FLUSHING CHILD CARE CENTER Fall 2020 Instructor: Bryony Roberts Site Location: Flushing, Queens, NY, USA

The design is aiming to extend the community while providing an organizational arcade structure for informal street businesses and space for events. The childcare center, therefore, enhancing the idea of play, can be understood as a device that can provide joy. Looking at these crisis in Flushing, the conditions that people have to deal with when living in urban environments have shifted significantly and need a place to accommodate these needs. At the same time, however, despite all the changes in the way of living, the need for joy – or at least for the end of sadness – remains a fundamental human need; maybe even stronger than before. The design aims to extend the community while acknowledging the local struggles, providing an organizational structure for informal street businesses and space for events. The arcade element is played throughout the land. Both as a structural element, an organizational tool, opening shape, and ornament. They aim to provide connective space to the community and used it as a language to harmonize the whole area. The long arcade across the site provides a space to promote local street business while having a maximized local access for convenience. It functions as a guiding axis and organizes the overall space. It’s open on both ends and functions as one of the main entrances next to the child care center while at the same time providing access and directing to the central space. The central space is organized in a way that the sense of playfulness and joy is enlarged. It is from this green space, the pavilions, that you step ‘outside’ and into the ‘interior’ courtyards and the spatial events. The water shoreline is modified to introduce water into the site and help with flooding. It is understood as a place of dense vegetation, playing with organized geometry formed with circles and lines, that in points, are incorporated with spatial events. The housing is located at both north and south ends whereas the childcare center is located on the south side of the land.

THE TRUCK STOP Spring 2021 Instructor: Michael Bell

The gas station typology has an intention of decline. Meanwhile, the private transport industry is driving the gas station into irrelevance. While the electric car as it exists today still relies on a public network of electric charging points, many located at gas stations, the current electronification of cars is only set to rise. A future scenario where electric cars drive by day and charge at home by night, will all but eliminate the need for traditional roadside stations. Charging stations are being installed in key areas throughout the country for public charging and workplace charging as a supplement to residential charging. The world’s electric-car infrastructure is growing by leaps. But there are still gaps – places without chargers that could be served if EV charging was portable, flexible, and put on wheels. Aim to envision a new architecture for filling stations and by challenging the actual concept of refueling, at once disappears the typical idea of a station. Re-imagined the filling station as a semi-autonomous system that engages and adds empathy at a man scale, rather than a static piece of the built environment. The system operates as a relief network to supply inaccessible areas. Thus no site is imposed yet upon permanently. It is a Temporary station with adaptability to different environments where everything is never static. With an approach to the design of an inbetween of architecture and machine for internalizing the existing environment: 1) Isolation 2) Stimulation 3) Collection and 4) Distribution. Charging stations are being installed in areas throughout the country for EV charging. With solar power modular station. Automated united with a compact solar power station unit to distributed support off-grid charging station.Places without chargers that could be served if EV charging was portable, flexible, and put on wheels. That made possible with PV standalone charging stations along with charge controller.

Current U.S. annual net generation Million Megawatthours

U.S. solar generation has increased from 2 million MWh in 2008 to 96 million MWh in 2018. Solar generation is generally categorized as small-scale solar installations or utility-scale installations.

Renewable electricity generation capacity by energy source, 2011-2040 %

The U.S. EIA projected U.S. solar generating capacity to increase more than tenfold between 2011 and 2040. The 2035 projected total capacity was reached in 2016, and the 2040 projected capacity in 2017.

HART ISLAND MEMORIAL Spring 2021 Instructor: Karla Rothstein Site Location: New York, NY, USA

Our fear of death enslaves us to the illusion that everything will be gone after our demise. Mindfulness can help dissolve this illusion of permanence, replacing it with infinite companionship. The project serves as a journey of meditation, interacting with nature to provoke people to reflect on the meaning of life and death and help them with accepting the death of loved ones. In a context where our society divides death, memorial, and assistance in mourning from daily life, this project is a response to a claim to make mourning less concealed, more pervasive, and familiar in our public realm. The project is taking a memorial into transit then arriving at Hart island for the full experience and providing a poetic approach to life’s ephemerality. Rather than making a single static space to remember and honor every person who died — the memorial is more like an experience that links to a larger systematic and multiple-scale transportation networks that intervene hart island into the urban landscape. Now the experience of mourning and recovering from losing loved ones has become a collective activity, aiming at relieving grief with infinite companionship.
