Shooting at the Recreation Activitiy Center (RAC) Any media wishing to shoot still photography or video of a Georgia Southern Swimming & Diving meet is welcome to do so. However, all photographers are required to stay out of the way of coaches and team members. It is recommended that photographers stand several feet away from the pool to avoid injury and possible damage to equipment.

Stats and Rosters All Georgia Southern stats, rosters and schedules can be retrieved by accessing the Georgia Southern Athletics website at www.georgiasoutherneagles.com or by calling the Georgia Southern AMR office at (912) 478-5448. Results for each individual or tournament meet will be made available after each contest and will also be accessible through the website. Meet results and a game story will be faxed and emailed to all media following each meet.

All player interviews must be arranged through the AMR office. All interviews will take place after practice. Non toll-free calls will be returned collect. On meet days, all interviews will be held at the conclusion of the meet at the Aquatic Center. Any media members wishing to cover practice must first speak with Coach Kellogg for permission, and the AMR office requests advanced knowledge to provide maximum on-site service.

Through more than 100 years, Georgia Southern, a Carnegie Doctoral-Research University, has stayed true to one purpose: to advance the educational and economic aspirations of Georgians. Whether a student is a new high school graduate or a professional deciding to return to the University for an advanced or online degree, Georgia Southern has numerous programs and options for students in every stage of life. The University’s College of Graduate Studies is seeing unprecedented growth in its programs. An increasing number of students are also opting for online classes. During the spring 2010 commencement ceremony, more than 200 graduates received online degrees—including several that made their first-ever trip to campus to receive their diploma. The University’s Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah takes the Georgia Southern classroom experience to students outside of Statesboro. The College of Business Administration also offers the Georgia WebMBA program that allows professionals to earn their master’s without leaving home.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

Imagine a college residence hall with suite and apartment-style living, a shopping area and a food court. That on-campus living experience became reality at Georgia Southern with the opening of Centennial Place. As home to 1,001 students, Centennial Place is setting a new standard in on-campus living. Several key facilities at the University have celebrated expansions and renovations. A four-year, $22.75 million dollar project to expand and renovate the Zach S. Henderson Library tripled the size of the facility. Today it provides students and faculty with a state-of-theart facility for research and study. The $7.8 million dollar renovation and extension of the Foy Building added 3,599 square feet of space. Foy’s renovation includes a major enhancement to the outstanding Carol A. Carter Recital Hall. The Wetland Preserve at Georgia Southern University’s Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q Ball, Jr. Raptor Center opened to the public last year. The 12-acre addition includes a small pond and capture basin that houses a beaver lodge, a cypress pond that will be home to a variety of wading birds like herons and egrets, and a waterfowl pond. The 17-acre center is one of only a select few in the nation to be located in the heart of a major university campus.

REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD

Georgia Southern students have more opportunity than ever to study alongside others from countries all over the world. Both the number of students coming to Georgia Southern from other countries and Georgia Southern students studying abroad has grown steadily over the last decade. This year, students participated in the first study abroad experience in the African country of Botswana, addressing global issues such as poverty and environmental sustainability while working alongside the non-profit organization Somarelang Tikologo. However, the international experience is not limited to study, and Georgia Southern students volunteered nearly 16,000 hours of service to both the community and abroad. During spring break 2010, more than 100 students traveled the world volunteering, working at an orphanage for medically frail children and assisting with construction projects in Honduras and also establishing a library in the Bahamas. Closer to home, students Volunteer in the Bulloch County area through Greek organizations, service clubs, and the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. Georgia Southern students learn that service to others is always time well spent. The University works to better the community every day. The College of Health and Human Sciences is partnering with the Bulloch County Health Department to curb childhood obesity. Preventing disease and bettering the quality of life for people at risk of serious health problems is a focus of the JiannPing Hsu College of Public Health. And the psychology department in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences has expanded the services at its psychology clinic to include children. Undergraduate Admissions Requirements Due to the University’s growth in academic reputation and size, it is recommended that freshmen apply at the end of their junior year of high school. Acceptance is based on a high school diploma or equivalent, satisfactory grade point average and satisfactory SAT or ACT score. Students must also complete the College Preparatory Curriculum requirements for regular admission into any Georgia public university.

Brooks A. Keel, Ph.D. began his tenure as the 12th President of Georgia Southern University on January 4, 2010.

Tom Kleinlein became the Director of Athletics for Georgia Southern University on November 12, 2012. He will oversee 15 men’s and women’s Division I athletic teams at Georgia Southern.

The Augusta, Ga. native, a self-described product of the education system of Georgia, returns to his home state to lead Georgia Southern University with significant experience in the top ranks of academia, research, and economic development. Prior to his arrival at Georgia Southern this past year, Keel served as the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, and professor of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge since 2006. From 2002 to 2006, he was a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and associate Vice President for Research at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. Keel’s professional career began in 1985 at the University of Kansas School of MedicineWichita, where he served in a variety of positions including the Daniel K. Roberts Distinguished Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1995-2001), President of the Women’s Research Institute (1993-2001), and Director of Reproductive Medicine Laboratories (1994-2002). Since joining Georgia Southern, Keel has been focused on expanding undergraduate and graduate learning opportunities whether through research, creative or community-based educational experiences. In addition, he has been working to increase Georgia Southern’s research and economic development opportunities. The University is already beginning to attract interest through its Renewable Energy Lab and Public Health Core Research Lab. Keel earned his Ph.D. in reproductive endocrinology from the Medical College of Georgia in 1982 and a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Augusta College (now Augusta State University) in 1978. He has completed postdoctoral work at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, Vermillion. He is a member of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, among others. Keel has served on numerous boards related to his discipline, including the American Board of Bioanalysis, the American Association of Bioanalysts Board of Registry, the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Southeastern Universities Research Association and the Executive Committee of the Council on Research Policy and Graduate Education of APLU.

Kleinlein comes to Georgia Southern from Kent State where he became Deputy Athletic Director in September 2011 after serving as the Golden Flashes’ Executive Associate Athletic Director since 2010. Kleinlein served as the primary advisor and liaison to the director of athletics while overseeing of the strategic planning and operations for Kent State’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department. He managed Kent State’s revenue generation component and coordinated the department’s efforts with Institutional Advancement, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs and served as the direct sport supervisor for football along with men’s and women’s basketball while directing many of the day-to-day operations of the department. During his time at Kent State, Kleinlein negotiated a five-year multi-media agreement with Clear Channel Media & iHeartRadio as well as an all sport apparel deal with Nike that included the first ever team concept shop in the Kent State University Bookstore. In only his first season with the Golden Flashes, he developed and implemented marketing plans that saw a 200% increase in football attendance in 2010 and an increase in basketball ticket revenue for the 2011-12 season. Kleinlein was also part of the implementation team for a 10 year, $42.5 million athletic facility master plan for Kent State. Prior to his arrival in Kent, Kleinlein was the Associate Athletic Director for Football at Arizona State University from 2005-10. In that role, he oversaw the strategic planning, budget, personnel, scheduling, team travel, facilities, student-athlete welfare and campus and alumni relations. Before his stint in Tempe, Kleinlein served as the Assistant Athletic Director for Football Operations at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J. from 2003-05, overseeing all aspects of a $6.1 million budget. Prior to that, he spent nearly four-and-a-half years at his alma mater, joining the Wake Forest University staff in 1998 as an academic counselor, before being named Assistant Director of Football Operations in 2002. A four-year letter winner on the Demon Deacons’ offensive line from 1989-92, Kleinlein earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Wake Forest (1998), and a master’s in education curriculum and instruction from Arizona State (2008). Originally from Inwood, N.Y., Kleinlein and his wife, Tara, have two sons – Austin (13) and Mason (10).

Keel is married to Dr. Tammie Schalue, an accomplished scientist and scholar. Dr. Schalue currently serves as the director of laboratories at the Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and the associate administrator for the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). Both are certified SCUBA diving instructors.

Cone Hall is the home to the Academic Enhancement Center in the Office of StudentAthlete Services. The former mid-century residence hall was completely refurbished to provide individual and group study areas, a computer lab, meeting rooms for tutorial work, a lecture room, conference room and offices for support staff. The Division provides academic services for all 15 Eagle teams. Ten Georgia Southern sport programs improved their multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for the most recent reporting period (2009-2010). Two squads earned perfect single-year scores of 1000 as well.

IRON WORKS

Away from the playing fields, the cameras and the game day excitement is Iron Works, the heart of GSUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strength and conditioning for all 15 intercollegiate teams. Here, athletes enhance their physical capabilities through the training leadership of certified coaches, and the end results are usually displayed in the win column. A renovation to Iron Works included the addition of offices and a new entrance and interior. Nearly $50,000 worth of new weight equipment including multi-squat racks, two Olympic platforms complete with bumpers plates and bars, free weights, hammer machines and body weight scale were added. Georgia Southern Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Tom Melton, who has the dual title of assistant athletics director/athletic performance, provides a direct strength training leadership role to the Eagle football program while coordinating and supervising off-season and in-season applications for the other 14 GSU teams. Thanks to donations received from former Georgia Southern football athletes, Iron Works is also home to two Vertimax Jump Trainers.

Georgia Southern Sports Medicine provides optimal care for student-athletes as they prepare for practice and competition. Full-time and graduate assistant athletic trainers work with all Eagle teams during their competition seasons and off-season workouts to prevent and rehabilitate injuries. The Athletic Training room underwent an impressive re-modeling phase within its Hanner Fieldhouse location and features state-of-the-art equipment for the treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. The facility incorporates the latest advances and resources in sports medicine as staff constantly research technology to benefit the student-athlete. A complete hydra-therapy area and a large collection of student-athlete treatment stations are housed in the training area. A separate rehabilitation room provides specialized care for sessions specific to the treatment of injuries and for post-surgery recovery. Partnering with one of the top athletics training programs in the nation at Georgia Southern, studentathletes receive excellent care and attention both on the field and off.

AQUATICS CENTER AT THE RECREATIONS ACTIVITY CENTER The Georgia Southern swimming & diving program officially moved to its new home, the pristine Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activity Center, in January, 2007. The Eagles christened the facility on Saturday, October 20, 2007 when they defeated Southeastern Conference opponent Vanderbilt 120-89. The Eagles improved to 10-1 all-time at the RAC during the 2008-09 season. GSUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Campus Recreation and Intramural Department took on the $31,860,000 expansion project in May 2005 to add 120,000 additional square feet to the recreational facility, 6,150 of which are dedicated to the indoor pool. The indoor facility features the 11 lane competition pool, a 30-person whirlpool, offices for the coaches and Aquatics Center staff, a separate locker room for the swimming & diving

team and a wet conference room available for team meetings. Temporary seating is brought in to fill the natatorium at home meets, while the surrounding glass walls allow additional spectators to observe from the exterior. The outdoor facility boasts an additional whirlpool and a leisure pool. Daktronics provided the swimming & diving program with a newly purchased, state-of-the-art scoreboard. Posted on the west wall just above the coachesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; offices, the eightlane scoreboard provides spectators with event and heat information along with live timing. Also featured on the board are the current record times for the particular event in session, final placement for each event/heat and the running score for each team.

THE COASTAL COLLEGIATE SWIMMING ASSOCIATION The Southern Conference along with the Atlantic Sun, Big South and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conferences announced July 10, 2007 the formation of a new Division I swimming and diving conference – named the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA). The CCSA was established through the cooperative efforts of the coaches, administrators and commissioners of the four member conferences and has received approval from the NCAA for membership as a Division I conference. “The best thing about the formation of the conference is that it is very deep, which will bring a lot of exposure to both the conference and Georgia Southern swimming & diving,” said GSU head swimming & diving coach Nathan Kellogg. “We get to swim with teams that are already within the SoCon, like Charleston and Davidson, that are big regional contenders, and that will surely reinforce rivalries between the programs,” added Kellogg. “We always swim well against one another, so we expect it will produce nothing but good things.” The CCSA has 12 total members – 12 women’s swimming & diving teams and six men’s swimming and diving programs.

The charter members of the CCSA in women’s swimming are Campbell (A-Sun), College of Charleston (SoCon), Davidson (SoCon), Florida A&M (MEAC), Florida Gulf Coast (A-Sun), Gardner-Webb (A-Sun), Georgia Southern (SoCon), Howard (MEAC), North Carolina A&T (MEAC), North Florida (A-Sun), Radford (Big South) and VMI (Big South). The six schools that comprise the CCSA men’s swimming members are College of Charleston, Davidson, Florida A&M, Gardner-Webb, Howard and VMI. The first-ever CCSA inaugural Conference Championship was held on Feb. 21-23, 2008 in Huntersville, N.C. Davidson claimed the first-ever women’s championships, while College of Charleston claimed the men’s title. Atlantic Sun Commissioner Ted Gumbart, Executive Director of the CCSA said, “The main focus in establishing the CCSA has been the student-athletes, and we are excited that the swimmers and divers in each of our leagues now have a conference home and honors for which to compete.” CCSA administrative duties have been divided among the four Leagues. The league also includes a senior woman administrator and formed a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

NATHAN KELLOGG Head Coach George Mason, 2004 9th Year

Nathan Kellogg has led the Georgia Southern swimming and diving program to one of its most successful eras in school history and practically the whole record book has been rewritten under his tenure. Georgia Southern swimmers have set 44 school records during the past eight seasons. He became the winningest coach in program history after GSU posted a 10-5 mark in 2011-12 and owns a 68-37 dual meet record. The Eagles took third at the 2012 CCSA Championships as Kristen Bates (100 breast) and Courtney Harrison (200 breast) won individual titles. Bates and diver Sara Meisenhelder were also NCAA provisional qualifiers. Georgia Southern’s success continued in the classroom as the Eagles were named a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American Team. With the current Scholar AllAmerica program in place since 2008, the Eagles have achieved CSCAA Scholar All-America status for nine semesters. The 2010-11 squad broke the Eagles all-time record for most regularseason wins, earning 13 meet victories before placing fourth at the CCSA Championships. The team set three school records on its way to a fourth-place finish at the CCSA Championships. Three Eagles garnered a total of five all-conference selections based on their top-3 finishes at the championships. Lindsay Goodman broke three school records, including a second-place finish in the 200 back. Goodman also earned third-place finishes in the 400 IM and 100 back. Courtney Harrison finished third in the 100 breast and diver Sara Meisenhelder placed third on the 3-meter boards. Caroline Bevillard was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic AllAmerica Women’s At-Large Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Bevillard was later named as one of only 13 recipients of a postgraduate scholarship awarded by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics. The 2009-10 season was a memorable year for the Eagles both inside and outside the pool. Lauren Parr broke three individual school records at the CCSA Championships, setting new records in the 200 butterfly and 200 and 400 IM. Senior Courtney Martz also set an individual school record in the 50 freestyle. Parr and Martz were both part of the 400 medley relay team, consisting of Lindsay Goodman and Ashley White, that set a new school record. Martz also gained

attention outside the pool, earning CSCAA Scholar All-American honors, and Bevillard was named Georgia Southern Female Scholar Athlete of the year and was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District women’s at-large second team for District III. The Eagles broke 17 school records at the 2009 CCSA Championships and finished in third place. Fifteen Eagles program were named to the CCSA All-Academic Team during the 2008-09 season for maintaining a 3.2 GPA or better in the classroom. The 2007-08 season was one of the best for the Eagles. They registered the most wins in program history at that time with a 12-1 record, including a 9-1 conference mark. Kellogg’s unit went a perfect 9-0 at the newly-constructed Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activities Center (RAC), broke five school records and earned a fourth-place finish at the first-ever Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships. During the 2006-07 season, Kellogg led the Eagles to a 6-5 overall record to go along with a program best second place finish at the Northeastern Conference Championships. Mackenzie Garrot was named NEC Outstanding Rookie of the Meet after winning both the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the NEC Championships. Courtney Martz had an impressive rookie season, earning NEC honors in the 50 freestyle, 100 free, 200 free relay and the 400 free relay. Eleven members of the swimming and diving program were selected to the All-NEC Team for their accomplishments in the pool, and six were named to the NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll in 2007, maintaining a 3.2 GPA or better. Kellogg originally came to Georgia Southern to serve as an assistant coach, but quickly moved up the coaching ranks serving as interim head coach for one season, before being named Georgia Southern’s head coach in June 2005. He is currently certified as a Water Safety Instructor and is a member of the College Swim Coach’s Association of America (CSCAA), American Swim Coach’s Association (ASCA) and USA Swimming. Kellogg graduated from George Mason in May 2004 with a degree in communications and completed his master’s degree in sport management from Georgia Southern in 2010.

David Giambra enters his second season as head diving coach with the Eagles swimming and diving program. In his first year at GSU, he helped Sara Meisenhelder become the first diver in school history to qualify for NCAA Zones with school record-breaking scores of 263.25 on the 1-meter board and 290.05 on the 3-meter board. Meisenhelder was named the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Diver of the Year at the league’s championship meet. A four-year letterwinner at Clemson University, Giambra achieved numerous top-3 finishes against ACC competition during his career. Winner of the Coaches’ Award during the 2008-09 season, he holds school records in the one-meter, three-meter and platform diving events. Giambra earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson, and the Yardley, Pa., native is currently pursuing a master’s degree in engineering management at Georgia Southern.

Assistant Coach Georgia Southern, 2011 First Year

Ali Campbell joins the coaching staff of the Georgia Southern swimming and diving program for her first season after an outstanding four-year career with the Eagles from 2007-11. She was a four-time Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association AllAcademic selection and graduated as the GSU record holder in the 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free events. She also set school records as a member of the 200, 400 and 800 free relay teams. Campbell still holds school marks in the 1000 free and in the 200 and 800 free relays. She was named CCSA Swimmer of the Week, becoming the first Eagle to earn the honor, once as a freshman and again during her sophomore campaign. Campbell graduated from Georgia Southern in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition. The Fort McMurray, Alberta, native is currently pursuing a master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in sports nutrition. She is a member of the Dietitians of Canada and the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and is working on becoming a registered dietitian.
