Reading through this Year in Review, one thing stands out: Australian industry is perfectly positioned to seize the unquestionable competitive advantage that flows from supply chain superiority.

Why? Because all the foundations are there. We have decades of experience with the GS1 System, one of the world’s most active data synchronisation communities in EANnet®, a progressive attitude towards new technology and, best of all, a richly diverse membership base. Since any supply chain is fundamentally a set of connections, that’s an invaluable asset.

This review illustrates our readiness to take a leading role. On the global stage, the demand for the knowledge of GS1 Australia experts, our members’ experience with leading-edge technology and Maria’s election to the global GS1 Management Board mean that, more than ever, Australians are shaping the very fabric of international trade.

This year Maria Palazzolo was elected onto the global GS1 Board and many other Australians continue to take prominent places in the development of data synchronisation, Electronic Product Code™ (EPC), Global Standards Management Processes (GSMP), international traceability pilots and a plethora of other GS1 projects – all in defiance of time zones, midnight conference calls and marathon flights.

The extraordinary performance of the GS1 Australia community is used as a global benchmark. And the secret to your successes? I believe GS1 Australia distinguishes itself by embodying the spirit of collaboration that underpins the GS1 philosophy. The ability of you and your members to work together to See One Vision, Speak with One Voice and Act as One Organisation will deliver ever richer rewards.

At home, Australians continue to break new ground. Maria Palazzolo Chief Executive Officer Heading GS1 Australia, Maria encourages leadership and collaboration in supply chain development. She has a unique appreciation of how GS1 can change the way an entire nation does business and her expertise in the field of standards development is underscored by a wide range of industry experience.

Mark Fuller Chief Operations Officer & Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mark draws on extensive experience in the manufacturing and ICT sectors to manage day-to-day operations and the development of GS1 Australia’s products and services. He also actively collaborates with industry associations, government and the GS1 Alliance Partner community.

Steven Pereira Chief Information Officer Steven is responsible for GS1 Australia’s business systems, standards and emerging technologies, and education strategies. Providing advice on EPCglobal™ standards for RFID adoption is currently integral to Steven’s role, as is his involvement in administering the RosettaNet standard within the high-tech industry. His international work in 2006 included: • GSMP Board Committee of Standards – Process Group • RosettaNet Australia Director

Colin Barnes Chief Financial Officer & Company Secretary Colin is a certified CPA with more than 15 years of CFO and company secretarial knowledge. He is responsible for GS1 Australia’s business support services. These include the management of legal aspects, risk management, asset management, member administration, and finance.

His team provides essential business services such as accounts, credit control, office administration and payroll.

Sue Schmid General Manager – Member & Industry Support Sue and her team help members, whether as individual businesses or entire industries, to leverage the GS1 System and boost business performance. The Member & Industry Support team is actively involved in new member support, help desk activities, implementation support and site visits, multi-partner pilot programs, and industry-led working groups.

Sue participates in a broad spectrum of international interest groups.

Among them in 2006 were: • Interest groups for traceability, transport and logistics, defence and health • HUG GTIN Allocation Rules Working Group and Automatic Identification Data Capture Working Group • Unique Consignment Reference pilot with the World Customs Organisation Following Fiona Wilson’s retirement, Sue has assumed the role of General Manager – Standards Development.

The flagship of the services delivered

by Richard’s team is EANnet: a rapidly expanding data synchronisation service carrying accurate information for about 100,000 products to simplify communication between suppliers and their trading partners. This is supported by a Digital Imaging service and a Quality Systems team that, in 2006, tested the compliance of over 86,000 bar codes with global GS1 standards. Richard also manages a supplier accreditation program for packaging providers.

Neale’s team meets the information and communication technology needs of both GS1 Australia’s staff and members.

Responsible for the consultancy and implementation arm of GS1 Australia, John and his team have been particularly successful in guiding many members to become EANnet Ready™ as well as implementing automatic data capture and eMessaging. John also supervises the management of Corporate Member accounts. In 2006, his international responsibilities included:

Fiona Wilson was responsible for the ongoing development and improvement of GS1 standards at an international level. The Standards Development team assists members with the use of existing standards and the introduction of new ones – most recently the EPC standards.

In 2006, Fiona’s international responsibilities included:

How we support our members

In 2006, GS1 Australia supported thousands of members with: • Expert assistance at the GS1 Australia help desk • Classroom-based and online training • On-site visits • Bar code verification testing service • Digital imaging of products during testing • EANnet data synchronisation service • Consulting and implementation support • Accredited solution providers • Access to the full range of GS1 standards • GS1 Company Prefixes, directly allocated numbers, and location numbers • Newsletters, web site, reports and case studies

In 2006, a staggering 86,876 bar codes were tested by GS1 Australia’s verification service, enabling major retailers to have confidence that point-of-sale scans are accurate and reliable.

Digital imaging In 2006, a total of 8,712 products were imaged, creating 13,295 image files or orientations.

Support whenever you call GS1 Australia delivered practical expert help to thousands of members in 2006. The help desk responded to 5,272 phone calls and emails and the Member & Industry Support team made 217 site visits. Professional Services team provided more intensive guidance for 97 projects, almost half of which involved EANnet.

Education & Training

EANnet data synchronisation service

GS1 Australia’s Education & Training team support members in almost every supply chain management endeavour. In 2006, Education & Training services were more popular than ever with members:

As Australian business reaches for more accurate and automated transactions, the demand for the EANnet data synchronisation service has surged. In the 12 months to December 2006, the number of EANnet Ready suppliers almost doubled, EANnet Live Coles supplier numbers leapt from 150 to 416 and EANnet registered companies grew by 60 per cent.

“My director, Frank, joined GS1 Australia on the 9th June 2006 for our new product NOISELEZZ which is an anti-snoring device.

“I rang GS1 Australia to assist me with how I go about joining. My dealings were dealt with great professionalism and I felt I had all the answers to my questions. Then I received a GS1 package by post and thought that this would be my last dealing with GS1 as most organisations treat you like a number.

To my disbelief I then received a personal telephone call by a pleasant and friendly lady by the name of Melanie. Melanie not only rang to ensure I had received my package but also to highlight the services and benefits the GS1 System can provide, as well as to help me implement the bar code numbers and bar codes.

Health The healthcare sector has perhaps more to gain from the use of the GS1 System than any other because the accuracy and speed it brings to the supply chain delivers the right medicines and medical devices to patients, when and where they are needed. This year, three projects saw the GS1 System become the platform for safer and more efficient distribution of vital health products.

The National Product Catalogue (NPC) and the Australian Catalogue of Medicines (ACOM) Hosted on EANnet, the NPC is being rolled out by the National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA) in association with GS1 Australia. Endorsed by all state, territory and federal health departments, it replaces scores of databases currently maintained by individual hospitals to become Australia’s central data source for all items procured by the public healthcare sector.

The NPC will also incorporate the ACOM to provide standardised and accurate medical data for prescription and non-prescription medicines, including complementary health care products. The NPC is expected to lift data quality and generate savings of around $200 million annually after data upload is completed in mid 2007.

The Monash Project Following its success in 2005, the Monash Project, a pilot of an automated eCommerce supply chain in the hospital pharmaceutical sector, proceeded to a self-funded Phase 2 in 2006.

Phase 1 showed faster and more accurate receipt of deliveries, while a pharmaceutical manufacturer demonstrated the process needed to ensure that products were marked with GS1 bar codes at all levels of packaging. Phase 2 deals with the use of EANCOM electronic purchase orders, purchase order acknowledgements and dispatch advice messages.

Participants include Abbott, Baxter, Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceuticals, Health Purchasing Victoria, Mayne, Clifford Hallam Healthcare (CH2), Orion, Pfizer, Southern Health and Symbion – along with their trading partners.

GS1 Australia 2006 year in review

The GS1 Healthcare User Group (HUG) Australasia October 2006 saw the first meeting of the GS1 HUG Australasia. The team will work to enhance patient safety using automatic product identification in concert with the Global HUG. This project involves many of the world’s largest healthcare retailers, hospitals, pharmacy chains, distributors and manufacturers such as 3M, B. Braun, Baxter, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, and Wyeth.

Meat The GS1 System could well be the answer for meat exporters frustrated by costly paperwork and ineffective product identification methods.

A Meat Transfer Certificate (MTC) must currently be completed every time meat destined for export is transferred – a labour-intensive process estimated to cost around $20 per certificate.

An electronic version of the MTC, aptly named the eMTC, was developed

by Meat & Livestock Australia with the assistance of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS), GS1 Australia and the industry during 2006. It is expected to reduce the cost of producing a certificate to less than one dollar, saving the meat and livestock industry an estimated $2.3 million per annum.

The eMTC, which is based on the GS1 EANCOM electronic messaging standards, has been trialled in the field and AQIS plans to release it for industry-wide use in 2007.

Similarly, the GS1 System is set to smooth the export of meat to the United States (US). The port marks mandated by US authorities regularly become illegible during shipping which is the number one reason why Australian meat is rejected at US ports.

The remedy is also costly and timeconsuming, with Australian officials required to oversee the reapplication of smudged or obliterated marks.

During 2006, Meat & Livestock Australia worked with the US Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to replace the port marks with bar codes and eMessaging.

Successful trials prompted the formation of a committee to review all US listed companies to check their ability to receive GS1 coded meat from Australia.

Transport and Logistics A linchpin in any supply chain and a burgeoning industry estimated at 57 billion in its own right, the nation’s transport and logistics industry supports Australia’s economic performance. It currently contributes an estimated 15 per cent of the nation’s gross domestic product.

In 2006, this important industry took a significant step towards broadscale use of the GS1 System with the launch of the Transport & Logistics Working Group following the landmark ITOL pilot of 2005 (the results of which were released in March 2006). The group’s launch coincided with a road show to publicise the benefits of the GS1 System and the release of case studies showing how transport businesses stood to gain from its implementation.

Toll Logistics partnered with Kimberly-Clark Australia to show how eMessaging, based on the GS1 standards, supports a quantum leap in time and administration savings, while Patties Foods released the results of its EPC trial at the Impetus Conference.

At an international level, GS1 Australia is taking part in a pilot running between Australia and the United Kingdom (UK) that aims to demonstrate the use of the Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) as the Unique Consignment Reference (UCR) number in line with the World Customs Organisation UCR recommendation.

Called the SSCC – UCR Pilot, it will promote safe and secure borders, and provide customs authorities with information about the flow of goods in the international supply chain while improving post transaction audit and cargo reconciliation. The final pilot report will be presented to the World Customs Organisation in June 2007.

Participants include the Australian Customs Service, Australian Wine & Brandy Corporation, Australian Wine Federation, Constellation Europe, Diageo, Flexible Logistics Services (TOD Group), GS1 Global Office, GS1 Australia, GS1 UK, Hardys Wine Co, HM Revenue and Customs (UK), Trans Ocean Distribution (TOD Group), Wine and Spirits Trade Association, and the World Customs Organisation.

Electrical Appliances Applie-com, the Australian appliance industry eCommerce group, reformed in 2006 to encourage the uptake of eCommerce.

By June, NSW electrical goods retailer Bing Lee reported that about 80 per cent of suppliers were using electronic messaging.

Applie-com, in conjunction with GS1 Australia and GS1 New Zealand, is currently conducting a pilot involving suppliers and retailers from both sides of the Tasman.

The objective is to ensure that the soon to be released GS1net is capable of supporting data requirements within the appliance retailing sector and to demonstrate the benefits of this form of data synchronisation.

The group plans to release an industry call to action, based on pilot results, in June 2007.

Applie-com members include Betta Stores, Breville, Electrolux Home Products, Fisher & Paykel, GS1 Australia, Harvey Norman, Informark, Myer, National Associated Retail Traders of Australia (NARTA), Panasonic, Philips, Retravision, Samsung, Sony, Sunbeam, The Good Guys and Whirlpool.

Fresh Produce An open letter to the fresh produce industry from the Australian Produce Identification Committee (Aus-PIC) urging the adoption of the GS1 System to improve traceability flagged a turning point for the industry.

The call to action followed an earlier announcement from Woolworths that it would scan pallets of fresh produce at its distribution centres. The response from the industry has been swift. GS1 Australia provided technical support to more than 250 fresh produce suppliers in 2005/06, advising on the correct application of the GS1 logistics label to meet the needs of Woolworths and other trading partners.

In a bid to expedite the implementation of GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs), GS1 Australia also managed the allocation of generic GTINs for non-retail trade units of loose fruit and vegetables. GS1 Australia will work towards grower and vendor allocation by 2009.

Acknowledging GS1 champions

GS1 Australia presents annual awards to companies and individuals committed to best practice implementation of the GS1 System.

At GS1 Australia’s Impetus 2006 conference and expo, Australian Country Choice (ACC) received the Award for Standards in Action while Woolworths’ Daniel Kochanowicz won the prestigious Leadership in Standards Award.

A catalyst for change, ACC is one of the world’s most innovative meat production and processing companies.

The individual award winner, Daniel Kochanowicz, has a notable history of leadership in supply chain management that extends far beyond his role as Woolworths Business Development Manager eBusiness.

ACC first piloted GS1 standards more than six years ago, trialling EDI using EANCOM for retail ordering, back to retail/shelf ready meat manufacturing, and cold chain distribution.

More recently, ACC commissioned Queensland’s first modified atmosphere fresh meat packing facility, complete with robotics and RFID technology.

Accepting the award, ACC CEO David Foote acknowledged the contribution of colleagues, Fred Vionel and Paul Gibson, and went on to say the GS1 System had an important role to play in the meat industry.

“Traceability across and along the supply chain is no longer just a feel good or target – it’s a business imperative,” he said.

“Incorporation and implementation of GS1 System bar codes and EPC/RFID standards, alongside DNA capture technologies, provide a solid platform for food safety outcomes and business management from logistics to production, to inventory management and management of reporting.”

It would be difficult to find an individual outside of GS1 more committed to championing the benefits of global standards for the organisation and industry in which he works.

Among Mr Kochanowicz’s achievements is the development of standards for use-by dates and ‘out of case’ marking, critical for product traceability.

Mr Kochanowicz also co-chairs the Global Standards Management Process Bar Codes & Identification Business Requirements Group, and is an active member of the Global Users Leadership Group – both demanding regular international teleconferences that occur between 11pm and 3am.

GS1 Australia 2006 year in review

Scholarships for formal supply chain studies A 2006 study jointly conducted by GS1 Australia and Monash University identified the increasingly important role that industry associations such as GS1 Australia and academia play in developing the supply chain professionals of the future.

Supply chain management is only now emerging as a discipline within Australia’s universities and, with more businesses looking to foreign markets in their effort to grow in a highly competitive environment, well trained supply chain professionals will become even more vital.

To make post-graduate supply chain education more accessible, GS1 Australia sponsored two half-scholarships to study the Graduate Certificate of Information Systems at Deakin University in 2006.

The winners were Angela Reid of Unique Micro Design and Luke Merlo of Rip Curl Australia.

Inspired by their experiences, both Ms Reid and Mr Merlo are pursuing Masters in Information Systems.

As part of the GS1 Global Office Marketing Network Group and working in collaboration with GS1 Global Office and other Member Organisations, we pooled our resources to great effect, sharing templates, information and resources.

Tactics spanned almost all media types to connect with members, industries, associations, governments and authorities. Some of the highlights follow.

Advertising: Leveraging a trusted brand, building a new one With the re-branding of GS1 Australia (from EAN Australia) came the need for a new advertising and direct marketing approach. The three-part campaign carried our core message to build brand awareness and reinforce the organisation’s positioning as approachable, helpful and useful.

So successful was the campaign that it is now a GS1 best-practice template that is being rolled out by other GS1 Member Organisations around the world.

Business Logistics – A Special Advertising Report Dated Wednesday, 19 July 2006, this six-page report had a circulation of 133,926 and appeared a week before the Impetus 2006 conference and expo. The articles were all written by The Australian and included information and quotes from GS1 Australia, GS1 members and Alliance Partners.

Publicity: Making the headlines GS1 Australia was big news in 2006.

We made headlines for everything from business case studies through to expert opinions on EPC/RFID. Online: A communications powerhouse The GS1 Australia web site received an astonishing 190,000 hits on average per month in 2006, making it one of our most powerful communication vehicles.

Traffic to the site has increased since an optimisation project in 2006 and reflects our leadership in GS1 standards and allied technology. The site is now ranked number one by Google for Australian searches and number three for worldwide searches.

The www.gs1au.org site contains a virtual treasure trove of information for members since its redesign in 2006.

Benefits include: • Downloadable forms, brochures and fact sheets • Membership information • Information and online registration for events • Payment online • Latest news and industry updates • Check Digit Calculator • Easy access to solution providers via a searchable directory • Easily accessible information available 24 hours a day • Helpful service offerings for GS1 System implementation

Events: A first-hand experience Engaging with industry at events proved particularly successful for GS1 Australia, which participated in CeBIT Australia, the Retail Technology Expo, AUSPACK, the Australian Food & Grocery Council Conference, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Meat Committee Event.

GS1 Australia’s own Impetus 2006 two-day conference and expo also brought members together in Melbourne. The event attracted over 480 attendees, with 37 presenters and 25 exhibitors, and generated 29 articles in trade press and national newspapers.

The GS1 Australia philosophy of working together to make a difference extends far beyond the boardroom into the community.

CEO, Maria Palazzolo, leads by example, accepting an invitation to join the Starlight Children’s Foundation Victorian Advisory Board in 2006. In fact, many GS1 Australia staff members are involved in fundraisers or regularly donate their time to this charity to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families.

Making a difference to our community

That spirit of compassion was alive and well in Christmas 2006, when our staff members opted to forgo the traditional staff Kris Kringle to donate gifts to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation in support of their Christmas Giving Program.

This sense of obligation continues at a very pragmatic level too. Goods sent in for bar code testing that are not required to be returned are routinely donated to charities as diverse as the Save a Dog Scheme and the Leukaemia Foundation.

GS1 Australia’s everyday commitment to helping local businesses flourish was recognised in 2006 by a Monash Business Excellence Award. Our training and support have enabled many of the more than 400 GS1 Australia members within the Monash business community to compete successfully in the global trading community.

2007: Looking forward

Data accuracy builds solid foundations Because accurate, up-to-date data is the foundation of all eCommerce, data synchronisation between trading partners is fundamental to the performance of faster and more efficient supply chain technologies.

In Australia, data synchronisation has been achieved using EANnet for a network of some 1,200 suppliers and many of the country’s biggest retailers.

The migration from EANnet to GS1net in 2007 will allow the Australasian data pool to share data with more than 20 similar international communities through the GDSN. On the agenda Progress during 2007 will include the: • Commissioning of GS1net in late August 2007 • Launch of a data validation service in 2007 to enhance data quality • Launch of a data quality service in 2007 in collaboration with the Efficient Consumer Response Australasia Data Quality Workgroup • Migration of all EANnet members to GS1net by June 2008

Members will be supported throughout the transition and beyond with training programs, user group activities and direct assistance from the GS1net Client Services team.

What it means for members Migration to the GDSN-compliant GS1net provides Australian organisations with access to an automated, standards-based global environment that enables secure and continuous data synchronisation.

Trading partners in any industry and in any location enjoy consistent item data in their systems. It also improves supply chain management by removing the duplication of systems and processes.

RFID and the Electronic Product Code (EPC) come to life EPCglobal is the GS1 body for EPC standards and the EPC Network that supports the use of radio frequency identification technology. There are already more than 1,000 member companies involved with EPCglobal, including 40 Australian businesses such as Brambles/CHEP, Visy and Supercheap Auto.

Australian industry, which has not yet received a mandate to implement the technology, has instead led with pilots exploring the value of best-practice implementation. GS1 Australia has been instrumental in these pilots and, during 2006, continued testing aimed at achieving regulatory change allowing 4 Watt services.

On the agenda GS1 Australia will continue to take a guiding role in EPC trials and garnering the support of government, specifically: • Surveying Australian Industry to identify needs, opportunities and issues around adoption of EPC/RFID • Proceeding with the National Demonstrator Project Extension to build the business case for EPC/RFID usage. Results will be released at the SMART 2007 conference in June 2007

• The RFID in Retail Consumer Privacy Code of Practice. Currently in draft format, this code aims to protect the interests of consumers during the operation of RFID networks, including the EPC Network. The final code is due for release in July 2007 following public comment • The EPC/RFID Australian Advisory Group. Formed in November 2006, this group of business leaders from across industries aims to set the direction of EPC/RFID usage in Australian industry, leverage overseas experience, implement pilots, share information, and participate in global standards development to ensure solutions meet Australian requirements • Facilitating the EPC/RFID Technology Group so solution providers may assist delivery of the advisory group agenda • Participating in EPCglobal industry development initiatives, including the GS1 Global Account Management Program What it means for members EPCglobal members involved in the advisory group and trials will benefit from the insights that first-hand experience brings. For the broader GS1 Australia community, the outcomes of these trials will be shared in newsletters, white papers and online, promoting a greater understanding of RFID’s real-world capabilities.

GS1 Australia 2006 year in review

Working towards 2010 and the Reduced Space Symbology (RSS) Sunrise The RSS bar code, renamed GS1 DataBar in February 2007, encapsulates more information than standard bar codes in half the space. An international timeframe requires all scanning systems to read RSS codes by January 2010.

On the agenda The sunrise date for RSS should see retailers reassessing their point-of-sale equipment over the next three years. GS1 Australia will support this with the formation of industry groups to oversee the adoption of RSS. What it means for members Because the RSS bar codes can incorporate batch numbers and use-by dates, their introduction will allow more efficient product recalls and tracking, while the more compact format allows its use on small items such as medicines and fresh produce.

Training made more accessible Staying up-to-date with the latest supply chain innovations is critical to most business operations but finding the right time and place for training is a challenge, as a 2006 Monash University survey identified.

GS1 Australia has responded by offering more leading-edge and targeted classroom sessions, a new online course and a one-hour webinar training session for new members.

On the agenda In 2007, GS1 Australia’s Education & Training experts will: • Continue to promote the online LEARN classroom • Encourage all new members to take advantage of the webinar sessions and, when team members are available, attend the classroom sessions • Engage members in higher levels of learning, particularly as they adopt new technologies (such as EDI, XML and EPC) by subscribing to the 101 Knowledge Series

What it means for members Flexible, convenient, self-paced and affordable, the GS1 Australia training programs represent a smarter way to learn about the supply chain.

Extending far beyond the walls of GS1 Australia’s award-winning Supply Chain Knowledge Centres to cyberspace itself, training is as close as any member’s computer and available whenever they are.

Retailers gain greater visibility

Helping manufacturers drive change

The retail sector has long been considered the home of the bar code but ironically, many retailers are yet to discover the full benefits of the GS1 System for their businesses and for their relationships with trading partners.

Consumer packaged goods supply chains certainly do not begin with manufacturers, yet efficient supply chain practices often extend only from manufacturer to retailer – leaving many manufacturers without the benefit of accurate, cost-effective data from their own suppliers.

On the agenda Technologies including EPC/RFID, data synchronisation and eMessage validation, will be the catalysts for retailers to become active participants in the GS1 System.

The year 2007 will see the formation of a number of industry groups in the retail sector, capitalising on the power of collaboration.

What it means for members In the past, many retailers have been passive recipients of information from suppliers but the escalation of eCommerce promises to make business transactions richer and more dynamic. For retailers, this presents tremendous opportunities for lower error rates, costs and a competitive marketing edge with consumers.

GS1 and the Global Commerce Initiative (GCI) have developed an Upstream Integration Model with Extend Standards designed for the specific needs of upstream suppliers of ingredients, raw materials and packaging.

On the agenda GS1 Australia has developed a proposal based on the proven GCI and GS1 Upstream Integration Model.

Together, GS1 and the Australian Food & Grocery Council will establish an Upstream Supplier Project in 2007 to implement the GS1 proposal with the support of all major retailers and suppliers.

What it means for members For manufacturers, the benefits include improved service, reduced inventories and lower administration, production and transportation costs. These are benefits for those downstream, too, as eCommerce moves upstream, compounded costs are removed by the time goods are sold over the counter.
