Crystal Poskey enters her fifth year as assistant coach with the Eagles, having joined the program in 2008 along with Head Coach Chad Callihan. Poskey came to GSU after a two-year head coaching stint at Radford University. She took over a Radford program that had not won a Big South Conference match since 2003 and had not won more than eight matches in the previous four years and immediately made a difference. Radford went 9-19 in her first season, the most wins since 2001, and she led the Highlanders to four Big South wins. Under Poskey’s direction, Radford improved dramatically in every offensive statistical category, including kills and service aces. RU made a jump of 382 total kills from the previous year and 34 aces from 2005 to 2006. Radford had four players in 2006 that recorded 200 or more kills. Perhaps her greatest influence came in the improvement at the setter position. A former setter at Francis Marion, Poskey’s guidance helped RU setter Josie Hanners increase her output by nearly 400 assists from 2005 to 2006. Hanners finished the season with 1190 assists, her first season with more than 800 helpers. Poskey has continued to make developing setters her trademark at Georgia Southern. Current senior Kate Van Dyke enters the 2012 season 181 assists shy of the school career record and is a three-time first-team All-Southern Conference selection. She was named the 2010 SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player after leading the Eagles to the title. Poskey brought a wealth of knowledge and experience into the Radford program after serving as an assistant coach at Appalachian State, where she also worked with Callihan. Poskey was the Mountaineers’ recruiting coordinator and specialized in helping improve ASU’s setters. Under her tutelage, Amber Mangrum set school records with 4,408 career assists and 1,544 assists in a season. Callihan and Poskey led the Mountaineers to the 2003 Southern Conference championship, the school’s first since 1995. A four-year standout at Francis Marion for Jerry Pruitt, Poskey was an all-conference selection in each of her four years. She enjoyed her most prolific season in 1998, earning Peach Belt Player of the Year and Tournament MVP honors. She also collected NCAA South Region and AVCA All-Region accolades while leading her squad to its second-straight Peach Belt Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Poskey played a key role in the Patriots’ two regular-season (1996 and 1998) and tournament (1997 and 1998) Peach Belt titles and an AVCA top-25 national ranking in 1998. After earning her undergraduate degree in biology with a minor in coaching from Francis Marion in 2001, Poskey took a job as the head junior varsity coach at Clarkston High School in her hometown of Clarkston, Wash. Two years later, she accepted a position as head volleyball coach at South Florence High School in Florence, S.C., where she spent two years before moving on to Appalachian State.

Scott Smith enters his first year as an assistant coach and his third season overall on the Georgia Southern volleyball staff. His primary responsibilities are assisting with daily practices, scouting and video editing. Smith served as a graduate assistant coach at Georgia Southern the last two seasons while earning his master’s degree in kinesiology - exercise science. The native of Herndon, Va., came to Georgia Southern after serving as the freshman volleyball head coach at Herndon High School and assistant for the varsity team from 2008-09. Smith spent three seasons as a Select Division coach for the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association (2007-10). He also served as the Camp Director for the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association in the summer of 2012. A 2007 graduate of Appalachian State with a bachelor’s degree in recreation management, Smith worked with the volleyball team as a student assistant in 2006 and 2007. In his first season, Smith worked with current Eagle Head Coach Chad Callihan, assisting with daily practices. While at ASU, he was the men’s club volleyball captain and president all four years and earned all-conference accolades at outside hitter three times. While attending Herndon High School, Smith was a four-year varsity wrestling lettermen and district champion. Unable to compete in volleyball in high school because there was no boys’ prep volleyball in Northern Virginia, Smith managed the varsity girls team for three years. He played Junior Olympic volleyball for one season with Metro Virginia 18’s. Smith still participates in highly-competitive grass and sand doubles volleyball tournaments along the East coast and plays adult USAV with a team in the Chesapeake Region.

Hanner Fieldhouse Home to Georgia Southern basketball and volleyball, Hanner Fieldhouse is one of the best venues for collegiate athletics in the Southern Conference. Completed in 1969, the facility serves as the center of Georgia Southern’s intercollegiate athletics program and is named for the late W.S. “Shep” Hanner, the school’s faculty athletic chairman from 1935-59. Hanner also served at various times as tennis coach, assistant football coach, professor and chairman of the Division of Exercise Sciences. The Fieldhouse, part of the larger Hanner Complex, houses the Health, Physical Education and Professional Studies Departments as well as most of the Eagles coaches’ offices and several team locker rooms. In addition to the main basketball arena, the complex contains a smaller gymnasium, a weight room, fitness rooms, locker rooms and athletic training facilities. During the summer of 1995, the University completed a $500,000 renovation to Hanner Fieldhouse. Wooden bleachers at floor level were replaced with chairback seats and new floor graphics were painted. The 2003 squad battled through three five-set matches, a first for an eventual SoCon champ. After rallying from a 2-1 deficit in the opener against Western Carolina, the Eagles battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the semifinal round against Appalachian State and trailed 2-1 in the finals against College of Charleston.

Strength and Conditioning

Away from the playing fields, the cameras and the game day excitement is Iron Works, the heart of GSUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strength and conditioning for all 15 intercollegiate teams. Here, athletes enhance their physical capabilities through the training leadership of certified coaches, and the end results are usually displayed in the win column. A renovation to Iron Works included the addition of offices and a new entrance and interior. Nearly $50,000 worth of new weight equipment including multi-squat racks, two Olympic platforms complete with bumpers plates and bars, free weights, hammer machines and body weight scale were added. Georgia Southern Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Tom Melton, who has the dual title of assistant athletics director/athletic performance, provides a direct strength training leadership role to the Eagle football program while coordinating and supervising off-season and in-season applications for the other 14 GSU teams. Thanks to donations received from former Georgia Southern football athletes, Iron Works is also home to two Vertimax Jump Trainers.

Georgia Southern Sports Medicine provides optimal care for student-athletes as they prepare for practice and competition. Full-time and graduate assistant athletic trainers work with all Eagle teams during their competition seasons and off-season workouts to prevent and rehabilitate injuries. The Athletic Training room underwent an impressive re-modeling phase within its Hanner Fieldhouse location and features state-of-the-art equipment for the treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. The facility incorporates the latest advances and resources in sports medicine as staff constantly research technology to benefit the student-athlete. A complete hydra-therapy area and a large collection of student-athlete treatment stations are housed in the training area. A separate rehabilitation room provides specialized care for sessions specific to the treatment of injuries and for post-surgery recovery. Partnering with one of the top athletics training programs in the nation at Georgia Southern, student-athletes receive excellent care and attention both on the field and off.

The former mid-century residence hall was completely refurbished to provide individual and group study areas, a computer lab, meeting rooms for tutorial work, a lecture room, conference room and offices for support staff.

DR. BROOKS A. KEEL Augusta State ’78

12th PRESIDENT GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY Brooks A. Keel, Ph.D. began his tenure as the 12th President of Georgia Southern University on January 4, 2010. The Augusta, Ga. native, a selfdescribed product of the education system of Georgia, returns to his home state to lead Georgia Southern University with significant experience in the top ranks of academia, research, and economic development. Since joining Georgia Southern, Keel has been focused on expanding undergraduate and graduate learning opportunities whether through research, creative or community-based educational experiences. In addition, he has been working to increase Georgia Southern’s research and economic development opportunities. The University is already beginning to attract interest through its Renewable Energy Lab and Public Health Core Research Lab. Prior to his arrival at Georgia Southern, Keel served as the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, and professor of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge from 2006-10. As vice chancellor, Keel led LSU’s research and economic initiatives and activities, including expanding research funding opportunities for faculty and students, encouraging entrepreneurial activity and broadening the University’s technology transfer operations and partnerships with statewide business organizations in support of long-term economic development for Louisiana. In addition, he coordinated the work of more than 1,300 faculty involved in approximately 2,000 sponsored research projects and oversaw the areas of LSU’s budget that dealt with $156 million in externally-funded grants and programs. Prior to his appointment at Louisiana State University, Keel was a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Associate Vice President for Research at Florida State University, Tallahassee, from 2002-2006. His professional career began in 1985 at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, where he served in a variety of positions including the Daniel K. Roberts Distinguished Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1995-2001), President of the Women’s Research Institute (1993-2001) and Director of Reproductive Medicine Laboratories (1994-2002). Keel earned his Ph.D. in reproductive endocrinology from the Medical College of Georgia in 1982 and a Bachelor

of Science in biology and chemistry from Augusta College (now Augusta State University) in 1978. He has completed postdoctoral work at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, Vermillion. He is a member of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, among others. Keel has served on numerous boards related to his discipline, including the American Board of Bioanalysis, the American Association of Bioanalysts Board of Registry, the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Southeastern Universities Research Association and the Executive Committee of the Council on Research Policy and Graduate Education of APLU. Keel is married to Dr. Tammie Schalue, an accomplished scientist and scholar. Dr. Schalue currently serves as the director of laboratories at the Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and the associate administrator for the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). Both are certified SCUBA diving instructors.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Building a strong future for the Georgia Southern sports programs in his 17 years as Director of Athletics, Sam Baker has positioned the Eagles for success with new or renovated facilities, a foundation of financial stability and decisions to ensure the best for the student-athlete. An integral component of this ideology is the commitment to “Rings and Diplomas,” as the Athletics Department provides the opportunity for every Georgia Southern student-athlete to win a championship ring and earn a diploma. Baker announced on July 27th that he would be stepping aside from his duties as Athletics Director. He will serve in the interim until a new director is named. The emphasis on the “student” in student-athlete is one trademark of the Georgia Southern athletics program as Baker promotes the initiative and continued support for excellence in the classroom. Continuing to add to the lengthy list of accomplishments for the program, two Southern Conference championships were added last year in football and softball which upped Georgia Southern’s total to 32. Those championships gave the Eagles 29 appearances in postseason play. The most acclaimed is the Eagle Football program, accounting for nine SoCon titles, 10 NCAA playoff appearances (Division I FCS) and back-to-back NCAA FCS titles in 1999 and 2000, two of the nation’s-best six FCS national championships, during the Baker tenure. A primary focus of Baker’s efforts has been facility improvements for fans and student-athletes. Planning and fundraising has begun for a new operations building for the Eagle Football program to be located at Paulson Stadium. The Gene Bishop Field House opened in the fall 2006, anchored the west end of the stadium with aesthetic changes to the concourses at Paulson Stadium made in 2007 and 2008. Softball stadium enchancements were completed in 2008 with the construction of stadium seating, team locker rooms and public rest rooms. In the same time period, the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center was completed, providing Eagle Golf with one of the top all-around practice facilities the nation. Building and renovations were completed for several projects including the renovation of J.I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/Soccer Stadium, renovation and expansion of Iron Works (Georgia Southern’s athletic performance center) and Men’s Basketball Locker Room (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches’ offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation and upgrades. Baker also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building, the Herring Pavilion, football practice field renovation and the Troy Cowart Building (home to the Athletic Foundation and Athletics Ticket Office). As a leader in his profession, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May

2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. As Georgia Southern Athletics Director, he served as a member of the NCAA Special Events, Olympic Liaison and Division I Football Issues Committees. In June 2009, he was honored with recognition as the NACDA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision’s Southeast Region. Baker, a native of Front Royal, Va., joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA). Baker’s responsibilities with the CFA included securing title sponsorship for and administration of its “Promise of Tomorrow” scholarship program. A four-year agreement with Hitachi awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to aid individuals involved in intercollegiate football with the means to pursue careers in the field of education. From 1986-90, he was associate athletic director for financial development at Vanderbilt, where he oversaw the National Commodore Club. In the two years before moving to Nashville, Baker was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Oregon, the institution where he served as director of athletic marketing from January 1983 to May 1984. Baker entered the field of intercollegiate athletics at the College of William & Mary, where he spent seven years (1976-82) as director of athletic promotions. Baker holds a 1976 master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University. He and his wife of 36 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb, Elizabeth Ann, and Josie.
