A HOUSE THAT CELEBRATES ART, TECHNOLOGY… AND STANDARDS Standards, art and technology: this is the DNA of our new house, at the Innovation and Competitiveness Centre. The realization of this building with an iconic and disruptive façade by the artist of the moment, Alexandre Farto (a.k.a Vhils), reflects the realization of this board’s dream and commitment to “cooperate and share” with the GS1 Portugal’s nearly eight thousand members stakeholders.
T
o the talent, irreverence, deepness and consistence of Vhils work (as well as to the Promontório and Tétris enthusiasm and professionalism) we wanted to join and materialize in the same space what makes us unique: ingenuity, innovation and diversity. Inaugurated on November 14th 2016 by a GS1 Portugal’s old friend, the President of the Portuguese Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, our new head office, at Campus do Lumiar, is the “In Focus” theme of this Código 560 28th edition. A modern, disruptive and functional space that is, at the same time, un interpretative centre that shows Standards GS1 “in living colors”, dynamically and interactively, working as a centre to promote innovation, technology and national and international Best Practices. As a centre of knowledge and interpretation of the efficiency of value chains, foreseeing trends and supporting business efficiency, designed to respond to the needs of a demanding, automatic and global market, it is also a pleasant, spacious and functional office, that houses a multidisciplinary and strongly expanding team. Therefore, I take the opportunity to once again invite you to visit our new head office and Innovation and Competitiveness Centre, interacting live and global standards. This house is yours. Adopting global standards in healthcare and the Hospital of Cascais business case are recurring themes for us. A 100% Portuguese pilot project, developed by GS1 Portugal with a medical facility in Cascais, a unit of the Lusíadas Saúde Group. We do it to maintain the goal to replicate in healthcare, in Portugal, the traceability experience gathered along more than 40 years in the consumer goods sector. On the other hand, reflecting the comprehensive areas of a multisector organization such as ours, this Código 560 edition presents various current events and themes of interest of our members. For this reason, we invite you to go back to the III GS1 Portugal Congress - “Winning the future value chain together”, an event on cooperative efficiency that took place last October 20th, at Oriente Museum. We have more news: The Ministry of Economy’s new exhibition - Espaço 560 - is opened to all who want to know the most innovative and technological creations made in Portugal. WELCOME TO GS1 PORTUGAL’S NEW HOUSE Art, standards and innovation gathered in one place. That´s the GS1 Portugal’s new building, joining a head office, a centre of innovations and a piece of art. The Innovation and Competitiveness Centre A venue where it’s possible to see GS1 Standards in living colors. The Innovation and Competitiveness Centre allows an interactive and educational tour through the value chains “From the farm to the plate”. It takes up almost all the ground floor and it’s open to the members and the public at large.
New Head Office Since October 31st 2016, GS1 Portugal’s team is occupying the first floor of the new building. A space that combines four open spaces, eight offices and three meeting rooms. The new head office also has two training rooms and a rooftop, available to outside entities.

t’s not new. On the contrary. It is a project that was born in 2014 and over the last two years it has been considered to detail. The outcome? An iconic, disruptive, modern and innovative building that holds the new head office and shows the world a new experience inside the value chains in a technological and interactive venue: The Innovation and Competitiveness Centre. The new GS1 Portugal head office opened its doors in the last quarter of 2016 - precisely on October 31st. A day that sets the beginning of a new era for the organization. An era where GS1 Portugal’s home is also the home of the members and of all of those who wish to know - in living colors - the action and benefits of the most widely used standard system in the world: the GS1 system. Inauguration To mark the moment in the association’s history, that’s been active in the country for 31 years, GS1 Portugal was honored by the presence of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to unveil the inaugural plaque and congratulate
the organization for the work done in the past, in an inspiring and motivational speech. The ceremony unfolded on November 14th in the presence of members, stakeholders and representatives of governmental entities. With the doors opened to the public, the Innovation and Competitiveness Centre, on the ground floor, offers an interactive, educative and immersive visit to the world of GS1 Standards. In the words of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this project represents “a slot of innovation” and it brings an important “educative and proximity component to the academia.” The new GS1 Portugal head office is also “a dream come true” says Paulo Gomes, GS1 Portugal’s president. In the next weeks, travel with us, from dream to reality, and discover the dimensions of the building: The Innovation and Competitiveness Centre, the artwork and the head office. AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE INTO THE WORLD OF GS1 STANDARDS Standards, innovation and technology. This is the combination that gives raise to the Innovation and Competitiveness Centre. A space where GS1 system comes to life through six interactive, educational and innovative modules. The tour is about to begin.
T
he access to the Innovation and Competitiveness Centre is made through the front door of the building. Anyone who comes in, feels that this building is more than a head office: the screens, the models and the logistic simulations leave no doubt. Into the lobby and the greeting room, the visit begins. A guide comes to us and starts to: (1) Present the Innovation and Competitiveness Centre. What is GS1 Portugal? What does it do? Why was this venue built? These are some of the questions answered in the first module, exactly at the center of the building. A first impressive moment, also because of the hologram, a product of cuttingedge technology. Knowing the origin of GS1 and the purpose of the new building, we move forward to: (2) Thinking about the benefits of GS1 Standards on everyone’s daily life. This second moment, such as impressive, is an 170º electronic “wall”, with eighteen screens (video wall). An immersive experience through the backstage of value chains. Here we can understand how all of us, common consumers, connect with GS1 Standards. The story is simple: a character that

The tour of the Innovation and Competitiveness Centre goes through six interactive, educational and innovative modules throughout the day consumes products and goes to places that use GS1 Standards to improve the efficiency of businesses and people’s lives every day. We get to the interactive modules where, in an educational, simple and intuitive way, we can decode
business global language. It all starts with (3) Create a barcode. With double touch screen table, this module allows visitors to create a code in the different hierarchy levels of a product (unity, box, pallet). In the end, they can also print and apply those codes. Now the goods are ready to (4) Move. This is the next module, an exercise that joins the different means of transport, including an electric train for demonstrating the RFID technology. This is just one of

the three interactive exercises of this station, where you can understand transports in an
integrated form and how GS1 Standards are present in every expedition moment of any item
- from retail to healthcare. Every expedition has a recipient, so any value chain must: (5) Deliver the package, in this case to business partners. That is the reason for being of this module, where you can understand the logistics and management of merchandise in storage in the multiple activity sectors. Finally, in the B2B2C perspective, the visit ends with (6) Consume. A module, recognized by all of us, that reproduces the supermarket or the pharmacy shelf, where we find GS1 Standards in the improvement of efficiency on businesses and people’s lives. The artist vision
“FACES AND GLANCES BETWEEN LAYERS OF NOISE” Vhils got to work to put a face on the new head office. The result is a facade where “the contraposition of information chaos symbolizes the contemporary world and the reality worked by GS1 Portugal”
H
e was one of the three portuguese young talents highlighted by Forbes magazine due to the success of his career. His art is spread around 50 countries. And he his Portuguese. We are talking about Alexandre Farto, or Vhils, his signature. A young man that gained worldwide recognition through deconstructive art, that behind “glances” holds a reflection on contemporary urban societies. GS1 Portugal and the team responsible for the project of the new head office launched the challenge. And Alexandre didn’t hesitate. The result? A facade where “the contraposition to the chaos of information symbolizes the contemporary world and the reality

worked by GS1 Portugal”. To create through destructive processes is the focus of Vhils work. What made you accept the challenge to create by the means of a construction? That has been my work’s main core, but I have also developed, in contrast, some body of work based on constructive techniques, in materials like polystyrene and cork, as well as some experiences with bitumen modelling. This invitation allowed me to improve this technique, that I had been trying to develop for some years, but I still hadn’t had an important opportunity like this one to execute it. Throughout your career, you had some important moments that
pointed to the path you followed: the first sculpted wall, the first solo exhibition. Is this first “built work” going to be part of those moments? As I’ve mentioned, this is a path that I’ve been thinking about following for a long time, without distorting or interrupting the work that brought me here. This piece represents several milestones, both personal and artistic and, in that way, it belongs to the moments you’re referring to. I’ve always been interested in the crossing of languages and concepts, as well as breaking barriers, and this is, undoubtedly, a path to follow. The new GS1 Portugal headquarters was called innovative, disruptive and iconic by the President. What does this work mean to you and

what can people who still haven’t visit it, expect? The work joins several concepts, mixing references from my language and from the themes it involves and also with the GS1 universe. Therefore, it represents a reflection on the information chaos and the visual noise of this world we live in, questioning how it affects us, underlined by the faces and glances that hide and are revealed between the layers of noise. In this piece, I tried to work with these references, as the act of coding and decoding, the act of deconstruction to create codes that organize, analyze, work the efficiency, build and destroy images, organize the chaos, offers what we want, etc… including the good and the bad, the positive and the negative. Just as the building’s architecture, the art work offers 2 different readings, depending of the point of view we take to look at it. The faces are a trait that defines your work. Why? And why did you use them in this particular facade? The use of the portrait is connected to the matter of identity that I have been exploring in my work, especially the interdependent relation that it has with its environment, as well as its development and the way it is affected by several unifying factors from contemporary urban societies. Conceptually, it’s due
to the idea that every individual is shaped by a process of experiences accumulation, exactly like overlapping layers. The walls also represent a similar reality and working on them brings the symbolic notion that as time goes by we replace the new with the old without a fundamental reflection on the need to do it. The human face is also an extremely expressive support and the one that best shows the human condition in it’s essential way. For this reason, I think it is very interesting, specially what makes it: the layers, the personal stories it reflects as well as the city it also reflects, and the relation with our identity. In this particular case, it offers a counter position to the information chaos in the artwork that symbolizes the contemporary world and the reality worked by GS1 Portugal.
Architects, Lindo Serviço, Tétris and Mota-Engil. I think that proves that interdisciplinary relations and building bridges, wherever they come, has the power to make a difference.
What does this piece of art offers the city of Lisbon? I hope that, first, it helps this space to be more pleasant, the building and also its surroundings. I would also like it to highlight how important the dialogue with subcultures is to the future of the city, the country, of innovation and economy. The dialogue between the several structures and teams is very important here, and that is one of the most relevant things to communicate. Five different teams were involved in the production of this outdoor artwork - my team, Promontório
GS1 Portugal is part of a worldwide organization. This facade was a way to define its own and different identity? The work wasn’t conceived by me with the idea of differentiating the Portuguese company from its counterparties around the world, but I think that goal turned out to be achieved.
“In general, all art forms reflect life.” What is the reflection on this facade? It’s a reflection on the chaos of contemporary life and the appreciation of what’s important to hold to in this process: identity and human life. Your works context can be local, global or both, where the local is placed in a global context. In which category do you place the GS1 Portugal headquarters? It’s placed in the reflection about what is to be “Glocal”. In that sense, it questions the meaning of this local and global convergences reality, the importance of technology nowadays, the coding and decoding. It also questions the broaden decoding process that we are subduing the world to, and what it will last when everything is decoded and if we really want to get there.
In conclusion, what impact did this artwork have on you? It left a mark, undoubtedly, but it will last a while until I can see the impact it will have in future projects. Código 560 | GS1® Portugal 1st semester 2017

Three generations, three visions. What changed in the Portuguese market and economy with the creation of Delta? The Nabeiro Group – Delta Cafés has been around for 55 years and with three entrepreneurial generations and different views of the country, but with a common goal: to bring the unique quality of Delta coffees to everyone. Its activity started in Campo Maior, a little village in Alentejo, in a small warehouse and few resources. Throughout the years, the relationship between Delta and its clients became similar to the one between the man behind the counter and his every morning client: they learned together to trust and share life in the flavor and aroma of a cup of coffee. It has always been our goal to contribute to the country’s development, growth and well-being. Over the half a century of our existence we have developed new products to give an early response to the consumer’s needs, contributing, simultaneously, to the Portuguese economy. In an interview, you’ve stated you challenge you grandfather every day. What are the main differences between you and your grandfather? I challenge my grandfather but he challenges me back. But, more than challenging my grandfather every day, I try to challenge myself. In order for the business to grow we have to add value, bring new ideas, new dynamics. However, through the years I’ve been in the company I have had the unique opportunity to learn the craft from my grandfather and my father, two different persons who have allowed me to grow every day. After Delta coffee in capsules and the launch of the new Delta Q coffee machine, what other innovative dynamics is the company preparing? With over 50 years of existence, Delta Cafés is recognized as an example of pioneering spirit and innovation. Throughout Nabeiro Group’s life we have been adopting an active incremental innovation strategy, in order to elevate our products and services’ quality, and for these reasons we have a strong commitment to investigation and development. That’s why we tried to give a consistent response to the consumers needs and launched our first line of capsules, Delta Q, which is now leader in its segment. We will continue to innovate and show our consumers they can keep on trusting our

products’ quality, always looking ahead. I remember, recently, during the Web Summit, we surprised the visitors with a unique, disruptive and innovating experience of drinking coffee, with the Qoffee Qar, an autonomous self-driven robot presented during the four days of the technological summit. It was a clear opportunity to show the world the quality of our coffees and, at the same time, reinforce our entrepreneurial and innovative statement. Is e-commerce a strategic path for Delta? We have started to work in that area, where we want to be present on the daily lives of consumers and in various platforms, following the latest market trends and technological advances, adding value to the client. An example of what we have already been doing, and that has caught the attention of our clients, is the My Qoffee, a customized coffee, consumers can draw their own coffee and customize the package. After a few years of economic crisis, what is Delta’s view on the Horeca sector? And how does the company fit in it? Stability, consistency and safety are the features that industrial, commercial or services companies must achieve to have a desirable performance. After though years, we gradually begin to see improvement in the Horeca channel, still a very relevant channel. The crisis also brought renovation and innovation, and that has been felt in this sector, that, in some cases, had to reinvent itself, and did it brilliantly. On our side, we have tried to reinforce our position on retail, presenting new products, like the Origens Lot. I would also like to stress the differentiated portfolio we have been building, allowing to respond in both channels to our consumers and client’s needs, in the different consumption moments. Rui Miguel Nabeiro has presented the young leadership’s perspective to the market and the country. How do you see young businessman taking leadership and management positions? Youth is important, but so is experience. Good ideas and ambition are not enough, it’s important to know how to put them into practice. Age seems to be the less relevant factor when deciding any job, what matters is expertise; therefore, I think ability, knowledge and the willing to win are the important factors when you take over a leadership position, either in a small or big company.

“From Campo Maior to the world”, this could be Delta’s story. Do you think the company’s position reflect its roots in the region? Nabeiro Group – Delta Cafés is a human faced brand, with a commercial relationship based on “A Client, A Friend”. In its early years, Delta Cafés had to conquer the market’s trust: while gaining friends that recommended the brand we gained faithful clients, allowing the business a sustained growth. This is my grandfather’s management philosophy. Our tactic is to personalize the brand-client relationship, with each situation treated as unique and individualized in the global business. We have a constant focus on developing communities where we belong, and that shows in many ways. We have always valued our origins, our roots in Campo Maior and we intend to always help the community where we work.
Yes, we have a community commitment to encourage Campo Maior’s population and the creation of jobs in this region. It’s a way to involve the local community, adding to the social and economic development of the area. Recently, through the Nabeiro Group’s social solidarity association, Coração Delta, we signed an agreement with the Spanish Fundación Santa María la Real, that will bring to Portugal the Lanzaderas de Empleo y Emprendimiento Social (LEES) program, that aims to resolve the young unemployment problem.
Creating jobs in the area is Delta’s strategic commitment? And do you intend to keep it in the future?

logistic service rate. How would you describe the company consumer’s relationship? Delta and its clients represent one and only consumers’ value chain. We can only satisfy our clients if we satisfy our business partners. And the value chain is balanced only if it suits both parties. Therefore, we work in close collaboration with our partners, aiming at a continuous quality enhancement. And we are glad to acknowledge that our retail clients are satisfied, being aware that the relationship must be grounded on value building, not on value sharing. What initiatives and processes has Delta promoted in order to optimize its clients’ net? The clients of the so-called modern or organized distribution are what they are. It’s been the market, just by operating, that has determined the exit of retail operators and of some wholesale operators. But apparently, Portugal is back to a sharp growth process (at least, higher than the European average) on the context of the fast mover consumer goods (FMCG) and the introduction, in Portugal, of new operators of organized distribution (among which Mercadona has been the most mentioned in the media) or even electronic distribution (namely Amazon). Of course! The data normalization of the products we commercialize and its availability in electronic platforms allow the access to the information and the agility of the logistic chain as a whole. In this way, every operation, regardless of its place at the value chain to serve the same consumer, use this one and only platform instead of using multiple platforms. As a leader, what principles and world vision do you stand for and try to pass on your managers? You must take risks and bet, even if you fail – that’s how you know your success. GS1 PORTUGAL AND CASCAIS HOSPITAL WIN AN INTERNATIONAL HEALTHCARE AWARD A pioneer project developed in the private hospital sector was awarded the GS1 Healthcare Award, for the first time in Portugal.
T
he Project is not new. In 2012, after some improvements in the services and technologies at Cascais Hospital, is became necessary to standardize the processes. One of the benefits of GS1. The connection point between GS1 Portugal and Cascais Hospital was therefore found: the implementation of single codes, global on the medicines’s circuit from production to delivery to the patients. Replacing the property standards by global standards was the challenge, thus making Cascais Hospital the first private unit that used the GS1 codes and the starting point to the implementation of the GS1 system in the Healthcare sector in Portugal. In this way, GS1 Portugal and Cascais Hospital have anticipated the Directive on Falsified Medicines, aligning the hospital unit with the new regulation lines. Beyond the evident benefits – automatization, greater traceability and greater safety – the implementation of the GS1 Standards has allowed improvements in the relationships with the patients, with a greater humanization from the healthcare professionals on their contact
The use of global standards at Cascais Hospital had as main aims: (i) to assure the five patient “rights”: right patient, right drug or device, right time, right dose, right route; (ii) to maximize the processes efficiency: to analyze the cost and time reduction, the prevention of errors and the reducing of waste by the de-materialization and the automatic record; (iii) to improve the visibility along the circuit, in order to facilitate the traceability - from production to patient delivery – and the simplification of the recall and reverse logistic processes.

2016 was an exemplary year for Cascais Hospital. After it was awarded the GS1 Healthcare Award, the hospital was considered as the best – within the media dimension category – by the National Healthcare Service and as the more technological of the country by the HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. In an interview to the Código 560, Vasco Antunes Pereira, Head of the Administrative Board of Cascais Hospital, speaks about the meaning of the award and about how the implementation of GS1 System has contributed to win them. Cascais Hospital is the first Portuguese healthcare unit that wins the GS1 Healthcare Award – Best Provider Implementation Case. What meaning has this award? Cascais Hospital is proud to be the first Portuguese healthcare unit to win this prize, which is a recognition of the excellent service we already provide in all the Lusíadas Saúde units. With this implementation, we noticed an efficiency improvement, through the significate reduction on time spent by the healthcare professionals with the medicines delivery, what enables an improvement on the healthcare and on the delivery of medicines. processes like this enable a greater hospital humanization. What has motivated the change from property codes to the implementation of Standards GS1? The property codes had some limitations and we felt the need to evolve. Risk management, quality and patient safety are priorities to Lusíadas Group. The introduction of GS1 Standards was a significant step in our continuous improvement process. What were the big changes in the medicine’s circuit? The implementation of GS1 Standards has allowed us to use a unique and unequivocal data base, with all the necessary information to the management of a safe therapeutic administration process, assuring the maintenance of all medicine

Which were the main advantages of the GS1 Standards Implementation? With this mechanism, we could assure the permanent monitorization of the medicine’s delivery process, ensuring the five “rights” of therapeutic delivery: right patient, right drug or device, right time, right dose, right route; We also raised Cascais hospital’s security standards. In parallel, GS1 Standards have allowed a better stock control and a linearization of the information control processes. With the Regulation on Falsified Medicines now in force do you consider the GS1 System a tool and a solution to comply with the legal requirements and to ensure the patient the traceability of the active principle? The use of the GS1 System is an excellent allied on the “fight” against falsified medicines, in the sense that it allows the correct identification of products, batches, manufacturers and dosages. The crisis context is not yet overcome in our country, so how can hospitals give a contribution to the patient’s safety without impacting their economic sustainability? Lusíadas Group is the first private group with hospitals credited by the Joint Commission International, where Cascais Hospital is included, and this shows that we are always committed to offer the best healthcare, never forgetting the patient’s safety. Our clinical and technical teams work daily to assure that every investment represents a real benefit to the citizens we serve, and this will continue to be our focus. The patient’s security and the quality of the services we provide are pillars of the sustainability (also economic) of the healthcare unit.
Still in 2016, Cascais Hospital was considered one of the five best units of the National Healthcare Service and one of the most technological in the country. Do you think that there is room to innovation in the Portuguese healthcare sector? There is always room to innovation in the healthcare sector. We believe that the investment in technology is always an advantage and a pillar of sustainability, because its allows a qualitative growth of the sector, while at the same time it brings several benefits to the patient.

“THE NEXT YEARS WILL BE YEARS OF CHANGE FOR ALL THE EUROPEAN UNION”
Ulrike Kreysa, since 2014 in charge of the Healthcare sector at GS1 Healthcare, reflects upon the role of the organization in the Healthcare sector, a sector that will face several challenges in the next years Will there be a harmonized Europe by 2019 regarding medicines identification? What is the role of GS1 towards the sector in order to fulfil the Falsified Medicines Directive? The implementation towards the harmonised identification of drugs in February 2019 is progressing, but stakeholders need to be aware that the “clock is ticking” and two years is not a long time for the implementation across Europe. Today, the large majority of European countries already use GS1 standards to identify the drugs in their country, but most use them in linear barcodes without additional information such as expiry date, lot/batch number and especially serialisation. There are also open questions about multi-country packs, which require clarification as soon as possible. GS1 Standards like the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), as the harmonised drug identifier, and GS1 Data Matrix, as the 2D barcode, will without doubt play a major role in facilitating on time compliance with the EU Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD). In this matter, who supports the costs of implementing an unique and global system of standards? The costs of the implementation have to be paid by the respective stakeholders – that is what the FMD specifies. The costs for changes to the packaging lines, as well as the databases for authentication, have to be borne by the manufacturer, the costs for scanners and software changes at the

retail pharmacy and the hospitals have to be supported by the respective healthcare providers. Europe is expecting new regulations on identification of medical devices in 2017. What will happen? And how can GS1 inspire companies to adopt the new legislation? The new Medical Device Regulation is expected to be published in the second quarter of 2017 –and Unique Device Identification (UDI) will be part of that. Medical device companies, which sell products to the European market, will need to comply with these requirements three years after publication and GS1 will support them with implementation. As already done for the US FDA UDI rule all GS1 local Member Organisations will help their members to understand the necessary steps for compliance.
WHEN IT COMES TO CODE BARS, INFORMATION, QUALITY AND TRACEABILITY IN THE HEALTHCARE SECTOR, GS1 PLAYS A PROMINENT ROLE
In the last few years, GS1 has been intensively working in the Healthcare sector in order to evidence the benefits of GS1 Standards for all value chain. Based on your experience, how is the relationship between healthcare industry and GS1 Member Organizations? The healthcare industry is working very closely with GS1 to enable the implementation of standards. This is because they see them as beneficial for the whole sector and a way to improve patient safety and cost efficiency. In the global GS1 Healthcare Leadership Team, which is responsible for the strategy and direction, Healthcare representatives from global medical device and pharmaceutical companies, distributors, hospitals and solution providers work side-by-side with representatives from GS1 Member Organisations, such as GS1 Portugal. GS1 Healthcare cooperates with many associations and other organisations worldwide and is seen as a trusted partner. Can we say that GS1 is well accepted by the Healthcare sector? Absolutely - yes! When there is discussion around barcoding, product data and traceability in the Healthcare sector, GS1 has taken on a major role. In 2016, Hospital de Cascais, a Portuguese hospital, was awarded with the most important GS1 Healthcare prize for a project of GS1 Standards implementation by a Healthcare Provider, in this specific case, in the medicines circuit. What does it represent for Portugal? And for GS1? The implementation in the Hospital de Cascais illustrates a leading example of the implementation of bedside scanning, which has a direct impact on patient safety. The hospital has shown how medication errors can be reduced and patients treated with quality and care, while using modern technology to support the caregivers in their daily work. We need more hospitals to follow their great example and implement GS1
standards in processes at the bedside, as well as in operation theatres. How do you see the role and work of GS1 Portugal at a local level? As mentioned, GS1 Portugal is very involved on global level and represents the local Portuguese industry needs in that forum. In addition, the team at GS1 Portugal is knowledgeable about the latest healthcare developments across the world. They are a very dynamic and engaged MO, well respected and capable to actively supporting their members/community. What are the main goals of GS1 Healthcare for the next years regarding standards adoption? GS1 Healthcare is focused on driving standards adoption and implementation, as the standards are available now. The focus is specifically on implementation at the end of the supply chain – the hospitals and retail pharmacies. Without the full supply chain implementing we will not see the benefits derived from the use of standards. At the same time, to avoid additional costs and complexity GS1 Healthcare is focussing on keeping a harmonised approach in regulations worldwide. The Public Policy group is constantly monitoring and acting on new regulatory requirements from across the globe.
GS1 Healthcare is a global working group at GS1, training stakeholders of the healthcare value chain, including pharmaceutical companies, medical devices, sellers, hospitals, pharmacies, logistic operators, regulators and associations. “IT IS THE FIRST TIME THAT A REVOLUTION IN PORTUGAL HAS EVERYTHING THAT IS NEEDED TO LEAD” This is how João Vasconcelos, Secretary of State for Industry, sees Portugal’s potential on facing the new industrial revolution

spaço 560. An exhibition launched last January at the Ministry of Economy. It was here that João Vasconcelos, Secretary of State for Industry, has welcomed GS1 Portugal for a guided visit to an exhibition that wishes to become an exhibition “Best of Portuguese Industry”, according to himself. Código 560 went along and the surprise was general. A room including different products, made in Portugal, that have in their manufacturing a strong innovative and technological component. As João Vasconcelos explains “we started by exhibiting products from the Portuguese industry with this technological component. Soon we will add design products, manufacture and creativity”. Also because, he says, “the XXIst industry, including Portugal’s, must give these products a greater importance” A vision, innovative in itself, of one of the responsible for the growing of Startup Lisboa, who states having two great priorities as secretary of state for Industry. “On one hand, help preparing our economy and our industry for the digitalization and the upcoming challenges already happening in some sectors, on the other hand fostering

design and creativity”. Back to Espaço 560. This exhibition displays products of several sectors, from the automobile to the textile, from aeronautic to ceramics, from coffee machines to heaters, not forgetting the healthcare sector. And here is one of the great surprises: Portugal will export more medicines and medical devices than wine and cork together, facts that are unknown to the majority and one of the reasons of this exhibition. In the future, the aim will be to diversify the products in exhibition and take Espaço 560 throughout the country.

uring his professional career of more than 20 years, he led several companies. These experiences have contributed to the international knowledge that he displays on subjects like design, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. The secretary of state for Industry leads the project Indústria 4.0, the first revolution in which, he believes, “Portugal has everything to participate”. According to you, what is innovation, after all? This is an issue discussed since a long time, all over the world. In my case, it’s easy: it must be a new process, a new product or a new service. Innovation must have an economic impact, it must generate the creation of wealth and jobs. The latest Government initiatives wish to include creativity, art and design as a component of innovation. Sometimes, innovation means not to be technological, and value the human component and creativity. This is because a completely automatized industry can be found anywhere. Today, the value is no longer in the one who produces, but in the one who conceives. And in the industry of the future the value will stay where these new components are.

As we have seen in Espaço 560 we, the Portuguese people, are still amazed about what Portugal manufactures. Was this attitude also applied when, in the past, we minimized young people capacities? A lot has happened in the last 30 years at different levels. Our business structure is recent, it has about 30 years. However, it was created by entrepreneurs who already looked at the world as a market. A generation with an essential production know- how, while the new generations are more focused on trade or management, what is also good. The best cases I know are the ones where the two generations get along, with an interesting balance between a “reasoned” risk taking and a more “daring” one. And this could be seen on the launch of the Indústria 4.0, that got together more than two thousand people, and this was the best evidence that industrials, regardless of their qualifications, understand that if innovation has a positive impact, it is in order to assume, assimilate and practice. On a previous interview, you said that during these latest years Portugal have taken hope away from young people. Are we giving back that hope? In every kind of emigration, I believe it’s a country losing its best people. But the latest, of highly qualified people, had never happened. And these people haven’t emigrated because of lack of jobs. They did it because of lack of hope, lack of career perspectives, because they didn´t believe in a future in Portugal. So, when the country hasn’t itself a vision of future and doesn’t define what it wants to be, it’s obvious that a young person is going to look for all that in countries that have it. who made the transition from manufacture to computerization. So, it’s possible. We know you believe in the potential of Portugal and this new generation. What characterizes it? There is something very important in this new generation: there is more respect for the environment, there is another perception of social responsibility and a huge appreciation of human resources. And this is a characteristic of the economy of the future. Speaking about Espaço 560. How did this idea come up and what is its goal? The main goal is to show what the Portuguese industry is nowadays, by the means of an exhibition with Portuguese products with a strong technological component. We have products that represent the best of those sectors all over the world and different companies, from SME to multinational companies, are represented. And the great majority are unknown in the country and in the rest of the world. This exhibition wants to change the Portuguese society ‘s perception about its own industry. Soon, we will add Portuguese products with the components of creativity and manufacture. We want this to be the embryo of a great exhibition, a Best Portuguese Industry, taking it then on a roadshow throughout the country, because Portugal must know it. The break of frontiers, globalization, the new digital era has, among other factors, contribute to the fourth industrial revolution. What makes this new revolution – Indústria 4.0 – different from the previous ones? This is an industrial revolution that acknowledges the integration between machines and humans as a benefit for the industry and it is really happening, in Portugal and in the rest of the world. In all the previous ones, we never went along and we realized them only after a long time. So, it’s the first time that we are aware of the revolution in time, and that Portugal has everything that’s needed to participate in it We want to seize this opportunity and to become a facilitator in order to make

Portugal participate. Our role is to create the awareness, working groups such as GS1 Portugal strategic committee, part of Indústria 4.0 project. There are certain companies that have been prepared for the revolution for two years, but there are others to which we have to give a pedagogical component and explain what is happening. But it is happening, And GS1 Portugal’s Innovation and Competitiveness Centre is an example: it’s pedagogy, it’s a learning factory.

You mentioned the Innovation and Competitiveness Centre. What do you think is its importance to the Portuguese industry? The entrepreneur, when he/she sees the return, adopts the new technologies. That’s why spaces like the centre are crucial. On a pedagogical way, the return in investments like automation, electronic commerce, intelligence logistic, among other gains, are explained. It would be important that a lot more organizations adopt this position of explaining the immediate gains. Much of Indústria 4.0’s strategy is to do what GS1 Portugal does at level o of the new Head Office: pedagogy. And do this in other sectors all over the country.

fter four years at the Directive Board of GS1 Portugal, the time has come to leave the organization. An exit that carries along mixed emotions. On one hand, it represents a new professional challenge: the mission as the General Manager of Auchan Retail Italy Hipermarkets. On the other hand, I already miss a team of dedicated professionals. A team that works daily to fulfill the mission of GS1 Portugal: to be the trustful partner of companies and people. To the team, I wish to leave a message of recognition for the work so far developed, with proven results, and of motivation for the challenges in the future. I had the honor of closely accompany the evolution and the growth of the organization’s collaborators. A young, dynamic team, always committed to do more and better for the businesses, the companies and the lives of those working on them. I believe in this team that, although mostly young, tries hard and gives its best, and is an example of success in the way experience and irreverence can unite efforts with commendable results. I wish to thank the Directive Board for the joint work that, in my view, has led GS1 Portugal to the level where it stands now. I must stress the bet on added value services, such as SYNCPT

However, I must mention in particular one Project that represents the evolution of the organization: GS 1 Portugal’s the new Head Office and Innovation Centre.
I had the honor of closely accompany the evolution and the growth of the organization’s collaborators. A young, dynamic team, always committed to do more and better for the businesses, the companies and the lives of those working on them. An iconic, innovative building, that proves the statute of public utility entity. It is not only a welcoming office for the team and, but also a didactic space that promotes pedagogy. Open to everybody, the Innovation and Competitiveness Centre is a real example of GS1 Portugal’s role as a business facilitator. There, it is possible to see, “in living colors”, the benefits of a Global System with over 40 years of experience. Finally, I couldn’t finish without some brief words to all the
Members, future Members and partners of GS1 Portugal. Just to tell you consider this organization not only as a business investment, but to trust this system that on a very short term will assure you gains in several and different valences (time, costs, resources, among others). Look at GS1 Portugal as an organization that is willing to welcome you and to listen to your needs in order to cooperate in developing ways of improving your business. An organization with its eyes in the future, with the knowledge of the global Best Practices but never forgetting the national reality, your reality. I believe in the benefits of this global era and I know that the Portuguese entrepreneurs have a lot of potential to face the internal and external opportunities. Based on my personal experience, I am sure that if we close ourselves from the world, we will not get so far as our capacity allows us to go.
