanadium, chrome, platinum group metals, titanium, andalusite and others. Tiyapo Ngwisanyi shared the history of Kavango Minerals, dating back to 2011 when it was incorporated in the Republic of Botswana. They have participated in a number of joint ventures since then and now have three main projects: Ni/ Cu in the Kalahari Suture Zone (KSZ Project), Au in Ditau Project (East of KSZ), and Cu in the Kalahari Copperbelt. Their current focus is on 1. Kalahari Copper Belt (KCB, 4 PLs covering 2,481.4km2 near Namibian border), 2. Kalahari Suture Zone (KSZ 14 100%-owned Prospecting Licences totalling 9,306km2), and 3. Ditau Project (4 prospecting licences covering 2,653km2). Tiyapo identified their plans for Q3-Q4 2023, including their environment and community objectives, concluding with their strong commitment to Botswana, Kavango Minerals is opening up exploration in new areas, utilising new advanced technology and geophysical techniques.
Bringing the Africa Mining Summit’s plenary sessions to a close, AMS2023 Conference Chair, Jacob Thamage, Coordinator of the Diamond Hub – Botswana, together with PNYX’s Managing Director, Andrew Dowell, took to the stage for Thanks & Recognition. Jacob offered his sincere

Nchakha Moloi spoke on Motjoli Iron Ore Company’s Transition from Exploration to Mining - Built for Resilience, opening with details of the Motjoli Group’s structure, Motjoli Resources being a private 100% black owned junior mining and exploration company founded in 2004, owning 100% of the Motjoli Iron Ore Company. He identified three projection locations namely Phaphama, Meletse, and the Cascade, identifying their development milestones and challenges over the past 16 years. Nchakha shared a detailed overview of the three sites, from location, geology, and exploration to layout, establishment, trial mining, logistics, and social interests. James Allan followed with his presentation on Survival is the new definition of success - Lessons from a junior. He shared a very candid and enlightening view of his experiences over the past two decades, detailing the struggles they have faced and ultimately overcome, after much sacrifice, perseverance and tenacity Sable Exploration and Mining are now on the road to success. He gave examples of their previous platinum transaction in 2006, Selebi Phikwe in 2013, vanadium in 2014-2015, and experience with Middel East diamond resources. More recently, Sable Exploration and Mining have been able to generate funds and enter into a UJV with IPace (Pty), a JV between Ironveld Mining (Pty) Ltd and Pace SA (Pty) to build a 10,000tpm plant to produce a DMS grade magnetite product for coal washing, with the first sales expected in November. Be prepared to sacrifice along the way, you must have resilience and tenacity, above all else keep going, perseverance and tenacity will win in the end!

CONFERENCE AGENDA 9:10 - 10:10
SESSION 1: DIAMONDS
Botswana has long been a beacon for both diamonds and Africa: it’s a model of sustainable and ethical diamond mining and it remains one of the top mining destinations in the world chiefly as a result of its strong governance. Is the updated deal between the GRB and De Beers genuinely transformational for the diamond industry, Botswana and De Beers? The Debswana mines are in the second half of their lives where margins will begin to decrease and Botswana remains, to a large extent, chiefly reliant on diamond revenues. The updated deal talks to increased goods flowing through ODC, more local beneficiation and a fund to help decrease Botswana’s reliance on diamonds, amongst other important items. The deal also talks about joint (and own by the GRB) exploration efforts, both in Botswana and elsewhere to replenish existing diamond resources. Panel Chair: James Campbell, Managing Director of Botswana Diamonds plc Bakani Motlhabani, Executive Head of Technology & Technical Services of Debswana Johane Mchive, Karowe Mine General Manager of Lucara Botswana Dr Leon Daniels, Director of Pangolin Diamonds Mmetla Masire, Managing Director of Okavango Diamond Company Omogolo “Bonjo” Mathumo, Director HB Botswana’ of HB Antwerp

Exporien Mining P/L has interests in gold claims and coal bed methane gas (CBM) concessions. The gold claims are located in the Shurugwi district in the southern parts of Zimbabwe. The company’s coal bed methane gas concessions are located in the Midlands and Matabeleland North provinces of Zimbabwe. However the Company’s CBM tenaments currently stand withdrawn by the state. This withdrawal was done without following due procedure and hence the company is seeking legal remedy to challenge this decision. The company has undertaken quite extensive desktop studies which include remote sensing studies on both the gold claims and CBM concessions. The depressed investment appetite for Zimbabwe projects has delayed significant progress in developing these assets as the company seeks funding and technical partners with capacity to turn these tenements into producing assets. Exporien Mining has confidence in the perspectivity of its assets based on the studies carried out to date. Exporien Mining has had a number of companies out of South Africa, Europe and Australia express interest in its assets but these companies remain on the peripheries watching developments in the perceived risk associated with FDI into Zimbabwe.
