GENERAL INFORMATION

2 MEDIA INFORMATION SHOOTING AT EAGLE FIELD

Any media wishing to shoot still photography or video of a Georgia Southern soccer match is welcome to do so. However, all photographers are required to stay off the field of play as well as outside of both team areas. It is recommended that photographers stand several yards off the sideline to reduce the risk of injury. Also, no children are allowed near the field of play, including the track.

PLAYER INTERVIEWS

All player interviews must be arranged through the AMR office. All interviews will take place after practice. Non toll-free calls will be returned collect. On game days, all interviews will be held at the conclusion of the game on Eagle Field.

INTERVIEWS WITH COACH

Please contact the AMR office if you desire an interview with Coach Hart. The best time to reach Coach Hart is on weekday mornings. On game days, all interviews with Coach Hart will be held after the game is concluded on Eagle Field. No interviews will be done prior to the game.

Centers for business research and development, rural health, international studies, public affairs, teacher education, rehabilitation technology, water policy and biostatistics involve teams of faculty experts, working in conjunction with undergraduate and graduate students, to tackle community and regional concerns.The University extends educational opportunities to citizens throughout the state via graduate centers located in Savannah, Augusta, Brunswick, Hinesville, and Dublin as well as through distance learning technologies at numerous other remote sites.

IRON WORKS

Hidden behind the spotlight of Georgia Southern’s athletic success may be the most important component of why there is a beacon to begin with.

Away from the playing fields, the cameras and the excitement exists Iron Works, the heart of GSU’s strength and conditioning for all 15 intercollegiate teams. There, athletes enhance their physical capabilities through the training leadership of certified coaches, and the ending results are usually displayed in the win column.

Built in 1989, the recent Iron Works renovation included the addition of offices and the total rehab of the entrance and interior. Nearly $50,000 worth of new weight equipment including multi-squat racks, two Olympic platforms complete with bumpers plates and bars, free weights, hammer machines and body weight scale were added. The biggest ad-

dition is a Mondo surface track 9x60 feet running down the middle of Iron Works for warm-up and agility work.

Already at 5,400 square feet, the addition of nearly 1,000 square feet - including storage areas and modernized reception area previously not available - makes Iron Works a premier workout facility.

Georgia Southern Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Tom Melton re-joined the GSU staff with the dual title of assistant athletics director/athletic performance in the spring of 2004. Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Dave Jenkerson was hired in February 2007 to oversee the strength training for the Eagle football program.

The GSU SPORTS MEDICINE CENTER underwent an impressive remodeling phase in 1998 within its Hanner Fieldhouse location and features state-of-the-art equipment for the treatment and rehabilitation of injuries.

The Georgia Southern Sports Medicine Department, under the direction of Head Athletics Trainer/Assistant Athletics Director Brant Berkstresser, ATC, oversees the medical needs for all 15 Eagle teams. Ten certified athletic trainers work with athletes to prevent and rehabilitate injuries.

In addition to its ideal location, the facility incorporates the latest advances and resources in sports medicine technology, including a complete hydra-therapy area and a large collection of student-athlete treatment stations.

ith all the charm of a small, southern city and the advantages of a metropolitan area, Statesboro provides a relaxing atmosphere for residents, students and visitors alike. Nestled among the pines of Bulloch County, Statesboro is only a short drive from the Atlantic coast. Bulloch County was established in 1796 and is named for Georgia’s first governor, Archibald Bulloch.

While in Statesboro, you will not want to miss a visit to the many historic buildings and areas that provide pleasant reminders of the past, like Jaeckel Hotel, established in 1905; The Statesboro Bed & Breakfast Inn, a fully restored turn-of-the-century home; and The Bank of Statesboro, Statesboro’s first bank.

Behold Statesboro in full bloom from March until August as colorful dogwoods, magnolias, azaleas and brilliant crepe myrtle trees line the main thoroughfares. You’ll be enchanted by farm land and unspoiled scenic acreage throughout the countryside of Statesboro and Bulloch County. In fact, the city’s beauty was captured as the setting for a couple of motion pictures — 1969, starring Kiefer Sutherland, and Now and Then, starring Demi Moore.

have advanced to the NCAA Tournament a combined four times since 1987. The Eagle baseball program has qualified for three NCAA Regional Tournaments in 2000, 2001 and 2002 and have made five regional appearances in the last 14 years, including a College World Series showing in 1990. Professional sports are just a short trip up the road with the Atlanta Braves, Falcons, Hawks, Thrashers and Jacksonville Jaguars just three hours away to the north and south. The city of Atlanta became an international sports town in 1996, hosting the Centennial Summer Olympic Games.

Statesboro has short, mild winters and long, warm summers.

Rainfall averages 47 inches annually while snowfall is rarely recorded. Seasonal extremes, however, can range from below freezing to sweltering temperatures.

The area media keep Statesboro residents and visitors up to date on the happenings in our area as well as the world. The Statesboro Herald is published daily. Local cable television offers 55+ channels as well as local news broadcasts several times daily.

In addition, Statesboro has four radio stations featuring different musical and talk show formats for listening pleasure.

Statesboro, located in the northern section of southeast Georgia, is the county seat of Bulloch County, the state’s seventh-largest county occupying 684 square miles. It is located 50 miles northwest of Savannah and 76 miles southwest of Augusta.

Statesboro is serviced by several major roadways which make it easily accessible to other cities. Interstate 16, just 13 miles out of the city limits, links Statesboro to Savannah, 50 miles southeast, and Macon, 120 miles northwest. Statesboro is located on three US Highways: US Highway 80, US Highway 301 and US Highway 25.

ADMINISTRATION DR. BRUCE GRUBE PRESIDENT

Dr. Bruce Grube became Georgia Southern University’s 11th president on July 1, 1999. Under his leadership, Georgia Southern has experienced explosive growth as it rises toward national distinction. Dr. Grube’s vision that “no university ever became great without expecting to be great” served as the foundation to develop a strategic plan focused on providing a premier educational experience centered on the needs of students.

Since Dr. Grube’s arrival, Georgia Southern has become a top choice for growing numbers of HOPE Scholars and high school graduates.

Since 1999, composite SAT scores of incoming freshmen have surpassed state and national averages, rising more than 100 points. Scholastic achievement by the University’s student body is at an all-time high, and the University’s faculty, staff and students continue to bring academic distinction to the institution through ongoing research, scholarship and community service. This level of collaboration resulted in Georgia Southern’s classification as a doctoral-research institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

The University’s academic offerings are not only earning national recognition but so is the institution’s preparation of graduates to either enter the workforce or commit to further study and research. Dr. Grube championed the creation of the College of Information Technology and the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health to demonstrate how the University will play a vital role in transforming the coastal Southeast through new and evolving academic disciplines. The tremendous growth taking place on campus -- a major expansion of Henderson Library, enhanced recreational athletic facilities and soon to be completed new fine arts galleries and Black Box theatre -- demonstrate the positive impact the University has on serving the community, region and the coastal Southeast.

Dr. Grube is an active participant in numerous academic, athletics and community organizations. He is the state representative for Georgia to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and serves on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors. He also is a member of the NCAA Division I-AA/I-AAA Presidential Advisory Group as well as chair of the Southern Conference Council of Presidents.

Before assuming the presidency of Georgia Southern, Dr. Grube served as president of St. Cloud University. Prior to his four-year tenure there, he was provost of the University of Southern Colorado, now Colorado State University-Pueblo. Dr. Grube also spent 15 years at California State University, Pomona, the last five years as provost and academic vice president.

Dr. Grube holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of the honor societies Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Alpha Theta, Phi Beta Delta and Golden Key. As volunteers for area civic and charitable organizations, Dr. Grube and his wife, Kathryn, serve on numerous community and regional boards and committees.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS As he enters his second decade as Georgia Southern Athletics Director, Sam Baker has steered Eagle Athletics from a period of transition and renewal to consistent success, national prominence and unprecedented growth. Under his leadership over the last 11 years, Georgia Southern has soared to national and conference championships, witnessed continued growth in athletic facilities and reaffirmed its commitment to student-athlete welfare and academic performance.

Eagle Athletics have enjoyed extraordinary achievement across the board over the course of Baker’s tenure in Statesboro. Georgia Southern football has reasserted its national profile by winning seven Southern Conference titles, making eight NCAA I-FCS playoff appearances in the last 10 years, and capturing the 1999 and 2000 NCAA I-FCS National Championships. In all, the Eagle and Lady Eagle programs have won 26 SoCon championships and made 20 appearances in NCAA Championships under Baker’s leadership.

Since 2000, facility improvements have been a main focal point of Baker’s efforts. Current facility projects include: upgrades to the softball stadium and aesthetic changes to the concourse at Paulson Stadium.

The department recently completed construction of the Gene Bishop Field House at Paulson Stadium and the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center.

The Bishop Field House gives the Eagles one of the most prominent football facilities at the FCS level. The Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center ranks among the top five practice facilities in all of the NCAA Division I. During the 2004-05 academic year, work was completed on: the renovation of J. I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/Soccer Stadium, significant upgrades in the Iron Works (Georgia Southern’s strength and conditioning center) and Men’s Basketball Locker Rooms (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches’ offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation.

Baker has also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building (completed in 2000) and the Troy Cowart Building (home to Southern Boosters and the GSU Ticket Office).

Additionally, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May 2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. In January 2007, he began a term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee.

Baker, a native of Front Royal, Virginia, joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA).

Baker’s responsibilities with the CFA included securing title sponsorship for and administration of its “Promise of Tomorrow” scholarship program. A four-year agreement with Hitachi awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to aid individuals involved in intercollegiate football with the means to pursue careers in the field of education.

From 1986-90, he was associate athletic director for financial development at Vanderbilt, where he oversaw the National Commodore Club.

In the two years before moving to Nashville, Baker was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Oregon, the institution where he served as director of athletic marketing from January 1983 to May 1984.

Baker entered the field of intercollegiate athletics at the College of William & Mary, where he spent seven years (1976-82) as director of athletic promotions.

Baker holds a 1976 master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University.

He and his wife of 31 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb (28 years old and a doctoral student at Emory), Elizabeth Ann (26, Foster Care Review Board Coordinator for the Governor’s Office in South Carolina) and Josie (19, sophomore at the University of Alabama).

12 The Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which began its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fiftholdest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.

The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision conference. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won the last two Football Championship Subdivision titles. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions.

The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

25th Anniversary of Women’s Championships The Southern Conference will celebrate 25 years of women’s championships in 2007-08.

A year-long celebration of women’s sports will highlight student-athletes, coaches and teams.

Commissioner Ken Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success. The league crowns champions in nine women’s sports including cross country, soccer, volleyball, indoor track & field, basketball, tennis, golf, outdoor track & field and softball.

Membership History The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921.

In 1922, six more schools - Florida, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane and Vanderbilt - joined the fold. A year later, the University of the South joined the ranks. VMI became a member in 1925 and Duke was added 1929. Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions having been affiliated with the league. The league

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE has undergone two major transitions during its history.

The first occurred in December 1932 when the Southeastern Conference was formed from the 23-school Southern Conference. The league’s 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands that were present in the league at the time. In 1936, the Southern Conference invited The Citadel, William & Mary, Davidson, Furman, Richmond and Wake Forest to join the membership.

The second major shift came about in 1953 when Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. This change was brought about due to the desire of many of those schools to schedule a greater number of regular season basketball games against local rivals.

Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford will officially join the league, bringing membership of the conference to 12.

Leadership John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006.

Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference. In nine years with the New Jersey-based league, Iamarino promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions.

The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference.

Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in 1974.

Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball Tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current SoCon logo and elevated the conference’s commitment to marketing and development of corporate partners. He became the president of the Asheville franchise of the National Basketball Development League in 2001.

Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001-2005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C. to historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the conference increased its marketing and promotional efforts.

Championship History The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport.

John Iamarino The Southern Conference Commissioner Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball.

The Southern Conference began sponsoring women’s sports during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988.

Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994.

The Southern Conference currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

Head Coach 4th Year UNC Asheville (1999)

Ashley Hart enters her fourth season piloting the Georgia Southern women’s soccer program, a program which celebrates its 15th season at GSU. Only the second head coach in the program’s history, Hart has a 15-38-3 overall record in three seasons on the sidelines.

In her inaugural season, she inherited a young team that was coming off just its second losing season since the program began in 1993, and had to break in two true freshman goalkeepers and four more first-year players in the field.

The youth movement continued in 2005 with a roster that had just one senior and no juniors, and in 2006, last year’s senior-less squad combined the leadership of the juniors and sophomores with the youth and vitality of an incoming class that saw a lot of playing time.

The 2006 squad produced its most wins within a four-year frame and advanced to the Southern Conference semifinals for the first time since 2002.

In the classroom the Eagles maintained their success, earning an NSCAA Team Academic Award for the fourth straight year in 2004 and eighth time since 1996.

Hired on Dec. 30, 2003, Hart was asked to continue the tradition established by Tom Norton which includes nine seasons of .500 or better and seven top-three finishes in the conference standings.

“I wanted someone that had an understanding of what it takes to succeed at being both a student and an athlete,” said GSU athletics director Sam Baker. “In Ashley, I found that perfect combination that I knew would lead our women’s soccer program to continued success.

Prior to accepting Georgia Southern’s top women’s soccer position, Hart spent four seasons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as an assistant coach. At UAB, she was responsible for overseeing the Blazers’ financial budget, video operations, team travel and recruiting management while aiding

with on-field coaching duties.

During her four years at UAB, the Blazers maintained a 3.20 team grade point average and produced six individual Academic AllAmerica selections.

In 2003, Hart helped lead the Blazers to an overall record of 13-51, which included a Conference USA regular season championship mark of 8-2. That followed a 9-9-1 record, including a 5-5 Conference USA tally, in 2002.

Hart was instrumental in one of the biggest turnarounds in Blazer history that saw UAB record an eight-win improvement from her first season to her second. The Blazers were 3-14-2 during her initial campaign in Birmingham, but improved to 11-9-0, including 7-3 in league play, in 2001.

Before joining the UAB program, Hart served as an assistant coach at Briarwood (Ala.) Christian School where she played a key role in the Lions’ Class 4-A state title in the spring of 2000.

She coached several players which earned NCAA Division I scholarships, including current U.S. Women’s National Team performer Cat (Reddick) Whitehill.

Hart’s coaching career began in 1999 as she spent a season on the Samford (Ala.) University staff, helping guide the Bulldogs to a 9-8-2 record.

As a player, Hart was a four-year starter at the University of North Carolina at Asheville where she was a part of a Big South Conference championship squad in 1995 and a league runnerup finisher in 1996 and 1998. She was a two-time All-Big South choice (1995, 1998) and served as team captain as a senior. A four-time Big South All-Academic Team selection, Hart finished her collegiate career as UNCA’s third all-time leading scorer.

Hart earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from UNCA in 1999, graduating with distinction as a research scholar.

As a prep standout at Vestavia Hills High School, Hart was named Alabama’s High School Player of the Year in 1995. She was also a member of the Alabama Angels Club Team, which garnered eight state titles.

Assistant Coach 1st Year Mars Hill (1997)

Jamey Newsome joins the Georgia Southern women’s soccer coaching staff after serving in several administrative and coaching capacities at the college, club and high school levels.

In addition to coaching responsibilities, Newsome’s duties include recruiting, travel and video analysis.

Newsome recently served two years as the Assistant Director at Darlington Soccer Academy in Rome, Ga. before working a three-year stint at Cannons Soccer Club. While with CSC, Newsome served as the Technical Director for two years, and later as Director of Coaching for one year.

Newsome had his first collegiate coaching experience at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. as the assistant men’s soccer coach, helping lead the Spartans to a 16-4 record and finished the season ranked No. 16 in the nation.

He also coached for two years at Madison High School in Marshall, N.C. Newsome was a part of the Georgia Olympic Development Program staff, the Georgia District Training staff, and currently holds a US Soccer Federation “B” coaching license.

Newsome was a four-year starter at Mars Hill College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1997.

A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Newsome is married to the former Jennifer Schommer, and the two have a pair of cats (Moe and Arjuna) and one dog (Steve).

Graduate Assistant Coach 1st Year Maryland (2005)

Kristen Barnhill joined the Georgia Southern staff in January 2007 after a one-year stint at American University.

In addition to responsibilities as the goalkeeper trainer, Barnhill is responsible for recruiting, equipment and monitoring student-athlete academic progress.

While at American, Barnhill helped guide the Eagles to a 9-7-2 overall record.

Barnhill spent her collegiate playing days at Maryland where she was a four-year letterwinner in the cage, earning the starting position as a junior and senior. During Barnhill’s last two seasons, the Terrapins went 13-8-1 (2002) and 11-8-2 (2003).

Barnhill was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Honor Roll from 2000-2002 and led the conference in saves during her senior year with 94.

A native of Charlottesville, Va., Barnhill attended Charlottesville High School where she was a four-year letterman as goalkeeper and a three-year letterwinner on the basketball court. While there, she was named to the All-Conference team all four years and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior.

SEASON OUTLOOK The 2007 Georgia Southern women’s soccer team is hungry to win.

The 2006 Eagles acquired a more acute taste of victory after garnering its best record since 2002, going 8-11-1 overall and 5-5-0 in Southern Conference play. Additionally, the Eagles – a team without any senior leadership – returned to the SoCon Tournament for the first time since the 2002 campaign, advancing to the semifinals as the No. 7 seed before bowing out to the No. 3 seed Furman.

“I think our success last year has given us a lot of confidence going into the 2007 season,” said fourth-year head coach Ashley Hart. “We now know what it takes to win and what it feels like to win. Once you have a little taste of that you always want more.”

Hart, only the second coach in the program’s 15-year history, pilots a squad that returns a full 11 starters and 16 letterwinners, and welcomes six newcomers to the roster. With only two starters lost from last year’s team, Hart has reason to be pleased about the depth and experience that will take the field for the season opener, August 31, at Samford.

“It is great to finally have a full team,” said Hart. “We have been young for so long.”

With 12 upperclassmen on the roster, experience and leadership is one of the key ingredients to the team’s success.

“Our upperclassmen have played in almost every game of their career,” added Hart. “That experience is going to be invaluable this year. The leadership from them and the early playing time from our sophomores gives us great confidence stepping into games.”

Hostile environments, including a 3-0-1 record when playing games in overtime, last year, is something with which the Eagles are familiar.

“Just about every returnee has played in a “big game” in their career and I think that helps to calm the nerves and to simply play our game, even in hostile environments,” said Hart.

FORWARDS The offensive force is headed by four forwards, including 2006 All-Conference First Team member Ashley Toussaint (Warner Robins, Ga.), and Jenny Boykin (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), who led the Eagles in goals scored with eight and three, respectively.

“I expect both of them to be even more of an impact this year,” said Hart.

“We will be deeper here as well; both Kate Boardman (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Elissa Botts (Grovetown, Ga.) have returned strong from injury and should be a great compliment up top.”

Boardman was tied for second on the team with a pair of goals off of a third-best 11 shots on goal.

“We also have three freshmen, Jenny Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.), Molly Nepote (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Kelly Suter (Plymouth, Minn.) that could see some time up front as well as in the midfield,” added Hart. “They all have the speed and skill to break down defenders.”

MIDFIELDERS Mixed with veterans and newcomers, 11 players will play the midfield role.

“I expect this to be one of our most competitive positions on our team,” said Hart.

“Both Niki Lepper (Carmel, Ind.) and Holli Finneren (Lake Orion, Mich.) are coming off a great spring.”

Lepper started in two of 18 games and dished out one assist. Finneren started in all 20 games and knocked in one goal.

“We are also adding freshman Michelle Berard (Kennesaw, Ga.) who should challenge for playing time with her Susanne Rogers vision and skill on

“On the outside of midfield, we will return both Audrey Brown (Fort Worth, Texas) and Susanne Rogers (Augusta, Ga.),” said Hart. “Their experience and speed will be key to our success this year. Jenny Anderson and Molly Nepote will give us depth on the outside as well.”

Brown started in 19-of-20 games last year, while her classmate Rogers started in all 20 matches, netting one goal and tallying one assist.

DEFENDERS On defense, the Eagles return a strong group of experienced players, helping to produce five shutouts.

“Our defense was the key to many of our wins last year. I’m excited to return all four starters, Michelle Carlson (Melbourne, Fla.), Mallory Springfield (Marietta, Ga.), Laura Smith (Buford, Ga.) and Heather Smith (Kingwood, Texas). I think with another year of experience this could be our strongest group. I’m also excited about the return of Colleen Deignan (Coral Springs, Fla.). She has come back strong from injury and will be a key player in our back line. Abby Wheeler could also see time back here as well.”

Carlson started in all 20 matches and even got a taste of offense, dishing out a pair of assists.

Springfield played a dual role as well, starting in all 19 contests and tallying one goal and one assist.

Laura Smith notched a goal and started in all 20 games played. She played a key role in the Eagles’ tournament run and was later named to the 2006 All-SoCon tournament team.

GOALKEEPERS Hart is excited about the depth and experience of two veteran goalkeepers directing the defense. Returning is 2006 SoCon All-Tournament team member Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.), who ranks first and second, respectively, in the GSU annals in shots faced (293) and saves (103) in one season as a freshman. She helped produce three shutouts on the season.

Senior Laura-Ashley Harris (Jonesboro, Ga.), who was last year named Georgia Southern Student-Athlete of the Year, will also vie for the keeper position. She recorded one shutout last year and currently ranks fourth in shots faced (447) and saves (177) during her career.

“It is great to have two strong keepers. Santos returns after a great freshman season and I expect to be even better with a year of experience behind her,” said Hart. “Harris is an invaluable leader and is extremely fit and will push for playing time. Having a competitive fight for the starting spot will push both keepers to be their best.”

“I’m really excited about this team,” said Hart. “Regardless of our late success last year, I think we are still underestimated at times. We have a great group of workers that have a taste of winning. I think that can be a deadly combination.”

38 SOCCER LEGEND VISITS GSU Steve Heighway of Liverpool Academy shares wisdom with studentathletes, coaches STATESBORO, Ga. – Liverpool Football Club’s legendary Steve Heighway visited the Georgia Southern campus, Wednesday (Mar. 29, 2007), sharing his experiences with students, coaches and athletes.

Heighway spent all day Wednesday talking to the Georgia Southern and Statesboro community including coaching education and sports psychology students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, both the GSU men’s and women’s soccer teams, and high school students and coaches from the Statesboro area.

“I think he’s probably one of the best coaches in England, if not in the whole world,” said head GSU women’s soccer coach Ashley Hart.

“It’s an honor that somebody of his credentials would spend time at Georgia Southern.

It was good for our players to see a coach of that level and to be able to spend time with him and absorb some of his knowledge. It was valuable for us to see his emphasis on technique.”

Before taking on coaching and administrative responsibilities as Director of the Liverpool Academy – an operation that caters to young players seeking to play soccer professionally, the Dublin, Ireland native was signed by Liverpool FC in 1970 as an amateur player.

While at Liverpool, he competed in 473 first-team games scoring 76 first-team goals. He helped the club garner five First Division Championships (‘73, ‘76, ‘77, ‘79, ‘80). He also appeared in the FA Cup (’74), the European Cup (’77, ‘78), the UEFA Cup (‘73, ’76), the Charity Shield (‘74, ‘76), and the European Super Cup (’77). He made 34 appearances with the Republic of Ireland national team (1971-82), and in 1981 played one year with the Minnesota Kicks.

During his visit to Georgia Southern, Heighway spent an hour with both GSU men’s and women’s teams, focusing on things like technique, body positioning, dribbling and passing.

“I think it was a good confidence-building session for our players to see something that is difficult for them explained in a simpler way,” added Hart, “He did a good job explaining things in a manner that they were able to comprehend and succeed.”

After spending time with both Eagles’ teams, Heighway and visitors headed to the Bishop Fieldhouse where he led a tactical chalkboard session discussing the trends of the game throughout history.

After dinner, Heighway’s visit ended at Paulson Stadium with a coaching session spent with local

NEWS & NOTES high school athletes and coaches.

“It was good that a lot of coaches in the area had a chance to come and see him coach and train and also see how he runs a training session,” said Hart. “So I think it was a very valuable coaching tool. Hopefully a lot of coaches in the area benefited from that as well.”

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Beginning its 15th year of exsistence, the GSU women’s soccer program has excelled both on the field and in the classroom since the program’s inception in 1993.

The Eagles have gained the reputation as having one of the top academic athletic teams in the country. Placing a student-athlete on an Academic All-America team has become a regular occurrence, and five GSU Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Year awards have gone to Eagle soccer players.

The Eagles were one of only five schools in the nation to receive four consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Awards, an award received earning a team grade-point-average of 3.0, between 1996-99. The Eagles have also earned the award each year from 2001-2004, including the 2004 campaign with a 3.25 GPA, the highest in program history. The 1998-99 squad captured the GSU President’s Award, signifying the top academic performance among the school’s female athletic teams.

Two Eagles have earned Academic All-America honors. Rachel Tolliver was the first to accomplish the feat, being named to the 1995 ISAA first team. Following the 1996 season, she earned spots on the NSCAA second team and the GTE/CoSIDA At-Large third team. In both years, Tolliver was a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and was crowned as GSU’s 1995 Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Throughout her career, Tolliver maintained a 3.96 GPA and graduated with a degree in Computer Information Systems.

Lindsey Grossman duplicated Tolliver’s success in 1999. She was named to the NSCAA first team and the GTE/CoSIDA all-district III at-large team. Grossman was also the recipient of the Southern Conference’s Dorothy Hicks scholarship to aid in the pursuit of graduate studies and the GSU Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award.

Grossman was also part of the 1999 senior class in which all six seniors graduated with a GPA of 3.0 or above, the first such occurence in the history of the GSU athletic program.

Most recently, goalkeeper Laura-Ashley Harris was named the Georgia Southern Scholar-Athlete of the Year (2006), in addition to being named a recipient of the Coleman Lew Leadership Award and the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar Award in the same year.

Other women’s soccer players to earn the Georgia Southern Student-Athlete-of-the-Year Award include Sandy Bonfim, a 1997 graduate who captured the honor her senior season, and Robin Thirsk, who finished her career as the second-leading scorer in school history. Bonfim and Grossman were NCAA Woman-of-the-Year nominees in 1997 and 1999, respectively.

Overall, eight players have earned a total of 12 NSCAA Academic All-Region honors while studying at Georgia Southern.

Earning a degree and participating in athletics at the college level are opportunities of a lifetime offered at Georgia Southern. The program’s success in both areas speaks for itself.
