RESEARCH Facing the problem of affordable fresh food scarcity around our site, our primary design strategy is to make our park all about plant-based food, or let’s say edible landscape. We propose that all the plants on our site will be agricultural. In this system, we get materials from regeneration farming. Those materials go to food production and education and hands-on learning, and then we provide these programs to the community and attract the farmers.

BUSHWICK EDIBLE PARK In our designed layers, underneath the elevated landscape, we have a restaurant with a roof garden facing the water, the education center, botanical garden, farmers’ market, and biogas plant in our park’s central area. We also have fungi farms connecting with each other under these buildings. We provide a residential building for the farmers on the north side. We also have mix-used buildings across the avenue. We categorize all the greenery into farmlands responding to our concept of edible landscape, and besides the pedestrian circulation, we place farmer’s lanes across the park for the farmers to collect crops. We also propose extended piers and bridges along with the new soft shoreline, to encourage interaction between the visitors and our aquaculture.
FARM The farming system is based on four introduced categories: an edible perennial landscape scattered throughout the site and concentrated in a rose garden, second, fungiculture mushroom planting in dark and humid conditions, cultivated all year round and peaking in the fall, garden crops with drip-irrigation (reducing water use by 40%), thirdly, a crop rotation between legume, leaf, root and fruit cultivated seasonally year-round. Seaweed farming extending into the east river, harvested January-May, and finally wetland grass is planted for natural greywater treatment. These species introduced impact food webs and create multi-scalar habitats for species, especially the oysters. A total area of 3.57 hectares will be farmed from our site, yielding 192,000 tons of crops per year, in addition to 861 tons of mushrooms and 3 dry tons of seaweed, transforming the site into a true ecological habitat serving the fauna and flora of the East River and feeding the people of Bushwick.
BUILDING The design of the buildings in the Bushwick Edible Park remains relatively simple than conventional buildings. Main idea behind the design was to provide slopes that collects storm water and to make the roof occupiable farm land. The curved roofs of the buildings will create a unique scenery of farmland in urban context.
WATER The main part in Bushwick Edible park is farms which require lots of water at the same time. There more sophisticated water systems should be added to supply farms as well as the other programs such as restaurants and housings. The intention was to maximize water resue to redue the water demand in the park.
ENERGY Bushiwick Edible Park’s energy system mainly conisists of three types of energy production : Wind Energy, Solar Energy and Biomass Energy. From the climate study, ET-9 has found out that the site gets frequent wind from the East River and enough sunlight. On top of that this energy proposal aims to bring waste composition cycle that is powered by neighboring community’s participation.

MOBILITY Bushwick Inlet Park is composed of a range of diverse programming related to food. The bespoke movement of user experience is essential to assure a park that effortlessly creates spaces. For further considerations, the loop should extend beyond the boundaries of the site and along the waterfront for connectivity and consistencies of movement in both direction on the water’s edge. In addition, the street interventions on Kent Ave should also extend South to Domino Park and North to edge of Franklin Street near Newton Creek. As the site and the surrounding area continue to morph into a mixeduse district, another layer to consider is redirecting trucks away from Kent Ave to truly pedestrianized Kent Ave and create a new special district from Williamsburg Bridge to Franklin Street and Commercial Street with design regulations promoting foot traffic, uses that would require smaller delivery trucks (similar to the proposal for the Farmer’s Market Building) and additional public spaces that would compliment an edible park.
