Ranger Kids Explore Washington’s Birthplace

R

anger Kids enjoyed a day of learning and play on the beautiful grounds of George Washington’s boyhood home during Central Section’s Ranger Kids Field Day on April 30. Altogether, nearly 40 Rangers, siblings, parents and commanders representing a half-dozen outposts in the section attended the field day at Ferry Farm in Fredericksburg. The group toured the grounds under the tutelage of Ryan McCarty, museum education coordinator with the George Washington Foundation, who provided a guided walking tour of the farm property and nature activities for the children. Other highlights of the day included a pizza and fruit lunch, and a craft activity coordinated by Outpost 48 Ranger parent Lisa Wearsch in which the youngsters hand painted wooden animal figures. Wood chip toss, horseshoes, miniature golf, tin can rubber band shoot, and tug ‘o war comprised a full schedule of field sporting events organized

by Cmdr. Henry Melson from Outpost 232. The day was rounded out by a rousing sing-along led by the section’s Ranger Kid Coordinator Keith Meeder, and a devotional story and skit on “The Miraculous Catch” orchestrated by Ben and Linda Newman with Outpost 215.

This particular challenge pitted similarly hooded contestants, equipped with foam noodles, against each other to see who would be the last Ranger standing with his egg still imtact on his head.

The event drew a an estimated crowd of over 200 Rangers, leaders and family members. Races were conducted on two tracks, both equipped with electronic start and finish gates that permitted all race times to be recorded to the thousandth of a second. Trophies were presented to the first through sixth place winners in each race division. Boys raced in their Ranger age groups. The remaining divisions included one for Commanders and another for Missionettes and family members. Ribbons were awarded for best workmanship. And a radiocontrolled model car grand prize went to Adventure Ranger Chris Seabaugh from Outpost 31 whose pinewood car had the fastest single race time recorded for the day. Photo by Cecil Webb

‘Soldiers of the Cross’ take Pow Wow by Storm

O

ver 150 Rangers, commanders and visitors representing 14 outposts participated in this year’s Central Section Pow Wow held May 19-22 at Highland Retreat in Bergton, Va. Themed “A Soldier of the Cross,” Rangers and commanders were challenged to be faithful to serving Jesus Christ as committed and disciplined followers, starting with devotionals shared by former U.S. Army Ranger Brian McCroskey, and continuing with sermons by Navy Lt. Paul Eley, also a Royal Ranger commander for Outpost 48. A colorful addition to this year’s event were outpost standards that characterized the Pow Wow theme and were carried by Rangers to all events.

A lashed chariot “joust,” a challenging obstacle course, and “Minute to Win It” challenge for commanders (clockwise from left) were among the new features at this year’s Pow Wow. Photos by Cecil Webb
